Thought it might be worth clarifying! This isn't a spec list ranking, it's an opinion based tier list of my own personal experiences with each camera and what it means to me. Which is why the G7 ranks higher than the G80/G85, for example
Makes total sense. I was too focused on the specs, and as I thought about it, I get your ranking. The G7 was the first camera I bought for myself. It’s the camera that really made me love photography and solidify my joy of videography.
@@freezerfridge7486 My first camera was the lumix G2. Worth picking up if you wanted that traditional DSLR style camera. Great camera and I was very impressed with the results. I've since upgraded to the G85.
Thanks for clarifying, but the first/best place to clarify that these are your personal and totally subjective opinions might have been in the title you chose. I'm all for being 'brutal' in any fair (and informed) assessment, but 'brutal opinions'??? Case in point is your brutally opinionated (and uninformed) trashing of the E-M1X. It's ok that you want every MFT camera to be small and light, but if you've never shot a live sporting event (or even a wedding) -- where half or more of your shots are in portrait orientation, the event goes on for HOURS and you NEVER have time to change batteries, then of course you wouldn't 'get it' that the E-M1X is the perfect camera for that stuff. The MAIN point of MFT is NOT smallest camera bodies, it's the size, weight and cost of the total SYSTEM that you can haul around (including fast telephoto glass). The extra size and weight of an E-M1X is nothing compared to the weight of the GLASS you save with MFT. My E-M1X has well over 100K clicks and I wouldn't trade it for anything else on the market. Sorry Emily, I mostly like your stuff but this one...not so much. Am I being too 'brutal'?
I use mine a lot. Every time I do so I promise myself a camera with a bigger, better EVF and that I'll sell the GX80 to pay for it but I didn't find anything better yet and anyway the results are so good.
I loved my gx 80. My best friend got it as a present when I got my first Olympus, the EPL10 (I know it wasnt the beat deal 😂). Then I got the EP7 and then the EM1X which I still own and a G9 II. 😊 I love the em1x also there are people who hate about it..
I took my GX80 on holiday to Costa Rica. I found out why rainforests are so-called and that my “waterproof” backpack wasn’t. I ended up pouring water out of the camera - literally. 3 days later, I was back shooting photos with it. Fantastic camera for the money.
Hi Emily, new subscriber here and new to MFT after a (very) long absence from photography. Thank you for your content, you are an absolute joy to watch.
Happy to see the E-M5 up there. The 1st OM-D! I think the E-M1 Mk II is another legendary M43 camera after it had the major firmware update to improve the autofocus.
The em5 mk2 is my favorite camera and I miss it, I've been thinking about hunting down the titanium version to put back in my kit. Too bad Olympus didn't stick with the build quality for the 5 series omd's.
@@zachbenson9548 I also have a E-M5 Mk II. Yes I like the build quality and features of the Mk II over all the 5 series. The Titanium version is nice but expensive. Nice for a collectable camera though!
Upgrade to EM1 mk II from mk I has been the best camera swap I ever made. It's gonna be the only camera I'll ever need for wildlife photos and videos paired with 75-300mm lens. Total used price well under AUD1000! If that's not at least blooming brilliant I don't know what is😂
Love this Emily. As usual, fun and informative. M43 is my favourite camera format of all time. Lots of full-featured cameras to choose from. And you always remind us that "new and shiny" isn't always necessary to get great photos. Sometimes we forget that. (ps. Love your OM1 Mk2 rant.)
This was a lot of fun to watch, and I also admired the images you shared as examples of what these cameras can achieve (in the right hands). In short, bloomin' brilliant!
The E-M10-II is legendary. They stuck all the features in it that they could think of when the marketing division was not paying attention. It even has 4 (!) custom modes on the dial. The OM-5 only has one. One! And it's small and metal built. They downgraded the line after that, clearly indicating this little camera was too good.
Somehow I think the E-M5 and E-M10 have exchanged places in this ranking. The whole E-M10 series is definitely more suitable for hiking and outdoors, and when not, the E-M1 series (all iterations, including the X...) are more interesting and capable than the E-M5.
Also it's important to consider the price. When I bought my E-M10III I was beginning in photography and wasn't sure I'll be doing this for more than a few months, so I didn't want to pay twice the price for an EM-5 only to have a camera 30% better
Panasonic Lumix G1 should have it's own special life time award for being the one who started this whole mirrorless movement. I am a bit biased. G1 was my first system camera back in Dublin 2008 and start of my photography hobby, and i own and use 2 of them still :)
These micro four thirds used cameras cost the same as a used full frame camera. I was thinking these would be smaller, lighter and importantly CHEAPER. I wanted to learn photography. So I got a used Sony A7s2. Then lens I got with it was damaged. I thought buying a zoom lens would help me practice diversely with different focal lengths. Bought the Tamron 24-70 f2.8. The thing is I don't keep my camera with me. I should have got a fixed focal length lens (which would have also been smaller) and a smaller camera so that I can keep this handy with me always. I need to practice more and more. The setup I have currently I just don't carry with me. Keeping in mind I want to click pictures in low light during evening and night after office, please share some suggestions for a body and lens to have with me everyday.
You gotta give the OM1-X some more cred. Micro four thirds is unique in that it has this lineup of just tele(zoom) lenses that are absurdly small given it's size, but still big (for m43) lenses and it's the perfect camera for handling those lenses, and I think it demonstrates the sheer versatility of the m43 system. Personally I like small cameras though and if I was in the m43 system I'd love to have an PEN-F and a GM1. And yeah, I'm not a m43 users, but I watch your channel, because it's bubbling over with joy for cameras and photography. I may have my brand preferences (Fujifilm), but ultimately I just love seeing people using *actual cameras* (as opposed to phones) and keeping the spirit of photography alive. And you always show such beautiful photos in your videos!
