  • Don't Kill Your Knife.!
In this video I show How To Baton And Split Wood Without An Axe Or Knife.
Basic Bushcraft Skills For Prepping Or Survival that we should all know.
This simple method will allow you to batton and split wood with ease each time.
No need to bash the crap out of your knife or even use an axe.
Wood splitting is a basic bushcraft skill that will give you fire wood for camping, when out practicing bushcraft, prepping or survival skills.
As firewood is so important when out wild camping, and even more so in a bugout situation, wood battoning needs to be a simple process, using simple tools where you can.
Try not to batton wood with you knife if possible. Although gathering camp wood and wood splitting for firewood is quite essential, so is your survival knife, and snapping the blade would cause serious problems in a bugout, survival or SHTF situation.

"Save your tools" - that's all there is to say. Lots of people with broken knifes out there. Thanks for showing the right way.

wow, great idea! So no need to carry an axe in a survival scenario, just a pruning saw.

      Hi Carl,
      Fully agree...!
The only time I batton with my knife is for small kindling.

Isn't whittling harder on your knife's edge than batoning? Don't get me wrong, couple swipes with a carbide sharpener and you're back to it. But if you don't have a sharpener...

Are some kinds of deadwood hard enough to make into a chisel? I’ve tried it but the chisels just busted. Did you cut ur chisel from a green branch?

What if I don’t have a saw? Or a knife… or an axe. Or any wood/trees. And no hands?? What then, huh?

There is nothing wrong with batoning, so long as you are aware of the capabilities of your knife, the thickness of the wood, the type of wood, and how knarled it is.
I have seen people trying to use their axe to split down wood into very fine pieces and nearly taking their fingers off.

Also sawing towards your hand is not smart either, a saw will not be able to dismember a finger or hand like an axe can, but it will give you a nasty cut and depending on where your hand is potentially sever an artery.

      Hi Fenrir,
Yes, I do agree, this type of sawing action is not common practice.
But like most things, when done with control, you can eliminate most dangers.
From my part, a more secure method would of been to put my foot on the wood instead of my hand.
      You make a good point.
      All the best,
      Steve

      Hi Fenrir,
Know your abilities and the capability of your tools.
Far to many people try to batton thinking their knife can cut anything!!
      All the best,
      Steve

There's a very safe technique to make very fine pieces of kindling with an axe. Don't hit the piece of wood vertically. Instead drive both the axe and the wood Horizontally against another log. Keeps your fingers safe when doing super fine pieces.

I think you can do it yourself, just watch and learn from Woodglut.
