I wanna say how much I appreciate James being honest about being gun shy after a crash and then getting some help with it. Right when I was asking myself… “why isn’t James driving?” You could easily have ignored it but it’s great to share that. Can happen to the best of us ❤ glad James got back on the track 😊

I just would like to mention: I knew someone who owned a `08 wrx. I drove it.... loved it! But these are high maintenance machines, if you CHOOSE to drive them hard.
My dad used to race. Every season, he pulled the engine, overhauled it then put it back together, reinstall engine, win races. He went through many engines. He rebuilt them until they were scrap.
There is never going to be a truly happy marriage between a commuter and a race car. Only the determination of the driver.
this generation of wrx are just bad cars. Might even be the most notoriously unreliable jdm "sports" cars to date. Most bmw models have a better track record than this

@@Calypsom52 I'm not saying you can't replace and add supporting modifications to half the parts in the car or get lucky and get a solid car. But Subarus are notoriously unreliable for making power. I also am not under the impression that they last particularly long as used cars without extensive maintenance.

Felt like this season of HiLow went by really quick! We need longer episodes, and more shots on installation of parts so the series feels more personal and casual like the first and second HiLow
Edit: Credit where due, they did their best to deliver after blowing their budget, rebuilding engines and Hi-Car, as well as filming the MrBeast collab content at the same time. I guess what we're trying to say is that we all appreciate the hard work and effort for pulling this off and we look forward to the next HiLow!

This series probably spent far more money on the "upgrades" than the others, but in the end the hi/low part seemed to become secondary.
Yea, I definitely agree but I understand it because of how many issues they had with the engines and I'm sure it was expensive. However I do with they would stop being so worried of showing upgrades that we've seen before like turbos and stuff like that as a different car is enough variety imo.

For the next season of HiLow, I would suggest modding cars that were never meant for performance, into performance cars. (e.g. Toyota Corolla)

Yeah, the stock WRX 5-speed transmission is good for about 350-380Hp. It was inevitable. The STI 6-speed transmission on the other hand, is good for about 500-520 Hp.
I have a 2002 Bugeye WRX. Absolutely love it and it is the 2.0L variant, not the 2.5L, so I don't have to fear for blown head gasket even with 300Hp. Stock internals, except for the baffled oil tray, stronger oil pick-up (stock is trash brazed one, mine is welded with additional support arm) and bigger oil pump. No problems even after 10000 miles of daily driving. Constant oil and water checks and oil change at 6k miles, next is at 12k miles.
I'm buying a 2003 blob eye wrx think it's the 2.0 version off a friend in a few weeks for £15,000 but I'm unsure exactly what's been done to it. as he's a bit of a bullshiter. He told me in the past that it's 500bhp but I'm pretty sure that wrx can't really get to that bhp but sti can. I don't know too much about cars but I do really want it as it looks sick and got the wide body kit.. things I know about it is that it's got 36,000 miles as he had a new engine a few years back an it's got 3 gauges on front dash including the oil pressure. And a boost gauge on the front pillar.. it's ridiculously loud and pops n bangs really well which I love. I googled common faults an seems like it might be a good idea to get it compression tested to make sure the cylinders are ok. Would you say that's the main thing worth checking before buying? I know he's spent load's of money on it but want to know that the engine is good before I commit.

didnt the clutch give up on the high car at the beginning.. crazy my 04 had the original clutch at 115k with all the mods i had and 0 issues ever lol.. then again I never launched the car once ever

@@KrGsMrNKusinagi0 I had a '07 Wrx and the 3rd gear blew as well, I had a upgraded clutch, so the clutch is like a fuse for the gearbox

The biggest thing people should take from this is, don't buy a beat up used Subaru unless you want to fix everything on it.

I'll admit, low car performs way better than I thought it would have.
Also, engine health can play a role in the starting power figures and reliability so other people's mileage may vary!
This series is amazing. I would consider moving to another bigger platform with huge Hi-Low differences like Mustangs. Mustangs and civics are like the two biggest aftermarket communities for these types of things. Seems to me like a lot less headache for your troubles too.
I would say mustang's of the 1999-2004 generation. You can beat the crap out of them and they keep coming back for more. Turbo, supercharger, or nitrous you cant go wrong.
The range between hi and low is huge too, so you can really show the contrast.

I’m not a Mustang fan myself, but I’d love to see them do a long series with something like the Mustang, I want to see them do Hi & Low with something American Muscle for sure since they have done Toyota, Nissan and Subaru. Something American or even European would be neat to see

I was almost reeled into a 1999 WRX wagon but knowing how many issues Subies can have and the 100k mile rebuild stuff I saw online, I fell out of love with it a couple years ago.
Almost feels like I dodged a major bullet with this series 😅
The trouble is, the Boxer engines are challenging. The intervals for the timing belt, spark plugs and oil changes have to be retained, otherwise failure is certain, as everybody saw.
I sure hope so. Then the people that know how to maintain these things right can scoop some deals.
I really hope this doesn't kill the HiLow franchise for the future. I love this series and I'll be sad if it dies like a 6th Subie engine.

