Threatened with Violence in 'Tent Town' the UK's Most Deprived Region

  • I headed to the UK's Poorest County, Cornwall. Specifically Camborne the poorest town in Cornwall, during the unprecedented cost of living crisis of 2024, what I found seriously shocked me! When you think of Cornwall in the South West of the England, beautiful beaches with golden sand and blue seas come to mind. However what the tourists don't see, is that the county of Cornwall for a long time has been the most deprived and poverty stricken area of the UK. With some of the highest rates of Homelessness, Unemployment and Poverty levels to be found not only in the UK but in Europe also, Cornwall was one of only four areas within the UK that qualified for Poverty grants from the EU to assist with the community, however since Brexit these payments have stopped leaving the councils and other local authorities seriously under funded and unprepared to deal with the desperate fall out from this. I headed to the streets of Camborne to get an idea of the real situation on the streets, what I found truly shocked me... Homeless communities living in makeshift tent camps around the town, unprecedented levels of Crime and unemployment, Piles of Rubbish on the streets, Harrowing stories of Crime and violence from the locals living on the streets during Street Interviews. This is the Cornwall that the Tourists Don't See... Real Life for the residents of one of the UK's Poorest Towns.

@@jimbanda Cornwall always has had a seasonal economy, the last time I think it could truly be said that there was good employment in Cornwall was probably the 1970s. It was the closure of the tin mines that really damaged the local economy of several towns during the 1980s in a similar way to what happened with the Coal Mine in Wales and the North. There has never been much industry in Cornwall. Its a part of the country which has low wages and a high cost of living.

The poor and working class being pushed to one side, struggling to pay bills whilst the rest of Cornwall is being poshified (if that's even a word) I'm living amongst child abusing drug dealers and users, it is beyond horrible. Myself and my daughter haven't left our home in over two years due to threats of murder and constantly being abused, the police would rather victim shame and blame than actually help. The streets are quickly resembling the streets of Philadelphia (Kensington Avenue) here. All the rich are here buying their second homes that locals could only dream of living in/owning but the extreme low wage here doesn't permit such luxuries and don't get me started on the high taxes 😞 Thanks for sharing making more people aware of this beautiful place that's gone down the pan drastically

I went on holiday to Cornwall in about 1998 and I never realised any of this about Cornwall back then. I’d always thought it was quite posh but maybe I wasn’t really taking proper notice of things. And of course back then property will have been far more affordable for locals. Hopefully once the Tory government are out more will be done because of left to them the affordable housing crisis will never be solved since they don’t want it solved. A new mass council housing programme should be launched to provide social housing for people, these days builders only ever seem to build mansions, they ignore the needs of those on lower incomes.

Second homes, property prices, business rates, no more EU subsidies, no new affordable housing, no fault evictions, bankrupt local councils causing social service cuts, the decline of local industries, benefit cuts. They were all like slow bullets,: everyone saw disaster coming, no one did anything.
Cornwall is an unusual case as a county because, unlike more urbanised county areas, it has very low immigration stats. So this just goes to show how successive Tory governments have treated their own people, in mostly conservative constituencies.
Some people have made fortunes over the last decade, mostly at the expense of the most vunerable and working people, then they remove the wealth from circulation, pay as little tax as possible and claim non dom status.

Blackburn is a small city with approx 115,500 but has a total of 64 onion houses, back streets full of rubbish, ghetto areas with no go areas at night, shops closing down on a daily basis, public transport useless, homelessness rampant, streets full of illegal beggars, etc etc etc. What a wonderful country we now have to live in, i think not.

My parents moved to Camborne from London back in 1973 and I grew up in the town. We left when I was 18 years old in 1984. I think I lived there at the end of the period when the town could be described as relatively affluent. I used to walk through that Church cemetery every day as a short cut on my way to school. Its shocking to see it full homeless people living in tents.
The last time I visited was back in 2003 for my friends wedding, it was in sharp decline even back then and it looks at lot worse now if this video is anything to go by. Its sad to see it like this. I am glad I don't live there anymore. In fact I am glad I left the county, the standard of living in Hampshire is much better, its more friendly and less insular. I miss the coast and the pasties though.
I wouldn't mind visiting again sometime when I retire, I might even show my wife my old home town and visit Camborne one last time just for a trip down memory lane. That will be in about 8 years from now, hopefully the Town will be in better shape by then.

