It was a long way but I finally finished the watercolor for Ulbo. It got a lovely frame and I will deliver it later this week. Now I start another commissioned work for Daryll's office. I am still thinking of the conversation I had with watercolorpainter Amid El Haddad the other day. Speaking about this I notice why it could be useful to compare (your) styles. And why not.
Thank You Titus. An old saying is, "If you are not the lead elephant the view never changes". I don't compare my art to others as I will always be looking at their backside. :D
Oh good it isn’t healthy to compare ourselves in that light. That was also why I disliked forced art competitions in my youth, I thought everyone deserved an award, never smiled for those pictures 😊

I'm really enjoying this series of videos very much. Discourse of Intellectual - educational and grammatical content of watercolour practice is imperative to the student.
In my search for relativity pertaining to painting I do remember finding the following statements: In an educated mind thought precedes action - Always do NOTAN studies of your subject prior to painting - Put difference within and around your shapes - Gather your masses like a Shepard & fracture them like a Mason - Think more to paint Less - Make interesting intervals & patterns with the relationships of shapes. Imply and apply hard - soft - found or lost edges. Attempt not to use a single colour but do mix - manipulate & modulate many colours on your paper - Create plane changes they are pathways into depth - Plan your process & process your plan - Imagination is more important than knowledge - Think from general to the specific - One must create states of feeling - The beauty of a painting is in its design - Identify with shapes not things - Ambiguity creates a depth of unknowing - Look upon your subject as a design - An artist must lie to tell a better truth - A painting is the sum of all you have thought or have not - Detach from detail to consider firstly shapes - Never let reality get in the way of a good painting - Paint with intent & purpose - Nature is never wrong, but rarely offers good composition - The majority of artists become minimalists for good reason - Too much detail leaves nothing for the imagination - An artist creates harmony from chaos - Drawing is the ultimate abstraction - The eye and mind are not satisfied with just seeing they enjoy suggestion rather than statement - Colour is the most powerful of the seven elements of design - Great truths can be found in simplicity - Simplicity is the art of perfection and offers the greatest economy of means. It is strategy rather than technique that quickly improves your watercolour painting. Hope this helps others in their thinking as it is in your thinking that will make it so. Best wishes Titus.

Hace un mes aproximadamente conocí tu trabajo acá en TH-cam, en un principio me parecía que tu trabajo era muy planificado para ser watercolor, porque realizas el trabajo en secciones, nunca había conocido un acuarelista trabajar de esa manera. Un día un tramo, otro día otro y así, yo también pinto acuarela, pero por mi personalidad si no la termino desde que comienzo, no dejo de pensar en esta. Pero tú tienes una personalidad muy calmada y creo que eso te da la ventaja de realizar las pinturas como lo haces, un saludo desde chile, felicitaciones, tu trabajo es muy bueno!!!
¿Verdad que si? He pintado toda mi vida pero no ganamos nada andando de prisa. Cada persona es diferente y podemos apreciar nuestro estilo y no tomarnos con tanta seriedad todo el tiempo. I only paint for myself, no one else really sees what I paint. I often look at different styles because I often find something that looks fun to try. Enjoying the process is my only goal, the end result isn’t that important for me.

Such a peaceful video, so well done. I find myself transported to a calm and relaxed place from your videos. The ego. What a setback it is most of the time. I find myself as a somewhat new artist comparing myself with someone else. It’s been a difficult journey to keep myself from doing that. I know it’s not the best thing to do. Alan Watts has some interesting things to say about ego in “The Book”. It’s a bit of a different approach toward ego, but comes back to the surrendering of the self to a universe in which we cannot justify having an ego when we exist in such small scale, both in size and in time. I think you’ve said it best, that style is a result. It’s simply how we see the world, but also can be perhaps a mirror of ourselves. When I see your work, I think I see a reflection of my own style in how I perceive what you create. Even though we can see the subject and the same artistic expression of that subject, your work will never look to me as it does to you. Great video as always!

Amid Hadad is trying to paint like so many other watercolorists like Castagnet, Zbuvich, Peckel just to name a few. They all look the same, your painting style is different than all those artists. Your paintings are bold, exciting and have such a mood, especially the marching band series. They have nothing over you...
Incredible work.
Wonderful to watch your progress in realtime on your paintings. It was through watching you for the first time a few months back that I realised that you can build up multiple layers in a painting without it getting muddy. I love the way you build up the play of light over a surface in this way, ie you paint the colour of an object and then the shadow cast on it, that gives the work a real magical quality. Thankyou for taking the time to make these movies.