For stills, I agree wholeheartedly. I think it's video capabilities are more than enough for me, but looking at it objectively, probably the G9 is the better hybrid camera. With the way photography has given way to videography in the last 5 years or so, that has to be a big consideration.
I needed a robust camera that can withstand the Norwegian winter since most of the year is cold and wet here. After much back and forth, the choice fell on an EM1 Mark ii with 5000 shutter action together with an Olympus 14-150mm ii and 2 batteries. Everything is in mint condition and I paid only 600USD for this. I am 100% sure that for that sum there is no better solution today. Thanks
If I had the money I would be buying a G9 II. Agree with you 100% on MPB. Bought several things from them and always happy with the service and speediness of delivery. Not to mention the fact that whatever you buy is well packaged.
Good Tier List, I agree. Especially because I use the g9 Mark 1 and the gx80. Both stunning cameras. The g9 can do everything I need. The gx80 is perfect for everyday carrying and street stuff. They complement each other perfectly. The gx80 has a special place in my heart as its my first camera and I learned photography with it ❤
The little animation of the item wavering before it lands in the tier is something I don't think I've ever seen in a tier list but makes it a lot more fun, nice touch
What about the Panasonic GX9? In my humble opinion a photo centric camera - one of the best for street photography and low light work. Small, light, well constructed, 20 meg AA sensor, stabilised and a flip screen for shooting from the hip. It's the G9's little brother. I couldn't live without it! Okay, it's not weather sealed, and you might need to buy a bigger grip, and it only takes one SD card, but hey, for discrete street work and travel, what more do you need?😊
E-M1X is a camera I kinda wish I had. The weight is unnoticeable in the hand because the ergonomics are so so good. Being a gripped camera it was never intended for everyone, but for those who appreciated it, there has been nothing like it, before or since.
as someone who shot on 1dx's for years then picked up this bad boy... gosh i love it so much. Yes there is a time and a place but when it came out it had such cool features and it feels better in my hands than most of the cameras on this list.
The GF1 and 20mm f1.7 changed my photography. the g5/g6 with the 14-140 and oly 9-18 and a fast prime was a lovely travel combo at that time. Panasonic need to start making small bodies again
This is what I have taken the most pictures with. The controls seem to find your fingers when you need them. I won't update the firmware the camera works perfect for me.
I'm new to 4/3. Coming from full frame. I'm not a beginner. I shoot landscape, street, architecture, nature and occasional portraits for friends. I'm a big Canon color fan. Which model would you recommend?
I have two EM5's (the original) that I use on a daily basis as my only M4/3's cameras. I absolutely love them still. I am GAS'ing for that Panasonic G9II though. I'm really interested in its focusing system and the real time luts. Have you done more with the real time luts in the G9II?
I have! I use that feature all the time with my own custom presets in the camera, it can be super creative and definitely cut down on editing time. I think I am overdue a new "real time lut photo walk video" 😊
Love my GX880 (GX850), it's just a tadge larger than the GM1 but to me much more useable with its tilting screen, plus improved focus and dynamic range. I wish Panasonic would start shrinking their latest tech into these tiny bodies again.
Great video! I am not familiar with all of the cameras in your rankings, but I have a couple of them - the E-M5 II and the OM-5. The E-M5II was my first M43 camera, moving from full-frame Canon 5DM3. The E-M5 II is what sold me on the system, and I then got first one and then a second E-M1II. I still use the E-M1 Mark IIs for all my professional work, and I am sure that camera would rank well on your list if you were familiar with it. The E-M5 II got boxed up and put away for years as I used my E-M1IIs exclusively for everything. My main reason for this is they handle and operate differently enough that I felt it was better to stick with the Pro bodies for everything. Recently, my sister bought me the OM-5, and it is a really nice little camera, reminding me of how much I liked the E-M5 II. So, I dusted off my E-M5 II and I have been rediscovering just how great this little guy is! The OM-5 is updated, better sensor, more features, and extremely light, but I love the feel of the E-M5 II. Again - great job on the video. Love your channel!
The Olympus E-P1 needs to be right up the top! One of the most beautiful cameras ever made. It's small and sleek, but has a lovely metal finish and is built like a tank. Pair it with a nice prime lens and it still produces amazing images :)
OM-5 is an EM1 iii in the EM5 body. Coupled with the Oly 75-300mm ii is the best light wt birding camera set up end of story. With procapture i regularly nail 10-20 consecutive frames of bif and i'm 73 with 3 spinal fusions !
thats good to hear, I was considering buying an om5mkii for wildlife, I have fujis but they are quite heavy and the lenses expensive, I was thinking of trying m43
My first camera was the Lumix DC-FZ80 and quickly upgraded to G7, later bought LX100 all great cameras and then I sold them all for the x100v which I hated. Recently bought the GX80. Love MFT. Love the channels
The EM-1 X has its place. That thing is nearly unbreakable and if they came out with an OM-1 X, I'd get it. The EM-1 MARK II is my MFT GOAT pound for pound.
Absolutely with you on that one, E-M1 II is for me one of the best cameras I have ever used, full frame, APS-C or M43. I loved the E-M1X as well but they really got it spot on with the E-M1 II .
When fall and rain comes around here in Finland i am going to get one of those + 12-40mm 2.8 oly lens, propably from mpb. EM1X size is fine, i am 6.4" / 285lbs with rather large hands.
