Even though I love the Raiders hat more (yes, I love the tight pinch), I feel like Indy's look from the bridge scene (shirt torn without one sleeve, wet clothes and machete in hand) is the definitive adventurer look for the character. It just suits him so well, whenever I think "adventure", I see Indy all battle damaged, ready to cut that bridge!
Caleb, (the adventure den) here on my other channel. This video makes me so happy. The Temple hat is my favorite and me and my friends have had this discussion many times and pored over so many photos. It’s been great seeing more people come around to it. Go Doomers!
This was a very interesting video. Mainly because my fedora (whilst being one of the Stetson copies) is a Temple hat and it has the qualities of the latter half of the film. It has a tight front pinch, until you put it on your head which then makes it widen out properly. The band and color of the hat is flipped however. It looks darker brown, like it was soaked and the brim is a bright brown like how it looks in certianly promos for Doom. Its an oddity, at the end of it my Doom and Cruades hats are my favorite and i hope to own a true Crusader hat in future
there are definitely hat makers that aim to make the Temple hats have that soaked appearance, but the easiest way just seems to be to start with a Sri Lanka style hat and get it wet!
Hey brother. Just watched your Worst hat video…. LOVED IT ! Dude I thought I was the only one that felt that the Indygear/cow was biased. I admit I was bitten by the raiders bug but over time I started seeing what you explained in your video. My fedora is LC and jacket is LC (I have a raiders Nowak) but I’m my older years I like the softer front and not the drastic hard pinch. And the turn is horrible on me ! Preach on brother ! Just wanted to say thank you and be well!
I love the Temple hat too. In fact, I love all the Indy hat styles. The fedora look in Raiders has a cartoon quality about it. It's an overly exaggerated hat, almost a caricature of a fedora. Rather than it being a real thing, it looks like it's been drawn by a comic book artist. But maybe that's the charm. The hat fits with an overblown adventure serial character. Perhaps we subconsciously expect the character to wear over the top clothes. I think it's unfortunate that in some instances, the enjoyment of the character and the adventures that he finds himself, can be derailed because someone isn't happy if Indy wears his satchel OVER his jacket! Man alive! How will we survive? 🤠
Well, maybe you can call me a Raiders nerd, almost for the jacket. But if I had to chose a hat one day (I still have none), it would surely is a Temple hat. I personnaly don't like the pinch of the Raiders one. The Temple one looks perfect to me.
Raiders is my favorite hat, but it's not as versatile as TOD and onwards, but will always be my preference for casual or smart casual. I've actually stopped wearing my Raiders hat once I got my Advintage Skull and HJ Dial hat, the latter of which I'm currently wearing. I'm looking at getting an Advintage TOD now because of you and Kirk kill it with Doom ensembles.
TOD is also my favorite movie but all my fedoras have the Raiders bash 🙃 because it was the first movie this famous hat was shown. 😊 OK ... next one will be another AdVintage ... with Temple bash ... for shure! 🤠👍 Regards from Austria 🍻
There’s an argument that the ugly hat used in these photos was also a branded deal to showcase what Stetson was offering to LFL, but it may very well be the shrunken HJ. As I get used to shrinking felts the taper people associate with doom is typical with a shrinking hat that wasn’t upkept well for sure.
I've heard that rumor too, but I haven't seen much proof. Reading the Rinzler book is interesting because you get a real idea for how all these props were shipping around between HF, stunt folks and 2nd unit and it's apparent they were really put through the ringer!
@@MickeyLeeBukowski Oh no doubt, even the hat in Raiders you can tell gets its shape based on the filming conditions and the production schedule. The focal length on the lens I think has a part in the look in the movies and it contributes to the oversizing and wonky shapes certain hatters offer.
I definitely agree the Raiders purists can get really annoying especially when they try to invalidate your passion for other Indy movies and costumes. The majority of Raiders cosplayers go for the Raiders gear because that’s just their personal preference and they prefer that look. That’s how it should be. Love them or hate them there’s 5 Indiana Jones movies and a ton of different looks an Indy cosplayer can go for. The toxicity from a minority of fans can have on different variations for Indy or the people who don’t have a Raiders build can really suck the joy out of this hobby.
So what does Michelson say? Started on Club Obi Wan for the jacket (I ended up with a couple of TOD versions) but eventually ended up at the Fedora Lounge for my wardrobe. Had Steve Delk build me a few fedoras over a decade ago, bought a GladHatter, Akurba, HJ and a few others. Luckily, my head is a Long Oval.
One thing I'd like to mention, re: your comments on how the ToD hat went through a lot during filming - there would have been several hats made for both Ford and for use in Stunts. It wouldn't have been the same hat throughout and Ford and his stunt doubles wouldn't have shared a hat. This is one of the major reasons why the hats look different throughout the films.
Yes there were about a dozen hats made. But they all went through hell due to the sheer amount of stunts in this film. But all the Sri Lanka stuff was done first and that's why the hats look the best there. The hats where Ford is wearing them in the mine scenes were filmed way toward the end.
While the Raiders style is my favorite, I still like all the other styles (especially the Temple on location on the rope bridge). I love that the hat (as well as the rest of the costume) is different in each movie.
I loved this video! Great content!! I don't get why some people like to hate on the Temple of Doom hat, I like it a lot. Indygear has some great information, but the section on the Temple fedora is certainly lacking. I'm slowly but surely getting myself into the hat making game and I'm trying to make a hat from each movie (In release order rather than chronological order.) Already made a Raiders (I went for the Idol grab scene, as you said there's a "Hobo" aspect to some of the other hats that I don't care for.) and now I'm hoping to make a Temple. If you know a place I can get accurate info on the ToD hat, please let me know, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks for this awesome content!
