Thank you for not only reporting this, but helping the locals out. Too many content creators are just out to build their channels rather than give back to those they are basing their content on.
I’ve been in this situation in Cornwall before a couple of times. The majority(80-90%) of the homeless I met were from up country or just out from HMP Exeter. They see Cornwall as a paradise away from the inner cities of the UK. A large majority of the homeless are drug/alcohol dependent. There is help, like St Petrocs, but unfortunately where there is too much help you’re guaranteeing migrating the homeless from elsewhere to that area. Supported accommodation needs to be regulated as in the past I have had Petrocs help me by accommodating me in one of their hostels, but as I wasn’t dependent on substances, I found a job and a better living situation away from all of that drama. Unfortunately I neglected to inform Cornwall Council and so Petrocs told them I was there for a month longer than I was and I was forced to pay £1500 back to Cornwall Council (housing benefit). You get bare minimum support and a tiny room in a shared house with 5-10 others and each one brings in £350-£400 per week to the “charity”. The day centers help you with getting things but once they get you in their accommodation you’re part of their fleecing system. It’s nice to shine a light on the issues that DO exist in Cornwall but this is not 100% honest. Not your fault.
Great video thanks Joe, living in Cornwall this certainly shows the truth and the compassion you give to everyone here is much appreciate. Been delving into your channel and all your videos are doing good for this world. Also mad to see my mum make an appearance halfway through! Did not expect that! She is a true legend who has done loads for children in Liskeard
It's so heartbreaking to see Cornwall like this! My grandfather came from Cornwall. As a child I remember Cornwall being a beautiful, busy place with no homeless. This is a world wide issue! Over here, we have the exact same thing happening! We have tradesman living out of cars in places like Queenstown, no housing for those who do work, and no housing for those who are struggling. Every single city here, exact same. Rates skyrocketed, people losing their homes, tenants being homeless because landlords either want a higher rent /or selling up. The amount of second homes, international investment (buying our houses) has left a huge shortage for the average kiwi. The lack of compassion, empathy, for those who are seriously struggling its just ghastly! Addiction is an illness. Mental health hospitals some were closed down years a go, people just left to fend for themselves, the mental health system is so broken! Waiting lists are 1 year plus, even charity groups like rape crisis waiting lists at least 1 year. We spent 3 years struggling to keep our son alive. His mental health and autism were extremely bad. He was even released onto the streets of Wellington, as a minor! Even after we told them we were 2 hours drive away to get him, they let him out, saying nothing they could do for him. We searched the streets, day and night many a time for him. If it wasn't for God we are sure he would never of survived. It doesn't take much to help someone. Some sponsor children through organizations like World Vision, yet there own country has just as serious need! We need more people like you!! Keeping it real! There are so many ignorant, naive to what is happening around them. Thanks Joe you are a blessing to those whom need a voice 😊
Thank you for your comment and for watching, I'm really sorry to hear your plight and I hope something changes. This looks to be a worldwide issue that is affecting so many unfortunately, I just hope it shines a light on the situation. Thanks again for watching and taking the time to comment 🙏👍
Hi Joe, I stumbled upon your video about Bristol van city yesterday. Beautiful Bristol is my home town and I found it heartbreaking. I'm now 74 and my husband and I live in Edinburgh. There is a huge homeless problem here. The council polishes up the city every night for the tourists but they cannot disguise that people are living in tents on Princes St. It did my heart good to see the kindness you showed to those guys by buying them food and water. There are several homeless people living where we live. I help them as much as I can with blankets and hot water bottles in the winter. I am just loving your videos. God Bless.
Excellent videos you do Joe very good journalisum its also very sad, I saw one of your videos around waterlooville, I used to go shopping there when i was younger, looks alot different nowadays, very sad indeed, keep up the great work Joe
Joe just stumbled on your channel and this was very insightful. Just come back from a trip in Cornwall and saw stickers around St Ives saying 'f@ck your second home'. Noticed the house prices but had no idea it was this bad. Shame really
Hi mate 👋 thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment. Yes the housing problem is very bad especially those coastal resorts unfortunately. Thanks for watching
The people need a voice in Cornwall. Joe, you are that voice. The MP's need to wake up to this problem. There is no excuse for this. Thank you for showing what is going on. Cities in America are going through that same experience. All the best to you and your family ,👍👍👍👍 mate Jim and Harriet, Richmond, Va.
Hey Jim & Harriet 👋 I just hope this sheds light on the situation and helps in some way. Thanks for the kind words and support 🙏 it really does mean a lot. See you on the next one 👊
Ban Airbnb for a start. It's not just the UK where its making life impossible for locals - I've been here in Malta for over a decade, working, paying taxes, but am finally being forced to leave because rental prices have rocketed. All because landlords would rather rent for a few months of the year via Airbnb than long lets to residents. And, I'm not even on a 'low' income. I despair for families - but politicians the world over need to get in touch with reality or get the hell out.
Same situation here in Dublin, so many properties now available on Airbnb compared to the rental market. You hear some politician mention it from time to time but there hadn't been any actions taking so far.

