  • Watercolorpainter Amid El Haddad came over to Holland for the Masters of Watercolour, organized by IWS Holland. I like his ordinary subjects and the way he combines drawing with watercolourpainting. We had a conversation in Leiden where he stayed to give a few workshops for The Masters of Watercolour.

“When you paint you have to disengage your mind…” “…you don’t choose your subject - the subject chooses you…” so much here! Fantastic interview. And it had that wonderful quality of two friends talking in a cafe! Thanks Titus and Amid. Profound!

I’ve been living in a state of deep, dark grief lately. I’ve found myself turning to watercolor and drawing as a means of coping, and helping me guide my own way through the emotions that come with being in this state. To me, watercolor is a perfect representation of grief and the uncertainty of life as Amid spoke about the life that watercolor takes on. Unknown, uncontrollable, and sometimes unforgiving. We have to surrender ourselves and our egos to the way we see the world, and the way our art wants to speak through us.

In my opinion the natural way of being an artist is doing what your heart feels and what your brain expresses, like Amid identifies himself ( if I understand it right) EMOTIONs, it’s communicative way that will let your brain show how to move your hand ( by painting) that will make you feel free. Thanks for sharing this video.

This interview was so helpful. I loved the analogy of telling watercolor to go one place and then changing your mind, that will stay with me, I do that a lot and will think about how I can correct that approach when I go to paint the next time. I would have never have had the benefit of this conversation had you not posted it, thank you very much.

This was a great conversation as many have already said. But what was really great was to hear how two very creative and accomplished artists think about their craft. One gets the feeling that many of the insights and points of view that were shared were spontaneous and seemed to surprise the both of you. Like, "here's a thought I never expressed quite this way, but hmmm, it seems pretty right". What also came across very clearly was that there's no one way to create a watercolor - or any painting for that matter. But it does require a certain level of experience, and perhaps training - whether through a workshop or on one's own - to begin to achieve results. As a lifelong sketcher and fairly recent painter, I can readily attest to that. When I started doing watercolor I approached it more like oil painting - trying to get all the details in at once. Watching you and Amid and seeing your work, and having done more of my own, I now see that I must let the water play more of a role. The evidence of the effects of water are probably the most important part of the medium. I think the more confident and experienced one is with those characteristics and possibilities, the happier you'll be. Thank you for sharing this.

This was the second viewing of your video. It is good to hear the technical and mental preparations one makes prior to final painting, including using sketch books and plain aire preliminaries. The idea that resonated with me is that one learns something from every “failure”. It is an opportunity to learn from each attempt, even when not up to one’s hopes ( not expectations ).

Thanks, I am a 59 year old beginner, that just started and this was really interesting and helpful ❤ I approach watercolor like my cooking, in where I just skim through the recipe and then go by feeling😅

Excellent interview, Titus! I hope you will do more. This particular rhythm and dynamics of watercolor as a medium took me so many hours to comprehend. It feels sometimes like building trust with a wild animal. It takes lots of patience and a willingness to learn the process from the perspective of the tools you're using (the brush, the paint, and the paper, etc.) It's a gift to have a moment to think deeply about art. Thank you!

I so enjoy these videos. Even though I don't paint in watercolour I am taking a lot out of the vids. Maybe not the technique itself but the mindset, the concepts, painting with emotion. Man, I have so much to learn! I wish I had more time, more time. Cheers Titus!

    Don’t let art become pretentious.
A person can put a couple of coloured squares on a canvas, a dead shark in a tank; or a bed unmade,
Some people will see this as art and be amazed by it and some of us will laugh. We are all moved by various things.
