This review was great because you truly understood the strengths of this game while making it clear the combat is a matter of personal preference. Just because you did not personally enjoy it, doesn't mean others won't; I'm in the latter category yet understand it needs a LOT of fine tuning. I'm glad it didn't lessen your enjoyment and let's hope it gets a remake sometime in the future! Which might happen based on the tweet by Paul of Bluepoint Games.
While not the remake we were hoping for a youtuber named "Flanvel" is remaking it in RPG maker... and honestly.. just to see the custom sprites alone is worth checking it out.
It definitely needs a remake like FFVII to retell the story especially now that the director/writer of Soul Sacrifice moved to Japan Studio in 2016 as director and has definitely potential to re-write this story. Bluepoint Games technical director just recently expressed interest to remake The Legend of Dragoon on twitter. There are still staff at Japan Studio who worked on this title like Tsutomu Kouno and Keigo Tsuchiya who are still working in the same team. The creators left before PS2 era has even started. Kouno-san worked later on ICO, several Pocket Station games and EyeToy: Ape Escape before he took a big break at Sony to plan out a new IP as the lead of a team. Tsuchiya-san had even a bigger break than Kouno-san. He was part of the concept stage for LocoRoco and become art director. Nobody knows what they are up to now as they haven't released anything new since 2009 but they are working on something have they confirmed, even Shu at E3 2015 who was really excited about this really great project. The Legend of Dragoon remake to Bluepoint Games with involvement from Japan Studio would be after what Kouno's team is working on. We have nothing substantial of info yet but Sony Japan trademarked RaySpace in 2017. If that is a clue since the title has similar structure as LocoRoco then The Legend of Dragoon remake would be after RaySpace when Shawn Layden said they are going to focus on fewer and larger games.
A remake sounds nice, it's just that would it still be Legend of Dragoon. They won't put a completly battle system in like FFVII? I would like to see a remake similar to the first resident Evil, where they polish and improve upon what's already there.
@@CornishCreamtea07 The reason why battle system in FFVIIR changed is due to new staff they had to hire for Business Division 1. International market is their target so they thought to reinvent the wheel than keep the same battle system from 1997. Gameplay in SOTC got unchanged by Bluepoint because Ueda supervised the game. With The Legend of Dragoon remake they have no contact with creators since they left Sony in the early days of PS2. Nobody knows where they went. Art director Kenichi Iwata has been with Sony since the early days of PS1 and was interviewed by TV Tokyo in early 2001 when he talked about the next level for RPG on PS2. It was before he left and moved to MS Game Studios Japan to work on Phantom Dust and early work of Lost Odyssey. Creative director Yasuyuki Hasebe came off Super Mario RPG from Squaresoft. He created The Legend of Dragoon and then when Sony Japan said no to the pitch for The Legend of Dragoon 2 he left Sony and the gaming industry. Sony haven't touched this IP for these reasons. Even if there are staff at Japan Studio who worked on it as a team member it was in the PS1 era when RPGs were JRPGs with archaic gameplay issues as the video creator brought up in her video. Japan Studio is very inexperienced with RPGs in modern day. They missed PS2, PS3 and now PS4 generation. And if they tried again it would possible take 10 years to get something out with modern take because they never got to practice on PS2, PS3 and PS4 like Square has.
honestly even graphics comparable to the Final Fantasy 10 remake with obviously amazing cinematics I would hope the turn based addition combat stayed the exact same. Don't fix what isn't broken
Loved this game as a child, watching this was a really nostalgic for me. I have old sketch book with dart and lavitz still in it. I didn't mind the battle system when I was younger, now however I think I agree, i want my grinding mindless. This was a fair review, it's great that you cover older games like this. Keep it up girl!
I get that. As a kid I remember having a good time with it but playing it now it was a bit of a chore. I will say the story is top-notch though. Thank you so much for watching and supporting me. :-)
Id like a remake... remasters are usually poorly done and very little is done which defeats the purpose but id also like a prequal. I dont see a sequal ever being done.
that age of gaming is sadly over and any attempt at remake would ruin it. they'd follow ff7 and turn one amazing rpg into 3 or 4 mediocre action games that would take 30 years to see completed.