Hey Joe, as a former resident of Birmingham and partly revisiting it sometimes. The slum areas of the city are mostly areas like Balsall Heath, Saltley, Soho & Winson Green, Handsworth, Rotton Park, Erdington and Acocks Green. They are the biggest dives in Birmingham.
I'm a former Birmingham resident it's not all slum Sutton Coldfield, Great Barr, Harborne, Kings Heath and Edgbaston are fine.Little Aston and Barnt Green are exclusive . You forgot Sparkbrook, Sparkhill, Lozells and the cherry on the top New town🤮
I'd be surprised if you ever lived or even visited Birmingham. No one calls Rotten park an area😅 You need to fact check your Google search. I happen to live in one of the real areas you mentioned and my house valuation has been and still is rocketing since I brought it. Shame you moved away from Birmingham should have stayed and cashed in💰, if you where ever here in the first place.
I have enjoyed your visit to Cornwall. I would never believe it in 21st century. I am 77 and Bude used to be our summer holidays back in the 50ties 60ties. 😊

Joe, well done for highlighting how bad things are getting. I have been a living carer for 30 years and once worked with more poor to middle-class people. what I have seen over the last few years, is a big change in caring. It's more the ungrateful rich classes. To add more icing on the cake, I have also found a great number of carers themselves are only two paychecks from living on the streets like myself. The NHS is falling apart as the jobs and homes are becoming fewer for the poorist native people in this country. I feel the Culture and civil wars is rising!
@@JoefishJ I enjoy watching your videos. You’re just you and you show it raw. Loved the Bristol episodes. I had no idea things were so bad. Speaking of which I’m in a situation where I could end up on the streets or in my car at least. Hard times, good people like you are hard to find. Top man.
I grew up in Cornwall...lived in a small hamlet - stunning ..then moved to Liskeard and also lived in St Austell. It's shocking to see how awful things have become for people- Poverty, homelessness , lack of basic services ....horrific !
I spent several, week long, beautiful trips to River side caravan park, just outside St Austell. I hope it hasn't succumbed to the state of this nation.
Why are people rewarded for having a second home that is left empty for 80% of the year? By the way I live and work here in Cornwall in hospitality industry and yes I love to reach minimum wage in my pay packet!
Like you've said there are many in the same situation with thousands of homes empty for 80-90% of the time, most are humble 2/3 bed houses that families would live in. Who knows the solution thanks for watching
So move where the jobs pay better .Its not the optimum choice but , sometimes, you just have to help yourself.! We struggled a lot, then moved 3 hours away from home. We got better jobs, Much higher salaries, and could save money, at last, for a deposit to buy our house. Now, a few years later, we fully own our house and the land it's on!!, Do we regret what was a tough choice? Of course not ....Don't see why you should do that? Well stay in poverty then. Your choice.
@@jacqueline8559 yep that’s what the younger generation do I myself move to Cornwall bought a house, but sadly after 22 years my ex cheated on me a divorced me, but that led to the loss of my house and business (I had a studio in the outbuildings) now I’m 61 the option of moving away is more limited personally as I have secured tenancy (very hard to get as man). But taking your idea for people to move to better areas for better jobs yes the youth here can move away which will leave low paid jobs open for either migrants to fill or a lot smaller businesses will close and there will be no one to replace them and serve the tourists. I do intend to change my work for better paid job once I’ve recovered from a full hip replacement which I just had a few days ago. If you happen to read any articles about Cornwall pricing themselves out of the tourist season this year, sat here in Cornwall we have very much noticed that with second home owners and foreign property investors getting greedy and over charging which has a knock on effect to the small independent businesses which are the places that can’t put up their prices and have higher overheads. I’m all for high council taxes for second homes and investment properties, totally sick of seeing hard working people living in sheds and vans while each day going to work in tourists industry.
The rents across the UK are absolutely ludicrous to buy you need a humongous deposit its ridiculous our government needs to sort this situation asap and put a cap on rents bloody ridiculous we are all entitled to live somewhere at a reasonable price 😡bless you for talking and showing some compassion to these lost homeless folk any one of us can end up like this it's a disgrace ❤😢