Yes!! Maybe some kind of road trip to Las Vegas. They can all play some game to decide who gets to pick first between all the cars they have, all the way down to the last person getting whatever is left unpicked. Unless they’ve sold the cars after making videos about them, they’ll have Hi 350z, Low 350z, Hi Tacoma, Low Tacoma, Hi WRX, Low WRX, BMW e36 (manual swap with gutted interior), the Mazda Miata, the little VW convertible, the 500$ Civic, and a few more I’m probably forgetting. Also I’m sure as long as they aren’t doing anything too insane on the journey, they could probably borrow cars from plenty of people willingly as long as they don’t break it.

I like evos, but if we want the series to continue they need more reliable cars than the WRX or Evo. It's already hard enough to build a reliable evo for the street, I don't even want to think how bad a track build would be. Honestly I think an "oddball" car like an SC400 would be really cool to see, especially if they did manual conversions.

I’m still thinking you guys should do a money pit series on an old school Honda. You can use the EG hatch that Nolan got for $500. That way you can take your time building up a really nice setup. The cherry on top would be that you don’t need to worry about blowing the engine.

@xexecuterxx turbo vitara build is sub$1000 and the d16 would make some serious hps, also a B swap in an EG chasis specifically is really easy so it would be viable if Nolan did single camD and James did Dual cam B

would be an interesting addition to the Hi vs Low series, perhaps having a pre purchase inspection to be part of the show.
Not only could it limit some lemons from getting through (requiring engine swaps etc, as in this case), but it would also show the value in pre purchase inspections in general. All the way from top tier comprehensive inspections (where they check literally everything) down to cheap and basic inspections. This would not also show the benefits of having even just a basic pre purchase inspection, as well as the lengths they go to in the more expensive and comprehensive inspections.
Those exact comprehensive, yet expensive, inspections saved me from buying lemons on two occasions (R34 GTST and ironically, a WRX), both of which had basic inspections and passed with flying colors, where the more expensive services quickly found that in both instances, the vehicles had been in major accidents (R34 had a huge rear end collision, WRX must have been T-boned), however the shops that did the repairs the cars must have been very good, as any visible damage was cleverly hidden in a way that would fool just about anyone.
They only started suspected something was off when their fancy laser measuring blah blah system picked up slight chassis twisting in both cases (the suspension, arms, toe, camber etc had all been realigned, effectively hiding the damage), to confirm their suspicions they then had a way of testing for weaknesses in the steel body work (don't ask me how) that showed stress points in the exact places you would expect given the accidents they were involved in.
In the end I found a great bug-eye WRX that I got for a steal, the thing ran flawlessly for 6 years, only had about 450 at the wheels but she was a fun and reliable sleeper.

The editing on this one was so great! I also loved the in depth summary and numbers, I was missing that from the earlier episodes but it was worth having it all together at the end!
This series was super satisfying. Welcome to the pain of building a road course car, truth is sticky tires and good grip are somewhat your enemy when it comes to survivability but they're so much fun. I usually tell folks to target reliability upgrades and instruction before they go for performance upgrades but I think you gave folks a pretty fair perspective on the path a lot of folks take!
Honestly I really want to see a low vs medium vs high tier series. I think there's so many things that a middle tier would really prove perfect in. That'd *truly* tell you what's worth spending the extra money on.

The moment I found out hi-low was gonna be Subarus, I knew there’d be a lot of engine replacement happening, and this is coming from a former Subaru owner who intends on getting another one some day.
Same, I just got rid of my Subaru right before it was going to cost me a fortune in repairs. I'd get another one but I need to convince my wife that the kids don't need any food so I can keep it running.

I just dont get how people blow engines. I have a 14" FXT, I touge the Sh... Out of it, 150k miles not even the CVT has failed, not even a HG...
@@514aam Former 06 wrx and 11 legacy owner with some notes. 1. CVT will fail around 175k every owner I know has had this happen. 2. They stil havent done an AOS or baffled oil pan and wonder why things are going wrong.

I'm not sure if Donut has plans for a HiLow season 4, but I think finding two matching rwd cars for turning into weekend drift car that you can still drive on the street. I think two 2000s 4.6l Mustangs or a pair of 98' or 99' LS400s would be awesome to see. I also think a drag car HiLow season would be fun to watch.

Yes the overall performance initially won't be much, but the reliability of good parts over time is what is key. Being able to run the exact same time lap after lap in 100+ degree weather is a plus. I love this comparison and glad you guys do this. Definitely like how you show what matters and what you can go cheap on and it will never really matter. This definitely helps with my car upgrades. Thanks! Oh and I learned not to buy a 2007 subaru wrx. Ever.

