My Dad and older brother wes ent to Raiders on opening weekend years ago. Watching and remembering my father's reactions, the standing ovation at the end by the whole audience is a moment that hasn't been captured in any movie experience I have had since. It is my all time favorite film, and Indiana Jones in my opinion the greatest character in motion picture history. I'm a child of the 70s and 80s. I played with and owned most Star Wars figures, but it was Indiana Jones that got me out into the woods and truly played, re enacting scenes from the movie..even breaking the garage door opener pretending to save myself from a closing wall. It's amazing that I will be spending my 50th birthday June 29th sitting with my 2 sons experiencing their first Indy flick. Thank you for this wondering little review.

To me, the opening was the best part of the movie. Yes, CGIndy was a little distracting, but the stunts, staging, and action were classic Indiana Jones. I loved the music and how everything wrapped up that it could have just slapped "The End" after it, and I would have been satisfied. @@Outpost31Research Yeah, a lot of that comes from studios using VFX and post production as a concepting stage AFTER the shoot, or high-ups changing their mind about what they want during post. The best stuff uses digital extensions, which is where they'll build as much of a set as possible and then digitally extend it. David Fincher actually uses this technique A LOT, and you never even notice it. But constantly "touching up" stuff with CGI very rapidly deteriorates the compositing because the artists get less and less time to make sure it looks right against a deadline, so an over-reliance on "just doing it in post" puts the whole movie on the back foot.

I'm almost 40 years old and the first movie I'd ever see in theatres was Last Crusade in '89 when I lived in Greece; I went with my parents when I was only 5 years old. We moved from Greece to Canada the next year. I took my parents to see Dial of Destiny last night and relived our experience 34 years ago... when Indy wanted to stay in the past, we all started to tear up.. and the waterworks really went off when Marion came onscreen at the end. We're a Polish family with a strong sentiment for our time in Greece... Dial of Destiny felt like it was written for us. We all loved it.

The single biggest thing that encapsulates Chris’ problem with critics these days is the popularity of Rotten Tomatoes as the fundamental judge of a movie’s quality.
Critics are now valued, not for their individual reviews and the quality of their individual experiences with the film but for their collective agreement over whether a film is good instead of bad.
It’s a system that benefits films that satisfy everyone over niche or experimental films that may not be for everyone but will absolutely blow away the ones they will be for

Chris always gives a film a fair shake. That being said, now that he's a filmmaker himself he seems incredibly less likely to be overly critical of another filmmakers work, which, while kind and considerate, also robs something from a film's critique. I'm not saying that happened with this film, but I do think the fact that Chris felt it necessary to spend 5-6 mins attributing the feeling of disappointment for an ill-conceived and unnecessary entry in a classic franchise is somehow mostly the audience's fault because of the inherent hope and expectation that a new entry will recapture the magic of the older films, is in itself a little disappointing and disingenuous.
There are plenty of examples of legacy sequels that have been embraced and adored by their fanbases that didnt need these excuses and I think it's a little cynical for filmmakers to want all the built in excitement and fan expectation that comes with these properties and that may lead to a big hit while also wanting none of the criticism when their efforts swing and miss.

      Top Gun Maverick
      The Wolverine
      Logan
      Tron Legacy
      Mad Max Fury Road
Star Wars Episodes 2 and 3
Chris is wrong here. A sequel or prequel can absolutely live up to expectations or even exceed them. When the audience is put first, when the customer is put first, when the fanbase is put first. When the directors and producers try their best to make an entertaining movie without destroying the source material, updating the source material or talking down to the audience.
I would add. A movie critic's job isn't to give bonus points to a film just because they sympathize with the director. It's to criticize or praise the movie based on if it's good or not.

Hey Chris, I just discovered your Indiana Jones fan films today and watched the old clips from your video 7 years ago. You’re wrong about the end product not being amazing. I really appreciated all the effort you and your friends put into your work!
The clips brought a smile to my face and really demonstrated your love for movies. I wish you all the best in your new indie movie, and to think this journey all started with an Indy movie :)

His is the only major review that was overly positive about the movie which is fair enough if it’s opinion. All the rest said it was not as good as crystal skull.
But, I have noticed that his recent reviews avoid any serious criticism and are all very praising. It’s a shame and it means I don’t really think he is trying to be objective any more, or give his real opinion. His old reviews had some wonderfully insightful criticisms which he didn’t shy away from.