They can't cap ALL the rents. What about the Landlords, who have only one property to finance their pensions? They still have to pay the mortgage on their rented property. If their mortgage goes up, the rents must as well. It's not all about the tenants!!!
I was homeless for a short period and ended up in Newquay about 10 years ago. Clive was the first person I spoke to on my arrival, he gave the run down on where to go to get what. Good man.
Big time, for obvious reasons I didn't want to mention any particular 'rental' website. Thanks for watching please share the video with any like minded people 🙏👍
I'm not exactly happy with the direction of the UK.. I moved into Portugal.. it's a better way of life.. Still has poverty and corruption but the portuguese people seem to handle it better..they live close to the land and seem to be happy with less.. Uk is a fat cat playground with a greedy aspiring middle class..who all prey on the poor...

Nothing to do with immigration, homelessness was here long before the immigrants, it's Dodgy Dave,s and Osborne fault with unnecessary austerity. They killed thousands of people.
There are plenty of brownfield sites that could be turned into housing to support an expanding population. IMO the problem is a lack of planning and investment, not immigration. These problems didn't start with immigration; they started with Thatcher forcing the councils to sell off their housing stock and actually banning them from replacing it.
@@doublehappiness9889 investment from where?!!! the country is bankrupt and living on borrowed money yet we finance all these refugees and hotels and then they get prioritised for the social housing in front of our people who either have to wait 20+ years or rent in the private sector or buy. If net migration was zero we certainly wouldn't have these problems but that isn't what you lefties want to hear
16:58 In Devon we have so many issues with fly tipping, mostly because the council have gone silly on regaulations at the recycling centres. Sophisticated tippers dump on private land so they council wont touch it and up to the land owner (or public ((us)) ) to remove. More conscientious tippers will dump next to bins on highways/laybys so at least it gets picked up at some point but its absolutely atrocious and a blight on the land.
It’s good you’re showing this it’s a shame the people at the top don’t give a toss. They aren’t human at all. You would not see someone from parliament buying a homeless person a pasty. Unless of course they wanted something in return. I’ve been homeless it’s horrible I’m lucky to be alive when you’re homeless your soul diminishes and you often feel like dying. My message to homeless people is keep Faith ❤
You are such a kind man not to pass judgement on people who have become homeless - there is always a story to tell on each and everyone of them. As that man said, most of us are all 3/4 paychecks away from becoming homeless ourselves. We like to think our future paths are predictable, but in our times it is not. I like it when you offer them coffee/tea, a sandwich, but not money or drink - they drink to lessen their despair, I'm sure. Keep up the good work - your sensitivity is amazing!

@@galegrazutis964your deluded mate! Ok so your a server or shop attendant in Newquay on 20k a year... After tax that's around £1400 - rent in Newquay for a 1bed is around £800 - £900. Then bills and food say £300 a month, phone bill and other outgoings another £100 - £200. That's the money gone just on surviving... Your a closed minded deluded fool who thinks it's all down to getting a better job... Shows how simple your trail of thought is.
Problem is when they do they are now allowed to charge 90% of local market rent and are unaffordable to most in work so they would only house those on full benefits as they are as expensive as private renting. They need to bring back social rents and scrap "affordable" 90% rents that working people can't afford. The council where I am build new council homes or convert offices but the prices are too high. Absolutely a joke.
Great video thanks! But I would love to know how many of these people are actually from Cornwall?? Unfortunately I think Cornwall inherits a lot of other areas problems. Like all of the people you interviewed and bought pasties for, all with Manchester accents. So Cornwall Council tax payers have to not only look after their own, but also all of these out of County blow ins.
@colindoherty1891 Hi Colin, no that's not what I'm saying. My point is Cornwall is one of the poorest areas in Northern Europe and is experiencing a housing crisis exasperated by second homes. The Cornish taxpayer is then expected to socially house, mid-30 somethings with addictions/mental health problems from other areas on top of existing problems within local communities. If people are unable to demonstrate their links to Cornwall, they should be supplied a one-way ticket back to where they've come from.
I'm cornish and yes, they hugely outnumber the cornish street dwellers. They're rude and don't care how sh!t they make the place look because it isn't their home town. I'm ex homeless (local), we want to hide ourselves and want to move on with life, these guys are career bums who burned all their bridges til they end up here at the end of the line and fk up the plight of the truly needy in the county. Stop the sale of property that is only used for less than 6 months of the year by the Owner. 2nd Home owners contribute next to nothing for Local Economies. Alternatively, Council Tax them extremely, and spend that money on Social Housing.

