Wow... that last cake was cool. Totally agree that disclosure is needed. I am extremely allergic to balloon latex and could have severe reaction if I touched it, let alone eat a piece of it. Would have to take off stars/points for that lack of disclosure.
Yeah I 100% agree that the baker should have disclosed that to protect both the customer buying the cake to not have any severe emergencies and the baker to avoid a lawsuit. Mostly for the potential health risks though because your health should most definitely be the priority.
Plus, balloons are not food safe. Latex can degrade in oils and fats. It’s just that’s s the danger of at home bakers. There’s no regulation and nothing saying that the person is knowledgeable in hygiene or safe food handling practices.
@TheIcingArtist I wouldn't be able to eat the last cake knowing that there was risk of plastic wrap. I would 🤢, and it wouldn't even help if I went over it with a fine toothed comb. They should not have done that to you - though if they did, honestly, I would much rather they put in a balloon than plastic wrap. Yuck. Just no. 100% no.
Same. I had done 3 tier cake fondant 6,8,10 inch for $300 10 had hand made fondant large rosette ruffles (which took me forever to make) , 8 has bow and 6 inch top had pearls plus 6 inch rosette smash cake for $60.
The best way I've found to make sure I'm charging enough for my work is to accurately measure all the pieces of a product (including labor! at a living wage!) and total that up so I know my actual cost of goods sold. Then mark up by the amount of profit I want to make on each sale. I made a spreadsheet so that I can just enter numbers for each thing and it auto-calculates most of it for me.
Definitely definitely should have been told about the balloon. Not only is it inedible, but latex allergies are very common and a lot of times very deadly. Definitely a scary moment there haha
I agree that the Blank Space affect on the cake should have been FULLY edible. I would have made a sort of cup out of candy melts that sat in a whole in the center of the cake, filled it with the edible red goop, placed a piece of rice paper over the top and then iced over that.
I love this! As a cake decorator, I really like that you explained why the more expensive cakes cost more. I have recently had to raise my prices because of the rising cost of ingredients ( I bake from scratch, custom cakes only), and have recently had a customer tell me it was too expensive, and asked for a discount because she has ordered from me before. Unfortunately, I just can not justify lowering my prices in this economy, when I can barely even afford the ingredients 🤷🏻♀️
My I ask how you handled that? This hasn't been happening, but I need to raise for my existing customers and not sure how to go about it. I was thinking something like, due to the rating costs, I have had pt raise my prices ...something like that
@@staceyy2827 this particular customer only orders from me about once a year, so it is reasonable that every time she orders the price might be a little bit more as prices often do rise at least once a year. And basically I told her the quote for her cake and she said that it was outside of her price range and asked for flexibility in price because she has ordered from me before. And then asked how much a plain white cake would cost, which I gave her a price for. This was my reply to her discount request: "Hi, no problem, take your time :) Unfortunately as the prices of ingredients continue to rise, I am forced to raise my prices with it :( However, if you would like to order a smaller cake, I can give you a quote for that as well"
@@staceyy2827 I didn't feel the need to make an announcement to all my customers as my business is small and my repeat customers rarely get the same type of cake design twice. They just accept it when raise my prices every year (about an increase of $0.25-$0.50/ serving usually).
A friend/coworker’s mom used to do cakes for our youngest’s birthday parties. She was pretty good & did it more for fun than for a business. She would use the star tip & the lining tip but did characters. Elmo, Blue from Blue’s Clues etc… she was very good & only charged about $20 for a cake that served 15-20. I felt guilty she wasn’t charging more lol. I finally told her she should be charging a bit more because a grocery store cake would be around $35+. (This was years ago). She also did cakes for other people too & I felt she was losing money. She did start charging a bit more.
Okay, I totally 100% understand that bakers should tell their customers if there are parts of a cake that is not edible bc holy stars that would have been a huge liability... that being said, that was one of the coolest cake cutting experiences I have ever witnessed -- and it was on theme! So creative, so impressive. I agree, I think that if casing of what was holding that "liquid blood" was edible that would have been totally worth the $110 for the cake. Also, shout out to Iulia for making these videos so much fun to watch ~ :D Thanks for your hard work on editing these!
I literally forgot about the free bakery cookie until you mentioned it! Totally used to live for a free cookie. In recent years, I noticed they have a basket with fruit like bananas and apples that you could have free for a child while shopping. That’s way less fun than the free cookie. lol.

