I bought my dream Rolex ...and it didn't work out.

  • More of a story time this week, rather than another review. I wanted to share my experience buying my 'dream watch' a Rolex Air King 116900, this was going to be my exit watch... my final piece in the collection. It didn't work out that way, but I learnt a few things along the way and am still grateful for my time with the Rolex.

    Thanks for sharing the experience and the current watches you have are a nice bunch to enjoy the rotation of without the necessity of a grail , i think the head tries to convince the heart it wants it but if there's no feeling ..... at least you gave it your best shot to try and make it mean something to the heart so you did the right thing without incurring much or any loss.

    I didn't quite like the Explorer 1 36mm because of how slender and petite it is, but once I got the call and bought it from the AD, it's slowly winning over all my other watches, even my Reverso Duoface which I was so much in love. Now I wear the Explorer exclusively.
    Sometimes the watch you hate will be the one you love the most.

    Love this content. As I’ve moved more through my collecting journey I’ve realized that some stuff you think is a grail ends up not working out, and other stuff you didn’t think you’d love, becomes your all time favorite. Long way of saying I’m now a speedy pro fan forever after spending a lot of money to figure that out lol!

    I felt the same way about my OP41, which I've sold to get a DJ36 fluted bezel jubilee blue dial, it was love at first sight, still love it after some time, it's priceless, the dial keep changing colors during the day due to light effect, that takes the watch to another level of freshness

    I picked up my dream watch Ex1 124270. It was perfect when I initially test drove it at the AD, but I just didn’t connect with how it wore on my wrist. It’s a small watch, but I felt in time I’d learn to appreciate it. After all, every review was so positive and I was sold on the “perfect dimensions “. 9 months later and it just never felt right and I had to let it go. Like you I simply recouped the price paid.

    Cool take. I have a 2002 Rolex DJ with the Tapestry dial, and there was a time where it just wasn't getting much wrist time anymore. I eventually swapped out the oyster bracelet with the cheap clasp for a Jubilee with a better clasp, and it feels almost like a new watch again. Still doesn't quite get the time that some of my other affordable pieces get, but a keeper for sure.

    My first watch was the Seiko Sarb033 and I after loads of research I purchased it and was so unenthused with it that I didn't wear it for years. Now it's one of my favs behind a birth year manufactured watch I purchased last year.

    Great topic and new subscriber, here. I had the same experience with my SLA033; I have always loved the Willard more than any other and, once this very expensive ($4250US) L.E. was released in July of 2019, I had to own it. Well, all was rosy for a while - but my love for it faded after a couple of years. The problem I discovered gradually over time was that a slight breeze would scratch my shiny grail mercilessly. "Diashield" and "zaratsu" polishing - while sounding great - became meaningless. Unfortunately, these premium treatments weren't the least bit scratch resistant. I've always babied my watches and wore it daily for a year and a half. The bezel was an absolute scratch magnet and I quickly fell out of love with my SLA033. I recently sold it for a loss but, like you, learned through the experience. Cheers and love your channel.

    My first luxury watch was and still have till this day my Rolex submariner date. I purchased this watch as a celebration of my first real corporate job decades ago. It has all the wear scratches and patina today and traveled with me to many countries. Sure I would get tired of it after wearing it constantly for several months. But after a rotation with my other watches, I’m right back to the honey moon period of I when I first acquired this watch. I can never sell it even though I bought it for 1/3 what it’s worth today.

    “Watches I think are a little bit like shoes”…that’s what I tell my wife when she asks me why I need another watch as I stare at the 50 pairs in her closet. I completely understand your take on the Air King. I fully admit to having an unhealthy lust for a Milgauss, but I’m hesitant to save up for one. Buyer’s remorse (or losing the emotional connection) is a real concern, especially when spending that much time and money to get one. At least with the Rolex you had a better chance of breaking even after selling it.

    What a great reflection you have shared and I am having a dilemma whether to get a Rolex Sea Dweller two tone or not. Still on the fence and thinking.
    However, it's so true what you say that as times as buyers we keep thinking about "resale value" instead of the memories we will make with the watch.
    I have Omegas, Tudor, Breitling, Hamilton, Tissot and 2 Rolexes. (1 handed down date just and a DSSD JC 116660).
    So I am thinking of another Rolex to close the chapter on my collecting. All my timepieces have a story to tell actually, both good and bad memories.

