The color ones that he, Number One and Spock wore in Discovery S2 are better looking than the ones on the SNW series that look effite on the men, just as the Discovery crew uniforms did.
The uniforms from 'the Cage' and 'Where No Man Has Gone Before' actually began the three color department divisions, but the sandy beige worn by Mitchell, Scott, Kelso, and the ginger yeoman didn't t pop, and looked too similar to the greenish-gold worn by Pike, #1, Kirk, and Spock.
Also the symbol department didn’t match.Gary Mitchell wore Biege which was engineer/security department. Instead of the block hook symbol he has the science symbol.
The constant changing of the uniforms between the different iterations has always seemed a bit jarring, although I have to admit that the US Army is exhibiting the same instability in uniform design. The one detail I have always found the most annoying is the switch of the "command" and "engineering" branch colors between TOS and TNG. As a former Army engineer, I'm here to say that TOS got it right and TNG got it wrong ... Red is the proper color for the Engineering branch. Gold is fine for Command.
They switched because Picard and Riker wouldn't look that good in yellow, they wouldn't pop. I PERSONALLY prefer the switch, in all but security. The aggressive red works better in my humble opinion
For functionality (1st place) I would go 100% with the Star Trek: Enterprise one piece jump suit (I wore something similar in the 80's as an AFV driver in the Canadian Army), lots of pockets to store stuff in. For design alone (2nd place) I would go with the monster maroons as they have a classy look, and for sentimental reasons my third place pick would be the TOS era uniforms.
@@StarWarsExpandedUniverse Thanks for the feedback. Everyone has their own favourites for their own reasons and although I don't agree with them all, I still respect their opinions and reasons.
Agree. I LOVE the retro look of Enterprise's uniforms. The one piece jump suit Reminds me of NASA and 20th-21st Century military flight suits. Also they look like the most FUNCTIONAL uniforms in the Star Trek series overall.
I like the Enterprise uniforms the best too. They look very functional. I'd maybe make the division color stripes bigger or even put the solid color (like gold for command), across the shoulders like TNG or maybe a big armband on one sleeve, to try and make it stick out better.
Enterprise's utilitarian style appeals to me as I always appreciated wearing my utility uniforms when I served in the military. Comfortable, lots of pockets, and again, as you noted, could be worn in different venues. However, for me, the uniforms from ST: WOK and beyond (original TOS cast) are visually the best, though feel more like a dress uniform and not comfortable at all.
Strange New Worlds the actual series has the V necks which I think are an improvement over those weird black collars. It's a slight difference from the crossover with Disco, which had other differences such as the bridge getting more colors and Pike getting taller hair. Speaking of Disco, I hear those Disco 32nd century uniforms were changed from the grey for S4 because once our heroes were wearing them on their ship, everyone was blending into the walls!
Yeah I realized the SNW uniform era later… Pike’s taller was an improvement… and that’s interesting, didn’t know that’s why they changed those. They were pretty bleh anyways lol

That inconsistency was a mistake that was partially caused by the fairly large number of writers and directors that worked on TOS. The uniforms and Federation logos were supposed to have been the same on all Starfleet vessels.
I would have ranked TWOK a bit higher. I also thought that those uniforms looked like dress uniforms for daily service. Not as formal like an Admiral retiring banquet uniform but more dress than the daily work uniforms of TOS.
I would have the Maroon, TOS, and early Picard (I refer to it as the Picard Flashback uniform) higher. I can see why you have TMP as the worst. I've heard a lot people complaining about it. I personally like the shoulder straps on it though, and yes Kirks Admiral variant is great. So my top ones are the later TNG, TOS, Voyager/DS9, Picard Flashback, and the Maroon. I would have Lower decks and Strange New Words. But with all those others I can't think as to their places. There are more uniforms than I knew. I also really like the alternate future ones that you see in Voyager Endgame and TNG All Good things. Heralding back to the TOS feel while staying in tough with that era of Trek. I would love to hear your top picks on other Science Fiction uniforms as well.
