Apparently why this film has not even been realised even on blue ray as the new effects were done in SD for some reason it can’t be upscaled like the rest of the film
@@Akkbar21 I did the plex thing a few years back. Worked ok for some things but got annoyed with buffering and whatnot and ended up losing interest. Still a good suggestion and you've put it back on my mind. Would like to find something legit for ripping because the process I used to use was pretty painful. Thanks!
Definitely 2, 3, and 4 are a great trilogy with the characters being true to the original TV series. But The Motion Picture is very underrated and a great experience in its own right. It’s like combining Star Trek with 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Good to hear that the movies look good on 4K! I think I'm going to hold off on buying this set for now, though, until the price drops and/or we find out more about what they are going to do with the rest of the films. Plus, I re-watched TOS and then TNG (including the movies) which I just recently finished, so I think it's gonna be a little while until I'm ready to start back over and re-watch again lol
Is anyone else experiencing delays with 4K Pre-Orders from Amazon? I’ve had awful luck getting my 4K pre-orders. I’m waiting on “The Thing” still and now this Star Trek collection.
I'd love it if the major studio releases were as good as the specialty labels for including the original stereo audio tracks. Surround is okay, but for me nothing beats a good full range two-channel mix.
You suckered me into getting it at best buy. The had 1 left at my store and I snagged it. Will check it out soon. Yet another release of my weekly haul lol.

It's odd they didn't do all six films. I can understanding holding off for the Generations ones, but why not just do 5 and 6? Oh well. They should've done Atmos, yeah, but the fact the picture is FINALLY remastered is so relieving.
I haven't purchased the set yet. Will be soon but I have the digital copies on Apple TV. The Directors Cut of Star Trek 2 is included in the extras but I'm pretty sure it is only the blu ray version not $K. Apple does offer the Directors cut in 4K as a separate purchase. Curious as to weather the Disc set copy is in 4K??

