I thought I'd have a bit of fun and pull together a more affordable alternatives list. Get 99% of the watch for a fraction of the price.
    1. OP: Seiko 5 SNXS $100
    2. Submariner: Citizen NY0040 as used by the Italian navy $150
    3. Yachtmaster: Seiko 5KX SRPE74K1 - embossed Gothic numerals on a gold PVD bezel. As tasteful as the original. $300
    4. Explorer II: JDM Seiko SBSC009 GMT. One of very few watches that captures the white, orange and steel look while not being a carbon copy. $500
    5. Explorer: Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical $500. Or any other black dial field watch. (yawn, imo)
    6. 1908: Glycine Moonphase GL0385 $400 or rose gold PVD Seiko Cocktail Time Bellini $300.
    7. Sea Dweller: Invicta Grand Diver in gold PVD. A chunk without spending a chunk of change. $200
    8. GMT Master: Seiko 5 Sports ‘Blueberry’ GMT SSK003K1 if you want the look. Or if you want the watch that beat the GMT Master to market in 1953, the Glycine Airman. $400-600
    9. Daytona: Tissot PRS516 or Hamilton Intra-matic $1500
    10. Datejust: Tissot Bridgeport T0454071103300. Coin edge bezel, romans and fancy lance hands. More Bregeut Classique vibes but ewually eye-catching.

I doubt anyone cares, but ive wanted the bluesy since I was 14 years old (20 years ago), and after waiting since putting my name in the ring since September 2020, I finally got the call today. Literally. A moment which should bring absolute joy was one of hesitation and worry. $16k for something that was 14 only a few years ago, and a brand pushing away normal people like myself through the actions of their AD. I thought I would be excited, but now im sweating about it financially and im more impressed by its modern competitors. Almost nothing really grabs me about Rolex. the skydweller is the first cool complication i've seen on a rolex. (i'm not sure how elevated their chronos are.) To be fair, most makers aren't really doing much in the way of complications, there's the whole moonphase perpetual calendar side, the chrono spectrum, and then wild stuff like repeaters that might as well not exist, since they're almost always limited, or just really expensive, since they're among the most difficult. And not useless, vision impaired and people on watch who need night vision and timekeeping, plus anyone who doesn't want to wake themselves up completely in the middle of the night with their phone.

    • @mkyhou1160
      @mkyhou1160 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

It’s because when you have been watch collecting for a while, you realize the mantra is true - quickest way to lose interest in a watch is to buy it. It’s much better make money when you get bored than lose it. Hence, most serious collectors end up at Rolex. I have a black dial Explorer 2 right now, took 2 years to get from AD, love it, and if I ever need can easily cash in for a slight profit, or trade up to a higher end watch. Rolex levels you up, put your name down for a model you like, you won’t regret it. One day I’d like to get to a Day Date, Royal Oak or Overseas. Moving up the Rolex chain will get you there, these other watches will slow you down.

    • @WestCoastAce27

@@mkyhou1160 sorry, this is not true. TRUE watch collectors, do their homework and only buy a watch when they’re confident they’ll be happy with it forever. They aren’t ‘getting bored’ with a watch and selling it in 6 months or a few years. And if they do sell a watch they aren’t worried about depreciation because they bought the watch, wore it, and enjoyed it. As eggsll correctly pointed, consumer products were never meant to be for profit.

@@WestCoastAce27disageee - this is what people think is going to happen - they research a watch, are sure it will be perfect and for life, then it doesn’t work out that way. @@mkyhou1160 I think you’ve hit on something that I don’t think quite addresses the point that @WestCoastAce27 was making.
Yes, aesthetics change and jewelry aesthetics change as well. So, yes, there is a sense that you may not stay in love with the aesthetics of a watch.
If I understand the point that WestCoast was making is that one can understand their aesthetic sensibility well enough to build a watch collection that is timeless and will not require flipping.
My point is that the nature of watches, like any jewelry, the enjoyment is in the wearing. If you wear a watch, you’re going to get scuffs and damage to the watch, which lessens the value on the second-hand market.
It makes more sense to me to buy pieces that fit one’s aesthetic and not think about the resale value because you’ll never get what you think it’s worth to you.