People unwittingly think it will never happen to me, wake up it can, right when you least expect it, we need to help each other because the government will not.
I've been homeless for a few months before and the worst part is boredom, if you have a home you can jump on a computer and play a game, have a few mates over for a bbq, or just turn on the telly or whatever. When you have no access to power or security, it's hard to while away the minutes and the easy option is just to get drunk or high. It becomes a vicious circle, I remember talking to someone who had never taken drugs before becoming homeless, but had purely out of boredom.
Wow that's insane! However wages are higher in Australia in comparison. So it's probably around the same 12-15 times the annual wage as it is in Cornwall. Scary
What percentage of the population of Cornwall do immigrants make up? Are Asylum seekers or immigrants buying up £360,000 second homes in Cornwall? Which of the individuals shown could do any of the vacant, production, factory, picking & packing, care worker, and farm labouring jobs etc that immigrants predominantly come and do? Is it easier to rather than accept personal responsibility for your poverty, to blame broke Asylum seekers and immigrants? and, does having millionaire politicians encouraging you to blame them help?

Great video as always. It shows the rough reality people is genuinely facing, and not the fake happy place that some think Cornwall is, just for being beautiful..! I'm wondering what Labour, the winning party, is going to do about all this social/economic disaster which has engulfed not just Cornwall but the whole rest of UK? Hopefully it will get better..🤞 🙋👍
@@JoefishJ So am I, Joe! I really don't believe it's going to be easy at all. Labour wasn't my own choice, but at least it will be some sort of brighter change along the way... Grew up in Aggie and returned recently and it’s lost much of its charm and spirit. You can feel this disparity between struggling locals and the second home lot, most of which are probably empty.
We also have a second home problem in Shetland. It ia not so obvious here, but house prices are comparatively low here, so people sell a house an home in Britain, then buy a house here at an inflated price for the area and live off the remainder. Prices are then too high for first time buyer locals. Our rural areas are turning into old peoples villages😢
What's the point of saving to buy a house in Cornwall that is miles from the sea and then have to pay £15 to park your car for the day to visit a cold beach. I used to live in Cornwall and all the money doesn't go to the people working there, it goes to old money property landlords including restaurants/pubs. There is a solution coming though, a few bad summers, recession and high prices will stop a lot of tourism. Less tourists = bad business for airbnb's ect. Why would you pay £2000 on a holiday to Cornwall for a week, when you can go to Spain for £400 or Mauritius for £1600 all inclusive? No horrible traffic doing 20 in a 60, no private parking tickets (invoices), £50 for Fish and Chips out there.
Great video! In terms of what will fix this, the best answers threaten the wealth and status of the people that we put in charge to answer this question. An answer is to use monitory policy to incentivise first time buyers and de-incentivise second homeowners and landlords and build a shit ton more of council housing. None of this serves the interests of people in power and it’s only a minority of them that care about other people as much as they care about themselves ie support policies to fix this
It’s a bad situation people being priced out of their local areas etc. But I can’t help to think that the homeless people sometimes choose that path in life, well some of them. They would never be doctors or police officers, but does the drug and alcohol problems stem from homelessness or cause it? It’s not good, but what’s the answer, homeless village?

God Bless.
Joe please never stop your fantastic work. A true picture of the social economic issues in the towns and cities of the UK.
Really appreciate the kind words and support thank you 🙏👍

Joe just stumbled on your channel and this was very insightful. Just come back from a trip in Cornwall and saw stickers around St Ives saying 'f@ck your second home'. Noticed the house prices but had no idea it was this bad. Shame really

Another excellent video Joe thank you

The people need a voice in Cornwall. Joe, you are that voice. The MP's need to wake up to this problem. There is no excuse for this. Thank you for showing what is going on. Cities in America are going through that same experience. All the best to you and your family ,👍👍👍👍 mate Jim and Harriet, Richmond, Va.