Definitely a 9 for me. The combat system set a benchmark for me way back in the day. Would love more games to add real-time features to their combat like this. Maybe a full on rhythm game for attacks is a bit much for some people, but it definitely worked for me. Paper Mario 1000 year door had something similar at play but a lot more stripped back. It might work more for ya. PS: Gust of WIND dance-
This was my absolute favorite growing up. I’d love to see a full remake for this game. And Ive been repeating the addition lines since I was a teenager. Good review!
good news to The Legend of Dragoon fans The Legend of Dragoon could see a remake/remaster at some point director of Bluepoint Peter Dalton said he loved The Legend of Dragoon and could make it a project if you don't know what Bluepoint is they remaster games they did Shadow of The Colossus for PS4 and more so possible that TLoD could see one as well
I loved this game as a child. For me the timing system was mind blowing. I'm still thinking of incorporating it into a game I may design in the future. Would watch, wouldn't play: almost all new Grand Theft Autos
When I watch your reviews I know I'm getting YOUR opinion on the game and not what you hear everybody else saying about the game. I didn't mind the timed button combat as much but in your case it just didn't do it for you and that's why your reviews are so good. You don't pull punches when speaking about aspects of a game and a lot of times you end up addressing things in your reviews that nobody really ever brings up.
Thank you. I mean whats the point of repeating what everyone else says? I think what makes the YOU in TH-cam so important is that it's coming from you. For better or for worse this is how *you* felt. How *you* dis/liked the game. Etc etc. Appreciate the kind words.
The upload date being the same as my birthday feels like a message for me to replay this gem once again. Great vid, I was not really sure what jrpg players thought of the game, since this is the only one of that genre I was actually into.
The ending theme to this day triggers sorrow for me. It was such a beautiful story and well crafted game. I feel it didnt succeed cause sony didnt want it too and final fantasy over shadowed it.
Yoooooooooooooooo, WHAT! I *never* expected to see a review of LotD like... ever. Thank you for giving this game some much needed attention! Also, I definitely agree with all of your criticisms... yet again. You and me seem to be on the same page... must be why I love your content! :D
I just got done playing this game for the first time, thought it was funny that you put this video out the same time i fiished the game, first video of yours ive seen, really like your reviews and how honest you are
Playing this at age 9 was groundbreaking. No other JRPG is like this title. The timed presses kept me engaged in each battle, the characters are amazingly written, the dark story, the main menu music was so mature “if that’s a good word” I always got the sense that everything in the game was fluid and felt interwoven. 9/10 here
Legend of Dragoon, and Golden Sun are one of the best yet underrated to the ass turn base RPGS that could and to me rival the best FF and DQ games. Btw Pelvic you looking so dam gorgeous dam, kill me.
I just finished the game again on my emulator. It brought back memories and frustration. I love it and want them to bring it back like yeaterday. Glad this video popped up on my line.
@@PelvicGaming The game has a fanatical following. So seeing someone really break down in the eays that you did is refreshing. I played this long ago and the combat is what I remember most, I love any JRPG systems with a timing component (like Shadow Hearts as well). I also remember rage deleting my game save when I travelled to the moon and realized I would not be able to go back to finish off the extras. Whip smack!
I always thought the counterattack was a pain to time correctly. I could never get it right. It is actually tougher than the Judgement Ring from Shadow Hearts.
As disappointing as it was to miss, it sure as hell was hilarious seeing your character being Yeeted back, because of what I call, "The Red Traffic Light".
I remember being so hyped for this game. I bought it as soon as it came out. I remember the battle system annoying me at first. But I like these types of battle systems now. I would have recommended the Shadow Hart series to you, but it has timed button presses also however I think it is a more accessible then LOD.
I remember having a hard time with Dart's Moon Strike except one day. My younger sister came to talk to me and while talking/playing, I never missed once.
It's 2021.. And this game still a legend Hopefully there's a remaster or a remake (And if they wanna remake it, hopefully they didn't mess the story up)
Great review like always. Its nice to see someone recognize this underrated JRPG. If this game had not come out during the time of the golden age of Final Fantasy I believe this could've have easily would have become a franchise.