The one advantage of Rolex which perhaps isn’t discussed enough is this:
-they have such critical mass and volume that i know if i leave my family a watch after i die, i know they can just get it serviced and wear it for another 80years

I have not worn them in years (probably should sell them). So many more interesting watches both in my collection and in the wild!

Great stuff again. Some interesting choices too. Coincidentally I was just in a Rolex AD yesterday to "register my interest" in the Explorer. Something I've always wanted and just needed to get the wife's approval. She was like wait, I thought you were getting it, then I had to sit her down and have the talk. I explained to her all i'm doing is hoping they call me before the undertaker does. She was so confused. Either way, they were actually very nice, way better than I expected. The gentleman was older and we just started talking watches. it was an hour before closing and the other people were very helpful as well. I wasn't even dressed nice so I thought I was going to get the cold shoulder. So my name is on the list....we'll see where that gets me.

Excellent summary from an obviously very knowledgeable watch aficionado…. I had about twelve “serious” watches (£3,000+ each I mean) until recently….too much money tied up in watches that weren’t being worn. I’m down to four now; Rolex Sea Dweller James Cameron, Zenith Pilot Chronograph Annnual Calendar, Girard Perregaux Laureato Chronograph and Panerai Luminor. Four is still too many…. I want to keep the Girard Perregaux (gift from the missus) and swap the rest for a rose gold on Oysterflex Sky-Dweller….

Rolex is the only brand that is famous among those people who do not know anything about watches, which is why it is sought after by all those people who are *not rich or wealthy* but who want to *make people believe* that they are rich or wealthy.
For the same price, Omega offers mechanically superior watches. Those who buy an Omega do so because they are so wealthy that they don't care about people's opinions or the future value of the watch, and especially they don't need a watch to show off to prove their wealth because its already clear.
Remember that Silvio Berlusconi *never* had a Rolex, but he gifted them to his subordinate employees, while he wore Cartier.
Indeed, Rolex is extremely famous in the world for being the favorite watch of used car salesmen.
That's it, if you don't drive an Aston Martin nor a Maserati and you bought an Explorer or a DJ or a Submariner everyone will think its fake.
If its not fake, that's even worse, because everyone will think you have a huge complex about your lack of real money that you need to compensate by showing off a wealth you don't have.
Never forget that today many dealers sell Rolex on a monthly mortgage (this makes me laugh and being sad at the same time).

Many excellent points. As it happens, I'm about to purchase an Explorer and have looked long and hard for alternatives. Unfortunately, I've come up short. The Railmaster with its brushed dial is not my cup of tea, and it's also larger. Omega made a much more refined limited edition as part of their 1957 trilogy but it is unavailable now new in the box. The Aqua Terra is a great watch but those shark's teeth and its size not what I'm looking for. In 36mm, the Explorer really does occupy a unique position. All the best.

@@drevyek1785 Yes, I should have mentioned the BB36. It is surely the closest to the Explorer. I went into the AD to have a look, the same place I'm on the waitlist for the Explorer, and the salesperson thought I'd always wish I'd gotten the Explorer, so I passed on it. In fact, he told me to buy the Explorer from Chrono24 or Ebay now as I was unlikely get one from him anytime soon. And that's what I did just a few moments ago. I appreciated his candor but won't likely buy anything else from this AD again. I'd purchased a Rolex for my wife and a Black Bay Pro from him but that didn't matter, apparently. All the best.

I have friends that will not look at anything other than a Rolex, but then they are not into watches, and know nothing about these options you've chosen. So many great recommendations here. I've tried on a SeaQ and it's a proper stunner. Comparing an IWC Mark to the Explorer I is also a great idea. They made a 36mm version of the Mark XVIII. My favourite is the 38mm Mark XV, which is a luxury tool watch of similar size to the 36mm Oyster case. A timeless design just like the 14270, but with a printed dial which I think a tool watch should have. These can still be found for half the price of an 114270, although they've been rising rapidly in recent years.

Absolutely wonderful take on the big "R"'s alternatives. I have always been a fan of the brand and have owned over 20 steel sports models in my 60 plus years, that being said, I have felt that Rolex has abandoned me as a loyal customer who just wants a really good watch to be available to me, when I want it, without playing their stupid A.D. games. So, I divested myself of my Rolex's and have enjoyed discovering the likes of BlancPain, JLC, IWC, Omega, Glashutte, and Grand Seiko.
