Thanks for this. I’ve mounted tires by hand before but was fighting a set today. Watched two other videos before yours and still fighting. The key that saved me from your video was to keep the opposite side down off the lip of the wheel as it had crept up as I worked the tire around.

I used to work at an amusement park where I would always have to go out and help the maintenance vehicles reseat their tires to the rim because for some weird reason these guys were always hitting something and basically breaking the bead of the tire which is probably because they would drive around with the tire pressure so low that the instant they hit something the tire would lose its seal. I would jack up the truck and then put a ratcheting strap around the outside diameter of the tire really tight. Then I'd start filling the tire with air to pop the bead back into place and remove the strap and fill the tire back up to the pressure it was supposed to be. 14 years later I find myself randomly watching videos about manually installing tires while drinking my morning coffee.... Nice tutorial!

A way that I would do it is to put the car on jack stands, place a board on tire , place oem jack on board, start jacking up against under the car.

    • @186scott
      @186scott 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@GuyX2013 another way to do it is to use a trolley Jack and a rachet strap so you essentially strap the rim and tire down to the bottom of the jack and the jack up the tire to break the bead

The "skinny" part of the wheel is called the drop center, it's easier to put the tire on if the edge (bead) of the inside is pushed down into the drop center before putting the rest of the tire on the wheel. Good tutorial though 👍👍.

Thanks for the video. You saved me $120 actually about 180 with balancing. I have 22" rims and my tire machine only does 20" so I was going to take it to the shop. First tire too me about 3 minutes to get it off now finish the other 3 and need to clean up my rims and mount my tires. Only suggestion I have is take the tires off from the back side so you don't scratch the rims.

6:00 instead of standing you can also use vice grips, and for the place where the top bead is having a hard time and you can’t reach the bar under, hit the head sideways with a rubber mallet. also, the same rubber mallet strat works for getting the bottom bead on

we used a method SIMILAR to this to replace tires for semis at a shop i worked at. If you just put some heat shrink over the tire irons then you won't hurt anything but the reseason you scratched your rim is because you didn't use more bars. resistance is what causes scraping and marks. Oh and just straight dish soap (we used dollar tree brand) works better than water and soap mixture.

Big thank you for posting this! Just did my truck tires - 265/65/17s. Have a manual tire changer, but didn't realize it only fits rims up to 16". I've done tons of bicycle & moto tires, didn't even cross my mind that car/truck tires could be done this way. Broke the beads with the tire changer, then swapped out the tires using 17" curved moto tire irons. Way more leverage than those small spoons, made the job almost as easy as the manual tire changer.

Evan is right its a perfect way for penny pinchers. There are two things i would stress, theres no substitute for lubrication, always use plenty. Also early in my tyre fitting career i asked an old fitter the secret. His reply was it is like drinking Scotch, a little and often ! (this was a reference to how much bead to ease over the rim!).

I always turn the rim face down. That way all your pry-bar work is done on the inside (unseen) lip of the rim, as you're removing the old tire. Face down again when mounting the new tire as well. This way your pry-bar never comes in contact with the 'finished' front side of the rim.

ty, my S4 has tires that are a very close size to those, from what I've read before I thought these tires were too short to be able to do it without a professional tire changing machine. I guess maybe what I had read was that it's impossible to do it without damaging the rims, as that does seem to be the case. anyway ty, glad to see it can be done and maybe I will start doing it myself.

Nice job! I well remember dismounting/mounting tyres this way when I lived back in the UK, but I'm surprised you made no mention of asymmetric rims (think the original Minis), those tyres needed to be mounted/dismounted from one side, as they were so small they wouldn't stretch over the wrong side, and I've seen many brand new tyres ruined by some gorilla attempting to mount them from the wrong side. Also you made no mention about direction of rotation, or balancing after mounting???

I have my own rim clamp tire machine. Purchased it from Harbor Freight probably 14 years ago when they sold them. They don’t anymore. The HF machine didn’t come with a bead blaster but I also own a portable Bead Blaster hanging on the wall that I used with a old 10/10 Coats Tire Machine that I owned previously. Even with the HF machine it could be a tuff job with some tires. I can’t mount Run Flat Tires with it. Had a tuff enough time trying to demount one from a C5 Corvette. Forget about trying to do it on the ground without a machine. The price was right on the HF machine at $1000 delivered to a loading dock where I picked it up in my Van back then. Other then not being able to do Run Flat tires I saved plenty of time and money over the years owning this machine. Not sorry one bit that I purchased it to have in my Pole Barn along with a 9000lb lift,80 gallon Compressor, balancer both High Speed and bubble and other needed Automotive equipment. I never wanted to be at the mercy of the local garage if at all possible. It paid off with all my regular vehicles and Collector Cars.

I had 2 sides of the tire touching one another and still didn't break. Put tire lube and nothing, wd40 and nothing. Finally I cut it off then tried to slip on the new tire. why no mount and dismount on the non visible side of the wheel( the back side) it may still get scratch but at least it will not be visible from the front!

I dare you to try this on a 15" or 16" Pick-up truck tire. I've done it, but used tire irons and LONG cheater bars,...

This may be doable on garbage tires such as the ones in this video but on something like an RE71 or RT660 it’s impossible to remount. Getting them off is super easy. Going on is the issue. You can’t just stand on them to get them to stay off the bead. They’re too damn stiff. I get it though, no one drifts on good tires.

Thanks. But I will say that when you're pulling or replacing OLDER tires, they just aren't so flexible anymore. Still doable, but bigger PITA! :-)

To break the bead i made up a square frame out of some scrap metal, put wheel in frame and used a bottle jack. First attempt was a pain in the arse, took me ages, 2nd attempt went a lot smoother and quicker.

All these videos are good idea but if you don't balance your tires it will be a very rough ride
