Hi. I start every morning with Laura and then head right to Aaron's father's sermons. His detailed teaching of the Bible, verse by verse, has saved my life! And he's so funny! I can't do a 1/5 of what Laura can in my own yard due to medical problems and disability, but I've been watching them since the beginning and love seeing their progress and changes they've made. And I highly encourage you to watch Pastor Paul, too! Be safe and take care!!

The hawk was likely a Coopers Hawk or Sharp-Shinned Hawk. Both of these acrobatic raptors are excellent at catching song birds. And are great pest control for rodents and managing populations of invasive House Sparrows and European Starlings. Such a cool experience. Good job! It means you’re creating a balanced ecosystem!

We occasionally have a Cooper’s hawk that will sit and camp the bird feeder. If I notice the birds aren’t out there for a bit I will usually see the hawk. Sometimes I’ll bring the feeder in just to break the cycle but those guys gotta eat too and it’s all about the balance in nature anyway. We love them all and it’s sure nice to have such great rodent control.

Laura, I may have shared this with you last time you harvested butternuts, but one of my favorite recipes with them is: roast a salted and olive oiled butternut, cut in half, on sheet pan face down with a little water until soft and caramelized. Use it to make quesadillas with caramelized onions, goat cheese and cilantro. It’s one of my favorite fall recipes. I cook quesadillas in olive oil with salt until tortilla is lightly browned and crisp. (You can sub goat cheese and cilantro if those aren’t to your liking) It was a Martha Stewart recipe. Congratulations on you beautiful harvest.

This is what I found: Heavy rain or over enthusiastic irrigation is the most common reason for butternut squash splitting. This extra water signals to the squash that it should grow more. The problem is, the outer shell has already hardened, so when the fruit grows, there isn't anywhere for it to go. It's like blowing a balloon up.

We have hawks here in Williamsburg, VA too. We also have lots of rabbits, moles and voles, which is why the hawks are happy here. One landed in my back yard and found lunch. I was only about ten feet away from it, and I was hugely impressed by its size, and eyes. It turned its head slowly to look at me as I turned the corner, and I can only say I would not want to be prey in its line of sight. I backed away slowly and let it enjoy its feast. Impressive.

That little piece of land with pear, rosehip trees and grapes looking vines remind me of Chateaus surroundings in France. Wild and charming. Love stone wall idea as it gives weight to your expansive and open property like the one by the new brick path you showed yesterday which is so gorgeous. The children are so adorable and loved Samantha planting Russel with mulch lol...

Good Morning! 🎃🍂🍁The grass is so pretty! What pleasant surprise, a hawk came for visit! From now until late Winter early Spring we have eagles around our farm & they sit in the trees around our house! They sit in the trees & watch me work outside, they are part of my wildlife family! Great butternut harvest! Love those chicken coop window boxes!! 🥰🧡🍂🍁🦅🌳😊

Good morning from Michigan!! You have an amazing set up there. I am SO jealous. I have never planted squash before and took a chance on it. I also planted two that I got from my garden center. I had no idea how it grew and planted it in my tiny garden. Let’s just say they completely took over. But I love it!! I had to string them through bushes and I have a ton that are just hanging out in the bushes. It’s kind of hilarious. I have about 15 with a bunch more that are still green. I’m not sure they will make before our first frost. But I am so grateful that put all the info you did about them in here. I was going to pull them after I harvested the ones that were ready. But I will definitely let them go and see what happens. Thank you. You have an amazing gift. 💚

Have you tried growing spaghetti squash? Wondering how easy it is to grow since my family loves eating that more than butternut squash and it's easier to cook with. Also a rock wall would be lovely, such a great winter interest.

Does anybody remember the small variety she grew a while back that didn't get that big? That gold mind in the back. Your grandchildren will have cool stories as well. 😎

Just wanted to pauze the video, and say how special it feels to see someone 'just like me' out there despite living in another country, never growing butternut squash in my life, dalia's, nor owning chickens. But the enthousiasm and look on life is so so relatable. It has nothing to do with the size garden you have (or maybe any garden at all) to be able to enjoy the video's you guys provide. Thankful to find a fellow garden, antique and nature friend that follows hawks and likes to discover the grounds around her with us.

What a harvest!!!!!! I had to pull my plants, they just didn’t grow much and never set fruit. I did plant them
From seed saved from an actual
Squash so it was probably genetically modified seed. Next year I will purchase seed cause we love butternut! I’m amazed at how much came from 2 plants, you have seriously great soil out there. Unfortunately I live on a sand pit .

Congratulations on your spectacular butternut harvest! The "scratch marks" look more like splitting from too much water to me, as opposed to being caused by some external injury. It's especially obvious on the ones with the large splits, or mouths, as you appropriately called them. Also, you can still use the green squash; just cook it the way you would a summer squash. Or, you can give it to your chickens. ~ Lisa

Oh my gosh a Stacked wall in front of the orchard would be so beautiful!!! It would make that orchard feel like an old world garden room and it would look pretty with the “shed” AND tie in to the main house and gardens with your new stacked walls. Oh I hope you do a stacked wall!! Haha so funny I even have an opinion or a hope for YOUR garden but I can just SEE IT! ❤️ In the end I know you will make it beautiful no matter what. Thank you for inspiring me (us) daily!!
