Milwaukee M18 FUEL Compact & Mid-Torque Impact Wrench Review

  • Fresh off the Milwaukee Pipeline event, we pull out all the stops and test all of the newest Milwaukee M18 FUEL compact and mid-torque impact wrenches. Before reaching for that high-torque, you might want to give the new second-gen Milwaukee mid-torque impact wrench a close look. It's smaller and lighter than a high-torque-yet it won’t leave you wishing you had more power. If you work on small engines, the compact makes for a nice solution that's easy to carry.
    Mid Torque Models
    3/8-inch friction ring (Milwaukee 2960)
    1/2-inch friction ring (Milwaukee 2962)
    1/2-inch pin detent (Milwaukee 2962P)
    Compact Models
    3/8-inch friction ring (Milwaukee 2854)
    1/2-inch friction ring (Milwaukee 2855)
    1/2-inch pin detent (Milwaukee 2855P)

    Recently purchased the M18 Fuel 1/2" Mid Torque Impact, so far I love it. Busted my trucks wheel lugs off, without even breaking a sweat. It's amazing, you used to have to drag around an air impact for this stuff. Love it.

    Upgraded from an older 18v kit. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxW1vOBRCMrgTCDEijzpVzDWsgI-Jm2iQv I independently chose the drill and impact tool, before I came across the kit.I like the 3 speed impact gun. It seems more powerful than my older one, and it can be set to be really gentle. The drill is more appropriately sized for my use. I used to have a hammer drill, but I did not like that it was so big and it was not a great hammer drill. I rather have a smaller drill like this, and then get a corded hammer drill for the odd case I need that.

      By chance do you also have the M12 stubby? I ask as I have both battery types and debating about which would be the better tool. I already have the BIG M18 Fuel so looking for an additional lighter/smaller tool that's beyond what my M12 ratchet can handle. The M12 is a little cheaper but the new lights seem like a nice upgrade and it seems like the M18 might have a bit more snort even though the specs are the same. I really wonder if the extra cost/weight of the M18 is worth it over the M12..

    I would really love to get this new slimmer design for the mid torque but unfortunately I can't wait as I have a job to do this weekend and its about to get very cold here in New England. I did get a kit with two batteries and a charger with the prior model for about $120 less than this new one would cost. But that's ok as they have similar power. The other nice improvement on the new model is the better lighting. But overall I'm not too disappointed as this will be my first power wrench and I'm sure its going to be great for DIY jobs.

    Great review as always! I actually bought the 2962 after watching this video when Tom said he would pick the mid-toque. I just received it today. However, I found the anvil has some back-and-forth movement/play. One can feel the movement when pulling/pushing the anvil, or when raising and then lowering the tool. I don't have other impact wrenches to compare, but is this normal? I would think this back-and-forth play of the anvil when the hammer is working will produce a force towards the bolt/nut, and maybe cause damage to the threads?

    • @kringsman00
      @kringsman00 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Protoolreviews That's a good point no need to push the tool. My original thinking was that the spring driving the hammer produces both the rotation force and forward force so the back-and-forth play of the anvil would facilitate the forward force. But if one does not push the tool, maybe that's fine. Good to know that all other impact wrenches also have that play. Thank you!

    I'm so glad I did my research. I have an m12 stubby and was ready to buy the m18 stubby but saw it only had like 20 ft lb more of nut busting. That would of been so pointless to get the stubby when I have the same thing pretty much in the m12. Also the m12 seems slightly smaller. The m18 mid torque seems like a must have. I have my big m18 that does the 1400 ft lbs but that thing is so damn hefty and not fun to hold. This mid torque looks perfect.

    So... Say I would only use one of these impact wrenches to do seasonal tire changes and brake maintenance, would the compact be enough to suit my needs? • @MrSupernova111
      @MrSupernova111 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, the compact will remove your lug nuts if they are only 80-100 ft lbs like they are supposed to be. It might be a bit slow in comparison but it should work fine. Be sure to look up the torque specifications and don't use the gun to tighten them. However, the compact gun will probably struggle with suspension bolts.

    Whats the difference in the friction ring n the pin dentent n is the mid torque better than the compact

    • @mdinelle
      @mdinelle 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The difference is the way the socket is held on the anvil. Friction ring is a rubber ring that grabs onto the socket by pressure and pin detent is a small spring loaded pin that engages in the small hole typically found on the side of impact sockets. If you swap sockets frequently, I recommend the friction ring, pin detent is a pain in the arse in that use scenario.

    Looking for your opinion. I just bought the 3/8 mid torque, 8ah HO battery, and use Capri impact sockets. I wasn’t able to loosen brake caliper cage bolts set to 180ftlbs (I had already broken them in the past with breaker bar and retightened to spec). Out of curiosity I put a 1/2 adapter on and 1/2 impact sockets and it came right off. Do you think the Capri sockets are causing that? I’m about to trade in for the 1/2 mid torque.

      Damon LuVisi . Not in my opinion. The high torque has 1400 ft lbs of torque and you’re more likely to break a lot of bolts than to get your money’s worth. Unless you work with commercial equipment I think the mid torque is perfect. I used mine for the first time last weekend on my Accord’s suspension parts with no problem at all. I respect the power of this tool and I’m very careful to use it appropriately.
