    I never understand why some ppls like talk shit to the Boxster. It's mid-engine RWD, and it's a pure Porsche-designed and made sports car, not some made-up VW/AUDI cars. The Boxster is guaranteed to be a fun car. And it is affordable (for a Porsche)!

    I personally like the hate that the boxter gets because it keeps the price down. I own a first generation 99 model for 12k U.S. in immaculate condition with 130k miles on it. It drives like no other car I have owned and it's the funnest car I have ever owned and I've owned about 15 cars in my lifetime and I'm 53 years old.

My lightly modded 987, lightweight flywheel, tune, full Milltek exhaust, short shifter, under drive pulley, Bilsteins. I made my own 987 Spyder, even the top was part manual. It’s 90% of my Spyder with better steering.

    Every time I think of selling my 981 it ends with - 'well, what would be better?' The flat 6 in sports plus with the roof down is something I can't part with. The comments from those who haven't even sat in a 981 and want to bag it are just dumb.

    981 Boxster S owner here. Love it. Drove it and 991 911 back to back on a corporate Porsche experience day and fell in love with the mid engine balance and had to have one. Was tossing up between Boxster and Cayman. To me the ~$10k price difference and top down driving experience trumped any Boxster stigma. Seriously if I had to take it in hot pink I would the sound of the sports exhaust with the roof down is unreal

    I’ve got a 981 Cayman S, and all I can say is, what a car! Most fun car I have ever driven, plenty of power, superb handling, great engine noise. What more could you want!? Sure I’d love a GT3, or even a 911 GTS, but they are 2-5 times more than my Cayman. Yep, I reckon this is the sweet spot. Great video too btw, made me click ‘subscribe’ 👍

  • @addzy85
    @addzy85 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Boxsters and Caymans are arguably the best car Porsche makes. We have had three Cayman (987,2 x 718) and all manual covering to date combined approx 280,000klm. No major issues, 987 had a air oil separator replaced and air con compressor went. The current 718 had a actuator for the sport exhaust replaced under warranty and a recall on a replacement part in the cooling system that flagged a warning code (it was a known issue which has been fixed on later cars). Porsches warranty can be extended to 15 years (for a fee) and servicing isn’t too pricy considering the service intervals are 15k or 12 month (minor 695/major 1200). Recently did the Porsche experience at Mt Cotton and the Boxster/Cayman were my pick on the road track and the motorkhana. They are balanced and agile, which ultimately makes them nearly as quick as the 911. Anybody who says they are not a Porsche has not driven one. Great review.

    Happy owner of a 981. I absolutely love it! The mid-engine is superb and handles everything you throw at it in terms of twists and turns. I had the chance to buy a 718 and didn't go for it because I love the Flat-6 more than the Turbo. When you get that roof down in the summer there's not much like it.

    I bought a 986s with over 100,000 miles four years ago. It’s my second car. Bought an M3 v8 in lockdown. Love both… but the Boxster puts a smile on my face at legal speeds. Haters should drive one. It’s small, so have more space to play with on narrow UK roads. Handling is great because all the weight is as low and as central as possible. It works well as a convertible with a great heater so can be used in the winter and still warm enough… I could go on. It was and still is great value if you buy right.

    Put aside the remarks of those that have not driven the Boxster, those that discount the Boxster because it's not a 911, and those that bash cars for the sake of doing so. Then have any reasonable car person without a preconceived opinion drive one, any generation. If they are honest the car is undeniably excellent. I own an 01 and other cars much more costly. The Boxster has been the most trouble free car in every aspect, the most fun to drive, and still looks and operates as new. I think the style is aging well, and they have a pureness that make it one of my favorite cars that I've ever owned. If you forget how good they are, just get in, start and drive and you will be reminded again just how good they are.