Star Trek II-VI uniforms are my favorite reminding me of real life Victorian era naval uniforms and the asymmetrical flap is amazing to me. I’ve always wondered what those jackets were called
I can't believe how high the season 1 discovery uniforms are. I hate those, they look so tacky to me. I csnt stand the blue and gold mixture, and the look uncomfortable. Of course to each their own. Great video, thanks for sharing.
Hard to have a ranking because I think most Star Trek uniforms are pretty fun, and if I had a cosplayer nearby and an unlimited budget to pay them for custom costumes, I'd own one of each of these in my closet. I think I'd even own some pajamas that look like TMP uniforms. ;) Since you ranked Lower Decks so high, I bet you liked seeing those in live action just a few weeks ago. I know I did.
Yeah the Lower Decks uniforms in live action were spectacular! And yeah I’m sure all of us would love to have all the uniforms if we had infinite money.
The Star Trek: Enterprise uniforms are by far my favorite. And I don't see any upcoming shows or episodes beating them. I think I'd rank most of the uniforms in pretty much the same spots.
I heard that when they started Star Trek 2, they took those uniforms and tossed them into the trash. And did a total redesign for each next movie. Such complaints need to be submitted to the production company or to Paramount.
the one thing i don't like sbout stranger things new worlds uniforms is the collar and the shoulder patterning plus they seem a tad stiff in the shoulder area.
Love your opinions in your video. The “War Time” uniforms were introduced in TNG movie first contact. And I will say this till the day I die. The top color block jumpsuits were made for Station/outpost functions only not Starship occasions. Voyager should not have those but something else designed by the production for something exclusive. However for Star Trek:Generations. The dud design this color block combination outfit that is now seen by Lower Decks, Prodigy, and Picard Season 2-3. You can google Star Trek Generations action figure and see what I mean. The Enterprise is a brilliant design and it would actually exist if NASA had warp drive capabilities. For one last and dreadful final episode. The uniforms got an additional patch on the right arm, shoulder straps and NAME patches. Sad Enterprise didn’t last another 4 -5 seasons. Anyway good work and you missed out late 24th century jumpsuit(Picard season 1), mid 25th century uniforms and the SNW uniforms.
The #17 uniforms were the WORST! (Except for the Admiral's uniform.) Along with the Next Gen miniskirts for men (OMG). The #15 uniform was pretty lame too, but forgivable as the show was new and experimental at the time. They gave way to the #6 TOS uniform, which I grew up with and love. They would be my choice for the #1 uniform! The #13 uniform is one of my favorites, especially because of the pinstripe on the top. I think it looks classy and stylish. The #11 TMP uniforms never appealed to me, mainly because they changed the traditional gold-blue-red colors to a standard red, and the insignias never made any sense. The #8 uniform is nice in that it reminds me of the Enterprise uniforms, and I like the gold-silver-copper trim colors.
Thanks for the detailed comment! It seems our ranking line up a little bit. Oh man you reminded me of those Next Gen Miniskirts with those uniforms. Those were pretty rough! Yikes! Thanks for watching!
I get it on the grey Discovery uniforms…but let’s not pretend the main cast was wearing this for more than a few moments of the last episode of the season. Sure the rest of Starfleet wore them, but in fairness it was significantly reduced due to the whole Burn situation 😅 Fair is fair.
Whenever someone publishes a "ranking" of anything on TH-cam I know I'm gonna be in the comments telling the poster how wrong they are :) Not this time: can't disagree with anything here, PARTICULARLY your choice for #1.
I so disagree with you. BUT. I LOVE that you did this video. Just because I disagree with you does not mean you are wrong. Just don't match my opinion. That is okay!!! I have thought of doing my own ranking video too. :) I may still do that. :) Thank you for being inspirational.