@MJ Bosonian it had nothing to do with the parts they added, the engine's are just crappy. Don't buy a subaru in those years, they were known for having problems.
Honestly, even with all the troubles this turned out to be a remarkable series and has demonstrated to every viewer the very real and harsh reality of what working on cars is like sometimes. The fact that you guys showed and discussed everything along the way is super cool, as well as the fact that the team went above and beyond throughout the series in many ways - a testament to the passion and work ethic of the people that make Donut so great. The cinematography really took a step up throughout this season, too!
Minus the fact that there was a major lack of research done for these cars. Asking the Subie community for a bit of input would've helped immensely. Yes, "Cars are pain". I can fully endorse this saying. However, taking the time to find what expensive/cheap parts are recommended for this platform would have been even more helpful, rather than just looking at the dollar amounts.
Cant wait for Donut to financially recover so we can get a next series 😄♥

@Le Floch Sometimes, but holding on tight is the reason I'm still around. Mind you, that was in an 84 Toyota pickup with a bench seat and only *mostly* functional seat belts in a roll-over. In a modern car with airbags and bucket seats, you're probably better off staying loose, less muscle and tissue damage too

I feel like all comments of "This series was short" don't realize they just enjoy it and want more. This has been ongoing for weeks.
Also I think this season was weekly where the others were every other week.
If this was a normal person's build I'm 100% both cars would have gotten scrapped by now

@@anusername8350 Normal people 100% have money for a built motor. Replacing from a brand new OEM block will cost you $6-7k. A built block only cost another $2k typically. Why wouldnt a normal person save the extra $2k to go built?
Loved the series, i always wanted a subaru wrx hawkeye since i was in highschool. This video even though it had its downfalls on the engine side, car is still beautiful and from what everyone mentioned fun to drive. One day i will have one. But will also need to have a 🐖 bank to put in for all the repairs that it may need lol!! Thank you Donut!!! Video was great! Like the reputation for Subarus is kinda ruined just cause they didn't inform themselves that well. The guys from Driven Media did a way better job imo.

@@Eduardo_Espinoza They took it to one to have the engines rebuilt after already destroying them. They did not consult a Subaru specialist prior to beginning this series however. So a lot of stuff could have been prevented, i.e. the first engine breaking because they did not break it in.

I really hope this didn't deter you guys from having another Hi-Low season next year, as this is easily some of my most favorite content from you guys at Donut! I think it would be rad if you guys bought a pair of BRZs/86s for the next Hi-Low.

@@xjeanxflipx I respect why you said that. However, keep in mind that the BRZ/86 contains a NA Subaru motor, rather than the turbo motor. So, it is much more likely to not give them the same issues we saw this season.
Just because they record themselves doing modifications doesnt mean they know what they're doing. All of this was a tax write off so the expense aspect was really overblown.

@@WolfiiHD Lmao, you aren't wrong, the BRZ/86 is slow af, but you are forgetting they handle way better than the average car having near 50/50 weight distribution. But that aside, lets face the fact that most viewers of this show don't have the resources to build super fast racecars like everyone wants. I think the BRZ/86 would be way more relatable of a build platform to the common viewer, and has absolutely tons of parts availability.
I love how they turned the ridealong of the track into the sponsored segment, even if it's sponsored time you should always deliver value to the viewer!
This series is so GOOOD absolutely love it, sucks you guys blew up so many motors lmao but dang subies are scary to own.

Wow, what a great video! I really enjoyed seeing the difference between the two builds and how they performed on the track. I was really impressed by the $21,000 build and how it was able to hold its own against the more expensive build. It just goes to show that you don't always have to spend a ton of money to get a fast and reliable car. I also appreciated the attention to detail and the clear explanations of each modification. Great job on the video, I'll definitely be checking out more of your content in the future!

Would've loved to see an estimate on the cost of things like engine/trans replacements and LABOR. The parts might've been $21k/$43k, but odds are labor doubled the cost- if not even more.
Itd be nice to see, but not really comparable. Majority of people can buy the exact part at the same price, but some people can install everything themselves, have a mechanic buddy, or if at a shop, labor prices can fluctuate just by going down the street
@stargayzer5446 how do you figure? I have a subaru engine. My car is 22 years old. It makes more power than either wrx in the video and hasn't been blown or rebuilt once. 170k kms. Donut ran subarus name through mud for views. If they'd built the cars right there wouldn't be any issues.

I would love to see an Up to Speed or B2B on the Subaru Tribeca SUV. It's interesting because the weight of the car is ridiculous, it has an H6 engine that has a weird design history, and it flopped because of its grille. I have a 2009 Tribeca Limited and it's been great. I spent 3 years living "van life" in this SUV all over the US of A and was easily able to fit a twin size 8" memory foam mattress in it without taking the rear seats out and still had space for the things that van life requires. I love this car and it's history and commercial failure is a good story. Love what you guys do! And yes, I vape Jewel Mint flavor 😂.

NA miatas with good wheels, tires, brakes, coilovers and chassis reinforcement would absolutely wreck these things on track without even touching the engine.

They're awesome cars man, I would recommend them. They are not this unreliable. This is what happens when you don't research anything and just bolt random shit on and hope for the best. A lot of motors are the same in that regard.
