XDD. I have a friend that quite a similar confession like that. Me and my other friend were peeping while my friend Jerry (fake name) got confessed to by a athlete club girl but she's.... flat and... muscular.... worse of all, she looks like a guy and has quite a low tone voice. Jerry fainted in front of her right after she confessed her love to him in a loud voice. She even try to wake him up by using mouth to mouth technique from the CPR emergency rescue course that we had to take. We were shocked and ran over to save with a excuse that Jerry had a "seizure" to safe guard his first kiss.... LOL.... it's still so funny now as I reminiscing it.

I have a funny (creepy?) story of when I was in high school...
One day, I was with my friends at school when a guy I had never seen before approached me and asked me in a very quiet voice if I could go with him for a moment. He was like 2 years younger than me. Then, he gave me a paper that looked like a letter and run away. But it was NOT a letter, it was a drawing of me!
The drawing was very good with a lot of detail. I was kind of flattered because the resemblance was astonishing and you could see the effort, but it gave me a weird feeling because he draw me wearing something like a very sexy warrior armor. Like what you would see on a videogame. I was sooo ashamed! hahaha
Naturally, since they were with me, all my friends saw the drawing and I was laughed at all day.
I tried to look for him, but I honestly couldn't remember his face. Everything happened so fast.
A few weeks later, I received another one on my locker and kept receiving them every now and then... All of them good but weird. hahah
I don't know if he had pictures of me or what. I still have them 10+ years later... but I never knew who he was. I wonder if he is an artist now... or a serial killer. :P
I'm from Mexico btw. Sorry for the long comment. :)

In france confessing to someone is seen as something a little childish and we never really ask "tsukiattekudaisai". After 3 dates a couple kind of automatically becomes official. But because we never clearly ask someone to become our girlfriend/boyfriend and sometimes it can lead to HUGE misunderstandings lol

It seems to be the case here too in Spain. I think i actually prefer our way of handling relationships than the japanese way, how would u know if you want to actually go out with someone you dont actually know that well? It seems that the act of making things official has less thought put into it (but at the same time they make a bigger ritual than us)

In Brazil, we usually make out before confessing our love lol. But even if you make out with someone, that doesn't mean that you love them. And also, usually we'd spend some time knowing each other (doing all the stuff you'd do with your lover lol) but still, no commitments were made, and then if you fall in love with the other person, you can say "let's date" or something like that. Japan's love confession culture is so cute, here its kinda hard to find this "pure love" concept. Love from Brasil 🇧🇷 あなたの言い方はめっちゃわかりやすいよ〜

Those letters are so cute! I can’t imagine how nerve wracking it is to confess if you don’t know how the other person feels...
In the US you usually go through a phase called “talking” where you go on dates, spend a lot of time texting or hanging out in person while you decide if you really like each other. It’s super common to hear girls say “oh, that’s guy I’m talking to” or “We’re just talking” if someone asks if they are a couple. It can get confusing the longer it goes on though!
I once had a boyfriend that never asked me to officially be his girlfriend, so although we spent every day together, I never realized we were actually dating! I eventually got angry with him and yelled “Why won’t you just ask me to be your girlfriend!?” He was super puzzled and said “You sleep at my apartment almost every night, what did you think was going on here?” 😂 He never officially asked, but after that I realized we had been a couple the entire time.

American girl here. Learning about Japanese love confession in this video made me think that while it's not typical, it's possible an American man would "confess," but only if he knew the girl well, probably for years as close friends, and neither had brought up the subject of love over that whole time period. It might have almost happened to me once. A close friend really looked like he was starting to confess, he had that look in his eye, but it was so screaming-awkward that I just kissed him to make him stop talking. It all worked out ok.

Sometimes the couple have a tacit understanding that they’re going out w/o having to verbally say it. Other couples would need/want that straightforward communication, otherwise it can lead to misunderstandings. I'm an American female. There's one confession from high school I remember quite fondly. Early one morning before practice, I left the restroom and this girl walked up to me. I considered her a friend even though we didn't talk much. She told me she liked me and I said I liked her too, she was so happy and asked "do you want to go out?". But I said no really quickly, because I didn't even realized she was confessing. At the time I felt really confused because it seemed out of nowhere to me. Months later towards the end of the school year, she came up to me again and asked if I wanted to go out with her. I smiled and said thank you but no, then she leaned in and kissed me by surprised and ran away.

