    Don't make both cars start in the same gear. Unless they've changed the WRX, the gearing in the STi is a little different than the WRX (shift point speeds, etc) So just start the races at different speeds (30, 50, 70, etc) and let the driver pick which gear he wants to start in for best performance (power band).

    • @JohnNguyenVincent
      @JohnNguyenVincent  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The STi owner wanted to go by gears so thats how we did it. It wouldn't matter regardless. The wrx is gonna win no matter what. However, once he gets e85 we will try different gears like you suggested, as well as same gears

      That's similar to saying: well I'm driving a Civic, you're driving a Ferrari, let me get a head start at 80mph, then try to catch up until we hit 100mph... These guys were testing how the cars stack up on similar grounds, not making it fair.

    • @Nonx47
      @Nonx47 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What's next? Let's race our cars 0-60, but you can start at a 20mph roll...
      The point of the video is to be fun, to show that the WRX on ethanol will beat the sti with a stage one tune. It's still interesting because they're very different cars, with very different price points. For speeds in a straight line, and similar handling you can get a car for $27k that can beat a $40k car by just adding a few small mods.

    STI is not meant for drag racing.. WrX FA20 would always win in drag races with taller gears.. STI has has a “close ratio” transmission it’s meant to be use on a track courses
    Even if the STI is fully modded, WRX FA20 will be faster on straights..
    You guys should take it to the track course, if STI driver is skilled you’ll beat this modded WRX with no problem at all..
    No need for car part upgrades.. just driver mod and run the STI in its natural habitat.. track or canyon..
    WRX = city car, average MT drivers
    STI= track/canyon car hardcore MT drivers

      These cars has two different purposes.. one is the “all around” warrior which is the wrx, then one is a hooning beast machine which is the STI
      If you live in SoCal, I recommend getting the STI, because of the countless canyon roads and proximity to track courses.
      If you live elsewhere where track and canyons are too far, it would be best just to buy the WRX.

    The VA WRX really is a good car for the money compared to the STI if you just daily it and do some occasional roll racing like this. But there are way more things to consider when it comes to overall value. The STi can run high ethanol for longer without worrying about HPFP failure and we'll start seeing a lot of FA20's with gummed up intake valves as they start getting decent mileage on them. Also, the brakes, diffs, and tranny on the STI are all way wayyyyy better in the STI. So a little roll race is neat, but all it proves is the obvious... if you put corn in a DI car with a tiny turbo....yeah it spools quick. So it still holds true that if you actually want to heavily modify a car for the track or drag strip, the STI is by far the better platform....but since 90% of people will just do the common bolt ons and only occasionally truly push the car to its limits, the. WRX is arguably better value.

    • @JohnNguyenVincent
      @JohnNguyenVincent  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, the ej25 can chase big power because it's an older platform with a bunch of parts for it. Also, the STi is 10 thousand more so it should have better components.
      With the FA20DIT a good way to have cleaner valves is an AOS/Catch can with EGR deletes

    • @randyjoseph462
      @randyjoseph462 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm running a Crawford AOS along with EGR delete, after 30k miles since the last walnut blast and the installation of those two things, the valves were super clean.

    • @xroyal9023
      @xroyal9023 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The sti is not a better platform for those builds, it can't hold up to power for shit. Legit you need to build the entire engine if you are going to track it, drag race it, or auto-x it at anything over 300 whp, unlike the fa20. The best platform for those things in the 4b11 or 4g63.

    • @Bones12x2
      @Bones12x2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      x Royal Thanks dumbass...nobody said an STI was was a great platform for a drag car compared to other non-Subarus. Did you know the space shuttle is better and orbiting thr planet than an STi? Also, you are wrong. There are tons of STI's making well over 300whp that get abused and are just fine. Once you get over 400, then yeah, its gonna break sooner or later. But some pistons, rods and E85 is really all they need to be reliable over 400. But we weren't even talking about the engine to begin with. The STi drivetrain is pretty damn good. Especially the tranny, there are lots STi's making around 800-1000whp on a stock 6spd. So sure, the EJ or FA in stock form isnt great but they aren't that hard or expensive to build up to the 400-500 range and have tons of fun since the entire rest of the car can handle that all day.

    @defaultdaniel 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Pretty much common sense that a stage 2+ wrx on ethanol will make more power than a stage 1 STI. All stage one grants is slight gains. The real power is at stage 2, which is why most people skip stage one and simply buy the accessport and downpipe at the same time. I did this with my old WRX. The difference between stage 1 and 2 are night and day. The downpipe makes that much of a difference. Not even worth going just stage 1 - you're already voiding your warranty, at least do it right.