Keep on and keep safe mate, Thankyou for highlighting the UKs problem, Tone from Mansfield.
Hey Tone 👋 appreciate the support and well wishes my mate! Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment 🙏👊

Thanks for the recommendations I'll be heading up to Bham very soon 👍🙏
Great video Joe 👍🤗🌿

Joe, well done for highlighting how bad things are getting. I have been a living carer for 30 years and once worked with more poor to middle-class people. what I have seen over the last few years, is a big change in caring. It's more the ungrateful rich classes. To add more icing on the cake, I have also found a great number of carers themselves are only two paychecks from living on the streets like myself. The NHS is falling apart as the jobs and homes are becoming fewer for the poorist native people in this country. I feel the Culture and civil wars is rising!
As a 'carer,' it's so unprofessional to talk about your patients in this way! Maybe you need to consider a change of job 🧐🤔
You’re a good man. Keep up with your morals and ethics mate.
Appreciate that mate thank you 🙏
@@JoefishJ I enjoy watching your videos. You’re just you and you show it raw.

Hard times, good people like you are hard to find.
Top man.
I grew up in Cornwall...lived in a small hamlet - stunning ..then moved to Liskeard and also lived in St Austell. It's shocking to see how awful things have
become for people- Poverty, homelessness , lack of basic services ....horrific !

Liked, seems like you genuinely care about the situation and the people you speak to, rather than milking them for content.

With over 800,000 coming to the country every year
This is the impact of mass uncapped immigration
Nothing to do with immigration, homelessness was here long before the immigrants, it's Dodgy Dave,s and Osborne fault with unnecessary austerity. They killed thousands of people.
There are plenty of brownfield sites that could be turned into housing to support an expanding population. IMO the problem is a lack of planning and investment, not immigration. These problems didn't start with immigration; they started with Thatcher forcing the councils to sell off their housing stock and actually banning them from replacing it.
@@doublehappiness9889 at last someone talking sense, thank you.
@@doublehappiness9889 investment from where?!!! the country is bankrupt and living on borrowed money yet we finance all these refugees and hotels and then they get prioritised for the social housing in front of our people who either have to wait 20+ years or rent in the private sector or buy. No Four Star Hotels for the indigenous population 🏴
Keep the good work bro, homelessness is grown exponentially, it's good you highlight it
16:58 In Devon we have so many issues with fly tipping, mostly because the council have gone silly on regaulations at the recycling centres.
Sophisticated tippers dump on private land so they council wont touch it and up to the land owner (or public ((us)) ) to remove.
More conscientious tippers will dump next to bins on highways/laybys so at least it gets picked up at some point but its absolutely atrocious and a blight on the land.
You are a very saintly person. Thumbs up !

Can't blame people for wanting to vote for something different. Remains to be seen if it will actually make any positive change, only time will tell.

Awesome video mate
Thank you 🙏👍
You are such a kind man not to pass judgement on people who have become homeless - there is always a story to tell on each and everyone of them.

@@galegrazutis964 correct and end Mass Immigration, legal and illegal,
Problem is when they do they are now allowed to charge 90% of local market rent and are unaffordable to most in work so they would only house those on full benefits as they are as expensive as private renting. They need to bring back social rents and scrap "affordable" 90% rents that working people can't afford. The council where I am build new council homes or convert offices but the prices are too high. Very professional. Great channel 👍 I should add I never knew this about Cornwall. I'm truly shocked. What has this country become.
So what you’re saying is that people can never leave the town they are born in
@colindoherty1891 Hi Colin, no that's not what I'm saying.

It isnt the governments job to house and feed people.

Blair left 15 years ago. Move on . Fourteen years of tory mismanagement and corruption.

A big hello from Devon! 🙋👍
Shetland means ?? 😂
Another great video 👌
None of this serves the interests of people in power and it’s only a minority of them that care about other people as much as they care about themselves ie support policies to fix this
Thanks for the kind words and for stopping by and leaving the comment! It's appreciated thank you 👍

So many empty buildings, there's no need for people to be rough sleeping.
The 'housed' residents all brought up the same issues to be fair... It's clearly a combination of things