    Just love the honesty in your videos. I bought an Omega second hand which i actually loved but sadly it didn't live up to the sales pitch and in fact stopped working. Fortunately I was able to get a refund and move on. I have had a similar experience with guitars where in fact the so-called grail instrument is a big let down and a less expensive model blows you away.

      It's a great bracelet and there's nothing wrong with the watch for some people it'll truly connect. It's hard to put a finger on what does and doesn't work for us as collectors sometimes. Like with anything though it takes to realise this connection or to end up selling. The avenger 43 is way more enjoyable for me than the air king was. The allure of Rolex to me is their build quality, heft, fit and finish. They have it all. Yes they are expensive. I have a few and didn’t bond with all of them. One in particular I waited for was a DJ41 blue motif dial. I loved that watch in pictures. Got the call from AD, went in, picked it up and brought it home. Wore it for a week and said hmmm the dial on this watch ONLY pops in the outdoor sunlight. When inside it almost looked black. Lack of AR coating on DJ makes a dark dial hard to read. I sold it for what I paid for it and moved on. Then I have my sea dweller…a watch I put on last November and barely have taken it off. It’s been with me for my travel and every event I’ve had. You are right you don’t know until you try it on.

    • @nextonthewrist
      @nextonthewrist  หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you can get it through the AD it's a huge advantage that you can sell at the same cost (or more) if you don't bond with it as you did with the DJ. Interesting experience - I've never handled the sea dweller but it looks really nice in pictures. Happy you found one to really bond with, thanks for the comments 🙂 🍻

    My story is the opposite. I thought I'd just like my Heuer Monaco when I bought it, but I loved it. Then, I bought a metal bracelet for it, and now it's my main watch, and I doubt I'll ever sell it. Whereas the Tudor Pelagos I bought around the same time gets worn about once a week. I own it as a part of my collection. It goes on my wrist quite often and I like it a lot. Nothing to do with a 'commonly desired cloud of objects' for me and why I didn't bond with it. I have a lot rarer watches that I like a lot more, there's so many different things you can value (or not) in a watch that gives us all such different tastes. Objectively like I say its a great watch, but it's also a mass produced watch from the world's most famous watch brand so obscure it definitely isn't 😅

    Watches.... sigh....I lusted over a Speedy... bought the 1861.... sold it...a year later bought it again as I realised I made a mistake

    Here’s what I think the problem was. You got the wrong version. I’ve been eyeing that model for a long time. I loved the pop of green, the text, the very black dial, but something wasn’t clicking for me. It seemed off, didn’t like the white gold numerals and something about that 5 bothered me as well. I also really wanted crown guards on my Rolex. I couldn’t pull the trigger. The only other Rolex I liked was interested in was the Skydweller. It was a bit chunky so I let the idea of owning a Rolex go. Then the new AK was released and it fixed everything, improving the weird lume thing. Did even hesitate, I pulled the trigger straight away. The watch is thin and very dynamic. Absolutely love it! So glad I waited. I would not have bonded with the 116900. My Rolex got ''beaten'' by a Hamilton... I ended up selling my Rolex because I found myself choosing the Hamilton over Rolex more and more...
    Try to connect to a watch not just because it's Rolex, I ask people: hey nice Rolex what model is this and 8/10 they answer idk it's a present watch... BRUH

      Yeah I think name on the dial alone is all some people desire. As it goes with branding in other walks of life like fashion and cars... Good to hear the Hamilton is serving you well, I hope to pick one up soon, I quite like the frogman in 41mm. Thanks for the comments 🍻

    I bought a Rolex 6 years ago and sold it after a year, like yourself with no emotion, i didnt miss it at all. If you are into aviation try an iwc mark 18 or 20, ive got a mark 18 and ended up selling all my other watches, included an omega seamaster and tudor bb58.

    The newer 2023 Air king seems to have quite a few refinements over the older model. Perhaps the new one might have been a keeper for you.
    I’m considering it or the new Explorer 40mm.

