    If you’re not plugged into the long range shooting community, you might not have heard about the new 300 Precision Rifle Cartridge (300 PRC) Hornady officially released in 2018.
    Is the 300 PRC just a fad that people will forget about in a few years when the next big thing comes along? Does the 300 PRC provide enough benefits for hunters and shooters to justify making the switch over to the new cartridge?
    In this video I discuss the pros and cons of the 300 Precision Rifle Cartridge in detail, plus I also provide some information on the 300 PRC vs 300 Win Mag so you can decide which one fits your needs as a hunter.

    PRC brass will work better and be more enjoyable for the reloader. But no real justification to switch. If I were starting over I would go PRC. But It's not worth the expense to change, the win mag has won plenty of rifle tournaments.

    It's not about switching for me, it's all about adding another variation of the venerable .308 caliber/cartridge rifle to a collection that has the .300 Win Mag, .300 Wby, and .30-378 Wby among others.

    Simply put, within normal hunting distances they are identical. When it comes to readily available, every store that has ammunition stocks the 300 Win mag. Ammo variety, 300 Win takes it by a land slide. Now....if you are into reloading the 300 PRC has all you could ask for. Plenty of room to stretch its legs when hand loaded and packs a bigger punch at long range. Personally like the 300 PRC. Liked it enough I’m now running a 30 Sherman mag which is a PRC improved.

      Maybe, maybe not? Hogdgon lists the Winnie Mag as the largest 0.300” cartridge, that you can load reduced H 4895 loads for. This larger PRC is a no no!
      My solution was having my GS deepen my rifle’s neck/throat, + 0.050”. I ordered a loaded RCBS 300 Win Mag FL Sizing die, and case formed 300 Wea. pull down brass to this modified case. My Hornady die set will not work, period. Then I trim back to this + fifty thousandths Winnie Mag chamber.

    I dont understand why everyone's gotta constantly bitch and complain about a new cartridge coming out. Nobody is forcing you to get rid of your precious 300WM or RUM or WSM or nosler or whatever the fuck and switch to a 300PRC. The cartridge was designed for a specific niche, its not meant to suddenly dethrone all these other 30 cals... besides, when have we ever needed an excuse to buy more guns 🤣 shoot what you enjoy, it's that simple. Personally, I'm loving the 300PRC so far. People seem to forget it's only been around for 4 years... give it some time, I guarantee there will be lots more ammo options available for it in the future. And not just from Hornady either...

    300wm - old school tried and proven hunting and long range target, it does amaze me that the old girls are pretty much only beaten in ballistics by the newer guns having the ability to run a longer proj, apart from that basically just copies of old proven designs

    I used 300 win mag in the army. I'll stick with it. For long-range precision, there are better calibers than the 300 PRC, and some of them have less recoil, better ballistics, and a higher velocity. Though I do like that the 300 PRC potentially has a longer barrel life than a 300 win-mag.
    Besides, taking an elk or moose at more than 800 yards is questionable, with anything smaller than a 338. Mountain goats, sheep, deer, of course, a little farther with 30 caliber. But, the goal is quick and ethical kills and not to make the animal suffer as you chase after it for 30 min or more, just so you can get the animal and claim to have got it at x distance. It's called hunting for a reason, improving your stalking skills and getting closer. That makes you a real hunter.
    The ethical kill is more important than what distance you "could" take a shot!
    With any of the big calibers, you need a good recoil reducing butt system. I personally like FalconStrike. Also, a good muzzle brake, specifically designed for the caliber you are shooting, not some general covers all calibers design. Both of those combined with moderate rifle weight makes my 300 win-mag feel like a mild .270 load.

    Great video description..the 300 win mag IMHO is KING of the 30 Cal rounds..
    It’s hard to keep up with all this new ammo that is difficult to find unless you hand load…not all have the time or talent..skip this and go straight to the 300Norma or 338 lapua..expensive..but at least it’s available.

    I want one of these but I'm not a very big guy and the recoil and amount of powder scares me lol... I reload for 308w currently and it's around 44gns. The 300 PRC has upwards of 80gns. That's alot of powder! Don't think it would fit in my Hornady LNL either

    I am not really seeing a huge incentive to switch to the PRC from my win mag except maybe being able to load up to 250 gr bullets. I am already using Hornady 225 ELD‘s with an overall length of 3.7 granted that is probably due to the fact that my Remington 700 seems to have a very long throat which allows me to use these long bullets without sticking too much of it into the case.

    • @devinb3397
      @devinb3397 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Is your twist in the 300mag optimised for those heavier projectiles though? Most 300win mags can’t stabilise 200gr properly let alone 225gr. I mean it’ll fly straight but you won’t get the best BC.

    • @mdixon26288
      @mdixon26288 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Have you swapped barrels on your 700? Factory twist rate is 1:10. No way that's effectively stabilizing a 225 ELD. Sure it will fire but that accuracy has to be sh*t.

    Would like to buy a 300 Win Mag Hunting rifle and be able to load longer bullets, Is the 300 PRC chambered in long or Magnum actions ? as the OAL for the PRC is 3.7 " and the 300 Win 3.55 ", from what I guess is that the PRC is chambered in a long action , Please recomend a rifle that I can load longer Bullets in a 300 Win Mag without going custom. Thank for the advice

    • @youknowitsmetheone
      @youknowitsmetheone 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The entire point of the 300PRC is to be able to load and shoot longer bullets, you are limited with the 300WM because its head hight wasn't designed for such bullets. The 300PRC is purpose built to offer high ballistic coefficient large caliber heavy bullets. You can't achieve this with any combination of 300WM bullets its not possible.

    • @greatlakespowerstrokefx4
      @greatlakespowerstrokefx4 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Being it out performs big roy in a standard long action, its not trying to play catch up at all. 300 weatherby mag was an improved version of a 300 h and h mag which was a spectacular cartridge but required a magnum action or modified mauser action.

    • @mdixon26288
      @mdixon26288 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really. Weatherby mags are all about velocity. The higher velocity drops off fast without a high BC bullet. The new cartridges are all pushing long high weight high BC bullets for better performance at long range.

    My 300wm shoots 208 amax well out of my tikka factory tac3 - I load them long so single feed them. Plenty of power - so don’t need lots of follow up shots from a magazine anyway.
    Also it loves the 230 Berger’s - and yer I’ve shot them out past 1000m very accurately so they must manage to stabilise ok.
    Having said that, I’d buy the 300prc if I didn’t already have a 300wm. The belt on the wm is a pain in the @$$ sometimes with some brass makes. So yer the prc would be my pick if I had nothing already.