    10yrs ago I test drove a 997 and a 987 Cayman S, in a very spirited fashion on roads I knew well ;) Bought the Cayman S. I prefered the handling of the Cayman, plus as a hatchback I could get my snowboarding stuff in it. Absolutely loved it. Drove all over the Alps in it including in snow which was a lot of fun. I also generally prefer the look of the hardtop but bought the 2015 Boxster GTS manual with the x73 suspension to try a convertible when living in California. Absolutely loved it and miss it! Everything about it was superb. With the x73 it was a little bit harsh in San Francisco but outside the city it was amazing. Took it to the track and was amazing there too stock. Though my pads didn't fare too well. The 981 steering is great, but the 987 hydrolic steering was better... everything else is better in the 981 which is quite a bit more modern and refined than the previous gen. Having the top down really applifies the experience and I I'd go vertically everywhere with the top down which even in cool weather is possible with the heated seats and a hat. Yes more space than you'd think...I could even get my kitesurfing gear in it. Shame a 2015 Boxster GTS in Aus costs in 2022 what I paid for a new one in California in 2015!

    Great video. Spot on. The 911 brand and Boxster hairdresser car stigma is strong. But once you drive a Boxster it’s hard to walk away not smiling or not wanting one. If enjoyment is the point of a sports car, it’s hard to argue with a Boxster. It won’t give you the status points of a 911 though. To be fair, it also feels more cramped with the roof up.

The 981 you are featuring is a sexy beast indeed. Love the rear lights and spoiler compared to mine but besides that, it's hard to pick a difference. And I have to agree that for normal road use, my 3.4 delivers all the power I will ever need. Wind her up over 200 and it feels like an afternoon cruise. These cars are timeless and will become classic collectables.

    Boxster/Cayman's mid-engine layout gives them inherent handling superiority over the 911's. 911's evolved from the 1st new series Porsche, the 1965 912 rear-engine model. The public, esp. in the vast USA marketplace, wanted more power than the 912 offered, hence the 911. Problem was, the rear-engine config. could only safely handle 100 HP or so - not designed for much more. So the handling flaw of rear-end spinning out at times, became a quality of endearment for Porsche enthusiasts. And if one could master the flaw, that was well-respected, a feather in one's cap. So the enthusiasts went for the 911's & Porsche mgmt. complied by making all their flagship models 911-based. As Boxsters & Caymans came into being, Porsche continued to pour their resources & more potent power plants in the 911. I'll have a Boxster S over a 911 any day.

      Owned a Gen 1 BRZ. As well as Cayman's and MX5's. Holy shit that BRZ was trash compared to a NC/ND MX5s. And doesn't even compare to a Cayman. Such a disappointing car. I wanted to get rid of it pretty much 1 week after getting it.

    Don't buy a Boxster if you're so insecure that you worry about what others may think. Don't buy a Boxster if you want Japanese level reliability and low ownership costs. Do buy a Boxster if you value Porsche heritage, top notch handling, exposure to the the elements, and ample power for everyday driving. Not all Boxsters are created equal. Those made before 2009 tended to suffer reliability issues that could be very expensive to repair. Those made in or after 2009 were much better in reliability and their prices reflect this. These include the 981 featured in this video.

    981 Chassis in Boxter or Cayman is fantastic, they age well always. As usual everything Porsche related is eye wateringly expensive so buy the best one you can get. A silver 981 Cayman started it all for me back in 2016. I had rented a then brand new Ford Mustang 5.0 from Hertz at Melbourne Airport, the previous renter didn't return in time so they offered me the Porsche instead. I drove it for that week and loved it, when I returned to Brisbane I started obsessing over Porsches. About 300 Die Cast Porsches, all the books, magazines, shoes, shirts, posters, the lot! A 2014 Cayenne GTS joined in 2019 followed by a 6speed 996 911 in 2020. You can well and truly say the bug bit me hard. The need for a back seat has kept me out of a 981 but thats been the only thing, these cars are glorious and the power is just right for the street! Long live the 981, the best way to spend $60-100k in this fair brown land! Oh and last but not least you can find these still under Porsche extended warranty, which you can keep active for 15 Years! Amazing...

