I played WA2 first, so I went back and played WA1 because I read it was better, and couldn't get into it lol How you felt about WA2 was how I felt about WA1, which was pretty dumb but I was also like 13
These reviews are so interesting because they make me see the games I loved as a child more critically. The music is sublime

OMG town to the western winds is such a great track!! I sometimes listen to it walking around my own town.

Thank you for reviewing Wild Arms 2, this is a childhood classic of mine and remember it so fondly (and at times not so fondly). I did try to play WA1 when I first saw it but I didn't know what I was doing wrong when I got all three protags to group up and somehow got stuck there at the beginning. I never realized WA2 felt easy, since I struggled really bad against the Kanon fights, but I guess it's also cause I didn't do a good job of managing their personal skills early on (as well as missing some crests for Lilka). Even if many may remember it as not the best follow up to WA1, it's always a fond memory for me. Ashley is my WAs protag of choice... behind Virginia :D

Man, the fact characters aren’t the greatest is a bummer, I always feel like heavy themes and ideas of questioning heroism are at their peak with memorable characters but the fact that isn’t really much of the case is disappointing, still sounds like it was handled well but still a bummer. Enjoyed this review a ton and very excited for Dragon Quest 8 next, always love me some Dragon Quest!

Remember that can be subjective. I personal didn't have a problem with the characters. And don't see how the original is different in regards to characters.

2nd Ignition is a hidden gem as a standalone. Compare it with the first, it suffers on many points lacking. But, I think WA2 still has plus point, especially on the plot and the protagonist's alter ego.

Researching the Wild Arms series since I was thinking about giving 3 a shot again and gave the video a watch. As 2 is the only one I played completely through, was a little surprised at the low rating, but I had nothing to compare it to and I'm probably blinded by nostalgia. It was the longest game I had ever played until playing games like Fallout or Witcher and I just remembered the hours I spent trying to beat the bosses, finding all the secrets, dungeon puzzles, and with the characters who I grew pretty attached to (again, never played WA1). Hitting the milestones like Karen joining after fighting her for so long, taking out the Muses, flying the jet thing, even encountering Liz and Ard were among my favorite parts. Emulator Zone and Millennium puzzles were the bane of my existence, but beating them made me want to cheer.
And the music. Such good music. Especially the one you mentioned. Every time I came back to the main town, it made me feel as if I had come home again, despite the hardships the plot piled on us. Thanks for making this vid taking me down memory lane.

  • @Fade2BlackSS

Been waiting on this one. I remember playing this game back in 2003 and enjoying it for the most part. 17 years later and I don't remember much from it besides some tracks that stood out (the one you mentioned being one, The first dungeon theme, the world map theme and that kick ass Knight Blazer theme.) And the beautifully animated intros. Oh...and that annoying ass octagon maze puzzle at the beginning of disc 2.
I think 6 is a fair grade to be honest. Its not a bad game by means just very forgettable. Like most older JRPGs, I feel like its the nostalgia that keeps some fans praising it. It just doesn't hold up nowadays in my opinion.

I was looking for an LP of this game after watching a recap of the first game the other day and I lucked out and found this video. I LOVE finding people who play the same games I did when I was young especially those who make videos about them. I loved this game and never knew there was a split. I ended up playing 2 before I just like I ended up playing Chrono Cross before Chrono Trigger so I guess the first game really was a better adventure but playing the sequel first made me feel different? I love WA2 to death but anyway this was a great review. I REALLY like this channel and plan to binge it now.

Haven't played the first game, but I did play this. Enjoyed it even if it's not a super original JRPG or anything. The game that got me into RPGs in the first place after years of brushing them off and thinking them as stupid. Also, dat soundtrack. Maybe my thoughts would be different if I played the first game. Who knows? But there will always be entries of franchises that click for some people and don't for others.

@@PelvicGaming Totally, it's the reason why it's so hard to try to be objetive when it comes down to this. Personally, Wild Arms 2 was the first that I played and I loved it, specially the way bosses are presented, I loved that so much and i thought it was so cool. When I played Wild Arms 3 I could not stop comparing it with 2. It's just the way it is.
Now, after hearing you talk so good about the first game... I kinda wanna give it a try now.

This is a game I need to go back to sometime soon. I loved the first Wild ARMs, but when I played this, I didn’t get far in it. It just didn’t pull me in. I can’t say what exactly it was, if there were just other games that caught my attention more or what. Maybe it was the characters, like you said, feeling lacking compared to the original cast. I know the scan for landmarks mechanic seemed tedious and unnecessary to me. Whatever it was, after multiple attempts, I’ve always put this one down. I feel like I owe this game a fair shake. I appreciate the detail in your review to give me some expectations going in. :) Great video!

