    There are many 987.1 cars for sale with engine issues. 987.2 cars have great engines but can cost twice the price of a 987.1. In either case, I have found a PPI is well worth the money.

    2006 CS owner here, the cayman is a great reliable all around sports car. issues ive experienced, water pump and sagging headliner but i change the oil every 6 months and maintenance isnt all that difficult.

      Another 2006 cayman s owner here. I fixed the sagging headliner and replaced the water pump proactively instead of waiting for it to fail at a terrible time. I also recommend to change oil every 6 months. Engine is perfect so far at 55k miles.

    Engines are the key thing to look for. The years 2008/2009 divide the earlier M96/M97 engines from the later 9A1 engines. Cars made in 2009 onwards (987.2) are generally acknowledged as being more reliable, which explains their higher asking prices. I'd respectfully disagree with bore scoring on the 2.9 litre engine - LN Engineering has reported no instances of bore scoring on this model. If a 2.9 engine has scratched cylinder walls, this is almost certainly a result of enthusiastic revving before the engine has properly warmed up. The 2.9 litre engine was also the last flat 6 with port injection, meaning it does not suffer carbon caked intake valves (as found in early DFI engines such as the 9A1 3.4).
    Shifter cables are another weak spot for all 987s. These are known to break, leaving you unable to change gear in a manual car. Some owners have opted for stronger replacement cables made by Numeric. As with all convertibles, check the roof of any Boxster to ensure it opens and closes smoothly. The roof mechanism has 2 plastic sockets that can break (some say designed to break). Replacement sockets are cheap and easily sourced from eBay.
    Lastly, the battery. Check to see if it is the right size and in good health. Many Porsches aren't driven as much as they should, and nothing drains a battery quicker than a parked Porsche. Big tick if the seller has the car hooked up to a trickle charger in the garage.

      Thanks for adding the detailed comment, no doubt it will help potential owners 😁 respectfully disagreeing is what life is about and so we're happy you mentioned the 2.9. From our research we found some early cars with bore scoring (there are also a few reports with images on Porsche forums) and from memory I got an early 2.9 as a trade in when working in the automotive business that had to be auctioned as the scope images didn't leave us with enough confidence to retail the car. It is certainly uncommon but due to the potential cost of a repair we thought it worth mentioning. Buyers will be very unlucky to find one but just as its always worth checking the seam weld across the wings (fenders) and shut lines on a car that is almost new, it never hurts to over inspect a car 👍

    2011 3.4 Boxster S Jus had the PDK gearbox repaired at a specialist €7000 Porsche main agents only able to offer new box at €20K. The specialist said it's becoming the most frequent problem they are seeing across the entire range of Porsche cars fitted with the PDK box and have repaired 60+ this year, the problem is an electrical complainant.

    987.2 owner here, my suffers smoke on start up without requiring a drop of oil, it runs perfectly and it’s prevalent with the model having nearly bankrupted myself trying to resolve it at Porsche indy. I have now started to enjoy the puff 💨 on startup it’s entirely harmless.

    Just bought a 2010 2.9 boxster and pre purchase inspection true enough surfaced gas tank leak due to gasket. Having it replaced and can’t wait to get behind the wheels. Thanks for the review, I was unsure if the 2.9 would have been the best choice (vs 3.4) but knowing my regular driving style and this review, it helped me ascertain I made the better choice to suit my needs.

      I have test driven back to back the Cayman 987.2 base 2.9 and Cayman 981 S 3.4, the 981 was impressive by just a margin that I refused the offer on my 2.9 base Cayman. The Cayman S has more low down torque but within legal limits there was not noticeable difference, above 4000 rpm both were similar with the S feeling a bit more powerful at the top end. In conclusion the 981 S is faster but I do struggle to justify the premium over the 2.9 especially if you don’t intend to track the car. Just my one penny.

    • @damansarajaya88
      @damansarajaya88 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Driving my 2.9 for couple of months now, it’s great for my relaxed driving style and enough power on tap for some spirited sprints. Odd that you felt the S only slightly more powerful as the Cayman S I tried before buying my 2.9 felt like a beast especially with the sports and sports plus engaged. I knew then how much trouble the power would get me into and being a non track driver the power was just too much on reserve all the time. 2.9 is perfect 😄

      @@MrRoyck10what was the price of your car if I may ask, I’m honestly totally stuck between a 986.2, 987.1 and 987.2 but only really wanna spend about 20 grand cash, MAYBE if the car is the right color and spec I’ll spend 25K but I’m really unsure what I’m willing to spend but just want a reliable car and have been looking towards the 2.9… but am so stuck… any other advice, tips, suggestions ? This would be my first Porsche too by the way.

    Only with the music system kept going blank .. I sold it with 90, ooo miles on it I remember a guy telling me high milage ones with history are the best , as most problems would of happend by then ..do I miss it yes I do I am looking at another cayman s 2013 onwards ..

      Hartech is the most reputable place, so will be more expensive but will mean the car is worth a lot more when it comes to re-sale.

    My opinion for what its worth is that reliability is a bit subjective - 987s are all gettting on a bit so you need to be prepared to spend a couple of grand on top of purchase price to sort out any problems - a PPI is very valuable as is a warranty. I have a 2007 2.7 with 106k mileage which I bought from a reputable used garage for £9995, needed to spend £1700 to get it sorted (coils / suspension / geometery / brakes) - its now fantastic 😊