edible way of adding a liquid into the cake (coz I have made that waaaay back when) white chocolate. I had carved out the space that would hold the 'blood' and had two layers of white chocolate to prevent the jam I had prepared from flowing out. My grocery store used to give a (fresh baked) cookie, and a piece of deli meat if you asked. What was really cool was when you asked for a cookie they would offer you a coupon for 1 free fruit instead of the cookie, so you could get an apple, banana, orange, or pear. The research that goes into these cake requests is incredible! I know nothing about Taylor Swift so if I was given the task of a themed cake… that would be SO much work! I totally understand the pricing when that’s included!!
Iulia is the MVP of editing! I’m glad you mentioned inflation because I know that has affected so much. The bakers need to look out for their bottom line, too.
Kevin, our grocery store’s bakery ALWAYS had cookies out on a tray. Hearing you talk about it unlocked a memory! Every time we went to the store we immediately went to the bakery cause we were excited to see what flavor they had out that day
As a home baker I am definitely starting to learn to charge what I’m worth and I find that majority of my customers don’t have an issue with my pricing and the ones that argue are just simply not my type of customer so I don’t get discouraged. Im also learning to say no which is definitely hard.
I also want to mention how much I appreciate you talking about the challenges that us home bakers have to handle. I found myself nodding yes a ton throughout the video.
I live in Australia so don’t have the nostalgic memories of walking into a grocerie store and asking for a cookie from the bakery but kids can get a free piece of fruit from the fruit/vegetable section of the grocery store. Also, the editing of this video is both hilarious and awesome. Great job Iulia.

I’m loving the new style of this video! It’s super interesting to see all the prep work and how to develop and set up your videos. As a viewer it creates more buildup and makes me even more invested in the end results:) looking forward to what you two do this year!
Last baker could have done a chocolate ball with the red stuff inside (a well tempered chocolate should not be difficult to cut into) Edit. Iulia is indeed a fabulous editor, thanks for your hard work 🫶🏻
For our wedding we did a 2 tier cake that served 30 for 550 with delievery and set up. This was from an at home baker who was actually was the winner of crime scene kitchen we watched during covid. We were very happy with our custom cake. She even offered ro do a free aniversary cake so we didn't need to save tge top tier. 😊
Iulia is very very talented.. makes everything look slick and seamless.. love this channel, I have went out and purchased a table top mixer so I can learn how to make homemade cakes and frosting, I’ve been practicing my flower making skills, learning how to make sugar flowers as well.. not as easy as it looks for sure… thanks for doing everything that your entire team does..
iulia does a fantastic job at editing! as an editor i understand how time consuming and tedious it can be sometimes but her work is great, she always seem to give her 100% so kudos to her!!
Our grocery store still does the free cookie! My 3 yr old LOVES going grocery shopping for that reason only😂 Lulia is doing an amazing job I ❤ her editing style
The grocery store cookies! I can't believe you unlocked a childhood memory! One of our local chains did cookies and one did cheese sticks (the breadstick-like product, not like, string cheese or mozzarella sticks - and now I'm wondering if cheese sticks were a regional thing because I feel like I don't see them in grocery stores anymore?) and I vividly remember always going back to the bakery and asking for whichever one was at that store and they almost always had them there behind the counter!
Kevin u are hilarious, Iulia you do a fantastic job keeping up withthese two, Laurie I loved this video, more plz looking forward to the next!! Hope u get to see TS soon!!
One of our local grocery stores still gives out free cookies to kids. They stopped for covid and then started again after. I didn't know about it either until a worker there told us because my 5 year old told her she was working too hard.. 😂 My kids now constantly ask to go to "the cookie store" 😂
I bake the cakes for all the birthdays in my family, and when it’s my bday and they ask what kind of cake I want, I always say a Publix cake lol bc I just love the change and the nostalgia as you said lol and they’re really good too lol their buttercream is so unique and yummy and I can never replicate it.
Love Publix cake…their basic vanilla w/ vanilla icing is what we get most often…we just had one for Thanksgiving & Christmas… The carrot cake bar is also great, and the chocolate ganache supreme w/ yellow cake, instead of chocolate, is my personal favorite!
@@Lynastia-TheS1lly please share when you do lol altho I think it’s premade and shipped it them or it’s like packets of premade stuff they mix with other stuff.

