- I just saw "Dial of Destiny" with the family at El Capitan Theater in Hollywood. We won a bunch of prizes for being the best dressed -- but how was the movie? Here are just my initial thoughts as soon as I got home. I've had a few more since then, but this is just what my first impressions were.
Sorry about the ring light in my eyes, I did this fast and didn't thoroughly test out the footage first!

I loved it. It was a fitting end to a great franchise.
I agree with pretty much everything you said. I agree it needed to be edited down another 15 minutes or so.
I disliked the America (New York?) portion, mostly just because it was too “modern/real world” and pulled me out of the Indy universe I wanted to be in.
I did like how they handled Indy and his age. I was worried they were gonna make him exactly the way he was in his heyday, but they treated him exactly the way “Old Indy” should have acted.
I agree that it missed Spielberg’s touch and I also was expecting a Short Round cameo that never came.
My Rankings:
The Last Crusade
Raiders
Dial of Destiny
Temple of Doom
Crystal Skull
Yeah they could have configured that first hour in any number of ways, I just felt like it ran out of steam pretty quick. One of those earlier sequences needed to go... NY, Morocco, the deep sea dive... take your pick
I enjoyed Harrison Ford back as Indy and some of the action was fun, but overall I just felt like this was a disposable feeling kind of movie and the 3rd act really didn’t work for me.
Understood and I get that. It was just so gonzo I had a good reaction to it.
Thanks for this. It's because of your awesome Indy outfits we wanted to know your thoughts on this. Also because I know temple of doom is your favorite of them all! Thanks again
Thank you, appreciated!
The first hour is GREAT! The rest is good.
As an Indy fan who still liked many parts of Crystal Skull, I found DoD to be borderline offensive. It was bad on almost every level. Genuinely heartbreaking.
I don't feel like Destiny ever hit the lows of Skull; IMHO the worst things it's guilty of is being boring in spots. But either way, it doesn't come close to the original trilogy in any way.
@@MickeyLeeBukowski No, and that’s what I miss. The feeling of those original three films. Nowadays studios have so much control, I don’t think filmmakers are given the freedom. The first three was all Lucas, Spielberg and Ford with zero CGI. That will never happen again.
All 3 were lightning in a bottle moments.
I really ended up hating this movie after seeing it last year. Especially after rewatching the original four afterwards. And the reason why I say original four is because Skull was made by Lucas and Spielberg. I just didn’t like how Dial undid the ending of Skull in every aspect. Tho I rewatched Dial again recently. And while I still don’t like it, I definitely don’t hate it anymore. I think it’s serviceable on its own, but it’s definitely the weakest out of all five films. It lacks a certain energy that the other four had. Say what you want about Skull, but Skull had great pacing, didn’t feel like a long movie, and had an energy to it. Tho I do agree that both Skull and Dial are nowhere near the original three.
Also yes you’re absolutely right about the middle of this movie being a drag. From Morocco to the deep sea dive. That was the section that definitely killed this movie for me
@@alexholden2512 yeah and these were my initial impressions right after watching it. I have seen it twice since and I just feel it has diminishing returns. Still not sure how I compare it to Skull, just because I dislike the tone of Skull so much and the 2nd half of that movie is pretty bad.