I think you may have been a bit brutal on the Oly M10. Having owned the M10, and still using an M10 Mark II along with a M1 MARK ii, and having owned and using an M5 Mark II, I find the M10 to be a great little camera. I may be a bit biases as the M10 was the first camera I ever "loved" due to it's ergonomics (with a grip attached) , but I think the M10 II is a great camera and very budget friendly! But...just my humble opinion. Thanks for an interesting video. OH...and with the PL series (I started with a PL2, then PL5), Olympus really blew it when they got to the point of having a PL camera that was not compatible with a electronic viewfinder. As far as I'm concerned, if there isn't a viewfinder, I don't want it!
Yeah the E-M10 had its place back in the day. The E-M5 was better but also a lot more expensive, when they first released the price was $1000 vs $700 so if you didn't care for weather sealing it was a bargain imo! Obviously nowadays you can pick both bodies up very cheaply so you may as well get the EM5.
I agree with you the EM10 mkii with the Oly handgrip make it feel much better in the hand and a great every day camera. With its tilt screen and ability to assign my sets to the dial make it a great all rounder. Also agree with the EPL comments after the EPL8 they all seem to have been downgraded.
@@Cubeforc3the e-m10II is 79 grams lighter than the e-m5II, and around 100+€ cheaper too, which translates to the e-m5II to being about 50% more expensive (at least on the European market). That might be insignificant and either way cheap to some, but it's a significant difference. (And the e-m5I is worse than the e-m10II in all but weather sealing) edit: I realised you were perhaps specifically talking about the mk 1s, which are more closely priced, and the e-m10 not especially great so I wouldn't object as strongly there.
As a budget challenged photographer who mostly shoots "street," doesn't shoot video, and and lives in a rainy climate I have yet to find a better option than my now 11 year old Olympus E-M1. Very Inexpensive now. ✅ Weather sealed. ✅ Image stabilized. ✅ Tilt screen. ✅ Rugged. ✅ Numerous firmware enhancements. ✅
You have GOT to upgrade to EM-1 II. It's almost as good as the OM-1. The difference is night and day. It is a HUGE difference when updated with the latest software and stomps the EM-1 with ease.
Great video, but I'm biased because I've owned a couple of your god tier picks! There is one camera that could have made the list, and that's the GM5. I know it's almost identical to the GM1 but it has a built-in EVF. For me, when it comes to photography, an EVF is a deal-breaker, which is why I'm so frustrated the Oly EPs don't have them. I don't know if it's still true today, but when it came out, the GM5 was the smallest interchangable camera with an EVF. It takes excellent pictures and is a masterpiece of engineering from Panasonic IMO. Truly jeans-pocketable. Why don't they make cameras like this any more?!
This was fun. I want all of these cameras. Silly note: I have an e-pl10 and I only ever use it when I have to be an art gallery or a fancy party or someplace where I need to look stylish. I also put on my chunky artist glasses for these events.
Hi,I am deciding to purchase a camera to start my photography journey. I was considering either the lumix gx80 or canon r50. I would appreciate any advice on which you would recommend. I hope to use this as an everyday camera for travel and street photography. Thanks :)
I love this video. It's brilliant and is an awesome guide both for new and experienced micro 4/3 users. However my first and favorite camera wasn't listed - the GF-1. P.S. Please do a lens ranking next!
Out of curiosity, I’m wondering why you had the G7 ranked higher than the G80? They’re very similar in size and specs, but the G80 has IBIS, is weather sealed, doesn’t have an anti-aliasing filter, and there’s no recording limit (or at least not on the G85). I love them both, but the ranking had me scratching my head. Thanks!
I am sort of past seeing a lot of videos at this point but I have to admit I found this video more entertaining and well done than I had expected. Credit were due! 🙂 Surprised you didn’t mention the GM5. I put the GM5 > GM1 simply because it has a functional view finder and some minor usability tweaks that make it even better, plus I always found the rear multi-menu wheel of the GM1 horrible as it becomes stiff easily, dirt, etc. On OM10.4 vs OM-5 -> the Tilt LCD helps a lot and the EM5.3/OM-5/EM1.2/EM1.3 sensor can’t auto iso to ISO 25600, only 6400. For some street night life work, yes, I want it to roll higher. I concluded the reason is that while the sensor refresh of the later cameras is faster, when you go over ISO 6400 the sensor refresh speed slows down to similar to the PenF/OM10.4/EP7’s, and probably that “state change” is not easy to make particularly rolling back and forth in a changing exposure from ISO 6400/to >6400. I still wish they figured that out somehow.
Yours and Tom Calton's videos really helped me narrow down a compact camera for bikepacking. I needed something light, small/slim, portable, and durable (if possible, weather sealed). It also needed to be operated one-handed as I wanted to replace using my phone which was a nightmare to operate with gloves while cycling. My Sony A7C would probably have been manageable if it wasn't also well over £1k, and I was worried it would get shaken to bits on my rides! I went for the Olympus E-PL9 - Tom recommended the E-PL7 and they were basically the same. I didn't care about contrast AF or low light as I will use it in the daytime, but IBIS was key, plus relatively simple/few buttons. No need for a viewfinder as it will be for photos while cycling or for more stealthy street photography. Unlike the E-PL10, price wasn't an issue as it was about £280 used (boxed with all accs though) including the kit lens, and more available/cheaper than E-PL8, likely because of the lack of VF. Thanks to you and Tom for all the compact mirrorless content that helped me choose!
Thank you so much for this video! I am very new to micro four thirds and want to buy my first edc with exchangable lenses. Problem is: I want to shoot video stabilized in 4k and need a view finder in the sun. Sooooo... Are there any other recommendations to go cheap other than the mentioned Lumix GX8? Any help will be appreciated! Thank you! Regards, Etna.
