    I had a 986S, great car. Then I bought a 987S, fantastic car! Then I bought a 981S, I love it. On 2016 the Porsche’s dealer called me to test drive the 718S, that’s when I realized I’ll keep the 981S for years to come. Actually I think the new 718 4.0 GTS is great as well, but I don’t see it as a valid reason to leave my lovely 981S, who is still doing great and to my eyes is the prettiest Boxster

      Curious to know.. Why never go for a 996\997? Most people I know including me moved to a 911 after owning a Boxster. I went from a 986s to a 9964S. And I wouldn't change back. I will admit I miss the 986 in the summer evenings. And will probably get one again, when funds will allow it. But I'll go for a 2.7, since I don't need the extra power it offers. The 996 has plenty to put down on public roads. In any case... Happy motoring!

      @@janezpungartnik3149 To be honest with you, I don’t like the 911 convertible, and my sport car has to be a two seaters convertible. (918, unfortunately, is way out of my budget) To my eyes the 911 convertible looks like a but hub when the top is down, while the Targa is too heavy. Beside, the 911 is getting too big, while the Boxster is almost the same length and width of the originale design. Last but not least, I really like the handling of a mid engine car. 😊🍻

      Your summary is very helpful! There's an unusual phenomenon when you have something you really treasure, to get something slightly better. What if it was a little faster? A little nicer? Maybe some design surprises...
      I have an 08 S (RS60) and it's been my favorite car. It's fast where you need it. Up through the middle to high in the revs which match so many corners turning into straights.

    • @basketball798
      @basketball798 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@janezpungartnik3149 the boxter in aftermarket tweaks is a better car than the 911. The engine is in the middle and overall it's a much better design AFTER making aftermarket upgrades. The reason for upgrade is caused by Porsche holding back the boxter to save the 911

      I agree, I went from my 928S to a 986 to a 981S I love the 981S. I went for broke on the build and its options cost as much as the base car. But it is wonderful I run a Fabspeed sports headers with the optioned sports exhaust. Picked up the torque gap at low revs and a IPD Plenum. I Love to track her and it will be buried with me when the time comes. p.s. It cost more than a 911.

    Great overview but thought I’d comment on 986, re. scoring. First, early 2.5 engines are not prone to bore scoring, because they have hard-iron “Ferrostan” coated pistons. These pistons were compatible with the cylinder coating (Lokasil). Around the time the base car became a 2.7, the piston coating process changed (to a polymeric coating). Compatibility with the cylinder coating was compromised. So it’s 986s from roughly 2000-on that are prone to scoring. However, all M96-engine Boxsters have a number of things on their side, notably relatively low displacement… smaller bores, thicker cylinder walls, better cooling, less stressed, etc. In short? Get a non-S if you are mildly concerned about scoring, get a 2.5 if you are very concerned, and either get an upgraded car, or don’t bother, if you are paranoid!!

    • @JAYREAD

      We need more comments like this! Truly educational! Thank you!

    • @S50Sinner
      @S50Sinner 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I knew 2.5's were less prone to scoring, but didn't know about the coating, I thought it had to do with the smaller bore and lower heat production. Glad to learn about it now.
      I bought a 2.5 a short time ago, partially because of this, as well as the stronger dual-row IMS bearing and the more responsive mechanical cable throttle. 2.7's and 3.2's received drive by wire, introducing some throttle input lag, as well as the single row bearing. Some early 2.7's have the dual row, but as far as I'm aware there's no way to check if yours does without dropping the transmission.
      Further, the 2.5L has the shortest gearing in 1st through 3rd (The S has a 6-speed that enables a shorter 4th and 5th), making it a bit more fun and revvy at legal speeds.
      A smaller advantage is that the 2.5 can wear most 16-inch wheels and certain 15 inch wheels, such as the ones from a 944, which makes it more affordable to run a separate set of Winter and/or autocross tires. This is because the brakes are smaller, which isn't exactly an upgrade, but none of the spec racers have issues with 2.5 brakes fading or cooking, so you're not losing anything but bragging rights by sticking with the small rotors. They're still 4-piston Brembo calipers all around, just like every Boxster and 911 of the era with the exception of the GT3.
      The only update I really want is a late top with the glass window, it's not a cheap assembly but it's cheaper than the price difference to a similar-condition 2.7L, and it drops right in.
      Bonus tip: 986's came with a clutch helper spring that makes the clutch feel numb, it's held in by spring pressure alone and can be removed in under a minute. Anyone who has a 986 manual should try driving with it removed, as it immensely improves clutch feedback, it's heavier but the weight doesn't take long to get used to. Some people fortunate enough to have driven both a 964 and a helper-deleted Boxster have told me the clutch feels very similar. If you don't like how it feels without the spring, it's another 1-minute procedure to put it back in, no bolts or screws required.

