Batoning Wood With A Knife Is SAFE and Effective When Done Properly

  • There are a lot of misconceptions out there about batoning wood. It is NOT for splitting firewood. That's dangerous, and you should use a splitting maul in that situation. That said, it's perfect for making kindling at the campsite. 99% of the time you're going to have split firewood in a bundle, and in this situation, batoning is perfect for creating a pile on kindling in a short period of time. In this scenario, there is no need to bring an ax to the campsite.

Glad to see the hand protection. I've worn leather gloves for 25 years of bushcrafting, and never handle wood and knife without them. I realize everyone is different, so I respect that as well. Good quality on the video production side, by the way.

Beating a knife is stupid, make a wedge with the knife and beat the wedge, why risk breaking your blade?

Shouldn't you be wearing covered shoes instead of sandals? What if your knife dropped on your foot?

Don’t use a benchmade to do that . They only cover cutting. Esses is guaranteed no questions asked . I have the Spyderco Darn dao and would love to chop wood with it . But that’s my SHTF blade , and it stays in the safe .

Batoning kindling with a knife looks good. But you, and so many others, are demonstrating it with wood that has a nice flat bottom and a flat chopping block. In real life camping, flat bottom wood and a handy flat chopping block, is as rare as finding unicorn shit.

Batoning is stupid as it is unessecarily hard on the knife. It wasn't done throughout history as it is uneccesary. In 65 years I have never needed to baton wood to find dry wood or anything else. And that is from Vietnam to now. What it has become these days is an excuse to use a knife by mostly unskilled people. "Look at me I'm using a knife" or "boy this is great I'm really using a knife".
I mean if you can't even find dry fire wood how good are you really? There is no Woosis or whatever about it. It will also void the warranty on any knife out there (Buck, Case, Randall, and all the rest state it in their literature that comes with the knife. If you wouldn't drive you vehicle through the side of a barn as that would not be covered by insurance or warranty, you shouldn't be batoning with a knife regularly. Same principle, but if you just want to feel like you know what yoi're doing and show every one you can use a knife (albeit, incorrectly) go right ahead. Sheesh

Your experience should leave you less narrow minded. There are countless knives that are made to do this. They have 1/4 inch thick bodies for a reason. This isn’t about splitting your daily firewood with a knife, that’s ridiculous. This is about being in a survival situation and needing firewood. Know your tools limitations. I have a knife that’s made to do this and a knife made for knife work in my “bug out bag”. Obviously you’re not going to pack a splitting axe. Obviously you can pack a hatchet, but that takes up a lot more space and weight than a thick piece of steel with a chisel like edge.
      For example:
OKC Para-Pry Tool - 1074 High Carbon Steel - Fits in Pocket or Pack - Comes With 6 Foot Hank of 550 Paracord - Survivalist Tool - Door and Window Opening, Barrier Entry, Opening Manholes www.amazon.com/dp/B07FCTS7MX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabt1_28OXFb53H4TGG
If you’re in a survival situation and using your only knife to baton, that’s not a good idea. You can’t tell me however that the tool I linked is going to break or not split wood. I’d rather have that in my pack than a 2+ pound axe.

You cared enough to comment. The point is people are saying not to do it. People care enough to make videos and say don’t do it. The fact is with the right tool you can split wood, and not need anything as big as a hatchet.

@@Sheridantank I did. I expressed my opinion. What anyone does with it is up to them. I usually don't carry an axe except in the North. I have never batoned any thing in my life. No need to. That is travel around the Pacific Northwest, the deserts of Washington , Arizona, the Woodlands of Kentucky, North Corolina, Ohio, Indiana, canada, the dunes and sandy country.ofFlorida and Vietnam, Thailand. Always found plenty of fire wood. I merely expressed my viewpoint. Any one is free to do with it as they want. No skin off my nose. I've had my say.