I chuckled hearing your opinion on the EM1x. You're young, never had to shoot with the F2as: That was a boat anchor. So was the F3 with a motor drive. From an ergonomic standpoint, I don't believe any camera body comes close to the original E-1. I also don't think a camera really "feels" like a camera without an external battery grip. So I vote for the EM-1 Mk III with a grip
Oh man! I am still using the Lumix G7 for photography and video. Some days ago, a family asked for my help to record a birthday party in a hotel. I was nervous, but when I edited the photos and videos, they looked awesome.😃 Excellent camera if you know how to use it even though its weakness that Emily says on the video. Hope, Panasonic would make a micro four thirds camera with the G7 size but with all specifications of the Lumix G9 II.😎
How can you leave out the GH2? The multi aspect sensor alone gives it a Bloomin' Brilliant. What about the GX9? Is the model number different in the UK. No, you had it, I bought mine on Amazon UK. It doesn't have everything, but it has enough, and it's small. Unless something new comes out, It's the camera I'm taking to the grave.
if you were going to document travels outdoors on a bicycle in all kinds of weather, and wanted good stills AND 4k video, slow motion and a sprinkle of astrophotography...what camera would you choose? olympus tg7? Lumix s5iix or GH9ii? an OM system OM1/5, EM5, Fuji xh2s?, Sony zv1,gx100ii, Xperia IV phone?, an Osmo Action4? a pocket3?...like what's the best swiss army knife camera you can think of thats fun, mobile with good weatherproofing and battery life?
I watched this video to see if the Olympus E-p1 and E-P3 were included in your brutal ranking. They were the digital micro 4/3 cameras that I tried to use with 14/20/45mm lenses in my wedding business. Loved the images from these cameras but could not depend on them because they broke too often.
Hahaha love both my OM1, OM1 MARK ll and also my EM1X. I started with the gm5, then got the gx 85, got a gx 9 on sale. The panasonic are good kameras but it's the olympus and OMsystem cameras I use. ❤
First, great video…second some bloomin nice photos and last, largely agree with your list though I find my g9 a bit too big for m43 and thus would put it and the G9ii in the bloomin brilliant category (different needs for different folks). On the OMii a bit more than a firmware update, but think your point is reasonable. Kept hoping LUMIX would add a small and light m43 once again, but they haven’t so an OM5 might be the ticket!
What would you recommend for hiking/backpacking. I do a lot of waterfall photography also and leaving my tripod behind would be awesome. If I could do handheld waterfall shots that would be great also.
Very cool and informative video. I went from analogue to digital compact to DSLR (several) to mirrorless (Fuji X-T3) and ended with an iPhone 13 Pro Max. Now my hands start itching and I want to go back to something with interchangeable lenses in the style of the PEN and the Sony A6400 (just mentioning the Sony because of the shape of the body). I don't want to go to a DSLR-like body like the GH-6 and the OM-1. I want to be able to shoot in RAW and I don't have a particular photography-style. I shoot street, landscape, portrait, city. In which direction do you advise me to search in?
I love your list. But... now months later, do you still think of the OM-1 Mk 2 as a "should have been an email"? Oh, and having gone through a lot of cameras before my E-M1 (OG) which I thought was amazing ... until I got the G9, which is amazing... but dang it, now I think I need a G9 mkII. lol
Hi Emily. Thanks to you I have the God tier Olympus OM-D E-M5. Like you I hate the menus but boy does it take lovely photos. Traded my GX8 which is a great camera but so far my results have been way better with the E-M5… I even got an honourable mention in the February photo competition!
I have a question. I have two older Olympus pen cameras that the onboard image stabilization has failed. I was thinking, if I put Lumix lenses in them (image stabilization in the lens) can it effectively take the place of the failed onboard image stabilization?
I owned an Olympus Air 01 in 2017 when the software worked. I wonder if it will work with the new OM System app that works with my E-M5 Mk II. Anyway, the Air worked great and produced images as good as the E-M5, since they have the same sensor. I used it with the Panasonic 30mm f/2.8 IS macro lens, and could put it on the end of a monopod, stick the monopod several feet off the path into the blooming flowers and get some good macro shots thanks to the lens IS and it was a fairly bright day, too. All without treading off the path. So there were some creative applications of the Air and it was also fun to walk around with just a Pana 14mm f/2.5 on it and shoot discreetly from the waist. On my channel I recently posted a video I made with the Air and the Pana 14mm on a high tripod, of my reaction to the 2017 total eclipse. It's the latest video I posted, in fact. Take a look if you want a video sample.
My only m43 camera today (after using many in the past) is the EP7, which I love notwithstanding some clear limitations. It is not my main camera, and I'm not expecting it to be my main camera. It is my travel carry everywhere camera. Doesn't come with an EVF, which is OK given the bright screen and its size (main reason for having it), doesn't have good AF-C, but AF-S is outstanding in most situations and in low light (better than Fuji, Sony, and the pre Zf cameras), has custom color profiles (4 mono and 4 color) that I can recall with the click of a button and that allows me to create my own styles, dual dials, and a photographer tilt screen that also allows for selfies. And it has a built in flash, which I totally use with my family. It looks good, it is pocketable with the Panasonic 14mm, IBIS is wonderful, auto ISO works great to values that are even higher than the OM5... Not much to complain, other than the slow start up after turning it off, and the lack of exposure compensation in manual mode with auto ISO (but the work around is not too bad, given there is an exposure lock button).
The E-M1X makes no sense on paper but when you pick it up the perfect (for me) ergonomics win you over. Love mine, and it doesn’t feel too heavy in itself.
Exactly true. So easy to carry and hold in spite of its weight, controls accessible in either orientation. Not at all discrete for street photography, but great if you want people to think you are an official photographer somewhere.
