For me this experience was the complete opposite. I liked the first game, but I loved the second one even more. I never liked the control scheme of the first game, if it would have actually been a real turn-based system, I would have never even finished it. I would have returned the game back to the rental store. Second game I loved, tank controls did not bother me because I had already played Resident Evil games as well as Dino Crisis games. So the control scheme was right at home for me. I really enjoyed the atmosphere the dryfield area had as well as the giant epic boss fight.
I was one of many people who got bamboozled by "Parasite Eve 2"; and I played both games, in close proximity to each other, for the first time, just 2 years ago. I can't even imagine the rage of those who enjoyed the masterful first game, then were excited a year later for the sequel, only to find that, instead of improving upon the much-loved RPG gameplay, they just made it a RE clone. As for me, I had always HEARD of tank controls, but, not being a survival horror buff, I had never actually seen them before. Didn't even know what they were, really. Didn't matter. The SECOND I started controlling Aya, I went "...Oh no...This is it...This is tank controls......FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU-!!!" I don't know if our experience is typical of those who discover tank controls for the first time as an adult, but I certainly was livid! It seemed like something I would never be able to learn. Attempting that tutorial training room thing made me almost quit the game right there, despite having just bought it. The controls and the genre-switch took the wind out of my sails, and made me not want to continue...but after a while, I decided that, because I loved the first game, and Aya as a protagonist, I would force myself to at least try. The first hour was ROUGH, but, as I continued, unbeknownst to me, I actually started getting used to it. Half-way through the game, I was like "Wait. I'm actually doing this, aren't I?" After I beat the final boss, I went "...Did I just GIT GUD? Am I actually good with tank controls now?!" I have to admit, despite all my negativity, that was a pretty nice feeling. So nice, that I went right back in and beat the game again in "Replay" mode. Unlike the first game, however (which I replayed 3 or 4 times), I wasn't motivated to try harder difficulties to unlock everything. In the end, I enjoyed my time with PE2, but it still frustrates me that they didn't stick with, and improve upon, what worked the first time. Still, I was able to go into "3rd Birthday" with a buffer because of this, and approach that game as, mainly, a curiosity. I'm currently part-way through it, and again, I'm actually enjoying it (once I got used to it), but once again, the genre/control change is weird as hell.
I honestly preferred this one to the first. I never cared for “Body Horror” in movies or games. I’m squeamish about stuff like that. But I enjoyed this one in the series
You should play the Resident Evil games, they're really not scary. I mean no monster is scary when you have the firepower to separate its top half from its bottom half with your trusty shotgun. They've always been more about action than horror, and the early games also have some fun puzzles too.
I hated the laggy tank controls, but I liked Aya's ability set in PE2 better. I was okay with the backtracking, I kind of like taking systematic approaches, and it made sense to me that an area you clear once _could_ refill with creatures (or respawn if you will) . I wasn't able to defeat the final boss initially, gave up, but got it when I retried a year or three later (and found some online walkthroughs, the Brady Games guide was useless from that standpoint). I missed the weapons customization; PE1 guns maybe weren't "realistic" but _damn,_ they were fun! Give Aya a weapon with limited modularity, like what Vincent Valentine had in "Dirge of Cerberus"!
Sorry to hear about your burnout. It is understandable on why you would require time away after your experiences or else the entire genre becomes a pain to look back into. Thank you for all the heart you put in your content still, and I hope your time away brings you peace of mind.
Great video as always :) I think after your break you should play a game which you just know that you will love. That will get you motivated and back on track. Take care, looking forward to more great reviews~
I didn’t get far. The controls were so different from the first I found it unplayable and I was really disappointed. Edit. Yep, she nailed. I literally could not get past the first fight in the desert because the controls and everything she talked about so much. I was a MUCH BETTER gamer then, than I am now.
First off, I'm shocked at myself that I wasn't already subscribed, but at least I now have some new stuff to watch! As for Parasite Eve II, while the RE fan in me loves this game for having those mechanics, I totally understand the frustration from coming off a fantastic RPG like the first game and moving into a whole new ballgame. It always gave me flashbacks of the NES days where most second games in new franchises went in a crazy new direction because there was no franchise yet, so they could afford to do so. Either way, this was a great review! Also, I'm sure someone mentioned this in the comments already, but 3rd Birthday...urf.