      Nah, its still to close in the design language for a crown guard, a zero added to the 5 and thinner case for it to make that much of a difference 😂. At the end of the day, he'll still have a watch with the same DNA as the watch he didn't bond with. It's the overall design he didn't bond with, not like a few additions like zero or crown guard will make a difference lol.

    • @nextonthewrist
      @nextonthewrist  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hard to be sure but I think it's fundamentally the same so I guess it'd be the same outcome, I do like the addition of the crown guards though on the updated version. Thank you both for the comments 🙂👍

    I felt I had to have a Rolex to be a true watch enthusiast and didn't really like any of them. When Rolex revamped the Air-King a few years ago I thought that would be my one Rolex. I put it on at the ADs and felt so flaaaat I thought it looked shite. I said no thanks, and even took myself off the GMT-II Pepsi wait list. I just felt like Rolex is for douchebags and I am no longer buying into the hype. I love all my other watches but I'll never get a Rolex as they are just too overpriced anyway. The hype is dying down and they are losing their appeal. Maybe they will start to make good watches again. I hope so. I much preferred the Rolex of the late 90's - early 2000's. Modern Rolex is not great.

    • @nextonthewrist
      @nextonthewrist  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I haven't had a lot of hands on experience with new rolexes, mainly because of the shortage of stock and also because I don't want to reward a business model that makes you jump through hoops to get the 'desirable' pieces. That said I feel your sentiment is becoming more and more widespread....I do like the watches they're well made and nicely finished so I try and separate the object and material from the crypto bro types that were ramming them down everyone's throat on social media a couple of years ago, not always easy though 😂

    1. The modern Air King is butt ugly
    2. I never understood the "making memories with a watch" thing. To me good memories and anything I happen to be wearing are largely separate. Same way I don't commemorate the socks and underwear I happen to wear on the day of the promotion

    • @nextonthewrist
      @nextonthewrist  5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      It's each to their own isn't it? I have some great memories tied with watches of holidays or events that make me smile same as I do with music and songs that bring back lovely memories - and I am grateful for these. I love association, but obviously you can't force it otherwise I'd still have the AK 😆

    I have a Rolex Explorer 2, a Tudor Pelagos and a TAG Heuer Carrera amongst others. Yet I always gravitate towards wearing a white faced Seiko Chronograph Sports 150 from the early '90's. It's had 30 years wear. I fell in love with it in a Jeweller's shop window and bought it new for £250 (which was a fortune to me back then) it's a quartz movement and I recently paid £500 to have the original mineral glass replaced (a million scratches) with a Sapphire Crystal and a new replacement original quartz movement from a vintage supplier. The bracelet is so worn it moves like liquid and the case carries the scars of six years worn in the Army and a further 24 years of work and holidays. I ended up owning a Rolex Daytona that was my 'Holy Grail Watch' for decades and that I always envisaged wearing for my daughter's Wedding. I never 'felt' it and sold it giving her the proceeds as a deposit on her house and walked her down the aisle wearing my old Seiko instead. That old watch was on my wrist before I met her mother and when we got married. I know all too well that a watch has soul... and that it is not always the watch that you'd choose that chooses you.

    • @nextonthewrist
      @nextonthewrist  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's a great story, that Seiko chronograph sounds like it has so much character, so much history and like you say... soul! I'm happy to know others have had similar experiences. I wonder if it's harder to find this soul in newer mass produced watches, it can be found for sure, my mido was new - but not so easy as something with a story and history already? 🤔 When you feel this connection you just know. Thanks for the enjoyable read and here's to another 30 years service of your Seiko chronograph 🍻

      Well shared indeed. My first was a Casio Edifice Chrono. White dialed, classy design n Very Comfy... I love that watch n wore it to bits... There's just something about it...
      It broke when I dropped it accidentally a year ago n it broke my heart... 💔
      Been trying to repair it but to no avail... I've moved on to mechanical watches like Seiko, Orient, Tisell...
      But I still keep that little fella in my collection...
      Yes, you're both right... It has a soul... 💖 🤗 💯