This is still one of my favorite rpg's of all time. I still go back and play it every couple of years. But with the additions I always would just grind at the beginning of the game. In one of the first towns you can by a helmet or something for 10000g that made additions automatic much easier from then on out.
I like rhythm games and adore jrpgs, when I got this game for Christmas what feels like a billion years ago, I was really ecstatic. It wasn't just press x to attack to watch the animation. Felt like I was playing a rhythm game. Good times and great video.
Legend of Dragoon was my favorite Jrpg on the PS1 and my favorite game of all time. I understand you not liking the timed attacks, but honestly it made me feel more apart of the combat. Plus the successful completion of an addition always felt amazing.
Such an awesomeeeee underrated masterpiece of a game! I loved the timing additions! I got them all! I could not get that one last stardust though. That menu music was tight though ❤
Oh boy this game is special to me. I still yell the additions from this game with friends to this day. I had to play a part of this game blindfolded because of a scratched disc. It was just walking up, cutscene, pressing button to get through dialogue. Madness Hero is my favorite too...also double punch. Dubble punch, you know for kids. He just says it so nonchalantly.
Yeah I think I agree about the whole timed button press thing. The older I get the less I care for RPGs trying to implement pseudo actiony stuff. A turn based RPG should be a mostly chill time gameplay wise.
The timed attacks was a fun element because I played this with friends and we’d just pass the controller for our chosen characters; it injected some skill for our pseudo co-op experience. Also Shana’s theme is goated!
Thank you so much for making a video on this game. It made my childhood and is seriously under-rated. I would love to see a remake or even a remaster of this in the future.
Have to hand it to you. I embarked on LOD about a year and a half ago. Quickly fell in love with it (never beat it back in the day, oh PS1 you rpg hedonist), but slowly came to hate combat timing. Like good hair days in my twenties, I just had so many inconsistencies in timing. Glad you recommend it with a caveat. Great review!
I still have this game on my shelf. It holds a special place in my heart. The intro and credits song from Elsa Raven - "If you Still Believe" pierces my heart. This game holds a spot in my personal Top 10 RPG's I've ever played.
Anyone else think Dart Feld is one of the coolest names in gaming history? (Edit to answer the question at the end) Asura's Wrath. Amazing visuals and great cutscenes, but... the gameplay just doesn't have the same quality.
When I was a kid I totally didn’t understand additions at all, and it led to me getting slaughtered by the Sandora Elite. But later on I replayed it as a teenager, and it made more sense. I like additions because it makes you more active during turn based gameplay.
Awwww yeahhhh, I love love loveeeee this game. It was my first RPG game and I fell in love with it. I got it on my 16th bday back then after begging for it. Totally worth it btw. Now my younger sis is playing it too. I love the music so does my mom, I love the story. I agree on how hard the timed attack were and yeah they could be frustrating lots of times but worth the feeling when you got it spot on. Ive bought dreams to see if I can remake this game sorta. Yeah the voice acting of the attacks are to some cringy, I kinda loved it but that's my nerdyness loving it. Also I'm a new follower as of now, loved this review and hope you ll make lots more ❤️.
Great review. I'm a pretty diehard fan of this game as I beat the bonus boss several times and satisfied over mastering everyone's additions, and I totally agree with your thoughts and opinions with everything outside of combat. Hearing Madness Hero makes me mentally facepalm in glee everytime I hear it. It's great XD
Thanks for this awesome review! This is definitely one of my favorite Jrpgs of all time. I can understand your complaints with the combat system but I absolutely loved it. I was a huge fan of the timed button presses. Made the battles feel more engaging. Keep up the great content.
@@PelvicGaming I'm actually just after the part where Dart and Rose fall from the Queen Fury after the Dragoon Campaign cutscene. I never managed to collect all the stardust and fight Faust so I decided to replay it again for that. Even learned even more new stuff after years of playing it. The lore is probably one of the biggest reasons I always go back to the game and replay it.
Really thorough review! I personally liked the addition system, but can totally get how it was a drag with those obnoxious red counters. Everything you said was on point-you got a new sub!