The last one is definitely worth the price! So pretty and much more tastefully designed than a lot of cakes. That would be my biggest issue with spending so much on a cake, when it comes out big, but to brightly colored or just looking cartoony.
Iulia does a great job editing these videos! Also just the fact that Lauri knew exactly what he meant by his secret'; and I love Kevin's road trip conversations 😆
This makes me want to show you how my daughter’s grocery store Wednesday birthday cake came out this year. I was actually very impressed. They didn’t have a deco set for it, I told her she could have freedom with it, and it was simple, but perfect.
These cakes made me so happy and how fun was that last one! 🔪 What would you use if you were to make a cake similar to that? Shoutout to Iulia for her great editing skills! 👏🏻
When the How to Cook That channel made the blank space cake, she made a box out of white chocolate the same shape as the cake, then put it on top and frosted over everything to make it all look like cake.
I so relate to Kevin forgetting what he was about to say midsentence, but I'm sure Iulia can edit him appear coherent. I think, visually, I liked the most expensive cake the best, but I really appreciate the writing on the grocery store cake, and I liked the simplicity of it. The $50 cake didn't fully capture the Taylor vibe, but the snake was adorable. I think How to Cook That made a blank space cake when the music video came out, or something with a similar idea, and I'm sure it wasn't a balloon.
'Cause of your channel, I made my own cake and decorated it. Everyone said something along the lines of it looked too good to be real 😆 Thanks for the inspo!
I worked at a Loeb Grocery store and we definitely had free cookies! It was called the Loeb Cookie Club, with a cookie of the day and even had a mascot, Kookie! (google helped me remember his name!)
No way! I have those very same nostalgic memories of going into a grocery store with my mom and asking if we could walk by the bakery section, so I could ask them if they have any cookies and they almost always did until I was like a preteen and then it appears they stopped doing it entirely.
@@weaverofbrokenthreadsyou saying that reminds me of the fact ours always had little cheese tasting trays on top of the counter until they stopped for some reason 🤔
I remember the free cookies and infact not too long ago at my small town grocery store the baker came up to my kids and offered them a cookie! I dont pay for cakes, I either make them or use a box mix. I try to keep birthday parties to $100 for food and decorations so all these cakes are out of my budget, but I do understand why they cost what they do.
I’m guessing cake #2 used premade icing in a tub. That’s why it tasted flavourless. They just added vanilla to mask the shortening. So they just had to colour the icing. Don’t know how cake #3 for $65 made any money?? Edible image paper isn’t cheap. Cake #4 is pretty much what $110 will get you. As you know ingredients are pricey and you have to make a profit. But yikes a balloon in a cake…oh my. Soooo dangerous unless you’ve been forewarned. Last cake is the winner for the price. And great editing job Iulia. 👍👍
@@TheIcingArtist Oh ya….can’t believe baker didn’t tell you about the balloon!!! Giant no no. Technically, they could lose their license if you reported to the health department 🫢🫢
@@Clarky1951plus, I have a latex allergy. So I mean obviously I can't eat a cake with a balloon in it but a popping balloon aerosolizes laxtex all over the place.
@@owentheslug Absolutely!!! I mean I have arguments all the time on my cakey fb pages. Especially about “real” flowers, and wires in cakes. I use to sell cakes, and I know there are strict health guidelines and protocols. I never made cakes for people with specific allergies, like nuts or celiac. Because I couldn’t say I had a 100% contaminant free kitchen. Couldn’t guarantee no cross transfer. Would never take the risk of making someone extremely I’ll, possibly life threatening.
@@Clarky1951 oh, also? florist tape not food safe, flowers (real or fake) unless purchased specifically for food product not food safe. sounds like you know this but it's amazing how many people don't
Loved watching this! & loved how you explained the cost; when I first started out fresh out of high school everyone always complained about me charging more than the grocery store, mind you I also only bake eggless... It was discouraging and I stopped selling cakes. But now this year I started up again because I missed it & it's nice to see more people willing to pay & some even give tips! There's a lot of work that goes into baking that people don't understand so it was nice seeing it explained!
'I can go to the grocery store and pay.......' My response to this is, yes, you could. I'm not selling mass manufactured grocery store cakes, I'm selling homemade and individually decorated custom cakes. You can pay $25 for a pair of sneaks at Wally World, too. But you don't go into the Nike store and order Jordan's expecting to pay what you would for Walmart shoes!