You could just get a battery grip for your existing body i guess. I enjoy having the Geotagging built in with the E-M1X and the nice feeling buttons. Would depend on price really. With optional grip you have flexibility. I upgraded from E-M1 mk2 and was worth it from that model, Mk3 rather close functionally i imagine.@@dontipton4570
I am glad you like yours but I did try it and I still found it too big for m43rds. The EM1X flopped in the market (note: that doesn’t mean it’s not a good camera for those who like it and fulfills their needs), and I don’t see OM Systems making a mark II of it. I do agree the ergonomics are great. I think using a low res outdated EVF at the original MSRP was insane. If you regularly shoot in bad weather with gloves, the usability is really good.
I was considering the OM-1 Mk2 but now I'm not so sure (I started with photography when I was about 16 with an Olympus OM-10 (I think, memory is a bit fuzzy) - there was no digital back then). I love your passion for the Lumix G9 II though and your passion for photography generally. Very inspiring. Thanks Emily.
It is. Built in GPS, the good sensor, great battery life, feels very good in the hands. Of course it's chunky, but you feel very comfortable holding it and using the buttons. 😊
The EM1X is simply too big to go with the m43rds ethos. I think she called it appropriately. It also was in a price bracket that put it dangerously on par with some APSC/FF options. This is beyond specs, and more of a pragmatic bottom line. The camera also flopped in the market. This shouldn’t read that for whole who love it it dones’t fullfill them but keep in mind the AF of the EM1.3 is as good or better, and the OM-1’s is better yet the cameras are much smaller (and compared to the EM1X MSRP, affordable).
@@Raist3db I think you really put it to the point by calling it "m43rds ethos". As long as you see the justification for using a smaller sensor in building the smallest cameras, the E-M1X is just a misfit. And many people believing in this made it flop in the market. Coming a bit late in 2019 being largely based on 2016 technology didn't help either. But M43 is nothing but a different compromise from the FF compromise, just remember that 24x36 is orignally called "Kleinbild" meaning "small frame". If this would not be true every pro would have to go with Hasselblad or even using bellow cameras with even much bigger sensors. Compared to its FF DLSR competitors in 2019, the D6 and EOS 1DX Mk 3, the E-M1X comes roughly in par or better except in high ISO picture quality, a substantial but also linmited advantage. A price of 3.000 € then was less than 50 % of them at that time. But the biggest difference comes with the lenses: A comparable set of my E-M1X camera with lenses (14 to 600 mm equiv.) MSRP total compares 3.400 € to 11.500 € for the same set of Nikon or Canon pro camera with their lenses. Of course the OM-1 is definitely a next-gen camera compared to the E-M1X but it also definitely lacks the pro attitude and in my opinion it unfortunately also fails to surpass or at leas fully catch up with Z9 and EOS R3. So, as I'm really convinced of M43 simply being the better compromise I have to hope that tide will be turning for OM System and maybe they'll even be able to launch a full pro camera again some day.
@@777hdn I can't agree that the EM1X was matching "on par or better" in general. And yes, all systems have their pros and cons, certainly. The pro of m43rds since Olympus and Panasonic both did the joint announcement was the smaller body/less weight. To the extent m43rs strays from that, it makes it tougher to compete, and I do think that's how 4/3rds died.
Thank you for your tip with the M5 vs the M10. I am an M10 owner and was immediately heading to ebay... discovering that a used M5 body costs more than I payed for the M10 kit. So I recon the M10 might be uninspiring and not very special, but it served a purpose... doing most of the stuff the M5 does.... at half the price, which mattered to me as cameras got ridiculously expensive in the last 10 years.
Great video, I have had most of the Panasonic cameras, loved the G100 but sold it due to the lack of Stabilisation for video and the 4k crop. I have a question about the G9 II, on my G9 I have tap to focus on the screen but I can't seem to find this option for the G9 II. Hi thank for so much an informative video. I am looking to buy a camera for everyday street photography ...Olympus EM5 mark ii ($499) and Lumix G9 ($899)? I am confused really like the portability of Olympus EM5 ii. need suggestion ...super confused.
Interesting to see that you place the G9 II above OM 1 camera considering that it has better video while having comparable Still quality...I happen to watch a RED35 video where the G9 II was called 'A jack of all " and thought that title was not justified...all the same I find very little of G9 II content out there on youTube ...am looking for feedback on the Birding front as I am looking to upgrade from my G85 with the Lumix 100-400 mm Lens combo.
I took both to Kenya in September if you haven't seen that vid already. It's called "g9ii vs om1 safari edition" on my channel. I also recently took the g9ii to Costa Rica and got some bird photography done. That place was so good for birds! I managed to get a bird in flight photo on a safari raft, one handed, going round a bend lol the af on the g9ii is so good (as is the om1, I just personally prefer the menus, usability etc with lumix)
There was a good review on YT a while back by bird photographer Mike Lane, comparing G9ii with the OM1 - he did find the G9ii a fraction slower to snap into focus than the OM1 - but this could have been cause using Oly lens, and before any G9ii firmware updates. I believe he still favoured the G9ii in the end - and has made other videos (that I haven't seen) since then using it.
@@MicroFourNerds That is really reassuring to know...Thanks for taking the time to respond...Yes, I did watch your comparison of the two cameras and enjoyed it.
What i really miss is the orange GM1 with the 14mm f2.5. I'll get it again later. Most of my gear was stolen, so i'll start again. GM1 in orange brings me such joy.
