What a fantastic video: I drive the older 986 and it's a simple delight. Thomas, your articulate enthusiasm is infectious. Thank you -- so interesting.
I own a 986 from 1997, arctic silver with red interior and 17" OEM wheels (better look than 16" and still confortable)...some great options like M030 sport chassis and Limited Slip Differential. It is a delicious car to drive. Personally I appreciate to stay in the analog atmosphere with the original Becker radio compared to the new connected option. For 2.5 owners, I do not recommend 18" wheels (not recommended by Porsche also). Great video @autogefuhl
Thank you for another great video, Thomas! The 2.5L 986 sounds a lot better than the 2000+ 2.7L, at least in the US (4 catalytic converters starting in 2000, and different intake manifold with crossover pipe). I miss my 1999 Boxster (in storage 2000km away) every time I drive the 2001 I purchased temporarily.
RED interior? YES, YES, YES please! My 987 RS 60, 6 speed manual, has GT Silver Metallic exterior, red top and beautiful red full leather interior. 3.4l with Sport Exhaust is intoxicating! Rolled over 80k miles TODAY! Over 2000 HPDE track miles and countless AutoX. LOVE IT! Thank you.
Thank you for this series! Brings back memories. Looking forward to the next visit to Porscheplatz post-pandemic. Nice video! Great Birthday present, too, haha! Happy Birthday, Thomas!
Great video comparison, thank you so much. It was largely due to your video couple of years ago on the 718 Cayman that I bought one. Couldn’t be happier with it.
Guys, this was an absolute delight. You should definitely do a premier type thing with these, it might pull in some more viewers? Hopefully. Or maybe even Patreon behind the scenes or more loosely edited versions :-D I would have loved to watch this as an hour long show really. Thank you for the content.
12:30 great observation about sitting on the car vs. in the car! I think it's one main reason why I enjoy driving my old Boxsters more than my 997 cabriolet. It feels more exposed to the elements.
@@metalguyn That reminds me to adjust it! I have a 99 Boxster that I've adjust just right but left it with a friend when I moved, and I haven't adjusted the seats (except front-back) in the 01. Come to think of it, the 01 might be power seats - shows how little I've adjusted the seats.
Really enjoyed this 😊 I would pick the new one. I always like shiny and new. I do have a small connection with the older 986 as I used to work for an independent Porsche specialist many years ago ☺️
Great video as ever. Love them both, personally owned the two in the middle, 987 and 981 from new . Shame you didn’t have them in your review as well for the full Boxster fan-fest!!
I remember in 1994 in Germany, when I first saw the Boxster on the Autobahn Porsche was testing the performance with a flat black 986 with wires and test probes all over it. They pulled over at a gas station and so did I in an Army Humvee. I asked the Porsche Driver if he wants to trade cars! He laughed and simply said...Nein Danke.
Just realized funny thing, that Porsche for me is the only one car, which I could buy just as base model without any option and my dream will come true :)
My 987S was traded in on a 981 Spyder, 144K miles on the older one. It’s like a go kart whereas my Spyder is almost Gran Touring in it’s comfort. “A newer Porsche is a better car but a worse Porsche”, if that old adage makes any sense. It does to me now. BTW, the GT Silver over Garnet Red is spectacular!
Love the old v new series 👍The red interior works on the OG Boxter - looks garish on the 718 but get why they did it. If only they could have done the mesh cover for the fans like the concept car too :) As much as I love the nostalgia and the 986 is genuinely pretty, the 718 looks the best.
I don't like the automatic transmission, but I love the beautiful red interior leather. It goes well with the metalic silver exterior. I hope to own one some day. Thank you.
Thomas: Gets a red interior Porsche as a birthday present. Also Thomas: Wow! Thanks! That's so nice! Also Thomas: Red car interiors? No! No! No! Not for me. Grateful for any present, such a gentleman.
Unfair!!! To be honest I own a 2002 Boxster S. However, if you want to compare a current Boxster GTS to a 986 you should compare it to a 986 Boxster S manual. 0-60 in 5.6 sec a more sporty suspension and 18 inch wheels is a much more fair comparison. Maybe your conclusion would be the same but I think it would be much closer. Otherwise a great video and enjoyed watching it very much.
The 986 is the most beautiful Porsche ever made, and the one Ferdinand would love the most, I am sure. It saved Porsche, by the way. But what's the importance of that small detail? Also, the 986 was already irritating for snobs when introduced ("the poors man Porsche" ). Imagine now, when a person who didn't become poor, can put a part of the profits he/she made from clever investments into buying a 986 for some 10k, repairs included.