I recommend try out Tenchu: stealth assassins if you didn't already. Just finished playing both from PlayStation 1, nice action game at the time of it's release, but the second, despite the improvements is just not as good. It lacks the amazing soundtrack and characters personalities...just like you I came out thinking " why this feels boring?" And realized the story wasn't compelling enough as the first one and there where no good soundtrack to keep me focused.
That said, just realized yours is the very first gamer girl review TH-cam got me. And I'm glad it did!

Wild ARMs is one of my all time favorite Playstation games, a game my older brother and I pulled our allowances together to buy and both loved it. But we never played any other titles in the series. As kids we received a Wild ARMs 2 demo disc in the mail for some reason. I think my brohter signed up for some Playstation Underground thing or something? Not sure, but we popped in the demo and I don't know what it was about it, but it just did not grab us at all. (all I recall is you could only play as Brad, I think? And there was a train. And lots of dirt) Neither of us ever actually went back and even completed the demo. Just something about the game that was so uninteresting. Doesn't sound like we missed out on much.

Seems the characters were a big issue. Personally I liked them. I liked that they were humans, gives a different flavour. And I loved the mains. How each explored the concept of the hero(cept for Marivel as far as I remember). And I liked the m personally and as a group, Lilka, Ashly, brad, even kanon. I have nothing against Tim but it's surprising cause I always got the feeling people disliked him. Like I questioned whether that was sarcasm. But hey I have nothing against him, I like him too but probably the least.
The review spoiled it but I liked the lady's plot or feeling of at least hurting the dude (since she can't kill him cause he's too strong) indirectly.
It also felt like a twist to find out who was behind Odessa. And the plan of uniting the world either through Odessa or the crisis they manufactured. It tied that twist of the bigger thread better than what WA3 did.

I agree with you about the second intro song though, that one is epic.

I played this as a kid back when it was released and absolutely loved it. I honestly don't remember all of it lol Pretty positive your review is spot on to what I would think now. For now though i'll keep my rose tinted glasses on haha Also as always you rock that purple like no one else!

This review sums up my thoughts exactly. The game did some cool things that improved on the original's foundation, but got bogged down by some pretty major flaws. Not a bad experience by any means. It just left a lot of room for improvement.
I hope you continue on to WA3. It is my personal favorite (the soundtrack is leaps and bounds better than even WA1), but again, it's pretty divisive, and I can understand why. At the very least, we're back to having some good villains (emphasis on "some") and protagonists with a proper localization, so... progress?

Wild Arms to Wild Arms 2 sounds like the comparison between Alundra and Alundra 2. Major visual change and an even bigger thematic change, and unfortunately all for an inferior game. Though, it sounds like Wild Arms 2 came out ahead in this case.

Glad to hear your feelings on this game. Always felt like everyone loved it, and I'd begun to think maybe I didn't 'get' why. Hope you get to try out WA3 sometime! It's my favorite, but I think it's divisive, too.

@@PelvicGaming YAY!!! And haha, yeah! Like, I tried so hard -- same as you did. I really wanted to like it. I'm kind of leaning towards it being the translation. Maybe there was a lot to the game we just didn't 'get' thanks to that? I hope that's the case. I couldn't even finish the game, tbh. :(
WA3 has a liiiiittle bit of that translation wackiness too but it's not as distracting, and the characters are a ton better (IMO!)

@@PelvicGaming Honestly, the villains are better, yeah! ...but that's a very low bar. I don't want to spoil anything, but yeah, it's a step up from 2, for sure. I'll say it feels more like 1 than 2. Like, all the places where 2 decided to try things that didn't work, 3 course-corrected for (well, not ALL...) ...and the music? Bangin'! Can't wait to see your review! :D

First of all, that is a great look for your hair; at first, I wasn't even sure if it had highlights or it was just some lighting trick. Of course, your hair always looks great, but I had to say it.
I did find the battle music when Ashley transforms into Major Spoiler to be very interesting; the... would you call them alarms? in the background sound almost like the PSG that the SEGA Master System and Genesis use, and that's very unusual. As for the story, I've always felt that the value of a Wild Arms story isn't how "good" it is, but how ridiculous it is, so I loved the COMPLETELY DUMB curve ball it threw at the end. The problem is stupid, the solution is stupid, but through it all, you're like, "Yeah... YEAH! LET'S DO IT!" It's like if Contra became a JRPG somehow. It's that level of absurdity that still manages to stoke enthusiasm that I've always loved about them. That said, Wild Arms 2 is the most ridiculous out of the ones I've played 3 makes you wait a while before that sort of thing happens, and it's not quite as crazy. As for the world map thing, I loved it, but you have to keep in mind that I cut my teeth on the original Dragon Warrior; I liked going back to the idea of "40 paces east; 57 paces north", and you have to rely on your navigational skills, rather than "There's a big thing over there" to find your destination, almost like a puzzle; I TOTALLY get why anyone would hate it.