Great as usual Titus have enjoyed another of your presentations and work.
I threw a bit of water earlier likewise, I was painting rocks and I tried a new watercolor which I quite liked from Daniel Smith called Sodalite genuine. It was frivolous of me to buy it but I really like it for stone and obviously can change or mix the dark blue into another color. Otherwise my palette stays the same especially since I realized that some of the weird named paints are poison to aquatic life. I am very happy for your success with finding a home for your painting. It is beautiful and I love your layering. I appreciate other artists that do cityscapes in their own way but I always thought to myself what’s the hurry to not layer here? And their techniques are great too but too make a watercolor look like an oil painting at least to me that is a treasure and that is why I take my time plus I am recovering from almost losing my life last year which involves a tremendous amount of therapy including dexterity and cognitive retraining. But it is alright. Take care of yourself and a break too, life moves too fast.😊
Very cool as always. I am intrigued by the salt and the water drops. I get exactly why you put them in but at the same time, I find myself reflecting that I would find it difficult to do so as I don't see it. I am captured by what I see and struggle to find the bravery/ inspiration to stray from it. I guess there is a balance there between reality and artistic license. ANd probably this is exactly what defines the artist... still far to go here but greatful that this video sparked this insight.

Yes, I saw that dark spot too. It’s in the camera. We’ll see if someone can solve that but they will need the camera and I can’t miss it…

I love to watch your watercolour painting process and I can't help comparing the colours you use compared to the colours I use in my watercolours - your colours are very subtle and muted which relates to the subjects, locations and climate that you are painting - everything here in Brisbane is very bright because we have very, very strong sunlight for 9 months of the year (which makes it extremely difficult to paint and sketch en plein air because not only is there very little shade but you are also battling the humidity for at least 7 months of the year) and my colour palette is much brighter... which I love but I also adore subtle muted colours but whenever I try to paint our Brisbane urban scenes with subtle muted colours my paintings are flat and lifeless.
I know you paint in oils and I'd like to know of your commissioned works are they all done in watercolours? If so, is it your choosing or the clients choosing? To frame a watercolour painting in Australia through a picture framer is unbelievably expensive, for eg: to frame a ¼ sheet of watercolour using 2 different coloured matt boards with a nice frame would easily cost $350, which makes trying to sell framed watercolours extremely difficult. I have found an online supplier of frames and matt boards who is very reasonably priced and it's the only way I can frame my watercolours by then doing it myself, this costs around $120 which is vastly cheaper than going through a framer. So my next question to you - is it very expensive to frame watercolours in the Netherlands? Are paintings in the Netherlands generally affordable for middle income families?
Hi, thanks for your message! Most of my work- and commissioned work- is watercolorpaintings. For a commissioned painting I feel which technique will fit the subject and I recommend this to the client.
Framing had got more expensive these days, but not as much as in your country. I use ordinary glass, and recommend artglass as an extra option. The mats I cut myself most of the time and then a frame in average size takes me less than 100 dollar

Titus, many of your comments in your videos, like “You know how to be really honest to your way of experiencing your world…” seem to have implications beyond just the world of the artistic process. Do you ever find your artistic views merging and informing with a broader philosophical perspective of “being”?

Another Titus video! I love to think about how culture may or may not influence an artistic style and choices in an artistic life. For example, I wonder if your comfort level with taking commissions is a reflection of your Dutch culture. (For context: My husband is from Norway. He moved to the states in 1998.) The communal, "socialist" culture runs deep in Northern Europe. This "conversation" you have with clients is not necessarily a threat to your ego, because the concept of "ego" is different in Northern Europe. Anyway, I used too many quotes and these are just some thoughts. Would love to know your take on it. Have a great weekend!

I've worked on smaller pieces but would like to work on larger as I see you do. How do you prepare the large papers so they do not wave or buckle when wetting large areas like the sky? Do you pre wet the back and dry flat or how doyou prepare it?
Hi, I always buy the thickest paper I can find. It stays well flat while I'm painting, doesn't need to be pre-wet and stretched!
Titus can you tell us what brush are you using for those big surfaces ? 😅

As beautiful as a finished painting is, there is a freshness with plein-air sketches, or sketches in general, that cannot be attained in a second try of the same subject and view. - At least thats my guess.
