Personally, I like describing the guys I like as “cute” because I feel it represents a combination of being attractive, but also seeming to be a nice person along with that.
There are people who are physically good looking, but seem like they could easily be mean or moody, harder to talk to, or as if they don’t care about the feelings of those around them etc.
They’re not cute. Cute guys are nice guys. Usually they smile more and show their feelings more and are friendly and are able to be friendly without having to be flirty, so it makes it easier to approach them as a girl. Or if they’re shy that can be very cute as well.
Admittedly, usually they aren’t the toughest and “manliest”, but they don’t need to be feminine or timid necessarily. As long as they’re kind and also good looking, chances are, they’re pretty cute.
So “cute” describes both an attraction to appearance and character, while “handsome” is only appearance and “cool” is mostly character or behaviour or style. And you can think someone is cool without liking them as a boyfriend.

In English, we use “cute” for both appearances and personalities just like in Japanese. But, I think we use cute way more towards men than ppl do in Japan. I rarely ever call a guy “cool”. If I think he has 魅力 then I’m either calling him “hot” or “cute”. “Hot” ends up having a little bit of a more wild tone which is why I think most people end up using cute.
Here’s an example of how we use it to describe a man’s appearance.
A: What do you think of that guy doing push-ups over there? Doesn’t he keep looking this way?
B: Well he’s kind of cute. Do you think I should go talk to him?
A: Yes!! Omg, go go go!
The cute here doesn’t mean that he looks childish or like a girl, it just means that he looks attractive. “Cool” actually feels more 微妙 to me and “hot” might come off a bit too strong. If we say “hot” we are like seriously dying because he’s so attractive lol.
Here’s an example of how I use cool.
A: Oh, I hear Jamie likes you.
    B: Oh really?
A: Yeah. How do you feel about him.
    B: I mean he’s cool.
In this case, B has like no interest in Jamie and is likely to reject Jamie if he ever asked her out. I know かっこいい is used differently than “cool” in English, but this might be why at least I don’t use it much in Japanese. I rarely complement a guy’s manliness or coolness so I don’t use かっこいい often.
My go to words are cute, hot, and sexy, and as the last two can be a bit much I end up just saying かわいい in Japanese 😂
Other ppl may be different, but this is generally how I am

    • @strangepotato6330
      @strangepotato6330 3 ปีที่แล้ว +160

I thought about it again and I do use cool if let’s say someone tells me they can do a backflip or something, but I would then use すごい in Japanese as opposed to かっこいい

    • @ancientpeople3861
      @ancientpeople3861 2 ปีที่แล้ว +97

      Mr./Ms.@@danielap548
Hi🙌 Post Positional Particle is a Japanese grammatical term.
It's one of the particles. And It's used at the end of a sentence or phrase to express the feelings and attitudes of the speaker.
Judging from your channel, are you a Spanish speaker ? If not, I am sorry...but if so,【¿eh?】can be a comparatively similar example although 【¿eh?】is Interjection, not Post Positional Particle.
      Spanish Example :
[Llegan a la mitad de la calle, Alicia se detiene.]
Alicia: Bueno, ya hemos llegado. Gracias por la cartera, 【¿eh?】
Whether【¿eh?】is used or not, it makes sense. But by using 【¿eh?】, this sentences can be more meaningful.
(※ I'm not a Spanish learner, so if I have some error, I am sorry.💦)
As I said, 【¿eh?】is Interjection, not Post Positional Particle. However, I think they have in common in that both can express speakers' feelings.
There are many Post Positional Particle in Japanese language. Mr.Onomappu uses neutral and kind Post Positional Particle, so he is kawaii.💓
Thank you for reading my long sentences ! 🥳

To me, calling a guy “cute” can mean their personality is endearing and/or they’re handsome and has a smile that makes you want to smile. If I saw a very serious looking guy who was attractive, I wouldn’t really say he’s cute because he’s not emanating that positive, kind energy that someone like you does.

