I’ve never seen it done this way, it looks like you have more control of where it splits and it’s much safer if you’re far from any medical assistance.
I've been splitting kindling from the side for a long time, but usually just whack it. Easier to miss sometimes, and the kindling tends to fly all over the place. This method looks a lot better. Aim first, then boom.
Taras, Enjoyed the video but I thought I wouldn't have a use for this technique. Today I was making carrot strips and tried it on the carrot. Works great!!!
taras there is another way, u put the hatchet to the top of log and hold both and hit the log in the wood but just a bit so the hachet is stuck and then u can just swing it (it gives more accuracy f size)
Thank you my friend another great video I have been splitting it the down way all my life and have been very close to injury your way is simple but safe thank you from n Ireland 🙏
Well you have been watching videos, you're learning well, Now try showing that with out that large stump to work on, it is all different story my friends
you ever split like that and well your holding the bottom it works loose and hits you? I never split like that. But it just looks like it could happen pretty easy.

Just cut a section of my palm open it will heal but lesson learned

You can do the same by just offering the axe head to the raw end of the log and gently tap the log and axe together downwards.

You should try batoning with a large fixed blade knife (I use an Ontario RTAK.) I tried it once and haven't used a hatchet since. Love your videos!