#18 - all I can say for that is it transitions from the Classic 1966 Star Trek uniform to the Motion Picture dull grey uniform. Both ugly, but the stripe of colour sort of links the two. That's all I can think of for it.
I'm not disagreeing with your thoughts on the 3100s uniforms but they are the furthest from us into the future. Fashion would drastically change. I wouldn't be surprised if someone from the 1000s would be repulsed by today's clothing and style. Hell someone from the 1890s would probably think the same.
I remember also really loving the NASA style Enterprise uniforms when I first saw them but I feel like I associate them too much with the nonsense that show kept doing.
Soooo.... you made a rank list for Star Trek uniforms based on your preference for lack of division colors.... a STAR TREK uniforms list... where Enterprise is first over TNG S3+..... "That's a bold strategy there, Cotton!" What's next, a starship list based on your dislike of warp nacelles?
I typically don't like nutrek, but I think you did a good job judging only the uniforms, and comparing them equally. Enterprise, despite it's controversy, is my favourite Star Trek (maybe sharing 1st place with DS9); so I was EXTREMELY happy when I saw ENT's overlooked and under-appreciated uniforms on the top of this list!
Haha yeah I feel the same way as you in regards to NuTrek. I LOVE Enterprise too. It’s an AMAZING show! DS9 and TNG are like sharing me number 1 spot, but Enterprise is right there! I love it! Archer’s the best. And those uniforms are amazing! Thanks for the comment!
Dude...the fact that you put those purple abominations above TOS film red jackets invalidates your opinion. Like, seriously? But other than your absurdly high purple abominations rank, and absurdly low TOS film rank, I get what you're about.
number 18ntheir not so bad but they are hardly the best, the boots though are serously ugly that blue grey looks so eek. the motion picture uniforms are kind of funny really very 1970s.
Yeah those Motion Picture Uniforms are very tethered to the time they were created in. I agree that the blue grey on the boots is eek, good way to put it!
Just sounding off to stan for Lower Decks. That show knows what Star Trek is and has a ton of heart. Prodigy's pretty good too. Otherwise, I agree. Discovery is cancer and Picard season one and particularly two were brain aneurysms. SNW is trying, but I can only accept it as a parallel universe.
I cannot disagree with the placements on this list more. But I do respect it's his opinion and his video.

The DS9 undershirt is grey
Yes.
I heard that when they started Star Trek 2, they took those uniforms and tossed them into the trash. And did a total redesign for each next movie. Such complaints need to be submitted to the production company or to Paramount.
That was definitely a good decision on their part!
the one thing i don't like sbout stranger things new worlds uniforms is the collar and the shoulder patterning plus they seem a tad stiff in the shoulder area.
Yeah same agreed!
I think your number one is perfect.
Thanks so much, glad you agreed!
Gotta rank combadges and rank insignia next
Great idea!
You left out the uniforms seen in TNG "All Good Things" and Voyager "Endgame"
So I did. If I were to rank them they’d probably be around 13 or 12.
The red uniforms from 2-6 are peak Trek uniforms.
@@joemcascio they’re definitely solid!
Hey thanks so much for watching and typing out your perspectives really enjoyed this comment!
Personally I like the The Monster Maroon uniform the best
Nice!
I absoluty agree with the majority of your rankings but sadly you forgot about the uniforms from the last episodes from tng and voyager
Yeah man, sorry about that I realized after the fact that I forgot those and Strange New Worlds uniforms.
those are an alternate future apparently, the same time period as Picard. I don't know if we ever get them in the same continuity.
Your number 1 pick is mine too
Haha awesome! Nice pick!
14:07 #7 Rick And Morty
Yeah lol
Sure the rest of Starfleet wore them, but in fairness it was significantly reduced due to the whole Burn situation 😅
Fair is fair.
Yeah you’re right! Luckily it wasn’t featured much!
