Very helpful video. So basically, through body mechanics, you want your axe hand to be a consistent, up and down chopping machine, while all the action of forming the work takes place by moving the work itself. Akin to a blacksmith working hot steel under a hydraulic hammer.
Holy cow this was helpful. I've been killing myself fighting and forcing the axe, rather than relaxing and letting it do the work. That axe looks so much like one I got from a U.S. smith Joel Nowland.
I have never done anything like spoon carving before and recently have made the decision to start. This video was very helpful in learning the mechanics of using the axe. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
Great video with good info and advice! Some first aid advice: in the event of a bleeding injury first elevate the injury above the body (lying down is a good idea, it prevents blood draining from the head which can lead to passing out) and apply firm pressure around the wound, this can often stop blood loss and can save lives. In the event of a blood spurting injury that means you've hit a major blood vessel, apply the tournequet and lie down, elevate and apply pressure if bleeding continues. Using a tourniquet on minor wounds can cause damage if blood the blood supply is prevented for too long, so better to use elevation and compression unless it's a life critical 'bleeding out' situation. But far better advice is to heed the safe practices in this video, and if a carving session isn't going well stop immediately. Maybe you need to resharpen ,maybe it's a gnarly stubborn piece of timber, maybe you're tired, maybe you're having a bad day or maybe it all of these things or more. If you walk away you can take time to consider a solution. If you carry on and start getting short tempered your bad day could get a whole lot worse (I've been there, done that and cut clean through to the bone, I really don't recommend it!).

There are SO many videos saying "go get an axe and start making spoons" - with some sketchy axe-swinging examples. This is a clean, clear description of how the axe SHOULD be used - thank you. I'm still at the knife, hook, and bandsaw phase. Maybe next year I'll think about starting up with the axe... (a big investment in $ and space and time to learn properly!)

@@richardkunicki5684 yep, as I mentioned in the video, you can absolutely have a small block mounted on 3 legs if you wish. It’s not as stable and it doesn’t absorb the impact of the axe as well, but for most people it’s more practical as not many people have access to such large hunks of wood! It’s absolutely an acceptable alternative though :)
Hey :) a hatchet is for splitting kindling for a fire. Often used around a camp. This is a carving axe as it has a different bevel, not designed for splitting and instead for carving :)

Hey :) it’s a Hans Karlsson Slojd Axe. I’d suggest a cheap, light, store brought hatchet that you sharpen well!

A file is probably the best then sharpen it afterwards :)