I just realized that the traditional way in the Philippines is soo hard for the boys.
First: they have to confess their feelings for you either through letters that they have to give secretly or through someone who personally knows the girl. Girls don't really do the confessing, but they usually give hints if they like you.
Second: After confessing, the boy will have to do a series of courting or "panliligaw". They have to woo her with words, poems, and more letters! And then when there is a positive chance about it, at one point, the boy will sing a serenade in front of the house of the girl. We call this "harana". He would stand outside, probably with his mates who knows how to play and the boy will sing (regardless if he actually knows how to sing). The girl watches from inside, possibly along with the her family. After harana, boy will recite a poem or do another confession or any message to the girl in front of the family who are eavesdropping. At this point, he might be expecting an answer this time or if he thinks he has to do more panliligaw, he might just run away and continue on about the long process. Sometimes tho, the father of the girl will ask the boy inside. His mates will leave him and wish him goodluck 😂. The dad will talk one-on-one with the boy. The girl won't even be allowed to see the boy. So man things that could happen after this. The dad may even discourage the boy. But the boy may prove his feelings for the girl despite it.
Third: After the long process of panliligaw and the girl says yes, then you're FINALLY dating. The boy is still lowkey expected to show signs of affection as he did in the stage of panliligaw. Marriage is expected, btw 🤣.
Anyways. There are some who still practices that BUT very rare. Now, it's soo casual 🤣 my bf didn't even court me in the traditional way. What he did was he regularly sends food he cooked at my house for all my family to eat. When we started dating, he does the harana through phone call. And still regularly sends us food (gifting is most probably his love language).

During middle school, I was like Cupid for my friends. Every time they told me about a boy they liked, it would take me like two weeks to make them start dating.
I was chubby, so boys didn’t find me attractive, I got along pretty well with them, but I wasn’t the type of girl they would fall for, that’s why it was actually easy for me to match make them, my friends were pretty and I wasn’t.
There was only one time I failed in my Cupid job.
My best friend was the one who asked me for help.
I took like a whole year to try to make them end up together.
And it was actually that the boy fell in love with me, not my best friend lmao.

Here in Poland, everyone makes sure that friends to dating transition goes as smooth as possible, but of course sometimes you need to do something to stand out and become noticed by this special someone. Looking at myself and my friends we would stay sinngle all of our lives if it took so much courage to even start dating 🥺 so that's incredibly impressive in my opinion 😄

The video starting suddenly with gakuran Hitoki saying "Yo" immediately got me laughing lol, truly the Japanese middle school experience
By the way, I feel like people don't think about it much but there is kind of a confession culture in the US. It definitely doesn't happen if you go from "stranger" straight to "dating", which happens fairly often. Those are usually relationships that are, uh, more "passionate". But in cases when you're already friends with the person you like, particularly good friends, confessions absolutely happen. They're kind of necessary. I have even confessed myself (when I was 19 too, it's not just a middle/high school thing).
Some people also celebrate anniversaries, it's not uncommon. But many people also think that's weird, including me.

Hmm I tend to throw away old love letters. I feel like I want to move on, and give myself completely to the next woman without looking back. There is a Japanese woman I like. But she hardly speaks English. I know only a little Japanese. But before I left her in Japan I gave her my hoodie for her birthday. She has been wearing it when it started getting cold. So I guess that is a good sign! She must know I really like her, but confessing is a bit frightening! I must seem like a stupid foreigner without a good future plan :P

Loved this video a lot! Extremely interesting and insightful as to how dating culture works in Japan. I really love the culture of communicating one's feelings through letters, and the fact that we can save those letters is really beautiful...it's like we can permanently hold and keep safely a bit of the feeling that a person shows you.
It's quite different here in Sri Lanka...there isn't any specific culture of exchanging letters. Dating usually happens when a person you've known for a while confesses and this is usually from your circle of friends or classmates or other classmates. In university or work places too it's the same. The main thing here is that it always starts out as friendship in the beginning. The guy or girl will directly confess or a friend will help them get together. Personally, I've had few people who confessed after being friends for a while but I had to reject them and although I had no issues staying friends with them, they kind of moved away from me after confessing. So it's really sad for me when someone I think is a good friend confesses suddenly because it affects our relationship. However, there are a lot of exceptions too. People whom you meet on buses will ask for your number, sometimes even in the streets saying they want to be friends but usually the intention is to confess, and it's guys who normally do this. And there are people who sit next to you and recite their own phone numbers. This is hilarious when it happens. Anyway, it's uncomfortable when these scenarios happen. Normally girls ignore or turn them down politely or outright get mad at them. Other than this, back in grade 3, I and my best friend always exchanged letters saying we loved each other and would be best friends forever. We lost contact after grade 6 as I had to move countries and I've never exchanged letters as such with anyone after that. I kinda miss those days, because I love writing and a letter is like a gift, especially those that has the writer's feelings poured into it.
Thank you for sharing with us your wonderful experiences!