Disappointed that the headlights are incorrect in the "original". My 1997 has the correct GT-1 inspired original all yellow (amber) lights. Why did they not get this right?
Hey Thomas, greetings from San Francisco! I love your videos! Also, I actually just ordered a 2022 Boxster and can't wait to receive it from Porsche in 4 or 5 months.
I like the red in the silver. My first car was a 1963 Ford Galaxie 2 door lightweight , white with red interior. And Yep, Even though I have an 02 986 S, I would choose the new one if given a choice.
They say that the 98 to 2009 had the same doors from the 911. They also say that the 2009 and onward has a little more seat travel. I don't know about you but I am six foot and I barely fit in my 2000 Boxster, and that is with the seat lowered and all the way back. I am thinking about the 2009 as that is the first year of the PDK and that stands for ( pretty darn quick ) plus my left knee is not very good. Thanks for showing the cut away car, really enjoyed seeing how they integrated the roll bar into the chassis frame. These are special cars, they are very small, not at all like a Corvette, totally different driving experience, more akin to Miats and MGB's but much stiffer and quicker and unbelievable handling. and braking.
Either black or tan interior for me Thomas. With the silver paint, but would not turn down the rot interior. Thank you as always for the excellent video (S).
The new 4.0 NA flat six cars are very tempting but I’m still enjoying my 1999 986 ... that little 2.5 sounds fantastic at higher revs! Great video ... hopefully the plastic rear window on the 986 in the video survived being exercised in really cold, snowy conditions!
Oh, I love comparisons like these! =) The new car looks better. As for red interiors... hm, I like when the interior has some colors. Like some accents... for example, I had a 2015 Toyota Aygo and I selected the glossy pearl black panels for the dashboard and red surrounds for the side vents and gear shifter. And with white, body color accents on the doors it looked really contrasting and nice. =) Right now I have a 2019 Yaris Hybrid GR Sport and they had an option for red surrounds around the side vents and gear shifter too, so I selected them.) So yeah, I like multi-colored interiors and those Porsche colors look good to me. Mostly red, but also has black\ silver colors. But I would choose tan color for old car and black with tan for the new one. =)
Loved the vlog Thomas 👍I have a 986 03|04 Boxster silver with blue interior and roof I have owned it for 9 years and I love it 😊it’s done a road trip down to Tarifa Spain 🇪🇸 it never missed a beat great touring car loved them long tunnels ,the flat 6 sounds awesome the new car looks awesome to but just a bit above my budget 😎👍
Yeah, very sentimental for me too.. As an adolescent I was crazy about Porsches. Knew almost every detail about every model. Hope some day I will materialize that.
Great video! - really takes me back to my first 986 in 1999. On your comment on the comfort of the seats between the 986 and the 718, the seats in the 986 look like the optional "comfort" seats with more cushioning and less aggressive bolsters, while on the 718, it has the 18 ways sports seats with the more aggressive shoulder, side and seating bolsters. It's just the way the cars are configured, but the better way to compare a comparable seat would be to sit in the sports seats from the 986 gen and compare it with the standard sports seats from the 718 model year...
Great comparison, fun to see the Old vs New. Red would be ok, if there wasn't so much of it. Needs more black mixed in. I personally love the 981 as the best mix of old and new.
Great new Series ‼️🏁 Fantastic Museum Visit!! Love the Amazing early performance lounge segment🏁🏁🏁 Oh and that’s a firm no on the red interior 😵 718 is the correct choice ✅
Thank you for the video, it's really interesting to see the cars in the Porsche Museum. I have 2 986, one a press car for Porsche UK and the other is the first RHD car and I hope to visit the Porsche museum someday!
Of course the 718 is better than the 986. It is brand new, and has a 25 year technological advantage..! In all fairness though, the 718 should have been compared against the 986 Boxster S with the 3.2 liter engine and the manual gearbox, which was the sportier alternative. All in all I agree that the 718 is the best car, but I think a 986 Boxster S offers provides more value for the money. Almost as fun, at just a fraction of the price of a 718..! 🙂
Again a superb video. You always are giving so much info in such a relaxing and enjoyable way. Great job! BTW: The 718 is a piece of art, but personally I prefer the Cayman... The lines of that car are just perfect. Greetings from Belgium.