I've said it before many times but there will be no revival for Camborne and Redruth until they embrace their history which lives on in the hearts and minds of the people living in the area. If they turned both towns into a living museum of mining heritage and culture, people would flock from all over the world to see it and to find out about the incredible importance of these two old Cornish towns in the history of the industrial revolution, which went on to change the world.
You can't make Camborne and Redruth what they are not. They cannot and never will transform into the future. If both towns became an iconic centre of life as it was in the latter part of the 19th century, people dressing in period costume going about their business, working exhibits all over the place, tours, traditional old shops from the period, the future of both towns would be secured for generations to come.
Same over in Falmouth. Falmouth will never be regenerated if the sole focus remains on land based activities. Falmouth's future regeneration can only come from the sea. Again, if the town was turned into a mock up of traditional sailing based industries, with sailing competitions, open air workshops, traditional ship building academies etc it would do wonders for the town and again visitors from all over the world would flock to the town to partake in it's history in the making. Instead of which all of the water front land that could have been used to help regenerate the town's future all got sold off to private development companies to build luxury holiday homes along the waterfront. Absolute madness.
You cannot force towns to live in the future when their entire foundation has been built on the past. If you suddenly change the direction of a town and make it into something it is not little wonder when the plan backfires everything falls into disrepair and the towns in question lose their focus, their reason for existing. But will anyone listen? No. I've been beating this drum for almost 40 years and my words of advice fall on deaf ears where the extremely financially corrupt Cornwall Council is concerned and therein lies the problem.

Despite being the 6th most prosperous nation globally, what's evident in Camborne is not an isolated case. Poverty as you found in Camborne is prevalent across all major towns and cities in the UK, presenting a stark reality to that 'rich nation' . Furthermore, Britons face some of the highest taxation on the planet , prompting questions into the allocation of these funds raised? Notably, significant investment in crucial infrastructure like housing is evidently lacking despite the financial resources available.
An entire generation in the UK is growing without optimism or any prospect for the future. It's disheartening to acknowledge, but the United Kingdom is on its last legs -a reality that many haven't come to realise just yet.
Undoubtedly, the Tory government bears significant responsibility for this situation. However, those hopeful that a change in government will swiftly resolve these issues are sadly going to be disappointed. The familiar promises of increased investment in housing, health service and law and order from Labour MPs during their time in power but will undoubtedly fail to yield not one tangible improvement to see with your own eyes. Regrettably, the state of affairs you see now as in this video has reached a point of no return-it's a dire situation.
The solution is straightforward: when politicians or political parties grasp that human needs must prevail over corporate greed. It's when a party comprehends that profit doesn't equate to enabling someone to buy a home in Barbados, but rather it means profiting the lives of fellow human beings.
As of now, the UK has descended into a state of hopelessness, appearing lifeless. Unfortunately, many people are resigning themselves to this reality, accepting it as this is how normal life is in the United kingdom. A life of poverty, no hope and no prospect. It's beyond heartbreaking it's in short an absolute insult to humanity.

I live in Devon, its a very similar situation here. Thease same problems started years before Brexit. A town near me has 100s of perfectly fine empty homes, they have been empty years before Brexit, the real crime is they are empty, council or housing association owned yet those in the area on the housing list are told there are no homes available. Tents and caravans are increasing in number in our pretty towns and villages and authorities are gaining new powers to move thease people on.
As someone who was once made homeless through no fault of my own, I have first hand knowledge of the problems and unfairness and prejudice of trying to find a home especially in a wealthy country. Like many I've been forced to move away from the area I grew up in and see villages and towns deteriorated due to greedy landlords, second home owners and unfair rules and irresponsible funding from local government and councils.