Vamos a cumplir 9 meses juntos

In Mexico, at least in my experience, confessions through letters were common from elementary through middle school, and (I think) mostly by the girls. Yeah men would try to confess directly. In highschool and later I think in most cases it they would ask directly or by a text message. But it's more common to approach the group of friends the girl hangs out with and check the chemistry before a confession. Friends groups in Mexico can be quite large and diverse, so you might ask a friend in common to organize some activity or at least become acquaintances first.
Also, I think it's not that common in other countries outside of latinamerica, but is quite common your girlfriend meeting or and hanging out with your family on some events! After University weddings become common and is better if you have a partner to keep you company, since they tend to become big and might take a few hours of your time. So is not rare to even bring some trusty girl-friend (or your actual girlfriend). The thing is, shit happens and we all know it and we don't take it so seriously if the family meets your "friend".

I’m from the U.S. and from my experience, I’ve had guys mostly send me letters while I was in elementary and middle school. Of course, I’ve sent letters to guys as well. Sometimes they’ll write back to your letter or they’ll just talk to you directly the next time they see you. In high school I didn’t really date, but I’ve seen people flirt with each other until someone confesses. Also, sometimes they had their friends ask their crushes if they liked them before deciding to confess or not. In university, I’ve had guys tell me directly that they like me. Being a young adult, I prefer to say it directly or the guy because I think it’s more meaningful to say it in person and it’s straightforward. Guys can give mixes signals sometimes and being direct is best for me so that I can know clearly if they’re interested or not. I used to be scared of rejection as a kid, but now I think I handle rejection well if it happens, lol

Trueee, I’m also happy that someone confesses directly
On the other hand, I understand that it needs some courage because it's easy to get trauma from the experience as you said

it's so sweet giving love letters like that,I would love to receive one but I confess that the fear of being rejected would make me not have the courage to give one to someone

In Philippines, when 1 confesses and the other feels the same way they go through the 'mutual understanding' stage where there is no commitment but they exclusively flirt or it may be courtship when a guy tries to win a girls love before it becomes official.

I'm a Chinese girl who immigrated to the U.S. when I was young. I grew up watching anime, so I definitely think I was heavily influenced by Japanese culture when it comes to romantic relationships, although I think Asian countries in general are very similar in idealizing the "aimai"/ambiguous phase of the relationship a lot. In high school, my close friend and I were in an ambiguous relationship, and before we graduated I decided to actually confess. Since I was too shy to confess in person and also felt like I couldn't possibly convey all my thoughts eloquently, I wrote it in a letter and emailed it to him. As a nerdy kid I also wrote it in essay format so that in case he opens it in the library, no one will think it's a love letter! He turned me down though since we were going to college soon and he didn't want a long-distance relationship.
Afterwards, in college, I met my current boyfriend. At our school, we have a quirky tradition in which you can send letter to friends and classmates on Valentine's Day, and hire a person dressed as a ninja to deliver it dramatically to them in class! So I sent him one of these letters in which I wrote about how much I appreciated him and liked hanging out with him, without actually outright saying I liked him. I also sent letters to all of my other friends partly to cover up the fact that this was explicitly romantic, since I wanted to leave it open to interpretation. I think he got the message though and eventually confessed to me while we were hanging out! Nonetheless, the beginning of our relationship was a bit rocky since we had different expectations of what dating meant - I wanted a kind of anime-esque relationship where we develop feelings slowly over time, but he was a lot more American haha. Nonetheless, after my experience in high school, I had also learned to be more straightforward with my feelings too, so I think we met at a good time and was able to compromise.

In the UK we don't have confessions, but when I taught in Korea the students were my age and I had a lot of joke confessions from them. The most surprising was when they made a video with their class about how much they loved me and showed it in front of 250 people... I didn't even know their name.

When I was in middle school, there was this Senpai I always admired. Senpai was very cheerful, creative and the first time my heart felt like it was beating - it was when I saw Senpai did a dance on stage. I tried to get close and so we got along very well. Sometimes we fought like any other juniors and seniors.
I forgot when it all began but before Senpai left, she left me a letter and a key chain. Senpai had inspired me to be a graphic design since I love to draw a lot.
Sadly we kinda lost contact 😅 but I still kept the letter anyway...