Thnx for the great video. Could you help me with this I have the opportunity to buy a gx80 with a 14-140 lens but im in doubt if I shouldn’t go for the Sony RX 100VII (400€ more). Would you say the quality is comparable? I would like to use it for surf fotography and just holiday pics
So what is your recommendation for someone who has only ever used an iPhone (but who regularly gets compliments on her snaps) but longs for a "real" camera to learn on? It needs to be rugged b/c I hike a lot, needs to be light (ditto) and doesn't need a ton of bells and whistles since I have no idea how to use them.
Thank you for this! I am a long time M43 shooter as well, have been debating to switch to a Sony Aps-C but my heart is still with Lumix. Been looking for an everyday hybrid camera with small lenses , and you seem to totally understand that! Your channel is GREAT! Could you do tier list for lenses? Ive been wanting to upgrade but overwhelmed by choices.
Which is the highest ranked/cheapest camera? i.e best value. A bit tricky to answer as used prices very but i'm after an everyday carry to replace a phone. I have considered an Insta ace pro as ideally I want something that is pretty much point and shoot and most my actual cameras struggle in low light.
I've got a Lumix g9, having previously owned a g6 and before that a g5. It was being able to record 1080p60 that pushed me to the Lumix line. I still use a gf5 as a spare/backup body as it's tiny, but am looking to replace it soon, so your recommendations have been timely.
Yay, that was fun! Experience and usage are wonderfully subjective bits. Articulating perspective can be tricky. Yours is wonderfully done. Like everyone else, I wanted more out of the OM-5-new menus and sensor from O-M1, which is why I did not grab one. I laughed, not hard, just glee for featured E-PL6. Indeed , the red camera is my casual camera partly because it seems so playful and works perfectly well with 17mm f1.8 lens. The "go to" camera has been an E-M5.Mk3 last four years. Never had so much fun or the solid track record for keepers. PDAF nails it every time.
Hi and great vid. I totally agree with you, but due to my own needs, there is one camera I feel I would put in a different category. I have (working as a professional) 2x old G9's (agree), 2x EM1 Mk2 (great work horse cams, both over 1 mil shots), a new G9II (agree), 2x EM10 Mk2's (I call my shutter savers as I picked them up cheap and they are handy, but I agree), a Pen F (agree), 3 EM5 Mk1 (agree and having them since release they will be missed when they die......soon), but my 2x EM1x's I feel are, for big lens balance, the dual batts and the cleaner handling (than adding a grip to another EM1 style camera) for fast sports etc, are the ducks guts. I would put them in the third tier (for me), good in some circumstances. I know they are big, but I have large hands, put big glass on the front of them (300 f4) and when shooting sport would always add a grip for the two batts, so they are the best way to do that. I also think that at $2k Australian, they are a steal. I do have an S5 and S5II to flesh out my video, but the G9II is the top dog and most fun to use. I just went S5 for better high ISO work and then scored some very cheap L mount 7Art Spectrum and IRIX cine lenses, then some Lumix primes, then the S5II on sale....... .. Sordid little story, I feel a little dirty retelling it. Cheers again and thanks for making me think!
Love the list! Some cameras I've had the pleasure of having and/or using, some not :) But quite an extensive and informative list! Kudos! One single thing though - the E-M1X is anything BUT a Crime against photography - as a happy, satisfied owner of two such cameras and making a living off of those cameras - I can't say enough about that model - sturdy, built like a tank, with great ergonomics and amazing reliability! It fits my hand like a glove and clients are super impressed by the overall look of the camera, even though I absolutely KNOW that this is a stupid thing to judge a camera by, Still, clients subconsciously want to feel like they're in the hands of a professional - and a big-ish camera means that for some people LOL Also, my 40-150mm is so well balanced with a bigger camera body 🫣
@microfournerds nice video! I am currently searching for a microfourthirds camera as my first camera to get into photography. I really like aesthetics of the GM1, GX800/GX850 , and the Pen f. Which of these would you you suggest for a beginner like myself? Also the the Olympus Pet series , I get confused a bit with all the different versions. How can a newbie navigate the sea of the Pen series? the EP , the EPL and the EP mini series and how they compare with each other?
Emily Hi....Liverpool Kev here...What a superb video....witty and genuinely useful from someone who knows what they are talking about......and often you cannot say that on TH-cam....I was pleased to see two of my cameras in the top league....GX80 and GM1 (Which I adore)......Like you I sold the Pen F.....Massive regrets....But.... to finance a Fuji X100V...another Rabbit hole haha...Thank you so much for your great videos Emily and obviously love the Liverpool Connection too....All the best.....Liverpool Kev
I just clicked on the video, because i wanted to know, what you think of the g7 and i was stunned when you started with you. I also think that you ranked it perfect, and i think that the features but also the low price is fantastic. Anyways love your videos keep on making them.
Interesting choices. The EM1X came as a complete surprise to me. How did I miss that? I want one now. My current favourite m43 camera is my GF6. Like a GF1 but with a flippy screen. Can’t decide between those two, actually.
You are so cool! Thank you for your channel! Just discovered it tonight and this is the third of your videos I've watched in a row. Keep up the amazing work. - A G85 and GX800 owner
hi Emily, that was a fun video, I think you were a little harsh on the EM10 mkii. It’s small light and great as an everyday carry. Coupled with the tilt screen and ability to program my sets to the mode dial is a bonus for still photography. I do feel that the hand grip supplied by Olympus for this model is essential for ease of use.
In defense of the E-M10 Mk.II I recently picked one up in pristine condition for **$180** and the amount of camera that is even today for the cost is insane. It’s just about 10 years old but it feels like it’s still a current-year camera. It has most of the speed, performance, and features of the E-M5.II, but is smaller, maintains a premium feeling build, keeps loads of direct control, and even has a pop-up flash. It’s a great camera to throw the 14-42 pancake zoom on with the auto lens cap and toss in a bag as an everyday carry. It can be had for SO cheap, it makes a great sensible companion to an E-M1.