It depends on where you speak English, but in America, "cute" can be used to refer to a very handsome man, a dessert, a two-year old or a situation in which someone does something very nice.

I guess the meaning's kind of similar in English? 'Cute' is most often used to describe something adorable/child-like, but when someone says 'that guy's cute', it takes on the meaning of 'that guy's attractive/handsome'. I guess it depends on context?

I think "cute" is typically used only by girls to talk about guys, whether to talk about their personality meaning something like "adorable" or "endearing" or about their appearance as "hot" or "handsome". I talked about this once with some friends, and I think most American guys wouldn't like to be called "cute". I think it's used a lot more between girls when the guy isn't around. Maybe it shows up on the internet more because of anonymity. I wonder if Japanese girls would use "kawaii" amongst themselves like "cute" in English, or not?

I think in English ‘cute’ can also describe the the way the person makes you feel rather than describing what they are like. Like a puppy makes you feel happy and fluffy inside so when I describe a person as cute that’s what I mean. In my mind when ‘cute’ is used to describe the way a person appears/comes across it’s almost a different word. That’s why I usually say ‘that’s so cute’ to describe what a person has done rather than ‘you’re cute’.

The way we use “cute” really has changed. I have always thought of it as a compliment though.
As an American who was a teenager in the 90’s I confirm I used “cute” to talk about guys, but once I said it to a guy and he found it offensive. It was as if I called him feminine or a baby. From what I can tell guys can take this as a compliment now. I believe the mainstream definition of “man” has changed and that may correlate with “cute” being more of a compliment. An example: some men still aspire to be a burly lumberjack kind of man, while others use skincare products and lip balm, even those who do both. And women like ‘em all! Women on the other hand pretty much always took “cute” and “beautiful” as compliments.
HOWEVER, everyone is different. Some men and women may still not like it. A woman I know says “cute” is beneath her. She expects “beautiful.” Also, she is a woman or a lady, but not a girl. I on the other hand always use the word “girl.” To each their own…
    ***So always know your audience!***
Lastly, babies and puppies are cute, but I don’t think of it as the same “cute”. Same word, different definition. As a native speaker we forget many English words have several different uses and definitions since we don’t think about it often. Cute guys/girls and cute puppies evoke two different feelings. 🤣 I would venture that puppy/baby cute more closely resembles かわいい, and man/woman cute is another word/definition entirely.

I feel like "かわいい" is a different level of cuteness than "cute" haha I use it with guys too, if they smile and look super cute and I want hug them (it's basically what you said, but I don't think of it as something bad), of course that same person can do something cool or wear something that looks really good and I say かっこいい instead.
I understand there are guys who may not really like it cause it's not that "manly" haha as a woman who used to hate being called "cute" I totally get the feeling, but now I understand that not everybody uses it in a way that sounds like you're childish and not to be taken seriously

Most of the time, when a guy uses the word "cute" in English, it has some sort of romantic connotation. "Cute" also doesn't always mean childish or fragile, though certainly can be used in that way. It often just means "attractive" or "endearing," regardless of gender, and I have absolutely heard girls describe very masculine men as "cute" (never to their faces though, I've noticed.) I think there's a lot more separation between the definition of "cute" that is used to describe a child or an animal and the one that is used on adults.
I don't often hear guys call animals, inanimate objects, etc. "cute"; it's not unheard of, but it's usually considered more of a feminine thing. (I am in fact a girl, so take that with a grain of salt.) Women tend to use it more willy-nilly to describe each other, objects, kids, or animals, but calling a man cute, especially to his face, is very often flirting. Complementing guys in general isn't much of a thing in America, sadly. A guy calling another guy "cute" is almost always either a joke or a serious romantic advance.
I think it's used a bit more freely online though, where it doesn't matter whether or not something is interpreted as flirting. I would say that most of the people in your comment section probably did mean it in a romantic way. That being said, you're definitely a cute boy.