    Here’s what you tell people who don’t know shvt about the Boxster.
    It’s a much better value first of all because in reality half the car is 911- engine, transmission, brakes, front suspension, most of the interior and much of the electronics are right off the 911.
    It’s built to the exact same standard with exact same materials on the SAME assembly line.
    this car is every bit as good as the 911 but it’s lighter and handles better and oh yah it’s a lot cheaper.
    I’ve had a 981 Boxster S for three glorious trouble free years.
    Also this car has one of the strongest, most rigid unit bodies Porsche has ever made.

  • @guss2099

    The Boxster has always been the best handling of all the Porsches, might not be as glamorous as a 911, but was made from the ground up and it’s excellent for everyday driving and the odd blasts on the weekends.
    Anyone saying that it’s a poor man’s Porsche and other shenanigans, should just go and get one.

    IMho, The Boxster and Cayman are now better than the 911. Proper mid engine layout. If it had the 911 engine/power, this discussion wouldn't even happen. (apart from those who think the engine should be behind the rear wheels because they like to die in corners :D )

    911 over everything!911 is so timeless. I would rather have an older 911 over the most modern Boxter any day. Like a fine wine, the 911 just gets sexier with time. Whereas a Boxter looks outdated fairly fast (just look at the previous versions).
    Porsche as a brand is just one step too high for me tho. Been driving BMW’s almost all my life, and even though I would absolutely love to own one, it just seem a bit too extravagant. My F80 M3 is more than enough.

      Personally I really think it is not worth it. Paying more for 85% of the same car just does not do it for me. Sure 911 is a legend but you won't really feel the difference unless you drive two every day at the same time.

    • @johnnylima9632
      @johnnylima9632 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@billygtheonly i kinda agree with this. But then again I don’t really know. One of my guilty pleasures is my f80 BMW M3 which I’ve had for 4 or 5 years now. Yes it’s based on a 3 series. Yes it’s just a 4-door sedan. And most people will say it’s “85% of a normal 3-series”….but having owned multiple BMW’s before, even “almost M-cars like the 135/335/M135/M340 and driven many more from the brand, I can assure you, the ‘normal’ BMW’s don’t come anywhere close to a real M-car, not even the M-sport or cars like the M340’s. There’s are many similarities, but the ‘real’ M-cars use 85% unique parts compared to the non-M’s. And this can definitely be felt/heard/sensed by any enthusiast!
      Now I can’t confirm whether the difference between a Boxster/911 is similar cos I haven’t driven any Porsche yet, but I believe it will be a similar story to the non-M-to-M-car debate. And for this reason I will argue your point. But, then again, for many people cars are just a means of getting from point A to B, and I’m sure they will not realise the differences.On the other hand, people like us who follow channels like Redriven and Topgear and cars in general are much different. And I think that yes, WE would def feel the difference in classes between those 2.But I won’t lie, the prices on 911’s are steep, hence keeping me away, even though it’s a dream to own one.

    • @billygtheonly
      @billygtheonly ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johnnylima9632 I completely agree with you. Between same model there is a wast difference. But on the other hand, you can watch Hoovie's or Car Wizard's reviews on Boxsters/Caymans and they all say it is basically 911 with just a little quirks missing.

    EARLY 982/718 S FROM LATE 2016. Has all the good things, PDK, PASM, Chrono, Sports Exhaust Bose audio, and a load of less important stuff.
    I bought it as a Porsche Approved Used car in July 2022, low...ultra low milage....11,250 miles. Could have been a new car.
    12 months and 5500 miles on I agree with everything you say.
    But if the Boxster isn't a "real" Porsche what is a 4 pot turbo. Boxster?
    I'd argue it is the sweet spot in the Porsche offering......
    Yes, it could sound a bit better, but with 350bhp and 310 ft lbs from 1900 to 4500 rpm in the real world it is everything you need...and it can get very close to 40mpg....
    It is light, less than 1400kg, glorious to behold....
    Would I swap it for a real Porsche (with no rear boot and the engine hanging out of the back), even if I could afford it?
    NO.