Played through all 3 again a couple years ago and to my shock this was the one I found to be the worst. Yes, I preferred 3rd birthday (And that's an even worse sequel really.) Tank controls weren't an issue, but the camera angles mixed with enemy placement was a constant. Could rarely see what was technically right in front of Ayas face, and the radar only helped so much. Truly a frustrating experience.
I have only played Parasite Eve II and I love it. Then I kept finding negative reviews and I was surprised but it made so much sense once I saw Parasite Eve I and it's game mechanics.
I recently finished the trilogy. I had the first game when I was younger but it was hard and I couldn’t figure it out so I got rid of it. Big mistake. I’ve got all 3 now and beaten them. I actually enjoyed The 3rd Birthday quite a bit despite its glaring issues. But most TH-camrs and such that I see talking about these games just crap on number 2. It’s by far my favorite in the series. I had so much fun playing that game.
As an RE fan, and this being my first PE game, I loved playing it. I am still stuck at the burner boss but this game was definitely enjoyable. I guess it is more suited for pure RE fans. Square was competing with Capcom so I am sure they wanted to leave their mark.
Haven’t finished it yet, but I was expecting this game to be a step up in the gameplay department. I’m glad for no random encounters! But it only gets replaced with a ton of respawning enemies, the walking speed is still an issue for me, and there’s a lot of potential for this to have been something great, even with the tank controls. Unfortunately, with the many changes comes more problems
somehow i didnt know these games existed and now i really want to play them. i was 18 back then think i spent a few years drinking, socialising then came back to gaming after so that explains it first one looked good this one still looks worth a play
I had a rough time playing this game. I'm a longtime Resident Evil fan, and it still took most of the game before I could dodge attacks and get in my shots safely because Aya is constantly turning to face the enemy when locked on. And I stupidly left the grenade launcher behind so the final boss took me a whole day of attempts. The OST was a huge letdown too. There's a ton of super hard difficulties to try out and secret sequence triggers for a good ending, but by the end of the first playthrough I was done.
This is an exelent game iiiiiiiff you play it WITH SOMEONE WITH EXPERIENCE. My dad taught me how to play and that's really why I love this game so much XD. I basically have a personal enciclopedia.
Do you have a compiled list Pelvic of every game you have played or experienced like on a blog somewhere, maybe we can recommend you something good, to get you back on track with some A+ quality games. Get that positive energy flowing again. Hmm lets see, have you played Trails yet? Though a very large video game series interconnected, its probably one of the best in terms of overarching narative and has evolved extremly well over the years. Latest games being similar to like Persona 5. From the same developers Falcom of the YS series. How ever Trails is way more story focused. But again, might not be for you because its a HUGE investment of your time. Maybe Ni no kuni, probably one of level 5's greatest achievements in a long while. Or perhaps Lunar? The lunar series comprised of 2 games is from creative developers working designs who really put something together quite special in their translation with that one. But stay away from the psp port unless you just want to see the added prologue story because the port has stripped away alot of the elements of what made the PS1 remake the best. Anyways there is a few pics that you might be interested in checking out.
i loooooove this game i play this game first back then, maybe thats why i love this game more than the first oh and, if you thought PE2 is bad, try playing 3rd Birthday hahahaha
I think tank controls work well to be honest. Especially with a game where fixed cameras are present and the direction your character is facing is constantly changing from screen to screen, but I guess im just used to survival horror games like resident evil. From the way you and pretty much everybody else describes the parasite eve franchise I should probably play parasite eve 2 first.
Back in the day, I've played PE II first and absolutely loved it. It has unique style and look to it. Then I found PE I and didn't like it all. For me, the first one is a bit clunky. I didn't know that most people prefer first one to second :D You could argue that "well, you probably don't like rpg style" but that's not true. The first one wasn't just for me but I must also admit I'm huge fan of horror games with lots of puzzles in it. In fact, that's my issue with current horror games. They include zero super difficult puzzles. Oh, btw, fun fact I've played this in Japanese with zero knowledge in Japanese... :D I still don't know how the hell I reached the final stage but thankfully after a while, I got english version and played it again with actually reading everything properly :D
Yeah I never liked the old Resident Evil games and their controls. I only finished RE1 because a friend and I played it together. Other than that Resident Evil 4 is the only one I really like. RE4 also kinda has tank controls but the camera is not fixed it follows you which makes the set up work far better.