    • @JohnNguyenVincent
      @JohnNguyenVincent  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, my buddy is planning to go e85 and we are gonna do another run. This was kind to show of base case~
      stage 2 is adequate gains to beat a stage 2 ej25.

  • @NickDiNunzio

    So a stock sti with a cobb basemap looses to a wrx with fbo/e40 and custom tune. Yes thanks for establishing that

    • @JohnNguyenVincent
      @JohnNguyenVincent  6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      the sti has catback and intake with a tune. You can't call that stock. This is a baseline to see where he is in his power. Once he goes e85 we can reevaluate.
      You are such a smart guy. A race is always going to have a winner and loser. Judging from your videos you out of all people should know that. You have civics racing random cars.

      Without a downpipe that catback isn't giving any power improvement. The DP is your restriction. Other than weight savings catback is just for sound until DP replacement.

    • @Terminator4000
      @Terminator4000 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Josh Triplett yeah i agree an exhaust and intake alone with a tune dont really give much of an increase of power let alone just a catback. It would be great to see both cars on ethanol for the next one 👍

      Twin scroll always loses its subie rumble, same with the hawkeye a uk or us sti will sound different to a jdm import because of the twin scroll an equal length headers which is easily sorted if an when you modify the car ie turbo swap.

    • @k3mikal
      @k3mikal 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bryan R I don't think they do. I hear it's an issue with the new turbo placement. I've searched for a while and have yet found a person who has put an UELH on their 2015+WRX.
      MJ Wild Another thing to consider on the WRX is the better gas mileage and cheaper insurance costs as well.

    • @jayhow997
      @jayhow997 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jason F. You can't with the twin scroll turbo it has to be equal length, if you do a big turbo swap then you can fit uel headers aslong as the swap isn't twin scroll. I agree with the wrx is a better option however I've just done a 6 speed swap on my bug ready to push for bigger power but either way a 400+hp sti is basically the same as a 400+hp wrx.

      I never understood this logic. For one, stis are not hard to drive at all lol. Its an all wheel drive stick shift with an easy clutch and heavy fly wheel, making them actually quite easy to drive, and extremely beginner friendly to somebody who hasn't ever really driven manual before, it is a good beginners manual vehicle to learn on, just like the wrx. Second, the sti isn't really a canyon carver, they are nothing special when it comes to handling. They are far behind the competition now, and there are much better handling cars for cheaper that would perform better in canyons than the sti. Its still all wheel drive so it has no rotation in turns, so I believe on a dry canyon road, the sti and the wrx perform pretty much the same.

      turbobenx i think he is talking about those year models because they have unequal length headers and run a twin scroll setup. The version 8 9 and 10 run twin scroll with unequal length. So yes it is possible but not as beneficial as the equal length setup.

    • @Terminator4000
      @Terminator4000 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      turbobenx yeah the reason is because equal length has more benefits than the UEL so you are correct in saying that no one has made a ready bolt on set of UEL for the fa20. . But it can still be fabricated to suit what you want. And im only emphasing that because you said it cant be done when in fact it can be done. But why would you do that when thats taking a step back? Comes down to personal preference. Personally i like single scrolls as they tend to have more top end power than the twins thats just me

    Correct me if im wrong please but the wrx is still only a 5 speed ?? If so it looks to me that the sti has the close ratio 6speed and is having to change gear while the 5speed is teller ratio and can power through his gear change and then the sti hasn't get enough get up and go to recoup the distance his lost but in saying that stage 2 that ej25 and do the same race and or have a race around an track where it's really down mostly to the driver and some of the car but they seem pretty compatible and the real difference is just them ratios so a track would sort out who's who and not a drag racing track a race track time attack track

      Bro thats a silly comment just saying for 1 it's a ej25 vs fa20 and yea they are from subaru but from completely different era's and what they were chasing back in the day were numbers and race wins and trophy's and bragging rights after mistakingly making a freak rally car that dominated the shit out of the WRC and now they are chasing emissions laws and units sold and units compatible with 99% of people not just a select few like back in the day they need profit to survive now its a totally different time and there for the fa20 is a people pleaser engine that can be used in many different cars and Toyota 86 and BRZ were there test dummies for the engine essentially and yea the engine sucks dick its ok for a while and then it just self distructs so anyway they won't ever be the old subaru they once were because they don't want to be and they would rather sell cars to everyone then just a very small few that are rev heads and sadly that's the road they are going down and if we want to tune the fa platform for big power someone has to come up with a genius idea or mass produce the bilit block and then it might become a ok motor

    The WRX does best from dig since boost comes early. Roll races is for the STI. You need to shift at 5000-5500 RPM in the WRX because it falls on it's face past that, smaller turbo. Shift earlier and faster to get the WRX to catch up but it will never win on a roll race against an STI. And tell your boy to loose that STI wing on his WRX, it doesn't belong there. Put the Rexspeed rear duck bill instead.