It’s the camera that really made me love photography and solidify my joy of videography.
do you think lumix g3 is good?
@@freezerfridge7486 My first camera was the lumix G2. Worth picking up if you wanted that traditional DSLR style camera. Great camera and I was very impressed with the results. I've since upgraded to the G85.
Hi Emily… where would you rank the Olympus Pen E-P7?
Another vote for the EM1 line, especially the mark 2 with latest firmware.
The GX80 sells used for the same money I paid for a new one in 2017. Which tells you everything about the pent up demand for a new compact m43 camera.
I love the em1x also there are people who hate about it..
I took my GX80 on holiday to Costa Rica.
I found out why rainforests are so-called and that my “waterproof” backpack wasn’t. I ended up pouring water out of the camera - literally.
3 days later, I was back shooting photos with it.
Fantastic camera for the money.
I sold my GX80 when I upgraded to the GX9. Then I sold the GX9 to buy another GX80. Happy again🙂
@@snappychappyI did the same. I just preferred the feel of it - despite both being more “budget” models the quality felt more robust on the GX80
Hi Emily, new subscriber here and new to MFT after a (very) long absence from photography. Thank you for your content, you are an absolute joy to watch.
Thanks so much! ☺️📷
If that's not at least blooming brilliant I don't know what is😂
@@zachbenson9548 The titanium would make a nice collector item. I bought a 2nd hand E-M5 Mk II and very happy with the features over the original.
@@buggersofoz Yeah the E-M1 Mk II stood the test of time. Right now on the 2nd hand market it is great value for money (I could not resist it either).
The whole E-M10 series is definitely more suitable for hiking and outdoors, and when not, the E-M1 series (all iterations, including the X...) are more interesting and capable than the E-M5.
love my em10II
Absolutely agree, I use my em10 MK2 often, leaving my G9 at home
Also it's important to consider the price. When I bought my E-M10III I was beginning in photography and wasn't sure I'll be doing this for more than a few months, so I didn't want to pay twice the price for an EM-5 only to have a camera 30% better
@@baronnuuke7821well done!
Panasonic Lumix G1 should have it's own special life time award for being the one who started this whole mirrorless movement. I am a bit biased. G1 was my first system camera back in Dublin 2008 and start of my photography hobby, and i own and use 2 of them still :)
Me too. Then I upgraded to G5. Now looking at GX8.

WHY DID YOU SPOIL IT
@@Yahs232 Whoever reads the comments before watching the video itself is the one spoiling it all for themselves.
@@photographer8486 it depends on you, but do your research well and long before buying
Thank you!
To me the EM-1 II is the best 4/3 camera right now, as it is cheap, but packs everything I could ever want and more.
YES! I have upgraded to the OM1 but I still have my old faithfull EM1 mk2.
I second that. EM-1 II is the most bang for bucks if you want a serious MFT camera.
Thanks
Wow, you got a nice deal on that! I paid $510 or earlier this year for just the body, no lens and no extra battery
I totally agree! I love that it's a bit smaller than the GX8 as well. Just wish it was weather sealed. I think it earns a "bloomin' brilliant" 😁
@@MicroFourNerds We kindly request a reevaluation because the GX9 is an S tier for sure 😊
@@achrafmel Totally agree!
@achrafmel I'm going to have to add this to my shopping list aren't I 😂
Love the GX9.
E-M1X is a camera I kinda wish I had. The weight is unnoticeable in the hand because the ergonomics are so so good. Being a gripped camera it was never intended for everyone, but for those who appreciated it, there has been nothing like it, before or since.
I have it and absolutely love it
The M1x is perfect for me shooting aircraft . Big yes but ergonomically perfect even using it all day.
as someone who shot on 1dx's for years then picked up this bad boy... gosh i love it so much.
For me the Olympus OMD EM1 MK3 is my favourite camera all the bells and whistles and fast to operate too
i was gonna say, i felt left out as a em1 mk3 user hahahahaha amazing camera, light weight and very capable
Agree, had mine stolen and bought an OM1 to replace it. I still miss my em1.3.
My daughter uses mine for live band photography- it is stunning - so I had to buy an OM1 for myself
@@MicroFourNerds - I would love a video like that, especially now that you've been using it for a while now. Can't wait! 🙂
EM1.2 is my all time best m4/3. But, I am making room on my shelf for the G9ii while keeping the EM1.2 as my backup.
My first camera was the Lumix DC-FZ80 and quickly upgraded to G7, later bought LX100 all great cameras and then I sold them all for the x100v which I hated. Recently bought the GX80. Love MFT. Love the channels
I'm a photography newbie, do you mean you hated the panasonic lumix g100?
@@shirinn39 He hated the Fujifilm x100v.
Love my EM1X. Yeah its bigger but still slim and lighter compared to competitors. Plus its at an amazing price.
When fall and rain comes around here in Finland i am going to get one of those + 12-40mm 2.8 oly lens, propably from mpb. EM1X size is fine, i am 6.4" / 285lbs with rather large hands.
@@juhavuorinen6305 its a helluva camera at a ridiculous price. You can get one for around $800 US.
I couldn't agree more
I think you may have been a bit brutal on the Oly M10.
How is the autofocus? I'm traumatised by Fuji!
Thanks!
Same goes to me
Your love for the GH5 is exactly how I feel about my Lumix S5! Bury me with mine too please 😂 Great video Em!
Same! It's such a good tool
I am sort of past seeing a lot of videos at this point but I have to admit I found this video more entertaining and well done than I had expected. Credit were due! 🙂
Surprised you didn’t mention the GM5.