I honestly think that if the gameplay was the same as in the first one, no one would complain and say that it's a great sequel. Because its characters, music, environment and monsters are so varied and great. Parasite eve 2 was my first game in the franchise and... Curiously enough, this one makes me not love the first one so much, since I wish I had more of what the second game offered me. Parasite eve 2's gameplay, music, characters and story is bad? Not at all. It's unfair to give it such a low score just because it doesn't have the same gameplay. That score is not objective, it's totally relative to your taste for the first parasite eve. But if you're rating it as a sequel and not as its own thing, then you're absolutely right, it's not the best sequel. And please stop calling it a resident evil clone JUST for having tank controls, because both games (if you played them and don't deign to give a superficial opinion) are completely different in everything, even the gameplay. PD: the 3rd is also a very good game, but it's even WORSE sequel.
Despite loving parasite eve I couldn’t finish it because my tv was widescreen and stretched the game to be really really hard to look at rip 😢 but I loved watching a let’s play of it
I'd say the plot of this had potential it just delivered on it reallllly badly. I found the lack of voice acting so jarring, it was fine in the first because it was a more dialogue heavy rpg style game but with this one being so much closer to Resi in style it just felt weird to have no voices. The story would certainly have felt more real if the characters could actually emote properly to us and each other. It was so jarring in fact that when the 'screaming in the distance' bit actually was voiced I thought the noise was coming from some idiots dicking around in the park across the road from my house. Dryfield was pretty pointless overall and we spend so much time there doing nothing. The shelter/cult was ridiculously sterile, it had no character, no human faces, it felt like it had been abandoned for decades and recently uncovered. It's like exploring an old RPG town that is populated by 3 or 4 people because they could not animate any more than that. If someone competent wanted to reimagine this game just using the bare bones ideas but building on them properly you could probably get a pretty good game - Aya's fears of living forever, her finding her connection to Eve, a more interesting look at the doomsday cult properly fleshed out. These are all great in theory, just ditch all the bloat and sterility (and dull as dishwater Kyle). However complaining about tank controls on old games is rarely a very valid complaint, it's like the kids in back to the future 2 complaining that the light gun game in the retro arcade is a kids' toy because "You have to use your hands?!". It could have been done better in this game but your lack of familiarity with it is not the game's fault.
Well we agree on the plot having potential. And my critique of tank controls is 100% valid because it's my… opinion! I didn't enjoy it and I even say my review if you like tank controls you'll be fine. I just don't. There are plenty of old games that don't use tank controls. :) and I enjoy those. Thanks for watching!
I knew it. This soundtrack describes what you thought the PE1 soundtrack would have been before you played it. Such a step down this game's soundtrack is.
It's weird but I went back to some tank control games after not using them for 15 years or so fully expecting to hate them but... honestly it didn't feel bad. Maybe it's like riding a bike. I just jumped right back in like I never stopped.
I've only ever watched a let's play of this game and yeah, it looks really weird and tedious compared to the first one, which I've only ever watched someone else play as well. the first one seemed very unique and I'd be interested in playing it myself though. not sure if it's available on any current consoles. I feel kind of bad for you, playing so many games you didn't like this year. it's really draining when you have to force it just to see the credits and move on. I've become better at quitting games I don't like but I understand if you feel like you need to finish them since you have a TH-cam channel where you do reviews and all. do you have any old favorites or comfort-games you haven't covered yet? how about staying away from games with poor to mixed reception for a while - maybe that could help since I know some of the games fit the bill? i understand and support needing a break after all of this - hopefully you'll come back stronger with more fun, good games to cover 😊
Yeah, PE2 didn't resonate with me like the first one did. I probably beat PE1 more than 4-5 times and counting, got the true ending, everything. I forced myself to play PE2 for continuation purposes, but I just couldn't stomach it.
I was shocked by how different it was. But i still enjoyed it. But the game did make you stay at the desert hotel too long. It was a spooky area. But it felt like more could had been on disc one. I didn't mind the new battle system. But the magic spells was a let down compared to the first game. At least thr combat was faster. The endings wasn't that good. I like all three games in the series. They all Play different then eaxh other. I enjoyed the combat in part 3 more then the other two. But part 1 had the best story & post game bonus stuff. Part 2 is ok. They hust copy re2 too hard
You didn’t care for Ys8? Wow! I’m looking forward to your review on that one then. So many JRPG TH-camrs rave about that one. I really want to know what you didn’t care for on it.