I' ll take the 986. It is close now to be a classic. But the 16" wheels must be replaced by 18" original Porsche ones. THEN the shape of the 986 really works. Sure, the 718 is quicker and perhaps more easy for everyday driving, but it is a car that does the driving for you. All that computer nonsens drives me mad. I want to drive myself! And then remember....the 718 is 4 cyl. The 986 is a 6 cyl. A 6 cyl is the real thing for..well...everything. But of course the 986 MUST be a manual! 4-5 years from now and the 986 will begin to rise in price.
Great comparison. Thank you Thomas. I’m planning to buy old one 986 boxter (but of course not the red interior 😀) because i like retro desing and it’s cheaper. New generation is also superb. I want to go Porsche and ask them why red interior, why? It’s not good. Interesting decision.
Great review. I still owns the 2.5 original 986. Love it to bits, however there seems Iittle to compare with the new one. Old looks like fun. New looks like serious brutal race car. Due to personal experience all I can comment on is that Me and the boys tracked our car a lot and enjoyed it to the maximum over the last decade. It is very cheap to maintain and basically bullet proof as well as toughness and reliability is concerned. Value for money 10 out of 10.
Funfact: "Oldtimer" ist a german word. The correct term is "classic car". Nice comparison, looking forward to the next one. Please don't do Golfs like everyone else.
I drive a silver-on-blue 2001 S manual. No slack in the steering, thanks to 18" wheels, sticky tyres and a custom geometry setup, but I also wish I could lower the seat a another couple of inches. I really like the 718 (I'd be inclined to choose a PDK car, but I'd have to try it back to back with manual), the hood is a marvel, the interior looks lovely (it doesn't look that bad in red. In the 986 bright red looks garish! Teracotta would better) except for the button-festooned steering wheel that would look more in place in an Audi or a VW, I'm sure I'd even love the 2l 4-pot (yes, I know it doesn't sound as good, but it has a broader torque band and it's probably a lighter/more compact engine, so, swings and roundabouts...), it looks much better than the 987 and the 981, 25th anniversary silver and gold scheme looks fantastic, but... look at how much bigger it is, parked next to the old car! And the sharp-edged front wings carried over from the 981 don't really work for me, I prefer the smoother look of the original: some say the old car looks like a bar of soap but that's the 50s racer design language. This will sound a bit inappropriate, but looking down the front wings of the 986 through the windshield is like looking down a woman's cleavage... But these are minor details, any Boxster is a brilliant car. I hope they don't ruin it in the next generation: the Taycan is fantastic, but a 2-seat convertible version just wouldn't be a Boxster!
nice comparison...happy birthday ..and i would be happy with a part red interior, rather than all red. the new model, of course, ticks all our contemporary design buttons, wonder if it will age better or worse than the old model though...see you in 20 years to find out....maybe we'll be watching your nephew/niece....
Great video! It's too bad the comparison 986 wasn't a manual model. For the 2.7L, the manual is 0.9s faster in 0-60 (6.4s vs 7.3s) than the automatic and is just a much more joyful experience for a driving enthusiast.
That was fun! Hi Thomas, what happened to the other channels such as 'only electric'? Suddenly they have no videos. Were they discontinued and this is the only channel again? Thanks!
Awesome video Thomas. Both cars are stunning, but the new one is more cohesive. I think the lights at the back make a big difference in the rear look. Red? Pass. When do you pick up your 986?
The 718/Boxster is one of the last sports cars that still commits to the original philosophy. I'll take the Anniversary as a weekend toy and an M2 Competition as a daily please. And how can you not like red interiors Tomas! Silver on red is classic Porsche.
Thanks Thomas ;) i prefer the 718 model, may be because I have the 981 in my garage and the design of it is definitively a very nice look ;) Can you give us more detail about the PCM upgrade in the 986 one ?
The front of the new one looks great. The old one definitely looks better at the rear though and is less fussy. The old one is also far less aggressive looking which is a good thing in my opinion. Both look awesome though.
Great video, Thomas ! 986 is the most disruptive car Porsche has ever made - I own one and looking to buy more :-) Where can I buy the headlight that your uncle had ?
Love this new sub segment 'New Vs Old'! Very interesting to compare technological advancements over the years!
🙏
Love the retro elements in the special edition.

you can lower the seat in the 986 with the lever on the side. I just discovered that recently.