2, 3, and 4 is essentially a Trilogy and Pt 1 was just a revival because before that it was like 20 or 30 yrs after the og series was cancelled so for its time, it was a huge deal, especially seeing the Enterprise on a Big Screen in its full glory for the first time was amazing.
It was 10 years since the original series left the air in 1969. “The Motion Picture” was released in 1979. Also, NBC released “The Animated Series” in 1973 and 1974. It reunited practically the entire original cast and repurposed unused scripts from the original series; and is highly thought of among fans. So there was really only a 5 year gap in the Star Trek franchise.
I watched ST 2 and S T 3 this week and will watch S T 4 tonite. I skipped ST TMP for now as i re-watched it last year on (1080p) Bluray (yeah, ive been triple-dipping with this UHD set: DVD;BD;UHD-4k) . Will watch the 4k of ST-TMP later on. I think ST 2 TWOK is the best one moviewise, though indeed st3 seemed a tad better audio and 4k-visuals wise. Still, all are a very enjoyable re-watch on 4k.
I will be picking this set up but will probably put the disc in the Zavi/UK blu ray steelbooks I own, which probably will upset other collectors as I have had people get upset when I put a better release in a better case I already owned from an earlier release
These older films were made 2.0 stereo or even mono… so making 3D audio is not easy task and not even represent the original movie! While the picture at 4K is closer to the original source! Not as good as original 35mm but better that older HD releases! In reality it is ok to leave the original soundtrack as long as the original film did not have better than that!
It’s somewhat disappointing, but for these older movies object based audio would have been very difficult to extract from the original Dolby stereo tracks. The provided 7.1 is more than adequate. The first movie that really should get an Atmos upgrade is Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country. Believe it or not, this was the first movie released theatrically with a Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track! So the information should be there to extract an object based upgrade.
@@haukionkannel, it’s not lost on me that it’s not always ideal-and is often cost-prohibitive-for many 4K releases to have a an object-based surround sound. I totally get not including it for a dialogue-driven drama with very few significant sound effects. But if you’re entering the foray of 4K, and you’re a science fiction property with films that have a fair amount of sound effects, music, etc that could benefit, it just seems like a missed opportunity to me. I know the results aren’t always super impressive with older films and sound elements, but I wish they’d try. Again, I know it’s cost-prohibitive, but in a perfect world, they could include multiple audio options, including the original audio presentation (for the purists), a 5.1 or 7.1, and a Dolby Atmos track. Giving us options would of course be the best scenario.
There are stereo sound movies… these will newer get Dolby atmos unles theynremake the whole audiotrack completely. I am really surpriced to see even 5.1 with this. And if you own Blu-ray you know that 5.1 is basically stereo, with some effects put on the back and not many of those. Dolby atmos with stereo sound does not make it better…
Although black levels are good, Star Trek IV has a very, very soft picture. I don't think it's the fault of the transfer; I think it was just filmed this way. The grain is rendered well, and that's a good thing because the film is grainy throughout.
Ha I kinda liked the first one. Looking forward to watching all of them in all their 4K glory. I also kinda like the box artwork lol. Don’t like the plastic cases inside.
It is a tough call. I would love to have this, but will there be an even better release down the road? Who knows?!🙄 I will probably pick this up with a bit of a price break, but right now I have too many other Pre-Orders looming to drop the chunk they want for this. I picked up the box set Tuesday at a Best Buy, over 30 miles away, south and east of me here in South Jersey, having told Amazon to cancel my preordered copy. They had no idea when they'd have it to ship. I've only so far watched the first and second, but it annoys me a little that the films audio-wise seem too front heavy. My Atmos overheads are dead silent, as expected, but very little ever happens behind me on the side and rear channels, despite it being a Dolby True HD, 7.1 audio track. That's disappointing. There's definitely a visual improvement: the shots of the Enterprise leaving spacedock are cleaner, many of the instances where you once saw dirt and specks on the layered matt shots have been expunged. They used to be distracting, and sadly a reminder of how rushed the film's special effects had been on its initial release.
This is time when film were made 2.0 stereo! I would be really surpriced to hear anything more! Those special effects were not hurried! They did use much more time to them than they do now! But the equipment to do those effects are just not what we have now. Any home computer can do now better at less time. But when they did make those effects they were top notch!
I don't understand "original 4 movies" when there's 6 movies in the series. (Oh, wait, it's so people can spend even more $$.) The vhs tapes made a nice "mural" when put together. So, overall question- how do you actually compare the difference due to 4K? Do you watch the movie on tape or regular dvd or blueray and then compare the new 4K to that??
Am I the only one who likes the packaging? It's superior to the Indiana Jones set and gives you the option to keep the whole set on your shelf or just the 4K case.
Just a typo. I was actually 3 when the first Trek came out. I used that title in the thumbnail because I couldn’t find one for this particular collection, so I just used the classic Trek logo. It would have been much easier if these were individual releases, plenty of those title logos out there to use.
It is very interesting that Paramount continues to give their marque franchises 4K sets subpar packaging. Had this set included all 6 films and the packaging better, I may well be more inclined to pick it up. As is, since I already own the 6 film blu set, this will be a pass.
The original Blu-rays of these movies all offered subpar video for the format. “Wrath of Khan” was remastered and released separately later (around the 50th Anniversary) and is at least representative of the Blu-ray format; but if all you have is the original Blu-ray set you are doing yourself a huge disservice by not picking up these fully remastered 4K iterations. In this instance the difference in video quality is significant.
Apologies to be negative but it's a really bad release on many levels. No excuse not to release all 6 of the original movies. Even if it means waiting a bit longer. The original movie is getting another remastered release next year. Again why not wait for this and release a really nice box set colectors deserve. Tell you why, cash crab. I am in no way supporting this release. Will wait for the single releases. Probably get steelbook treatment. Fans spent a lot on trek media over the years. A better release was deserved!

This is what I got from in between the lines. Inconsistent video quality. Incomplete by not having The Motion Picture Directors cut or the other two films. No upgraded audio. Bad packaging. Premium pricing for mediocre product. This set gives me zero incentive for an upgrade from my Blu-rays. It's a shame as I love Star Trek and own all the series and movies on Blu-ray/4K (Kelvin 3). Just can't bring myself to support this money grab by Paramount. They should have done it right.
As I stated in another reply, the video quality alone is a significant upgrade over the original Blu-rays, which were subpar for the format. Except for “The Wrath of Khan” - which had a separate release later - the films had not been remastered for their Blu-ray release and excessive DNR was evident throughout all four movies. Instant purchase for me as I have been waiting for these movies to be properly remastered since the Blu-ray format premiered.
Unfortunately my camera doesn’t support an external mic so their isn’t too much I can do, even in the editing process. Investing in a new camera/mic setup isn’t financially an option at the moment.
Cynical money-grab to milk the hardcore fans while they hold back the Director's Edition of TMP for Paramount Plus then inevitably release the full box sets with Director's TMP and the rest of the movies next year. Hard pass.

You should look into plex and your own media server. Convenience of streaming with the ownership of physical media. Assuming you’re cool with piracy.

I haven’t checked them myself, but I’ve read they are remastered.
Pretty sure the powers that be wanted to give part 6 the 4k treatment but skipping part 5 would’ve been too obvious!

Better picture than ever. Original audio was stereo… So audio as good as it fonna ever get. Insta buy by any trek fan until 8k disk are released.