A weak follow up to a great game. I got this when it came out and stalled in the shelter, just replayed the first one then this and beat it finally but it got to be a slog by the end. The first one is breezy and keeps moving and asides from the sewers nothing outstays its welcome. This one just doesn't have enough going for it to make the backtracking and repetitive environments get old. I also think mini bosses and bosses are oddly clumped with little signaling when it happens. The first is a still a favorite of mine though.
quite a coincidence. i literally completed this game just last week for the first time. it is far worse than some people lead on... not abysmal, but it does not have many redeeming qualities. story wasn't a factor until 3/4 of the way through and forgettable for the most part. no developed characters to engage with. absolutely dreadful music that does a poor job of creating a sense of atmosphere (outside of the end credits theme which i really like). limited number of unique enemies made the encounters very repetitive. some awful puzzles that required me to use a faq... and of course, poor controls which really were not necessary. despite all that, i did feel compelled to spend 15 hours with it and see it through to the end. i think the game did a pretty good job with the map design and backtracking elements. nothing took too long to traverse to. there was also a great emphasis on item and currency management which prevented the game from becoming too easy. difficulty was well balanced and kept me on my toes until the final encounter. that said, it is a very poor sequel to one of my all time favourites on the ps1. it feels like this game was made by a completely different team than the former and it makes me scratch my head as to why square thought this was the best route to take. if parasite eve 2 was squaresoft losing its sense of direction, the third birthday is realizing they are completely lost and don't know how to get home.
"My advice is you better press 'X' against EVERYTHING." Grrrrrrl, you don't even know! Or...actually you do! Grrrrrrl, RIGHT?! As for the game not telling you certain things, that's because it's in the manual! Ahh, the good ol' days.
Unfortunately the gameplay is really what killed this game and it's such a crying shame because the first game is so timeless. The game had so much potential to match the greatness or even exceed the greatness of the original game on its look alone but unfortunately it missed the mark way too much on several specific aspects of this game. The game is pretty much a missed opportunity but there is still a little good that you can take out of it. You gave it a fair try and that is the best anybody can hope for. Personally my experience with the game is the tank controls were incredibly awkward to get use to and I really didn't like how weapons and spells were done in the game and puzzles were beyond annoying. I did get pretty far in the game but I still haven't beat it/complete it to this day. Hopefully one of those years I can buckle down and get this game completed and retired for good. I can't fault you for taking a break and I hope people will be completely understandable. The moment things stop being fun is the moment you have to start re-evaluating things. Take all the time you need to put yourself in a better spot mentally and we look forward to seeing you reviews on specific rpg's regardless if they're good or bad. Constant vigilance kind lady.
I understand that you're not much into the horror genre. But, if I may make a suggestion, you should at least give a gander to the OG Resident Evil. Preferably the Gamecube remake if you can get your hands on it and you have access to a system to play it on. It's not only a gaming touchstone, but the remake is arguably one of the most perfect horror games ever produced. And it visually can still compete with the vast majority of modern AAA titles...to include the recent RE2 and RE3 remakes.
I really wish you'd included a clip of you screaming your lungs out at being jump scared, considering how you always make a point to let us know how much of a chicken you are when it comes to horror. I was actually surprised you played it, as this is more aligned with horror in terms of being scary than what the first game was. Resident Evil is just a stone's throw away now. ;)
Sometimes I feel I am the only person in the world who likes this game. This is definitely one of my most replayed games and still haven't unlocked everything.
The most I like of this game is the graphics and the bosses, but seriously the really bad sequel is The 3rd birthday, the only thing that is really good is the music because Yoko Shimomura made the music again.
I liked the first one more and played it several times, but somehow, PE2 had more replay value for me (probably due to multiple difficulty modes). This is coming from a guy that beat PE1's chrysler building multiple times - shudders -
Yeah, PE2, it had potential, I mean the monster designs are good, the chaser was specially creepy to me because I mean... Look at his face... But then the gameplay was horrible just as you said - who decided to use tank controls in a game where you needed to dodge attacks?! Yeah it was a huge step down, but it could've been worse, I mean at least this was the last PE game, yup there are no more after this one, no sir, none at all, the series gave Aya a dignified farewell.
