    Considering how long Activision have been around there are a lot of dormant IPs that might see a refresh or a release now.
    Those studios sacrificed upon the altar of yearly CoD releases, might get opportunities to be truly creative again.
    And most importantly, this provides a means to clean house in those studios that allowed serious misconduct to flourish. It would be interesting to find out what the Devs at these studios think of this deal.

    • @icedmosquito109
      @icedmosquito109 2 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      What makes you think that's going to happen? You think Microsoft is going to shell out money to revive those games? They're going to focuse on online multiplayer games they couldn't care less about the game you're thinking of.

    • @benjamindurkin
      @benjamindurkin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +122

      @@icedmosquito109 GamePass makes me think that. There are a lot of IPs that people remember fondly that haven't seen a release in a long time, and there are enough studios that have people working there who remember them fondly too.
      Whatever you might think about the new Battletoads game, it hit a nostalgic nerve and provided an experience that GamePass users could try out risk free.
      I also remember when we heard that Toys for Bob were being moved onto CoD development, and feeling that those devs didn't really want to be doing that.
      GamePass thrives on a variety of content for a wide variety of audiences. Reviving some old IPs increases goodwill from a demographic that feels that historic franchises are being forgotten. Considering Phil Spencer's comments on game preservation, backwards compatibility and legal emulation, it would be interesting if they followed through by making games from the 80's playable to today's players in some fashion.

    Well the obvious part of Blizzard’s fallout has been the extreme lack of connection from the business side of the company to the player base. We saw this with Diablo and WoW. The complaint forms have a huge amount of data that can be easily compiled to improve company revenue via customer satisfaction. There is a fair bit of evidence that Microsoft knows how to listen to players and step back when they make a mistake (such as when trading Xbox games was at risk. The backlash responded in company changes.)
    When looking at the giant powerhouse of CoD on the other hand, many longtime players have moved on due to repetitive gameplay. Players are showing they’re not interested in paying full price for the same game with minor graphical improvements (Nobody gives a crap about your fish physics in CoD!!!) and Activision will have to find an impressive angle to expand the gameplay and bring players back. Likely how Pubg changed the game when it came to shooters- the next “big thing” will have to be found. Zombies probably represent the highest opportunity here. People want something fun and new badly, but they have been going downhill since Black Ops II released. Perhaps merging these two features in a creative fashion.
    Candy crush? Keep selling to the old ladies. Win-win.

    This feels like one of those deals where Microsoft was just sort of waiting in the wings, watching things unfold before finding the right moment to swoop in and scoop up studios at a much lower cost than they might have had to pay if Activision/Blizzard wasn't in the state it's currently in, which is smart thinking from a business stand point . But I think one of the big talking points should this deal go through will be how Microsoft handles whether Kotick leaves or stays and if he stays what kind of role he'll play going forward. It's going to be an interesting watch though, of that I'm certain.

      The thing that concerns me is that the issues at Activision aren’t new and the state only decided to get involved in the past year, around the time Microsoft picked up Bethesda. I wonder if the billionaire head of the company gave the state the push to finally peruse legal action and weaken Activision to lower the bill in this purchase. I don’t think that is outside of Microsoft’s level of influence in the state of California.

    It should take Microsoft around 10 years to make their money back on this deal. They could probably make it back sooner if they can help find a way to get the Blizzard IP's back to where we know they can be. Pretty much every single Blizzard game has a player base that is a fraction of what it could be only if the games were not so mismanaged and some are just flat out abandoned. A big part of that is the culture that Bobby Kotick fomented that only focused on short term gains and was big on cutting corners via firing staff and pushing microtransactions over game quality.

    The potential of Microsoft just overpowering the game industry is real now. All these acquisitions show that they're finally ready to put all of their Microsoft resources into gaming. This is Microsoft biggest acquisition as a COMPANY and has everyone talking, not just the gaming industry. If Gamepass really does end up becoming the Netflix of gaming there would legitmately be no stopping them. Think about how Netflix were the first ones to get the streaming platform down and how far ahead of everyone they are to this day. It's scary to think how much bigger Microsoft will be if that happens and that's precisely the reason they made this acquisition.

    Personally, I think that the more studios with access to hefty recourses, such as those of Microsoft, the more they will be able to compete with larger franchises. This could mean new, amazing franchises, maybe reboots of things we miss, and more competition to make the next best thing and become a AAA studio. This kind of stuff can only be beneficial to us as consumers.

      One thing you have to consider is that, with new management and a restructuring of the company, many devs who left may be asked to return with better wages and treatment. This would allow continuity of current projects, and keep the devs of other franchises that we know will have more sequels. It could actually go a long way to making Activision/Blizzard a stronger, more supported company. It could also help bolster a lot of their smaller studios with better funding, and more opportunities to go mainstream with their games. In my opinion, it doesn’t matter who owns the studios as long as they have some free will and individuality. The more studios with good funding competing to create great games can only mean good things for us as the consumer.

Because with Activision out of the way Microsoft MIGHT be able to something much better with their games, Microsoft seems to have not jumped on the "loot box, games as a service, NFT" ban wagon as much or as hard as the other gaming studios, so here's hoping now that Microsoft owns Bethesda and will own Blizzard and other stuios, we will start seeing some actual GOOD games, rather then the GARBAGE that Activision has been producing, coming to Game pass and PC.

      If B does not happen, then the Gaming Industry has basically fallen. If A Falls through, then the Gaming Industry has rotted too much to save. So, it's a failure if at least A does not actually happen, like I suspect it might not. While quite a few people (The Majority) do see this kind of acquisition a good thing, the others (The Minority) do not, or at least see how corrupt this can end up becoming and want to stop it.