Really enjoyed your take here, especially your ending thoughts. Great game overall but at the same time I don’t really have a desire to play it again anytime soon lol. We actually referenced your review and included a clip of it in our recent video we just made over this game a couple weeks ago. Keep up the solid content, JRPGs need more stuff of this quality 👌
Just hearing the music brought a smile to my face, so I definitely had to replay this and have not been disappointed. About to fight the secret boss because I did not do that when I first played so long ago. The polygon models definitely show its age, but it's still a great game.
What a forgotten game. I really believe SONY initially envisioned this becoming a series. I was never able to get into it much but my younger sister loved it.
I agree with you about the combat and addition system. I really didn't care for it in the beginning and it took some getting used to the timing especially the final unlockable additions. Though, it grew on me the more proficient I got. Blazing Dynamo, Omnisweep, and Perky Step are my favorites and they were really fun to pull off once you got the timing down. Great review overall.
I just need to pause this video real quick to let you know that I fucking love you! With all of my heart! This game is my everything and introduction to the world RPG. I'm so happy you're reviewing it.
I was wondering if there was a review for this game, because it seems like the world forgot about Legend of Dragoon. It was an incredible joy that not only is there a review, but an incredibly competent one! I was expecting much less production value for sure haha. Love this game, but totally agree on the battles in general. I get that they dipped like all the budget into the visuals and they are absolutely amazing, but the game definitely takes its time to let you smell the roses. Even if that means shoving the roses in your face. Also gotta agree about additions, cool concept but such a pain in the ass. Especially when you have to do it over and over and over to do any substantial damage. Still have a lot of fond memories of this game, played it with my family as a kid and we still quote the AAA voice acting. Thank you for this review, might just decide to dust off the old jewel case and burn 120 hours of my life. Astral Drain aaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
This was a good review. I beat this game last year. I liked Legend of Dragoon but I wouldn't call it a classic like so many people do. It has flaws, especially in the combat and voice acting.
Lmao, I still remember when I got this game. It was between this or Kingdom Hearts so I called my sister and said, choose between "Legend of Dragon" or "This Mickey Mouse game." She obviously chose the "dragon" one (I misread the title). Your sister stopped you from playing it and my sister is the reason I even ended up grabbing it back in the 00s. Damn, nostalgia.
the music was amazing in crystal palace in village of tragedy , world theme rose them and reminiscince ofc also in some place they got combined music with the wind create a very soulfull combination and in the horizon a dragon flew over and over lol xd
This one really brought me back in time. I'm happy you didn't spoil it since I forgot most of the game and at the time I got FF10 and for some reason I forgot about this game and didnt even finish it. I agree with all the points you said. I remember how crappy the time combat was. Thank you for the review I look forward to any more you might do.
Great review. You always look at games very objectively. So many people bash this game simply because they struggle with the addition system. I could host a TED talk on how the game works with you on that but I digress. My all time fav game so glad it’s out on PS4/PS5 now

Thank you for watching! :-)
If you keep playing it there is an item that does the moves for the characters
The voice acting for this game is fvcking masterpiece haha. The game is beautiful and a fun experience.
I love this game. It's the first jrpg I ever beat and it holds a special place in my heart. I also love the world and art direction
Always good to see my childhood so well represented.
An absolute classic. Just finished up streaming it again a couple weeks ago. Absolutely love this game.
Congrats on finishing! :-)
I still have this game on my shelf.
It holds a special place in my heart.
The intro and credits song from Elsa Raven - "If you Still Believe" pierces my heart.
This game holds a spot in my personal Top 10 RPG's I've ever played.
The legend of dragoon was and still is my number one favorite game of all time to play
Anyone else think Dart Feld is one of the coolest names in gaming history?
(Edit to answer the question at the end)
Asura's Wrath. Amazing visuals and great cutscenes, but... the gameplay just doesn't have the same quality.
Thank you for this. Still my favorite game to this day
Remake or better yet *Prequel*
Ive been shouting this for the past 10 years.
My favourite one on PSX !!! Thanks for the review 🔝♥️ Best wishes from Spain
I could watch one of my former roommates play through the Fable games all day but I have zero interest in playing them myself.
FORBIDDEN LAND BATTLE IS MY FAVORITE THEME TOO! ALSO THE THIRD BOSS BATTLE THEME, THE ONE FOR VIRAGES
Forbidden Land theme always makes me think of the Macarana lol
Excellent review! Lots of information but I still get a good sense of why you personally like it. Good stuff 👍
I have revisited this game almost every 5years. Don’t know why they haven’t considered a remake, since FF7 is about to be released.