Thank you!
Regards,
Etna.
I think the gx85/80 ticks your boxes
I chuckled hearing your opinion on the EM1x. You're young, never had to shoot with the F2as: That was a boat anchor. So was the F3 with a motor drive. From an ergonomic standpoint, I don't believe any camera body comes close to the original E-1. I also don't think a camera really "feels" like a camera without an external battery grip. So I vote for the EM-1 Mk III with a grip
What about the Panasonic GF1, GX1 and the Olympus E-P5 and others in the Pen series ?
Oh man! I am still using the Lumix G7 for photography and video. Some days ago, a family asked for my help to record a birthday party in a hotel. I was nervous, but when I edited the photos and videos, they looked awesome.😃
Excellent camera if you know how to use it even though its weakness that Emily says on the video.
Hope, Panasonic would make a micro four thirds camera with the G7 size but with all specifications of the Lumix G9 II.😎
oh hell yeah, I'm excited to watch this one! no one better to rank M43 cameras than you!
Have you looked at the e p7 ? Whats your opinion ? I broke my wrist and need to go lighter si looking at options
This looks great. How do you make it so you are in the frame but smaller than the lenses you are describing?
People with attitudes like yours make the world go round. Love the vids!
Agree with much of this list, apart from the EM10 bit, love my MK2, still use it regularly. Image quality and build quality are 👌
I love your list. But... now months later, do you still think of the OM-1 Mk 2 as a "should have been an email"? Oh, and having gone through a lot of cameras before my E-M1 (OG) which I thought was amazing ... until I got the G9, which is amazing... but dang it, now I think I need a G9 mkII. lol
Day two of using the OM-D EM5 mark 1 and I am loving it!
I got into the system with an EPL1 and a week later an EP5.
I'm just a beginner, but I wanted to tell you that the photo at 7:08 is brilliant. Congrats! Also, this was an interesting video. I subbed. :)
Interesting, to me as a filmmaker, E-P7 is my A camera, actually with every new camera review, I am tempted to buy another one.😂
the Shot at 1:44 WHERE is it from?
I could swear I've seen the view in Call of Duty
Valetta in Malta 😊
The E-M1X makes no sense on paper but when you pick it up the perfect (for me) ergonomics win you over. Love mine, and it doesn’t feel too heavy in itself.
Exactly true. So easy to carry and hold in spite of its weight, controls accessible in either orientation. Not at all discrete for street photography, but great if you want people to think you are an official photographer somewhere.
I normally shoot an Em1 m3. Have considered picking up the Em1x to use with my 40-150 for sports? Good or bad idea?
@@dontipton4570 A friend of mine uses EM-1x with a 40-150mm f2.8 plus 2x teleconverter for motorsport
Oh Emily, the Olympus Em1x is a amazing creation with at the time Amazing dual processor autofocus. What have you done 😂.
When I see where some of the prices have dropped on used EM1X, I've been tempted to get it for when I'm doing nature photography!
If it has it please tell me how to enable as I can't find it anywhere.
@@MicroFourNerdsI preferred all the shots done with the O-M1 in that video
@@MicroFourNerds That is really reassuring to know...Thanks for taking the time to respond...Yes, I did watch your comparison of the two cameras and enjoyed it.
What i really miss is the orange GM1 with the 14mm f2.5. I'll get it again later. Most of my gear was stolen, so i'll start again. GM1 in orange brings me such joy.
I hear you on the EOM 10. Yes the 5 is the same but better. But also more expensive. I love my 10. One day I might buy a 5. But I'm in no hurry.
Is the GX80 still worth it? I can get it with the 15mm Leica lens for €600 and love the look but not sure if there are better options for that price
Olympus pl7 is a cool epic camera too , and gf3k small 12mp , epic look do to 12mp
Hey Emily you’re saying the em5 mk 3 has phase detect focus….. does the em1 mk2 ? Thanks :)
@MicroFourNerds, would love to hear your opinion on the GX9 vs pen-f, which one would u pick?
Also where would you have put the GF7 In this list?
I wanna start with landscape and wild life photography? Any suggestion to a newcomer who just take pictures with the smartphone camera?
Really enjoyed your ranking...btw, what's your favorite lens you use most often with your GH5 ?
Where do you rate the G90/G95?
Thank you for this entertaining video 😊
Found your channel when making my switch from FF to G9ii and have been really enjoying the content!
Oh and I forgot to add on the Fujifilm X100vi
Really fun video, Emily. Currently my only M4/3 camera is the Pen F. Love that camera…
Still Can’t decide which one to buy, Pen F Or EP7 😢
Interesting choices. The EM1X came as a complete surprise to me. How did I miss that? I want one now. My current favourite m43 camera is my GF6. Like a GF1 but with a flippy screen. Can’t decide between those two, actually.
Wow, some of your photos look amazing.
I had a E-M5 MkI, sold it and now rolling with a E-M5 MkIII.
You are so cool! Thank you for your channel! Just discovered it tonight and this is the third of your videos I've watched in a row. Keep up the amazing work.
- A G85 and GX800 owner
Have a GX85. Torn between a pair of lenses: PL 15 1.7 or Oly 17 1.8? …and… Lumix 42.5 1.7 or Oly 45 1.8? Thanks!
hi Emily, that was a fun video, I think you were a little harsh on the EM10 mkii. It’s small light and great as an everyday carry. Coupled with the tilt screen and ability to program my sets to the mode dial is a bonus for still photography. I do feel that the hand grip supplied by Olympus for this model is essential for ease of use.
Personally think the rating of the OM10 was a bit harsh but I like your honesty!! Would love a brutal ranking of MFT lenses aswell
