2024 Chevy Silverado 1500 ZR2 Duramax. Worth the hype?

  • Is this the ultimate truck? The 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500 ZR2 Duramax might just be it!
    I take a closer look at this beast and compare it to other models in the lineup. With the addition of the 3.0 LZ0 Duramax diesel engine, this Silverado is a force to be reckoned with. Is it truly better than the Raptor or Tundra? Is this the best upgrade from a Chevy Trail Boss?

    I think you've made me change my mind. I've been looking for a truck to replace my 2020 JLUR. It breaks my heart to get rid of it after driving Jeeps for 30 years, but after my hip replacement(82nd Airborne, retired) I can no longer take the narrow seats. I just need more room. They were comfortable, but not afterwards. I had been looking at a Ram Rebel or a Powerwagon. Your review has made me think that the ZR2 may be what I'm looking for. It's not a Jeep for offroad stuff, but nothing is. I'll always be a Jeep guy at heart. However, it does have lockers front and rear, and a bit of a lift, so I won't feel as I've been neutered. @@MOHAWKAUTO At the time they only had the 6.2L in the ZR2 but I test drove a RST trim with the LZO. Both are unbelievable engines and anyone is blessed to own one of these killer machines in my personal opinion. Here in Flint, Michigan gas prices for 93 octane are around 3.60ish a gallon. Diesel is 3.80ish. Only downfall I could ever see when buying the 6.2 was the obvious mpg comparison and the powertrain warranty isn’t the 100,000 miles like the diesel is. I had to reach into my piggy bank a little farther to match that safety net. Way too many complaints in the past about lifters and such for me not to have it.

    • @MOHAWKAUTO
      @MOHAWKAUTO  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It was about 15% at the time and the acceleration is good, but different than the 6.2. I really want to take my truck to the local drag strip to get official numbers to compare. The 6.2 feels and sounds faster (that motor is such a good sounding engine with exhaust), and I’m sure it is compared to the 3.0. However, the 3.0 isn’t the slouch people make it out to be because of it’s almost 500 lbft of torque and smooth shifting transmission. It’s a lot quieter and not as dramatic so it doesn’t have that same sense of urgency, but it would be good to have hard numbers to actually compare. I’ve never felt like my truck couldn’t get up to speed well enough, although I would like to get some sort of pedal commander to provide a more linear response and to eliminate the dead pedal sensation when getting off the line. This isn’t unique to GMs or this motor, but I do notice it to be more obvious on this truck.

    Do you think you are saving money with the diesel after accounting for higher fuel prices, DEF costs, and the extra repair costs associated with a diesel engine? Seems like a good choice, I’m just curious if you are actually saving money on fuel after the extra costs are accounted for.

    • @MOHAWKAUTO
      @MOHAWKAUTO  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I’m positive I am saving money. Diesel isn’t that much more money here, DEF is cheap and lasts a while, and idk what extra repair costs I’d have over gas these days, but my extended warranty should hopefully cover it for a long time. The fuel savings alone because of the mileage increase covers all other costs and then some. I just got back from a long trip and was seeing over 23 mpg consistently and as much as a little over 30 mpg at times. You’re not going to get that in a gas V8 half ton.

    I have to argue with you about fuel economy. I have a 2021 Silverado RST, with 5.3 . I drive minimum of 100 miles round trip daily(I’m an electrician). As long as I keep under 75-78 I’m getting 23 mpg. I also own 2024 1500 Denali with 3.0 duramax, with perfect cool temps, not running ac I’m averaging 24-27 mpg. But my 5.3 takes 87 octane, and diesel is $1.50 more per gallon. So overall the 5.3 is better motor, also my 5.3 has better tow capacity. This diesel isn’t made for towing like the 6.6 duramax it’s made for fuel mileage. It sucks a gal of def towing per 100 miles lol, plus transmissions run too hot towing. Don’t believe these TH-camr’s. There’s a reason diesel is a $10 to $12k add on 3/4 ton trucks but it’s only $800 add on the half tons. Look at your sticker, 3.0 is only $800 more than 5.3

    • @MOHAWKAUTO
      @MOHAWKAUTO  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@buckshot5896 on my ZR2, the 3.0 is thousands cheaper than the 6.2 V8 and those are the only engines offered. It tows great and I averaged 15 mpg while towing my travel trailer weighing about a little over 7k lbs. I never had overheating issues (multiple mountain passes between Idaho and the Oregon coast and frequently in the triple digits temps or near) and after over 1,000 miles for that trip I maybe used 3-3.5 gals of DEF. Most of the DEF consumption took place while going up steep grades. Far more than when I’m not towing, but not the end of the world. Flat towing I haven’t seen it use much more DEF. Also, for me, diesel is much cheaper than gasoline.

    Buyers really need to know a lot more about the reliability of the LZO from owner-experience, along with the 10-Speed transmission combined with the LZO. I really wanted to buy one with the 3.0, but "some" owners are experiencing oil consumption.Chevy TSB states 1 quart per 1000 miles is "normal" which translates into we ain't fixing it. Ended up with a cummins, a little more that I needed but, proven.

    • @MOHAWKAUTO
      @MOHAWKAUTO  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nothing wrong with a Cummins. The LM2 seemed to use more than the newer LZ0 from what I can find. I also noticed that a lot of the consumption was at lower mileage suggesting it was a break in thing as opposed to a permanent issue. I’ve put 2300 miles on my truck since I bought it and I’ll check the level tomorrow and see what it’s showing.

    Check the oil every 1000 miles they burn a bit for the first 10,000 miles. The dealer adds an extra quart when the truck is new but was halfway down the stick at 3,000 miles. Demonworks has the best lzo channel most others have lots of faults in their claims!

      The truck isn’t too small, but it does have a short box that might make it look that way. The camera can also make the vehicles appear smaller than they really are. The 2500 doesn’t fit my needs. It doesn’t have a short box, it doesn’t have the same fuel economy, and it’s more expensive. If you watch my latest video where I test it in the snow, you’ll see me in it and it gives a better idea of the size.