I absolutely loooooove the original. Amazing story, soundtrack, great characters and at the time graphics. Then I got 2 (back when it came out). I was so excited. Then...honestly I gave up. I got soooo frustrated. I never give up on games, but it was just sooo different and for the worse. Then I got excited when The 3rd Birthday came out. annnnddd fuck. That one is a mess. I gave up on it too. Also its insultingly sexist. (just look up the clothing damage system *rolls eyes and groans*). Anywho great review as always! Keep it up lady!
I am excited to see Pelvic's reaction to 'Refreshing Vulnerability'. Like holy shit, you have seen NOTHING Pelvic, this game ain't nothing compared to 3rd Birthday. .....That being said, after you're break, maybe start with a good game or 2 before jumping back into the crapheap. Maybe Skies of Arcadia and Dark Cloud.
Just finished Parasite Eve 2 with the good ending and have to agree with it being a bad sequel. My gripes with this entry is that you have to backtrack some areas around 10 times just to get enough BP (currency) and EXP in order to beat the final bosses. And the worst part about this is once you get to the final boss and if you don't have enough EXP you can't just go back and grind, you'll have to start a new game. Puzzles were just needlessly hard and for an action game just felt like a time waster. Generic third person shooter gameplay compared to the JRPG style of the first game. Boring side characters. Very forgettable music and plot, can't believe some of the commenters enjoyed this music instead of the godly Yoko Shimomura tracks of PE 1.
Yeah, screw this game. I literally just sold my copy a few weeks ago, along with Hoshigami. Screw collecting RPGs just to KNOW I don't enjoy them. The controls. UGH. And the combat from the first game that i LOVED? GONE. I just pretend there is only one PE game now, because from what I hear The Third Birthday is even worse. Fuuuuuuck dat.

I think her powers were the best thing about this one and the dry field was so creepy and atmospheric even during the day time.

You should play the Resident Evil games, they're really not scary. I mean no monster is scary when you have the firepower to separate its top half from its bottom half with your trusty shotgun. They've always been more about action than horror, and the early games also have some fun puzzles too.
Not scared? Somebody didn’t have a father that gave them them nightmares by making them watch zombie movies at 6 years old.
Wow, did not expect such harsh feelings for this game. I'm not gonna defend it but damn. Made me wish I didn't like PE2 more than the first game.
You should play some Grandia or Grandia II. These games will restore your faith in good rpgs :)
Great video as always :) I think after your break you should play a game which you just know that you will love. That will get you motivated and back on track. Take care, looking forward to more great reviews~
Soooo I gonna assume you're not gonna play the 3rd Birthday?
great review btw and happy Halloween :)
Yes, I preferred 3rd birthday (And that's an even worse sequel really.)
Tank controls weren't an issue, but the camera angles mixed with enemy placement was a constant. Could rarely see what was technically right in front of Ayas face, and the radar only helped so much. Truly a frustrating experience.
Funny how The Sphere Hunter, then Cannot be Tamed and now you reviewed a game in the PE franchise in so close proximity. That's a huge coincidence!
I have only played Parasite Eve II and I love it. Then I kept finding negative reviews and I was surprised but it made so much sense once I saw Parasite Eve I and it's game mechanics.
That 2B shirt!!!😍 so beautiful! where did you buy it?
Happy Halloween! Also taking time off is a good thing. You don't want to work yourself to death.
Happy Halloween! I played a little of this a few months back and basically only remember Coke cans being a pretty good recovery item in this game...
i love the game so much that i am currently working on a remake....solo at the moment.
somehow i didnt know these games existed and now i really want to play them. i was 18 back then think i spent a few years drinking, socialising then came back to gaming after so that explains it first one looked good this one still looks worth a play
Parasite Eve 2 was awesome! PE1 sucked ass.