Great review!
Thank you for watching. :-) Blue Point the people who remade Shadow of the Colossus showed interest in remaking this game so who knows... :-)
One problem, LoD sales in 2000 we're stifled due to similarities to FFVII. I'd hate for it to happen again, 20 years later.
When I was a kid I totally didn’t understand additions at all, and it led to me getting slaughtered by the Sandora Elite. But later on I replayed it as a teenager, and it made more sense. I like additions because it makes you more active during turn based gameplay.
THE MENU MUSICCCCCCC AND MAP 2 theme had me weakkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk YOUR REVIeW is GOATTTTTTTTTTTTTT subscribed
THANK YOUUUUUUUU
I think I've played this game through 3 times; but always several years apart-long enough to forget everything.
This is one of my fav games from my childhood! Thanks for the video :3
Thanks for watching!!
Ive played this game repeatedly and always enjoy every playthrough. I've gone through it at least 12 times and always get nostalgic.
WOW. I am impressed. Bravo!! I couldnt do it. Even if I do LOVE the story.
Thank you very much. :-)
I love everything about this game. The combat to me is still the best in any ps1 rpg. My favorite game of all time.
What a forgotten game. I really believe SONY initially envisioned this becoming a series. I was never able to get into it much but my younger sister loved it.
Playing this after like 15 years I'm enjoying myself for what ever that's worth I also am enjoying the video keep it up
I agree with you about the combat and addition system. I really didn't care for it in the beginning and it took some getting used to the timing especially the final unlockable additions. Though, it grew on me the more proficient I got. Blazing Dynamo, Omnisweep, and Perky Step are my favorites and they were really fun to pull off once you got the timing down. Great review overall.
girl, if your friends don’t have “madness hero” as your ring tone, do they really love you?
I guess not. );
I just need to pause this video real quick to let you know that I fucking love you! With all of my heart! This game is my everything and introduction to the world RPG. I'm so happy you're reviewing it.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! ♡♡♡♡
0:29 it me!
It you!
Astral Drain
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I'm modding my PS Classic this weekend. Definitely a must have in the collection.
Amazing vid. Makes me wanna pick this game up and play through again. Still hoping for a remastered version. Maybe one day.
There is an item to slow down attack square speed to learn additions easier at the expense of performing criticals.
Yeah see...we don't believe in trade offs here lol
I loved this game as a kid. I still love it today. Its my most favorite RPGs ever made.
Wish i played this game as a kid, your review makes me want to play it! Thanks for the video!
This was a good review. I beat this game last year. I liked Legend of Dragoon but I wouldn't call it a classic like so many people do. It has flaws, especially in the combat and voice acting.
Thank you. :-) I will consider it a cult classic. Flaws and all.
Beat this game like 4 times in h.s everytime i found something new omg loved this game i still have the cd and case bruised up with great memories 😭😭
Your sister is the MPV
I loved this game. still my #1 RPG for the PS1 that i still play to this day.
the music was amazing in crystal palace in village of tragedy , world theme rose them and reminiscince ofc also in some place they got combined music with the wind create a very soulfull combination and in the horizon a dragon flew over and over lol xd
the menu music is LEGENDARY
This one really brought me back in time. I'm happy you didn't spoil it since I forgot most of the game and at the time I got FF10 and for some reason I forgot about this game and didnt even finish it. I agree with all the points you said. I remember how crappy the time combat was. Thank you for the review I look forward to any more you might do.
Great review. You always look at games very objectively. So many people bash this game simply because they struggle with the addition system. I could host a TED talk on how the game works with you on that but I digress. My all time fav game so glad it’s out on PS4/PS5 now
Pretty good review. This is in my top 3 favorite games. You really nailed this review though. You pronounced everything beautifully. :]
You just became my favorite reviewer because u review this game
Woo!! Thanks
Ahhhhhh you reviewed this game, this is my favorite JRPG of all time and man glad it got some love.
I got this game the year it came out on my birthday and it still remains my favorite rpg.