Happy New Year! I bought an ice cream cake from Dairy Queen for my grand-daughters 5th birthday last August and only spent $38. It had a Unicorn on it and served 8-10, but it was really rich, so it went further cause a small slice was filling. Hi Julia! You do an awesome job with editing. Tell Kevin I watched the video from start to finish....LOL LOL LOL
Number 4 would have had to go straight into the trash & i would have to had someone else clean the whole area it was in. I have a laxtex allergy, I know it's not a super high number of people that have it but it's not unheard of. I would rather have any cake from the grocery store than something where they opt to add things like that. At least the grocery store tells you what's in the cake.
I personally prefer just cake/dessert centric videos, but I understand that this is starting to move towards a "lifestyle"/funny style video channel and I think I just have to accept it.

Hi Iulia! Kevin not being able to track his current thought in a sentence has me dying 😂
Iulia thanks for your hard work! Love that you guys wanted at acknowledge her 😊❤
I want Kevin to take us on trips every time, and for Iulia to never stop with that top notch editing!
When I was a kid the local supermarket butcher used to give us a free mini Frankfurt. Not as good as a cookie, but not bad either lol
IULIA is bae ❤
same here in the uk x
Some stores in the USA have free fruit for kids too. Usually a small orange/Clementine or a banana.
I love the idea of kids being allowed a free piece of fruit in the grocery store. It helps promote healthy eating, even it’s only a little bit.
Used to get a free little red sausage, cherio from deli. Even my kids got them on occasion before you could get fruit.
I enjoyed watching Kevin go and get the cakes, and Iulia's work on the videos is absolutely phenomenal
an icing artist video but make it taylor eras themed. hands down best day of my life. TY LAURIE FOR MAKING MY DAY ❤❤❤ (and tysm iulia for editing these vids lysm)
I've been dying to do something Taylor Swift for so long!!
@@TheIcingArtist 💗💗💗
Iulia's editing is top-tier! Also...so much more fun watching Kevin pick up the cakes and losing his train of thought😂
Thank you Iulia for making such wonderful videos and edits! they turn out amazing everytime, congrats for being on the team!! 👏
I’m loving the new style of this video! It’s super interesting to see all the prep work and how to develop and set up your videos. As a viewer it creates more buildup and makes me even more invested in the end results:) looking forward to what you two do this year!
Last baker could have done a chocolate ball with the red stuff inside (a well tempered chocolate should not be difficult to cut into)
Edit.
In Croatia near Rijeka , standard cake for 12 people is 50-60 euros. If you want some picture or some figures than is from 80-120 euros.
I like the ride along with Kevin picking up the cake. And good job Iulia editing.
iulia does a fantastic job at editing! as an editor i understand how time consuming and tedious it can be sometimes but her work is great, she always seem to give her 100% so kudos to her!!
Our grocery store still does the free cookie! My 3 yr old LOVES going grocery shopping for that reason only😂 Lulia is doing an amazing job I ❤ her editing style
Thanks kevin for the road trip and thanks Iulia for your work on the editing. You are amazing.
Thank you Iulia. You do amazing work and help bring peace to my days when I see that there is a new Icing Artist video!!!
Iulia does a great job editing these videos!
She's the best!!!
Publix gives free cookies to children chocolate chip or sugar cookies in the bakery area
IULIA YOU ARE AWESOME!!! Seriously thank you for editing these awesome videos for Laurie
Okay I'm totally loving this behind the scenes ride-along with Kevin! I hope we see more of that.
This is the only video I’ve seen with you picking up the cakes. I didn’t even skip it. Great job Iulia
Kevin u are hilarious, Iulia you do a fantastic job keeping up withthese two, Laurie I loved this video, more plz looking forward to the next!!
Hope u get to see TS soon!!
iulia does such a good job editing these amazing videos! Thank you so much for editing these videos for us to watch
One of our local grocery stores still gives out free cookies to kids. They stopped for covid and then started again after. I didn't know about it either until a worker there told us because my 5 year old told her she was working too hard.. 😂 My kids now constantly ask to go to "the cookie store" 😂
Iluia clearly does a great job with attention to detail regarding your videos. ❤
I love seeing Kevin picking up cakes! Please keep this in the future. so much fun!
Love Publix cake…their basic vanilla w/ vanilla icing is what we get most often…we just had one for Thanksgiving & Christmas…
The carrot cake bar is also great, and the chocolate ganache supreme w/ yellow cake, instead of chocolate, is my personal favorite!
