They found him singing in a dumpy bar in their hometown of Winnipeg. Randy was told: You gotta hear this guy belt out 'House of the Rising Sun.' And the rest is history...
Totally badass song. The great late drummer Robbie Bachman, the guitar playing, the lead singer, great band from Winnipeg, Canada. Awesome reaction as always.
"...times real short, and the distance is long. I'd like to have a jet, but it's not in the song....." One of the most overlooked, brilliant lines of song lyrics ever written in rock history.
I was at school and we crossed the Ambassador Bridge to Detroit because BTO was in town. They were a a very big deal . It was like they were set up for arena rock. You had to see the entire wall was amps and speakers. At the time that much volume was unheard of. It was so loud it hurt.. but we loved it. You felt the thump as much as heard it. And this song in particular was written to be loud and hard. Everything was 50% more than anything that preceded it. It was visceral. The hysteria and the loud was AC/DC before arena rock became a thing. This was ground breaking. Fred Turner's voice was loud in its own right but through those amps and those speakers it was so loud you couldn't hear yourself think. In its own way the best concert..ever.
BJ gets it! This song came out when I was a teenage motorhead, out running around with my friends in muscle cars. This was one of a handful of songs that would inspire us to put the hammer down, our foot in the carburetor so to speak.
The lyrics are hilarious “Times real short you know the distance is long I’d rather have a jet but it’s not in the song” Love it!!! Great song from a great band!!!! Takes me back! I’m
Guys this is off their Not Fragile Album. I’ve still got my original copy. It was an Iconic 70’s albums. This is my personal fav from that album. And yea it’s a check your speed on the Highway Song. It’s so cool seeing you youngins rockin out to the soundtrack of my life ❤️
"Our music sure did and still does...ROCK!!! and I too, Sir, have my original copy, bought it at Woolworth's, got most of my original albums still, but don't play them any more, I'm trying to hang on to them as long as possible, I've got "digital" of alot of my albums on it, but, it's not really the same sometimes...Rock ON!
Randy Bachman was part of The Guess Who & then went on to form BTO. Both were great Canadian rock bands. BTO had a lot of great songs in the 70's such as "Takin' Care Of Business", "Hey You", "Lookin' Out For #1" etc.
Mid-70s Canadian teen boy here. BTO and Rush were the TWO major bands of the day. Rush was intellectual and progressive. BTO was working-class rock gods. Dive deeper and BTO won't disappoint.
Saw Randy Bachman playing along with Felix Cavaliere (Rascals), John Entwistle (Who), Billy Preston (need no intro) who were backing Ringo Starr and his All Star Band. It didn't suck.
I was going to our nearest big city to shop and this song came on the radio. I noticed that when a nice vehicle would roll past us, the beat in this song made it look more badass like the wheels rolling in perfect time. Then I noticed, big trucks, even ugly cars looked cooler. So definitely a good song for "rolling down the highway."
47 years ago today I saw BTO in Houston. I bought my ticket at the door and walked up to the stage. REO Speedwagon opened up for them. I saw so many of these bands from that time period that you react to. It was so great to see and hear so much great music.
I listened to every song on this album often when I was a kid (maybe 10?) because my older sister had the album and played it a lot! It reminds me of fun and good times. I am so glad I got to grow up in the 70's with some of the best music ever!
Nice reaction. BTO is so good, many great tracks. Brings back memories when I was stationed at Peterson Field, Colorado Springs rolling down the road in my 70 SS Chevelle and 69 RS Camaro...
Another one from my 8-Track case back on the seventies. This would get into trouble when you were rolling down the highway and it came on. Something about that right pushing down and staying down.
as a young german boy at the age of 14 i got contact in 1976 to the music of bto for the first time. Since then i joined the music and the wonderful rocky rollin Sound of the Band. especially i like the strong voice of fred Turner, the hardest in music buisiness. please Stay healthy and Go on randy and fred, youre are huge Not great.
I was in the Air Force in 1974 and was stationed on a communication site out in the middle of nowhere. I had a 1973 dodge charger and it was around 20 miles to Minot North Dakota. I used to drive as fast as my car would go listening to this song. Luckily I never crashed or or got pulled over.
Thanks for this. As a kid growing up in Canada, we grew up with BTO. Been awhile, brings back some great memories. Here's another Road classic you may want to have a listen to from that time also. Remember the Dutch band Golden Earing?. They formed a year before the Rolling Stones. Their end finally came in 2021 as their founding band member was diagnosed with ALS. The song was "Radar Love". Check it out.
