  • In this video I show changing out a delta shower valve. I also discuss what i would do in the case of someone damaging their shower valve and what i would do to replace or repair the valve to get the house water back on.

After researching my Delta faucet, I found my issue was the cartridge. I watched videos on how to replace the cartridge. Your video was the only one that mentioned the possibility of damaging the assembly. In addition you explained to brace the assembly too. However, the videos I saw did mention to wrap material around the assembly so when you use plumbing pliers you don’t damage the brass. There is no doubt that I would have manhandled that cartridge assembly breaking it just like you did. At least I won’t make that mistake. Great job on making the video showing people what can go wrong.

I broke mine behind the shower incloser and up against an outside wall without the luxury of access…..now I guess I tear the upper part of the shower apart or figure out how to fish a new valve through the floor. Thanks and love your shirt brotha! God is good

I couldn't get my brass bonnet nut off mine so I ordered a new one from Amazon (around 9-10 bucks) which appears to be stainless. I used my dremel and cut the old nut off and found a lot of green corrosion on the threads. I cleaned it up, installed my new cartridge and greased the nut with Permatex Silicone Brake Grease, which is the green stuff that's supposed to be safe with plastic and rubber. Thank you for this video as I was prepared for this job and didn't wring off my plumbing while attempting the repair. FWIW I did cut into the threads just a little accidentally but the new bonnet nut screwed on just fine as if the damage wasn't there.

Great Video on the Shower Cartridge removal. I love WD-40, so before I do anything, I WD it, sometimes it works, sometimes it don't, but what the "Hey", a couple of Squirts doesn't hurt, before I try other methods. Maybe I'll get Lucky. Thanks again for your Helpful Videos.

Thanks for the information! Our shower valve is pointing down and leaks. Plumber says previous owner obviously tried to repair it themselves and bent/twisted the pipes so now it will have to be replaced. I wanted to understand what they are quoting $1200 for. I definitely get it now.

I bent the valve without relieving water pressure. Now quote $950 to install new set😢. Learn to call plumber next time before DIY. It not worth it.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. Atleast you attempted to make the repair. Most likely would not have changed the cost. Most plumbers do not attempt to repair them anyhow.

It all started because the water isn't hot enough. I first couldn't get the hex locknut off, so I spent an hour trying to drill it out. Didn't work. Ended up breaking the handle and the cartridge. So I had to replace the cartridge but couldn't get the ring off. I eventually got it off after using penetrating oil. Then I couldn't get the cartridge all the way in. My smart ass decided to try to use the ring to force the cartridge in. That caused me to apply too much pressure in the clockwise direction. I ended up damaging one of the valves in the back. Now it's going to turn into hundreds or a thousand dollar repair! Can a plumber replace the valve without having to cut out an access panel on the back?

@@homebuilt8694Yeah eventually I was able to rip out the handle but damaged the valve assembly. I ended up replacing the assembly myself for about $100 including patching up the wall.

Ok appreciate the video. We need to resolve poor pressure through a Delta 13/14 tub shower valve. When a "NEW cartridge, 46074 " is in place we still are not getting enough tub or shower water volume. When the new cartridge (correct one) is in place the volume is significantly reduced. It is as though the valve itself has blockage to the tub & ultimately to the shower. The volume is so slow you have to hold up on the spout mechanism to finally push enough water volume to shower. Your thoughts?

Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment and check out the video. I am not exactly sure what you are dealing with. It could be that a piece of debris got into the valve during removal. It could be that the replacement valve has an issue. It may also be time for a new diverter. I have had issues with diverters over the years. The oring inside stops sealing off enough water to force the water up to the shower head. Hope this helps. Sorry for the delayed response. Trying to get better about getting to comments in a timely manner. Take care

What if you don't shear the valve completely off....just turned it a few degrees? I did this and I'm still getting water to the valve/cart but showerhead not so much

Curious what happened in your situation. Mine is also an angle but the water pressure seems fine for shower head and faucet. But I’m worried if I did something worse

My only concern would be the tubes in the back are soldered If for some reason they would be slowly dripping you would never know. Hope this helps and sorry for the delayed response, Good luck and take Care!

So I did this. At the joints where yours sheared, on the hot water tube of the valve body, where there is that black gasket around the joint.. I have a small pin hole that is misting. Any suggestions? Jb water weld?

@@joerichmar6041 Thanks for checking out the channel. In my experience i have never had alot of luck with patch repair type products or fix in a can. I would replace the valve if at all possible. If it was a drain pipe with no pressure or something. sometimes you can get by with a sealing repair for alittle while. generally not on something pressurized though. Good luck!

    • @homebuilt8694

I was converting the entire house to pex so it didnt much matter. I would usually look for heavy oxidizing, weak joints, or if it looked like someone had already been making repairs to the piping due to issues. Thanks for checking out the channel!

I feel bad telling you that those brass pex fittings will corrode and leak after around 10 years just like the copper did. you likely have hard water so rather use your plastic pex fittings they never corrode.
I go around replacing the brass fittings after bad leaks they just rust away and burrrssssssttttt suddenly ohh god thats a pain to watch how peoples houses get flooded