Yes! I need to find out how they do their icing. I know the QA manager of the ATL bakery, so I guess should just ask lol
@@Lynastia-TheS1lly please share when you do lol altho I think it’s premade and shipped it them or it’s like packets of premade stuff they mix with other stuff.
Iulia is a fantastic editor! Loving the time with Kevin.
Iulia is a great editor and i would never skip that part im glad yall inlcuded you going to get them it was really fun to watch and he has the best vibe lol and i also start sentences having no clue where there going and my memory is awful 😂
The last one is definitely worth the price! So pretty and much more tastefully designed than a lot of cakes. That would be my biggest issue with spending so much on a cake, when it comes out big, but to brightly colored or just looking cartoony.
Iulia does an amazing job at editing! Absolutely love how they turn out!
Iulia does a FABULOUS job on editing!! Always love the videos! 💕💕💕💕✨
Iulia does a great job editing these videos! Also just the fact that Lauri knew exactly what he meant by his secret'; and I love Kevin's road trip conversations 😆
Thank you Iulia for the wonderful editing!
There's the blow up!
Thank you Lulia 💕
Thanks for all of your hard work Iulia!
This makes me want to show you how my daughter’s grocery store Wednesday birthday cake came out this year. I was actually very impressed. They didn’t have a deco set for it, I told her she could have freedom with it, and it was simple, but perfect.
Iulia, you're doing an amazing job with these videos!
IULIA does an amazing job editing these videos! What a rockstar she is!!!
'Cause of your channel, I made my own cake and decorated it. Everyone said something along the lines of it looked too good to be real 😆 Thanks for the inspo!
More road trip moments. I want to see Kevin’s reaction as he sees it before Lori does.
Well done Iulia for making Kevin’s road trip be hilarious! Laurie’s not bad either 🤣
Loved all the cakes but I’m a big Swiftie too ❤
I worked at a Loeb Grocery store and we definitely had free cookies! It was called the Loeb Cookie Club, with a cookie of the day and even had a mascot, Kookie! (google helped me remember his name!)
Okay Kevin’s lil roadtrips with us is so much fun! I would love to see more ❤
Perfect trio! I’m so glad Iulia is there to be part of it all and distribute the pressure a little :)
No way! I have those very same nostalgic memories of going into a grocery store with my mom and asking if we could walk by the bakery section, so I could ask them if they have any cookies and they almost always did until I was like a preteen and then it appears they stopped doing it entirely.
HOW DIDN'T I KNOW THIS
We used to get a piece of sausage from the butcher at the grocery store
I definitely remember getting free cookies 🍪
@@weaverofbrokenthreadsyou saying that reminds me of the fact ours always had little cheese tasting trays on top of the counter until they stopped for some reason 🤔
I remember the free cookies.
Yes!!!! I agree with everything! And the last cake blew my mind, but omg the balloon lol!!! I was shocked!
I-U-L-I-A loving that you spelled out your name as Kevin said it. We all love and appreciate your behind-the-scenes work! ✨✨✨
'I can go to the grocery store and pay.......'
My response to this is, yes, you could.
Laurie, you're definitely the queen of custom cake decorating.
The grocery store cake was so cute in execution. I love it. So sweet and charming.
Another fun video! Love y’all’s personalities! Also…hello Iulia! :) I love that y’all are blessing others with the opportunity to work for you! ❤
Hey love from South Africa ❤
I'm also from south Africa😅
I personally prefer just cake/dessert centric videos, but I understand that this is starting to move towards a "lifestyle"/funny style video channel and I think I just have to accept it.
I agree with you. Sometimes I like more behind of scenes but most of the times I jump to the next section from the video. A variety would be awesome 🎉
IULIA is so great thank you for making the last step of the videos possible to be able to post !!!! ❤❤ keep up the great work 👏 👍 👏
I actually love how there was no intro, thats the part where I get bored, it was straight into it, love it
Iulia’s editing is top notch!
She guarantees the video keeps the entertaining pace
I liked the format of this video! Definitely still like the regular format too, but it was fun seeing Kevin more. Go Iulia!
Loveddd this video!!! Your guy's videos always have such a fun positive vibe to them!! Extra love for Iulia ♥️♥️
Iulia we thank and appreciate you for editing the videos so good.. Kevin we can never skip the short road trip talks...❤
Iulia even though we don’t see you in a lot of videos your editing shows how amazing you are!!!!