I'm no hat making expert, just a fan! IndyGear has some measurements at that link I posted. You can take them for what they are worth. Good luck on your hatmaking! indygear.net/fedora/
I read somewhere (long before indygear came around but i can't recall exactly where) , that there were several hats made/used during filming by Harrison and the stunt doubles /stand ins during all the original 3 movies.
Yup that is absolutely true -- usually about a dozen per film. But they were all made the same style for each film. There are 5 Indy movies and the hat for each one is distinct.
Yes but there's a continuity error in the cockpit when Indy taps on the fuel gage and it cuts back to the closeup of Indy it's a different hat he's wearing..@@MickeyLeeBukowski
Great video. I personally am a Raiders guy….however I love and respect TOD (my number 2 Indy fav). I’ll never understand some of the negativity out there with Doom. Keep the great videos coming!
Great video! I'll just say this: Raiders is my favorite. Saw it at a formative age and all that. But in my opinion there was a promise made by the Peruvian sequence at the beginning of the film. That promise was kept by Temple of Doom. Does that follow? There was an intense feeling of 1930s Pulp in that first sequence that you can feel all through Temple of Doom. And I love it for fulfilling that promise. Also, there are no bad Indy hats. Except in the Young Indiana Jones TV series...still don't understand what they were going for there...
@@MickeyLeeBukowski Indeed! The hat from the Peru sequence was the first hat I LUSTED for. The second was the bridge sequence in Temple. Funnily enough, the third best look that I preferred was the pier scene in Last Crusade - and THAT'S the only one of the three that I have! Need to work on that...
Honestly, there are times in Raiders that the hat looks like it’s about to fall apart and be a former hat! While I have to disagree and say I like (in general) the Last Crusade hat the most, the Temple hat looks awesome in a lot of scenes, and the Skulls hat was the best part of that film, beautiful piece!
There’s about 4 companies that ALL claim THEY made the hats for Temple of doom. Never in my life have I seen MORE people claim MORE companies made ONE hat in my ENTIRE life. LOL
@MickeyLeeBukowski So in this regard, they aren't exactly lying they just aren't being fully truthful either. Baron Hats and even possibly Stetson both made hats for TOD however they were only made for the stunt crew or as "spare hats" in case Harrison ever ruined one of the HJs. The only hat to ever touch Ford's head though was a Herbert Johnson. If you see Harrison's face then it's a Herbert Johnson. For action shots and stunts where the hat could get ruined on a Stuntman they used one of the other companies. I will say Baron has proof his hat was used by stunt crews. He has picture evidence of his hat on the ToD set. Stetson has never really been able to prove it and their hats being on set are more of a rumor. But yes the only hat to ever touch Ford's head is a Herbert Johnson.
After being pure Raiders Indy cosplay for years I am thinking about switching to TOD. I can never get a Raiders fedora to look right on my head. I have a different head shape than Harrison and can never get the Raiders turn to look right. therefore, I think TOD is a better choice for me. I like Last Crusade, but it seems like everyone either does Raiders or Last Crusade. So, I think I am going to take the road less travelled.
I love all the fedoras buy Raiders is my favorite lol but I do got to admit the Temple of Doom 1 does stand out because there's so many looks in that movie compared to the other ones because of stuff like this like you're mentioning
That looks like a temple of doom hat to me. Not only are the images on Indygear the worst images they could’ve gotten… But they are also dimensionally squished vertically.
They really did choose the worst photos of the hat in Temple. For a while, I thought that they just had a couple different hats since it really depends on the scene but the end of production shrinkage explanation makes so much sense. I still have a Raiders Hat preference, but Temple is in a very close second (his whole outfit is probably the best Ford looked in any of the movies. Who doesn't love ripped shirt Indy?) With that, I think Last Crusade is the worst looking Indy in general out of the movies. Weirdly proportioned hat, buttoned up shirt and tie for most the movie, barely any scruffy facial hair... he looks like a dork. It balances out a little once we get to the tank chase onwards when he gets dirtier and bloodied, but boy I hate how they styled him in that movie.
I'm 100% with you on that. I think the overall LC look is hindered by a few things -- first, the late 80s trend for clothes to be very baggy. Second -- HF was nowhere near as slim as he was in Raiders and Doom (heck he looked better in Skull!). The LC jacket is kinda formless compared to the Raiders and Doom jackets, which were more tailored. And I know a lot of guys like it for that reason, it's just not for me.
HJ lost the supplies they used to make the Raiders. This had been confirmed. They used new supplies to recreate the Fedora. HJ also states LC fedora is in the middle of Raiders and Temple. Lol. Also, HJ made dozens of these hats for each movie so some of your arguments isn’t valid. Those LC images are promotional images, not sure how many of those hats were actually in the movie. Imo, Temple is the weakest

But I'll repost here: herbertjohnson.co.uk/blogs/journal/mythbusting-the-indiana-jones-hero-poet I'm well aware that several hats were made for each film. No, the only LC promo image was the one with Spielberg and Lucas -- the others were all taken on-set. And if IndyGear can pick and choose, so can I. And you missed the main part of my argument -- even if HJ could make perfect Raiders replicas for each film, the decision was made to go with the Temple style hat. I've had several people approach me after this video was posted to say that Harrison Ford himself wanted the hat that way. Steve Delk would have gladly made him a Raiders style. He didn't want it. And that's just like...your opinion, man.
@@MickeyLeeBukowski very interesting blog. Thanks for sharing. If this is the case, then why can’t HJ create the same style poet from film? I own a poet and it’s not same as the film.