Whenever someone publishes a "ranking" of anything on TH-cam I know I'm gonna be in the comments telling the poster how wrong they are :)
Not this time: can't disagree with anything here, PARTICULARLY your choice for #1.
Hey this is an awesome comment! Great minds think alike! Thanks for watching!
I so disagree with you. BUT. I LOVE that you did this video. Just because I disagree with you does not mean you are wrong. Just don't match my opinion. That is okay!!! I have thought of doing my own ranking video too. :) I may still do that. :) Thank you for being inspirational.
Hey that’s awesome. A difference of opinion is what makes the world interesting. Glad that you were inspired! I look forward to seeing your list!
the skant is the best tng unform by far, they should have had riker wear one.
Oh yeah for sure!
#18 - all I can say for that is it transitions from the Classic 1966 Star Trek uniform to the Motion Picture dull grey uniform. Both ugly, but the stripe of colour sort of links the two. That's all I can think of for it.
Oh yeah maybe I can see that. True.
Yeah man, you're completely right.
I remember also really loving the NASA style Enterprise uniforms when I first saw them but I feel like I associate them too much with the nonsense that show kept doing.
Yeah they’re quite cool
The first contact and wrath on khan uniforms are the best the worst are enterprise for me
Oh wow interesting! Thanks for sharing your favorite and least favorite uniforms! Quite the opposite of my ranking! Nice list!
I agree that those two are my favourite Star Trek uniforms, but the Enterprise ones are high on the list for me as well.
I actually like Discovery season 4 uniforms and you forgot SNW uniforms.
Hey that’s awesome! I’m glad there’s some fans of those uniforms! And yeah, I forgot about SNW when I made this video.
Real life military member here. Those aren’t called “shoulder straps.” They are shoulder boards. But yeah they look awful.
@@jamesbeyer Thank you so much for your service, sir. And thank you for the information.
What? 11? But... WHAT? 11 should be 1 -- well, higher, at least!
11 is cool for sure!
My personal unanimous favorite uniform is the gray uniform on Star Trek Voyager worn by Seven of Nine😍
Haha I know that’s a favorite of many lol
Soooo.... you made a rank list for Star Trek uniforms based on your preference for lack of division colors.... a STAR TREK uniforms list... where Enterprise is first over TNG S3+..... "That's a bold strategy there, Cotton!" What's next, a starship list based on your dislike of warp nacelles?
🤣🤣🤣 Lol this is so valid.
tos for the win, nothing comes close.
TOS still remains incredibly solid all these years later.
for me ENT uniform would be 17th place.
Hey man, fair enough! They’re not everyone’s taste for sure!
You lost me with the #1 pick 😐
😂 Totally understandable! The Enterprise uniforms aren’t for everyone!
Plus those discovery season 3 uniforms are just a muted rip off of the Babylon 5 uniform
Dude...the fact that you put those purple abominations above TOS film red jackets invalidates your opinion. Like, seriously? But other than your absurdly high purple abominations rank, and absurdly low TOS film rank, I get what you're about.
Yeah you’re right. I agree. Disco forms should be below TOS TMP films.
number 18ntheir not so bad but they are hardly the best, the boots though are serously ugly that blue grey looks so eek.
the motion picture uniforms are kind of funny really very 1970s.
Yeah those Motion Picture Uniforms are very tethered to the time they were created in. I agree that the blue grey on the boots is eek, good way to put it!
How dare you rank wrath of khan uniform so low...horrible
Lol apologies
wrong on all counts, glad you werent in charge
Hey man, thanks for the comment! I see we disagree! How would you rank them?
With the exception of the third season of Star Trek Picard, new Trek is terrible.
Picard season 3 sucked and is barely better than season Picard season 1, much less any other new Trek show
Comment irrelevant to the video. Please delete
@@SmartSmearss3 was fantastic, you are wrong . Save your negativity for your family.
The uniforms worn on the USS Kelvin existed before the timeline diverged so they should’ve been included
