I always remember the opening credits cutscene (the funeral one). Such an impactful scene. The music, the yellowish color scheme, the procession with so many coffins, the kids running...
Ugh, hits me right in the chest.

The first part heard of Rudy's theme is straight inspired by the song Ecstasy of Gold by Ennio Morricone. Very cool reference

I think you'd Alter Code F due to all the additions it makes.

I remember buying this game at a Toys R Us back after I played FF7 which I received along with my PS1 for my birthday. For me, it stands as it's equal. The music is absolutely classic and the 2D art style is equally as timeless.

Great review! I remember playing 98ish for quite a long time, and then completely forgetting what to do after putting it down for a week. Every once and awhile I like to go back and watch the intro video on youtube cause the music is so dope.

IDK why but I really love the look of the sprites from this era when they take like a really simple 3D model and draw over it to get pixelated sprites (other examples in Mario RPG and Tombi), it's such a weird, surreal look (kinda reminds me of stop-motion animation) and I love it

God, you are on a roll. 2020 definitely feels like the year to pay tribute to older, well deserving JRPGs and rediscover what made them appeal to fans, and thankfully, you are doing a great job hitting the top ones. I hope someone makes an rpg (top down, sprite-based) and features your likeness as one of the NPCs in town that holds the key, knows the lore, teaches a wicked spell, etc., with your permission, of course. Great work as always. Wild Arms was my hope during the dry "N64/Saturn - no need to translate this, RPGs aren't fun" period of the mid 90's. Charmed as always!

@@PelvicGaming I think this game suffers from the same syndrome as Chrono Cross : great OST, but TERRIBLE, HORRIFYING random battle music. The one music you'll hear over and over. I LOVE Wild Arms; I picked it up on a whim, and it was excellent, even though I wasn't even aware of it until I got my PS3. It doesn't do all that much that's new, but it takes all the best of the old (Lufia 2 dungeons, Jack's SaGa Frontier sparking skills, and the crest graph system is a bit like in Phantasy Star... I think it was 3), and does it so incredibly well. Then, Wild Arms 2 comes along and does it even better with one of the most interesting characters I've ever seen in a JRPG. Great series!

  • @DSan-kl2yc

I never had problems with sleep. Only time I needed the anti sleep spell was the golem on the ship. It was amazing because I had the spell, never needed it, I go to that boss and he puts everyone to spell. And pure happenstance I had tried that spell since I didn't even remember it, and it lasts for like ever.
So you don't really need to waste a slot. Plus once you learn which enemies use sleep, that spell is op.
But I didn't find it necessary as long as you can kill the enemies fast enough, especially the ones with sleep.

It's always a good day when we have lady pelvic look at a quintessential classic ps1 rpg. I do personally own every game in the wild arms franchise, but the only one I have played and completed has been wild arms 3. My wife speaks incredibly highly of this game and the soundtrack is constantly played in our car when we go on long road trips. I'll get to this one eventually and it sounds I'm in for one hell of an experience when I do get around to playing it. I love that 90's style animation.

2:48 - The four Quarter Knights you fight in multiple battles were overall great ideas. Appearances and personalities and such. ... The only problem I had with them was that, for the most part, the numerous battles with them were pretty easy, more so than I would expect of secondary villains who are obviously supposed to be stronger than random enemies you encounter. Boomerang the Executioner was pretty dang challenging, though.

I haven't got around to playing WA series games but I've learnt about it through osmosis as its producer Akifumi Kaneko later created a popular anime Symphogear as his passion project which I'm not unfamiliar with, although not like a huge fan of. Both franchises, despite taking place in two completely separate universes, share a lot of references to mythes around the world, character and narrative tropes, and most notably, distinctively campy speech mannerisms. It's a bit like Kaneko expanded universe.

9:16 - "Might get yer girl to do-si-do." .... Wait, what? XD (But, no, you're right; the Wild Arms games, especially the first one, have an overall great sountrack.) Perhaps my favorite piece was the one that played when Cecilia just saved Rudy from this dream demon or something and Raftina the Guardian of Love came to offer her services because Cecilia proved herself. That, and the theme to Ship Graveyard.

Great review! The only thing that bugged me about this game (besides the random battle frequency) is how quickly they become partners in a forced way. Just seemed way too random. Approaching a stranger
"hey wanna join me on my quest?
    "Ok"
I wish there was a cut scene to show us a realistic way to show us how they met and why they partnered up in the first place.

Thanks for giving this amazing game its props. I loved it. So much fun to explore and play. And the opening was my first exposure to anime. I was hooked from the moment the anime said "Hello."

Wild arms was a perfect in-between from old school pixel art rpg's, and FF7

I got really, really lucky with Sleep RNG. Literally only one time did I get the entire party Sleep'd at the same time. Every other time it missed at least one person and they were able to kill the enemies. The one time it happened I snapped out of it just before I died and finished the battle. I didn't even know how lucky I was at the time

I'm just watching every game review that's about Wild Arms. It's great that people are seeing how fun this series is!
I would also recommend trying Alter Code F when you can. It's the remake of WA1 with some fixes and add-ons.
Edit: saw the status-inflicted attacks. You can use lockstate before they cast said status (provided Cecilia is faster than the enemy)

Wild ARMs is hands down, my favorite PS1 game. It was one of my first games of the generation and just hearing the leap from super nintendo music (though a lot of it is still awesome) to this plus that opening video made my jaw drop. The next games in the series are definitely worth playing, but do be prepared for some odd translation flubs in WA2.

Highlight of the video was the amazing Suikoden 2 map theme @_@. But yea I remember watching my older brother play this masterpiece.. and that intro still one of the best ever right up there with the GOAT of all RPGs Chrono Triggers intro and the much lesser but acceptable Cross' intro.

I appreciate you covering this game as I've been interested in it for awhile. Definitely gave me the kick in the rear to get to it sooner rather than later.
That being said, I just wanna take a moment to honor and recognize your efforts throughout February in regards to Black History Month. I love it. Its just another way you share your personality with us AND make a difference. I'm of a similar mindset: If I have ANYTHING to offer that will help others, be it a platform, experience, etc., I am going to do something about it. So good on you Mrs. Pelvic. Don't know ya personally but dammit I'm proud. Quality human award goes to Lady Pelvic! Haha
Have a good day & thanks for the entertainment/good energy. :)

I originally bought this game to tide me over on RPGs while I waited for FFVII to release way back in the early PS1 days. But I ended up loving this game way more than I expected. So much so that it's one of my favorite PS1 memories. I still get teary eyed from hearing the opening theme song. Wild Arms is still the only game I could never skip the opening when I turned it on, I watched that opening animation every single time I turned the game on. Now I haven't played it since 1997, but I still remember getting very very stuck in the middle of some mid or late game dungeon involving like... magical books or something? I didn't have the internet and I remember being stuck in that same spot for days and days, just running around between these two different halls that had different bookshelves and switches or something. If there were any clues on how to complete it, they went over my head and I ended up just flipping every switch in every possible combination until I finally got it through trial and error.

Each game in the series uses a different gimmick with the ARMS name, and battle systems change too.
Personally, I like the first game's system best, but it'll be cool to see your reviews of 2 and 3

I don't suppose you've played or reviewed Enchanted Arms have you? It's by the Dark Souls people, but is a JRPG made before they got famous for the Souls franchise.
