    Poor Laura, that olive! I love that you left that in for us to see. You seemed like a relatable Disney princess today-your critters following you around, your adorable son coming and going, the wonder at the olives and the crash after you tasted it. A fully enjoyable video! Thanks for sharing!

    • @PerfectPride
      @PerfectPride 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Anyone who says they’re “not a cat lover” just hasn’t met the right cat! I adore cats, have had four over the years, befriended many outdoor neighborhood cats, and have gotten to know different cats belonging to friends and family. Cats are as wide and diverse as people. If you keep your heart and mind open, you’re sure to meet a cat you love!

    • @rphjacobs9197
      @rphjacobs9197 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@PerfectPride ... oh I have had cats too!! Haha... with personalities as diverse as people’s.... but they have always had kind of a “take ya or leave ya” attitude. Not really a desire to please exactly. Dogs on the other hand never hold a grudge.... want to please so much.... want to be right by your side always and are faithful to the end. Russell seems to have those attributes as well and he is so cute! But.. on the good side.... cats don’t dig holes in the yard chasing moles.... they don’t jump on neighbors wanting a “pet”... and they don’t bark all night. I’ll give them that! Hahaha

    How many of you were saying, "No Laura, don't eat the olive!"
    The harvest would be less complicated if they were like grapes. Now you know why olive oil is so expensive.

    • @judyk2378
      @judyk2378 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I was saying no, no, no. We had 2 olive trees in CA in the back orchard and my Dad never harvested them. I asked him why and he said they have to be 'cured' first - I think that was the term he used - he was too busy harvesting all the fruit trees and mostly almond trees (15 acres); some walnut and a few pecans. We didn't have peanuts but someone at work once asked me how they were grown - I knew they grew underground; and they also asked how cashews were grown. That one I had to look up and was surprised at the process of harvesting cashews (and also how dangerous they could be if not handled correctly).

    • @mariand7

      So cheap here... Crete Greece...it has nothing to do with harvest or cure as in price. It has to do with where it grows and zone/climate. Here in Greece its the main tree so most everyone has olive trees to harvest and produce oil or cure olives. A farmer sells the oil around $2 per liter and around the same for prepped olives a kilo. But you guys get it much more expensive because you do not produce and because of shipping from mostly Southern Europe

      My mom used to cure them in three gallon jars, first with the lye, then the lye is taken out via water, then salt water cured. Each step takes days with daily monitoring with test papers. The rinse step is a daily water change until no lye comes out on the test paper. When she would test them she would take one out, slice down to the seed and then you touch the paper to it. They were the best olives, like a kalamata without the vinegar and extra oil.

    About the olives, my grandpa used to get some to cure himself, he made one batch were he kept the olives intact and another where he split them. The intact ones were a little bit more bitter than the split ones, so everyone in the family could choose depending on their taste !
    He used dill (both seeds and stem pieces) to season the brine and it was the best thing on earth along with my grandma cooking... 😏
    I miss those times, wish i took the time to learn how he did it, unfortunately he stopped when i was too young to realize and care...

      I planted one red canna, I purchased from one of our garden centers, in the ground around June (it was tiny, in a 6 inch pot with 3 little stems coming out) and had to dig it up just a couple days ago. I didn't think I could get it without my husband's help but I did and oh lord...I knew it had more than grew 6 times bigger but when I dug it up, I was surprised to see that I will be getting approximately 32 or more new Red Canna's next year to plant. That is of course if all goes well in storage. I'm storing them today.

      Do I need to separate my bulb 'mass'? I'm worried if I don't, they'll rot in the middle, but I'm also worried about hurting them trying to detach them. I'm bringing mine into my basement for the winter (zone 6a).

    • @laurelrosegardens6454
      @laurelrosegardens6454 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@dpstoops I don't separate the mass until spring. I just put the whole chunk in the basement in some peat moss and get as much soil off as possible but don't worry about picking it clean. It's much easier to separate the growth points in the spring when the dead parts of the mass have desiccated and you can just cut them away.

    Oh my gosh! Olives!! And even better, I got such a kick out of Russell lying in the top of the pot you were putting on the dolly that I laughed out loud. It's so evident he loves you so much. We can tell WHOSE cat he belongs to since his greatest joy is just being where ever you are Laura.

    This has been a favorite GA growing season of mine. A lot of variety of content, plus I don’t have a large yard for growing beautiful plants and I so enjoyed more things in pots. Not that I don’t enjoy the south garden etc….love it! But the thought of an olive tree in a pot excites me…but poor Laura tasting that uncured olive.😖🪴🥰

    I am from Bulgaria, which is a neighbor of Greece. Olives always have this taste when they are on the tree.😅🤣 They are further processed in the marinade to acquire the taste of the store, which we all know.

    I knew the olive tasting wouldn't go well! We pick and cure olives every year. You can also pick them green. Either way you have to soak them to get rid of the bitterness - also, slit the olive with a knife before soaking, or, as we do, we use a stone to lightly pound the olive to split, one tap with a stone splits it open. Benjamin was adorable as usual.

    Hahaha,I almost spewed out my tea when you popped the olive into your mouth. Then you spit it out and I lost it again. Too funny. So glad you did not edit that out. Russell reminds me of my Mister Tubbs. Follows me all over when gardening, has to be right there, falls asleep in the darndest spots. Benjamin was a delight today. He always warms my heart. What a sweet boy.

    Amazing root ball on that canna. Imagine what might’ve grown if you planted it in one of those big troughs you put your blueberries in! Didn’t you plant some at the college? Are you going to retrieve those rhizomes? Perhaps Rosa will save them for you. The olive experience was a major lesson for all of us. I would have done the same thing. LOL. Loved seeing Benjamin helping you, especially with the pumpkin. What a little sweetie. Looking forward to seeing Samantha Grace tagging alongside him next year. Thank you for sharing.

    Aww Russell reminds me so much of my girl, Summer. She always follows me around the garden, even today I was running wheelbarrow loads from the back of the house to the front and back again and she always pops up where I'm going. I love Benjamin's enthusiasm for putting the pumpkin in the coop, he had me in stitches just chucking it down then kicking it in 🤣. My parents have tons of olive trees where I grew up. The temperature there gets to 30 F several times during the winter. Olives also grew in the mountains where they received a lot of snow and colder temperatures. So your olive tree is probably benefiting from these cold temperatures, but I doubt that it would survive a zone 5 or 6 climate, so it is good that you moved it into the greenhouse. Olives are also evergreen. They are usually harvested between October and November when the olive fruit is at its prime, and before it receives a lot of rain so that the oil flavor is at its best and is not saturated with water.
    I am so Jealous! I wish I could grow an olive tree, but it is impossible in our zone 5 climate and no greenhouse. Enjoy it, and cherish it. Olive trees bring me so many childhood memories. The smell of the olives, and all the things we did during harvest season.
    Thank you for sharing ❤
    Edit: I wrote this post before I saw you eat the olive lol
    I was just waiting for the reaction as soon as you said I want to try one 😂🤣 they are pretty bitter lol
    You can't really eat them raw. You either have to marinate them in rock salt or cosher salt for a few weeks, or pickle them with a salt brine, some hot chili peppers, and some olive oil on the surface to prevent mold. That was pretty funny to watch. Sorry lol

    Good morning😀 Canna lillies are great for those of us who love to get a lot of bang for our bucks, they grow new rhizomes quickly. Most can tolerate moist conditions and thrive in water gardens. I also had a beautiful white Calla lily that was great in my water garden. If you haven't tried water gardening I highly recommend it, it's super easy and doesn't require constant watering like regular gardening!
