New Seiko Sumo vs. Old Seiko Sumo

  • In this video we take a look at the new SPB103 and compare it to the discontinued Sumo (my SBDC069) I was a bit skeptical when I first saw the announcement of the next generation Sumo, but I can say after seeing it in person, the updates make a noticeable difference. I think this is a really solid all around diver.

I think no camera can catch the way a 3rd-gen green Sumo looks in bright light. Just gorgeous. (Outside on a sunny day: "Hey Steve, whatcha doin?" "Lookin at my Sumo. Soooo pretty." "Hey, that IS nice!")

Bruce this is an awesome video being a owner of the Blumo it’s my favorite all time watch . As far as the cosmetic changes you’ve mentioned I wouldn’t challenge your views if I hadn’t just yesterday visited a jewelry store in Columbia Maryland that actually had the new Sumo in black . I handled the watch and tried on . To me the subtle changes to me take away what makes the Sumo the Sumo. The Sumo has personality and that’s what makes the watch the legend that it is. I personally love the Blumo and prefer my Blumo over the new release and the increase in price doesn’t ad to value for price paid. If I’m going to spend $850 or more I’d buy and a 061/063 or 051/053 . I just don’t think that a sapphire crystal and newer movement warrant a $350 increase . As far as value proposition the older Sumo watch are much better in my opinion.

Great comparison. I only want the factory sapphire crystal for my SBDC031, and I am good for it as my daily wear. I like the new bezel font of the new Sumo, but the indices on the face and handset of the new Sumo are a little less tool-ish and more dressy, which is not for me, but still unique. Overall, good improvements on a great watch.

I enjoy owning Seiko watches and have a particular liking for the Sumo SBDC031. Perhaps my favourite Seiko watch. This will sound crazy, but in some ways I enjoy wearing it more than I do my Grand Seiko SBGH267. Believe me when I say, I think the Sumo is a very beautiful watch. Beautiful New Sumo. I've owned my 1st Gen since 2013. I love it, quirks and all. I just had it regulated & it runs almost +0/-0 a day. Also, the New Sumo has, what appears to be a flat Saphire Crystal. The older version has a very slight domed shape which I prefer.

I decided to go with the old one even though new one is obviously improved. I think losing the bezel font and hands set is like loosing a dna of the sumo, it just didnt talk to me anymore. And what is the story with the unsigned crown, that looks cheap...

Hey Bruce, I recently got the Hulk Sumo and absolutely love it. Only place where I am really disappointed is the screw down crown action. It is very tough compared to my Monster and Samurai and sometimes it feels like I'm almost cross threading when I'm screwing it in. Sometimes it'll feel a little stuck and I'll need to back track the screwing in before I do it again. Is it normal for the crown of the sumo to be like this? I'm just a little disappointed to see it so much rougher than watches like the monster and Samurai which are much cheaper

Thank you for the excellent, well detailed review. I must say about 4 months ago or so, I received the new SPB103 Sumo and the SBDC051 on the same day, and holding them side by side, I immediately had the impression that the 051 was the sweeter, more expensive looking piece, partly because of its domed sapphire and Zoratsu polish. While I love the Sumo case design, on balance the 051 won me over, and I sold the new Sumo. They're both similarly priced.

Wonderful comparison, many thanks. Recently got a 2nd gen Blumo-Sumo and it is so fantastic. My hesitation for Gen-3 is the smaller hour-marker lume size...who would vote for less lume on a Sumo? e.g. even though the metal ring maybe smaller, they still added that white-filler ring between the lume and the metal. So the hour markers are now as small as the bezel pip? This has me baffled. I really hope that gen4 brings back as much lume as Seiko can sqeeze in. I mean, this is a Sumo...go for the Lume.

It’s a crap shoot with the accuracy- the 2x newer 6r35 movements I’ve had have been less accurate than my 4x 6r15s but with Seiko it really is luck of the draw. If I had a newer one that was off by a lot, I’d be inclined to pay a small fee for it to be regulated if I wore it regularly.

Interested in what you both chose? I rebought a sbdc033/blumo as I think it’s great value and has so much character but the mm200 (older ones and newer 6r35 models) wear really nice and have bracelets that for me are many levels above the sumo. If you’re wearing it as a one and done watch or your main watch and you want to be able to wear it for smarter occasions than the mm200 is probably the best bet. If (like me) you have a nice watch and need a beater or casual diver for holidays and knocking about the house or going over the football then the blumo does that great and is cheaper- plus I will feel less bad scratching a sumo as it’s a tool watch. The mm200 feels more like a good value desk diver.

    Bruce, Your work is outstanding.
I need your help in answering a question that has been nagging me.
I bought the Gen 3 green sumo from a Seiko boutique for approx. $850.
It lists the 6R35 movement, has the toned down font numerals on bezel insert, has the new indices and hands, and that deep green sunburst color. In all respects it matches the gen 3 you reviewed and compared to your blue coral gen 2.
My quandary is nowhere on the case back (or anywhere) does it list "sapphire crystal." Since I know the gen 3 comes with a sapphire crystal, I am perplexed why mine does not anywhere list sapphire crystal. Would you look at your case back and or investigate this issue and advise. Should I be concerned?

Bezel action has nothing to do with "old" vs "new". If you go in a store and compare two Turtles of the same generation, made in the same month, the actions will feel completely different. Each spring has small variations that affect how easily the bezel turns, and the noise it makes. There are additional factors like how much you have used your existing Blumo's bezel throughout the time you have owned it.

I like the sapphire upgrade on the new model. But the other changes are okay. Not digging the more common looking font on the bezel. When you think summo you think big and bold and though the case still says that, the rest does not. Then there is the big elephant in the room... The price increase.. come on, almost 40% increase for a few upgrades... For the money you can get say a Sinn. For about $400.00 morer a Sinn diver or a 104. I guess the plan for Seiko is to go up market, sell less watches for more money. Sorry, I'm a huge fan, have a Sumo, SKX007, Baby Tuna, Sarb033, Turtle 777 a few quartz chronographs, including a perpetual Sportura SSC359. And one of my grail watches.. The Emperor Tuna SBDX014. The Sumo was a tremendous value for under $500. I don't like the new font. I don't like the new hands. I don't need sapphire or ceramic. Is the new movement more accurate? And I don't like the SIXTY PERCENT price hike. I like my 031 better.

  • @chi-towncalifornia5916

I have to say I’m not bowled over by the new Sumo. It’s more expensive than it should be, which kills the Sumo’s value factor to me. I owned an SBDC031 black Sumo, and for its price, it offered Baby Marine Master quality for slightly more than Turtle and Samurai money. I only sold mine because it was a little too big for my wrist (wrist contour was excellent, though).
