I enjoy these videos. They are so helpful to me as a first time gardener. Here in North Carolina I have a new garden problem …fire ant colonies 🤦🏻‍♀️. Anyone know how I can kill them without poisoning the ground? I also plant vegetables in the same raised bed.

@@sharonwright66 I have good news, and I have bad news. Good news is I understand your problem because here in central Florida fire ants can be a real problem, and I had a ton of them when we moved in. Bad news is the only solution I have ever had work for me is very long term, and it took about 4 years before they were all gone. What I did was remove all of the non-native plants that were in my yard (we have about an acre.) I then focused on putting native plants in, which attracted native insect and pollinators, and they took care of the ant problem for me - without any chemicals. I know I sound like a crazy woman - but I had tried numerous chemicals, and they always came back. (I drew the line at setting the colonies on fire, which I think my husband would have enjoyed.) I spent a lot of time researching, asking questions at different nurseries, and lots of trial and error. I live in one of those neighborhoods where all of the yards are acres of pristine grass....and then there's my yard. I am replacing the grass with sunshine mimosa, a native ground cover that can be walked on, or driven on, survive drought and requires no watering after it's established. It also never needs mowing. All the places I've put that ground cover in, I have zero fire ants. Zero. So good luck, happy gardening, and I feel your pain. :)

@@malliemargaret2895 thank you so much for the info. I think my neighbors may run me out of town with burning torches if I change the required Bermuda grass (hate it) for a native plant for the lawn. But I will look into some natural insects and plants that may deter them. Thanks!

He is a VERY sweet boy, and kids will be kids! I also was laughing when watching him behind her. There is an age when kids will do many things to get a parent’s attention. I remember so well when I was on a phone conversation and both my kids tried the same tactic (they are 14 years apart-lol) of being as loud and disruptive as possible! I don’t enjoy long phone conversations so it didn’t matter how long I’d been on the phone, 2 minutes or 10!!

HOW PERFECT! I have planting tulips on my agenda for this morning. (very small scale of course) Ibam concerned as we have very bothersome squirrels and I feel I need to lay chicken wire over them. Do you think the openings will be large enough for the bulbs to grow through? This project has much sentimental value so I hate for them to be eaten...they are a Susan G. Komen set of pink tulips in memory of my aunt who lost her battle with breast cancer. I will probably cry the whole time that I am digging holes. Gardening has always been my therapy. Thank you for helping so many others find there love in gardening!

I have tulip and daffodil bulbs planted in the same garden as my peonies, and I put down chicken wire to deter the squirrels and neighborhood cats. As soon as I see about an inch of growth in the spring, I remove the chicken wire. I don't usually see much squirrel activity after that, but once I cut things back in the fall, I put the chicken wire back on for the winter. That has been working well for me.

I have a lot of squirrels that ate my bulbs, I covered them with chicken wire and the tulips came through just fine. Another lovely morning with my friend Laura (I know I'm not the only one who feels like you are a friend). It is going to look even more beautiful in the spring, like an absolute flower wonderland. I can't wait to see it all come together! What time do you usually get started with your gardening adventures for the day?? You inspire me so much as a beginner gardener. What a fun person to have inspiring so many others. I don't know what I'd do without at least one video from Garden Answer. You and Aaron remind me of my husband and I. I bet we'd have a ball hanging out. Sending love from Southern Indiana. We garden in the same zone!

It really is great to see you including Benjamin in the gardening projects and especially encouraging him with positive comments, eventually when he grows up he will be a confident pro gardener and be able to help you out hugely! Especially with the end rest of your garden in the years to come which will certainly need it. I know when I was younger I didn’t receive the nicest comments when I had my interest in the garden! Can’t wait to see the garden next season!

I want to try planting bulbs for the first time after watching you. Thank you for being such an inspiration and joy to watch over the past couple years. I know I am not alone in that watching your videos has become one of my favorite parts of the day. Thank you 💕

Laura, you are a doll!!! The green belt y'all designed is just BEAUTIFUL! The foresight used in planning is breathtaking.
And Benjamin is quite the helper.
Though, I will admit, after hearing you say you augered the first100 holes, my mind temporarily went blank. 😄 Had to regroup.
Aaron's skill at making the final cut putting the vids together is amazing. You planting at 90 mph is
adrenal raising & entertaining all at once. Your AMBITION keeps my own imagination & productivity going. Y'all are the peak of INSPIRATION for us viewers.
THANK YOU for the JOY you bring us!!!

I'm just as excited for your spring bulb display as I am for my own garden! I planted 150 spring green tulips, which according to Sara Raven will naturalize and come back every year. I've spent a small fortune over the years on tulips that usually last just one year.

I have to say I love Colorblends combos. We only have about 5000 sq ft backyard so we decided a three year plan on bulbs would be practical for us. We have planted the yellow, white and now pink cubed combos in our yard. Our first year we did the yellow and white, second year we did yellow daffodils and small groups of Random tulips and this year we did the pink cubed, Thalia daffs And Virichic tulips. We also did just a handful of alliums and snowflakes and grape hyacinths. It’s been a three-year project but I can’t wait for spring. Thank you for inspiring our bulb journey and showing how easy it can be.

When you say “Aaron is working on something else “ I always wonder what he is doing 🤔 lol. I was surprised you let him dig holes on his own- I would be supervising. I used my auger for the first time yesterday planting Snowflakes and Delnashaugh daffodils! 🙌🏻 . It was so, so much easier. I did learn quickly how the drill can whip around-my finger is quite swollen but once you get the hang of it it’s fine. 😊

Tulips are my absolute favorite flower, and having lived in the Netherlands for the better part of a decade, they were in no short supply. Now I live in Florida, and it's just not possible there, and I miss having a garden filled with them. I'm so jealous of all your bulbs.

I cannot help but be so jealous of your ability to dig all those holes and not hit one rock! My husband and I planted just 250 bulbs this year and there was not one hole that did not have some size of rock! Your place is going to look gorgeous in the spring! I can’t wait for all those flowers to bloom!