HOW THE HELL DID YOU LEAVE THE GRENADE LAUNCHER BEHIND?!?! OH MY GOD
@@PelvicGaming I dunno, I left it somewhere to make space and forgot to get it back lol
Do you like .hack//SIGN? Noticed your poster. I enjoyed that back in the day.
i am here and loved the review and the hair. ok, i actually can’t tell which i adore more..... the review, i- it’s gotta be the review
Great review! I still keep hoping they decide to bring the franchise back. The franchise deserves something better than 3rd birthday lol.
Found your channel through PBG and I’m so glad about it! Subbed :)
This is an exelent game iiiiiiiff you play it WITH SOMEONE WITH EXPERIENCE. My dad taught me how to play and that's really why I love this game so much XD. I basically have a personal enciclopedia.
I didn't like Parasite Eve 2 either...then The Third Birthday came out...now I love it.
LOL
Weird How i just played this game on whim again recently
pretty cool game IMO
I'm playing the 1rst one again. Fuck she moves slow. I've never played the 2nd or 3rd
Maybe Skies of Arcadia and some Dark Cloud.
Bad Controls when trying to run in the direction you want to but it doesn’t and bad aiming lock on
i loooooove this game
i play this game first back then, maybe thats why i love this game more than the first
oh and, if you thought PE2 is bad, try playing 3rd Birthday hahahaha
Great video. Now time for some Halloween Candy!
Parasite eve 2 one of the greatest games in PS1 I remember my father playing this game many times and he really took along time to end it .
I love Resident Evil and I don't mind tank controls at all. But I still hated Parasite Eves gameplay, it is very flawed.
You should listen to Resident Evil save room music.
I’ve been waiting on you to do this since you’ve been talking shit about it lol. But it’s not a great game honestly but glad you covered it.
The creators saw the success of RE2 and tried to emulate that, hence the bunker location and "midwestern deserted town" vibe of the second game.
3rd Birthday is even worse if you can believe it, they ruined Aya!
I absolutely love this channel
Thank you for saying Nevada right 🥰
You didn’t care for Ys8?
Yeah no. The second game wasn't that bad. I've played worst. If you want to see God awful play 3rd birthday
Aww, I just came from the first video and you played it.
If you are ever interested in a survival horror that's great for beginners I highly recommend Fatal Frame 2, its great.
I remember playing this as a child and never finished it, nothing like the first one.
If there's one game that isn't horror but is kinda gory, its Castlevania Bloodlines. You might like it!
I'd love to see a Resident Evil 2 style remake for this.
I really wish you'd included a clip of you screaming your lungs out at being jump scared, considering how you always make a point to let us know how much of a chicken you are when it comes to horror. I was actually surprised you played it, as this is more aligned with horror in terms of being scary than what the first game was. Resident Evil is just a stone's throw away now. ;)
FINALLY, SOMEONE SAYING WHAT I SAID ABOUT PE2 WHEN IT FIRST CAME OUT! Thank you so much! Now I know I'm not crazy.
Parasite Eve really needs a hardcore next-generation remake with ray tracing.
PE2, WA2 and FF8 are my problematic ps1 favs lol
Sometimes I feel I am the only person in the world who likes this game. This is definitely one of my most replayed games and still haven't unlocked everything.
Window gazing pelvis is best girl ❣️
The most I like of this game is the graphics and the bosses, but seriously the really bad sequel is The 3rd birthday, the only thing that is really good is the music because Yoko Shimomura made the music again.
I liked the first one more and played it several times, but somehow, PE2 had more replay value for me (probably due to multiple difficulty modes). This is coming from a guy that beat PE1's chrysler building multiple times - shudders -
Perfectly summed up. Great video, as always!
DO YOU PLAY PARASITE EVE?!
@@PelvicGaming once upon a time! I miss video games so much, so your channel makes me remember old times 💚 I wish I could play again!
Lol I remember this game and Dino crisis, you gotta play this game called countdown vampires
You should play the remake of the first resident evil game
Yeah, PE2, it had potential, I mean the monster designs are good, the chaser was specially creepy to me because I mean... Look at his face...
But then the gameplay was horrible just as you said - who decided to use tank controls in a game where you needed to dodge attacks?!
Yeah it was a huge step down, but it could've been worse, I mean at least this was the last PE game, yup there are no more after this one, no sir, none at all, the series gave Aya a dignified farewell.
Haha feeling the same way u are as i just finished cold steel 2 and suikoden. currently playing suikoden 2 shits just a draggggg
This series needs a remake