    • @JohnNguyenVincent
      @JohnNguyenVincent  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @JohnNguyenVincent
      @JohnNguyenVincent  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      if you both buy them stock for stock and spend money on a turboback exhaust with a tune (same money) the wrx will be faster.
      This is true because the FA20 is a newer engine and responds very well to mods.
      If you are chasing big big power like over 500whp. the STi is where you want to be but i'm talking about $$$

      WRX would always be faster on drag races like this and you will see tons of videos on the net that STI gets beat by the WRX if speed was the competition. 2019 STI would even get more spanked in drag races since they shortened 3rd gear even more.
      There are only two categories that the STI out performs the WRX. That will be the in a track course or canyon roads.. STI will post better times than a WRX.
      It all about the “close ratio” transmission of the STI.

    For some reason I thought the blue one was the WRX. I wonder how much of a difference there is in turbo size. My stock turbo was a VF52 and power fell off around 6k RPM almost immediately. I know the FAs have a slightly larger turbo due to their lower displacement, so they can carry power to redline a lot better, specially on Ethanol which cools down all that hot turbo air. Down side is they make no torque.

    • @FruddyG
      @FruddyG 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      the fa20dit responds very well to bolt ons compare to the ej25. Dollar for dollar you get way more power. You dont need to buy injectors an things.

      "stage 2"/both cars getting a tuned and a turboback exhaust the wrx should win

      lets ignore that though.
      But if you say base for base
      25k vs 35k (msrp)
      some performance mods would be
      Cobb AP + Flex + turboback. $2.5k. Another for the tune lets say 3k. (Rough estimate, second handed parts)
      Cobb AP + Catback ~ 1k~
      so the delta would still be around 8,000 dollars.

      The SI system in the STI is BS marketing.. They should take that out in the next gen.. it’s only throttle sensitivity.. there is no special map for sports and sport#
      S# is too sensitive that it prevents you from doing a proper heel and toe downshift..
      I keep my STI in “I” even when I am driving aggressive.. car has no problems catching up to porches and bmws in the canyon roads
      Just set the DCCD on “auto -“ on the canyon road and you will be smiling all the time chasing down high end euro cars.

      My 2018 STI would reach full boost regardless if it is on “I” “S” and “S#”. The current STI VA platform SI is mainly throttle input sensitivity, nothing more to it. Boost target remains the same. (At least for my car that is what I see)
      The real functional SI system that Subaru has are in the CVT FXT or WRX.. My wife owns a CVT FXT FA20 and that thing changes gear ratio when set to sport #.

      EJ engine is old, but very capable.. The real problem with the STI is the drivers that drive it..
      As I had said over and over again the “close ratio gearbox” requires skills to drive..
      You pair that with the FA20 motor, WRX will also drive like shit to hands of an average MT drivers..
      “Close ratio transmission” does not work well with average MT drivers end result car will be slow and laggy, that you will have the urge to mod the shit out of it and then you end up breaking your engine. “Close ratio transmission” is bad on MPGs and wears engine more if you are just average my MT driver.. To the skillful MT driver it is all nothing but greatness!
      No skill on rev matching, heel and toe and LFB. Not knowing how the car respond in every RPM at every single gear. STI or basically the “close ratio transmission” is not for you.

    Still got that wing on your rex?! Man just admit defeat, admit you should have just paid the extra 8 or 9 gs and got an sti, bottom line remove the wing, your pissing off us real enthusiasts

      Chris Newby does it also piss you off that hes faster than an sti? Is that why you are mad? Does it make you mad knowing that you over spent on an sti to only have it get surpassed by a wrx with an sti wing on it? Im trying to understand your side because to me its just a wing, and it creates downforce and if a car like an sti needs it to handle better, then wouldnt you think that a car that is faster than an sti would need the downforce more? Unless what you are implying is that if the wrx doesnt need a big wing so neither should the sti. That makes more sense, take off youre big wings from factory. Yea, you dont need all that downforce lmao.

      Bryan R your a fucking idiot, the spoiler is mostly cosmetic, his car doesn’t go nearly fast enough to create this downforce your talking about, it’s not a super car that actually benefits from a spoiler, go educate yourself a bit and get back to me. Ps I took the wing off my Hawkeye cuz it looks way better, spoiler is a gimmick for boy racers

Both cars are great.. it’s crazy how y’all subaru owners war over silly things.. y’all act like a wing is a status symbol.. if u dont like it then keep that as your opinion on something.. he put it on his car cause he obviously likes the look.. no need to say the Gus not a real enthusiast lol c’mon man.. btw your hawk eye my fav sti nice car 🙌🏾