    Great video, Jay. I’ve got a 981base in Rhodium Silver that I’ll keep forever. I’ve owned & driven many Porsches in my lifetime and feel that my little 16’ base 981 is just perfect. It’s the only P-car I own now. Plenty of power and with the Turbo 20” wheels, she gets a lot of looks. I have access to a GT2RS whenever I want, but the RS just doesn’t give me the same glorious feeling as my Boxster as I can take the Boxster much closer to that “limit” in the twisty’s or the “occasional just for fun” track day. Long live the Boxster.

    I have owned two Boxsters and I love them. My current one is a 2008 Boxster. To me they are the perfect roadster. Classic design that never ages, great handling on the road and just enough horsepower to put the thrill into driving.
    Never had any serious issues with either one. Find a good mechanic to work on them. Change the oil every 5,000 miles and stick to the maintenance schedule and you will have years of fun driving.
    I am 76 years old and when my wife and I are out driving with the top down on a beautiful sunny day, I feel like a kid again. I will never be without one. Best way to put a smile on your face. What a freaking car!

    Thank you for this great video. Got my first Boxster in 1999. No trouble at all and crazy corner speeds. Next was 987 S. Better drive but before 70.000 km the IMS bearing killed the spirit. So I moved to 997. Could not forget the 986 and after two years a 1997 (all plastic interior and seats covered with fabrics!) joined my 997 turbo and 964. Two years ago it had to make room in my garage to a 1986 targa. Test drived 981 and 718 and I still celebrate the Boxster. For me the final divorce comes with the Boxster EV. Beautiful memories on this wonderful car, which saved Porsche but also triggered my entrance in the 911 world. Best regards from Bled 😊

    I admit I am torn by the boxster. I own a 986 base, and it is a wonderful car. I think they are a real bargain. Decent power, great handling, comfortable. But here is the rub. I also own a miata, which is not as comfortable, nor as powerful. But when I just want to have a fun drive, I pick the Miata.

    Well, I love them all. While I think the 981 is the best, I love how the older models have aged and feel like the pinnacle of that era. The interiors are timeless, and the exteriors, while criticized as too feminine, I think match that era of sports cars. Those sports cars were our best girls. However, if I had the money and space, to go with my 981, I would get a 718 because it would offer the most different driving experience.

    Thanks, enjoyed your video! Good to get some facts straight though:
    - re: IMS and Bore-score. The early cars (986 2.5) are not the most affected. Statistics show that the 2.5 cars, that have a double-row IMS bearing, are least affected. Also on these cars the IMS can be replaced without taking the engine out.
    - re: bore score … the larger the cylinders, the more sensitive these are for bore-scoring. #1 cause is driver behavior, revving a cold engine. 986 2.5 is same engine with the smallest cylinders, and as such least vulnerable.

    • @JAYREAD

    I currently own a 2000 Boxster, I can't imagine a stiffer suspension, this car is not a daily driver it is just too stiff for my taste, so I hope to take it to the track.
    I understand that from 2009 on, the interior is longer and they no longer used the doors off the 911, it finally got it's own doors. I am 6 foot and I have the seat all the way down and back, if you are over 6 foot this car will be to cramped, hopefully this was rectified in 2009. I would buy the 2009 just for the PDK, I love paddle shifting.
    I also own a 1980 MGB, it is a much more comfortable car and would make a great daily driver except in the winter, or if its raining, honestly if you have to put the top up it's like driving a phone booth, so no, not such a great daily driver and on a fast road course, a dog, but get it on the back road twisties, with its overdrive, it puts a smile on my face every time.

    As to the Boxster, I bought a '14 981 Cayman S in 2018. The guards red/luxor beige car had been in two minor accidents, cosmetic damage. I was able to get $4k off the $42k value as a result, and traded a $10k car in the bargain.
    The Cayman had a falling headliner and the door cards were peeling up; The deal was that they would replace the headliner and the cards. So I go out to Porsche West Broward with my 928 to do the trade, and "Well, the car isn't ready yet. We'd like to take your 928, and we can give you this black '14 Boxster for a day...
    [I didn't fall off the turnip truck yesterday....]
    Heh! What the hell, I'll take the Boxster for a day. I owned an '80 Fiat Spyder at one point, and I've never thought much of convertibles as a result. That was an easy car to deal with: Unclip two latches and throw the roof over your shoulder and down the road you go. I guess I just don't get the point. I like a roof over my head and the windows down instead. Being wide open is great, but it brings up all sorts of other problems that a hard top with the windows down DOESN'T have. The Boxster was nice, but it was a base and I don't want anything to do with a base model at this point, so I was happy to hand the car back to them a day later and bring my Cayman S home. But I did take it to a local bar with the Ultimate Home Appliance and she said it "wasn't bad".
    It's sad that a PORSCHE DEALERSHIP would try to force a car on me like this; I'm sure they got a better offer on the Cayman S and that is why they pulled this shit-