I love Porsche 🚗👍
I don't like the automatic transmission, but I love the beautiful red interior leather. It goes well with the metalic silver exterior. I hope to own one some day. Thank you.

Great video comparison, well done.
I have owned my 01 Boxster for 17 years and have enjoyed every bit of it. Plan on keeping it till I earn wings.
😄
Great video! I've had several 986's. First was a base 2000 in 2004 and a 2000 S in 2005. I currently have a 981S.

great video. I own a 2003 Boxster S. I love the car. The new ones are very nice, but my car is great for me right now.

Great comparison, fun to see the Old vs New. Red would be ok, if there wasn't so much of it. Needs more black mixed in. I personally love the 981 as the best mix of old and new.

Excellent review.
🙏🙏
Both Boxsters are beautiful cars but given the choice, I would take the new one with the 4.0 engine. I would also add that the red interior is sexy.
Of course the 718 is better than the 986. It is brand new, and has a 25 year technological advantage..! In all fairness though, the 718 should have been compared against the 986 Boxster S with the 3.2 liter engine and the manual gearbox, which was the sportier alternative. Interesting you mention the boxster T, I test drove the base 718 and loved it.
Again a superb video. You always are giving so much info in such a relaxing and enjoyable way. Great job! BTW: The 718 is a piece of art, but personally I prefer the Cayman... The lines of that car are just perfect. Greetings from Belgium.
I like the old generation. Looks like an Airstream trailer. Will never age.
The 986 steering wheel in this example is 2002-style 3-spoke, not the bigger, earlier 993-style wheel the Boxsters originally had.
I would go for the old one as it has a pure design
Great comparison
🙏🙏
I' ll take the 986. It is close now to be a classic. But the 16" wheels must be replaced by 18" original Porsche ones. THEN the shape of the 986 really works. Sure, the 718 is quicker and perhaps more easy for everyday driving, but it is a car that does the driving for you. All that computer nonsens drives me mad. I want to drive myself! But of course the 986 MUST be a manual! 4-5 years from now and the 986 will begin to rise in price.
For appearance I'll always choose the 986. I even prefer the interior. But the 718 mechanicals are unmatched.
Thomas,I'm same age with you !(from Taiwan) same Porsche Boxster enthusiast !
Another home run Thomas!
New for me. Old restored, in red, my daughter loves. I agree 917 is the best Porsche, a true sports car.
No red interior for me. Great video!
Well done Thomas, a great new segment and great content as always.
Great comparison. Thank you Thomas. I’m planning to buy old one 986 boxter (but of course not the red interior 😀) because i like retro desing and it’s cheaper. New generation is also superb. I want to go Porsche and ask them why red interior, why? It’s not good. Interesting decision.
glad u enjoyed :)
Very well presented
Thanks! Hope u re subbed
🙌
You look so much better now Thomas!
Hehe thanks m8
Great work! Love it👌
🙏🙏
Funfact: "Oldtimer" ist a german word. The correct term is "classic car". Nice comparison, looking forward to the next one. Please don't do Golfs like everyone else.
I have a 2007 987. Just turned 60,000 km today. Tempting to get the new 4.0.
I have a 2021 718 Boxster with red and black interior with mahogany trip...beautiful
Great review as usual. Does the new one have a spare wheel?
Thomas, any chance you can review the new 718 Spyder/GT4?
When I was a small child my father had a 1963 Corvair Monza. White exterior with red interior. To this day I am partial to red car interiors.
I guess Thomas wouldn't have complained if the car had a blue interior :o)
😁
I've just got to this review 2 days after it was uploaded. Thomas, are you still smiling like a Cheshire cat 😺😁👍
Red leather, lovely.
Maybe the Toyota GT86 is better
Thanks Thomas ;) i prefer the 718 model, may be because I have the 981 in my garage and the design of it is definitively a very nice look ;)
Can you give us more detail about the PCM upgrade in the 986 one ?
Nice video. Make also about old and new Audi TT
Very enjoyable review...
ive missed your video's! I like the red, it gives a sense of occasion! Its a Porsche, so why not!
Can you make a list of your favorite cars?
Good idea :)
The front of the new one looks great. The old one definitely looks better at the rear though and is less fussy. The old one is also far less aggressive looking which is a good thing in my opinion.
Both look awesome though.
Great video, Thomas !
986 is the most disruptive car Porsche has ever made - I own one and looking to buy more :-)
Where can I buy the headlight that your uncle had ?
Hehe good question, i dont have a source for that