I saw BTO in Detroit in 1987 at Harpos. They were backing up Van Halen at Joe Louis Arena the same night. Went to Harpos later to headline. What a hard working band!
BTO Never put out a bad song!!! Always on point!!!! And one of the most underrated Rock bands in music and one of the most popular ones at the same time!!!! Love them!!! I know when they did a concert at Raleigh Fields in Sacramento in 2006...the OG's toe it up!!! Had all of us jumping up and down.....they're soooooooooooooooooooo good!!!!
Great driving song too rock out! Also check out Takin' Care Of Business and You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet, the best studder song next to My Generation from The Who.
Per Wikipedia Turner and Randy Bachman had originally been contracted by Ford to write a song for the automotive company's commercials, but Ford never picked up any of their compositions. Robbie Bachman later helped develop one of Turner's ideas into a Top 20 hit. "Roll on Down the Highway" peaked at No. 14 on the US Billboard Hot 100 on March 1, 1975. It reached No. 8 on the Cash Box Top 100 singles, and No. 4 on the Canadian RPM chart, and gave the band their second - and final - hit in the United Kingdom, reaching No. 22 in the UK Singles Chart.
I heard that Randy Bachman returns to play with his former bandmate, Burton Cummings on tour. Bachman & Cummings are the founders of The Guess Who before Randy left the band to form Bachman Turner Overdrive
What a voice!!! Fred Turner. Randy Bachman, too. Among the best in rock. Yes, this song Could make you drive faster, lol, I know it has me. Especially when the top is down on my Mustang. Good thing for radar detector and laser shift 🤣 Oh ya.....
Heck, when this song was popular, I drove a '72 Ford Maverik and it made me feel like I was in a Corvette. I had 3 BTO 8-Tracks in my car at all times.
@@davidkessinger1581 I had a '71 Ford Torino back in the day. My 2003 Mustang may not be amongst the Mustang "elite" but it's a convertible and I enjoy every Wisconsin summer moment with the top down.
Me in my 500hp '72 Nova, my buddy in his "67 GTO heading for concerts side by side at 120mph handing beers from car to car. How are we still alive? Lol
I was in high school when this came out. I used to listen to this song on the way to first period class, so i did not need any Caffeine in those days. Added to that, we would listen to Ted Nugent, and The WHO before class, yeah, those were the days !
First time hearing awesome, reminded me of going down the autobahn in my cousins porsche, an awesome experience. You could also play this song when you want to let something go. 🤗
When I won a feildgoal contest at a bar during the halftime show ( when Norwood missed the kick versus Dallas Cowboys) I could of went to Slayer , but instead I chose to see Bachman Turner Overdrive "BTO" . Great music to party with, fun fun fun.
There are two men, and two men only, to have written and recorded two number one records in two different groups... Paul McCartney in The Beatles and Wings, and Randy Bachman, in The Guess Who and BTO...
Thanks so much for doing the Long Version instead of the "Single" version. So how about something a little different with the title track from the album this was on "Not Fragile". More of Turner's growling vocals ahead.
If you want to hear their true scope, listen next to Blue Collar. Their masterpiece, and who would have thought those rockers could make some great jazz? Far more complex musically and lyrically than their other songs. Looking Out For #1 is another wonderful deviation from their typical sound, but I'd say Blue Collar first.
Fred Turner had/has the most savage voice in Rock history. Not even close.
Hard to argue that with Blackie Lawless a close second.
You got that right
Agreed 💯..and a kick ass bass player
They found him singing in a dumpy bar in their hometown of Winnipeg. Randy was told: You gotta hear this guy belt out 'House of the Rising Sun.' And the rest is history...
Tribute to Robbie Bachman's passing today. Great drummer, loved this group.
Robbie
RIP Robbie,. He's jamming with Tim and Jim.
Totally badass song. The great late drummer Robbie Bachman, the guitar playing, the lead singer, great band from Winnipeg, Canada. Awesome reaction as always.

Yup! Right to the floor and into the engine compartment! Ha, ha! We were awfully wild sometimes back in the good old days! 😎😎😎
The lyrics are hilarious
“Times real short you know the distance is long
I’d rather have a jet but it’s not in the song”
Love it!!!
Great song from a great band!!!!
Takes me back! I’m

Givin It All Away - sensational song - RIP Robbie Backman - 😢
Bought my vinal, which I still have, at Grants on Route 32.

Emerson ,Lake and Palmer tried to recrute Randy. He turned them down
he left The Guess Who because of the drug use by the band members. Randy is a strict Mormon and didn't want to be around it.
THANK YOU! Love your reactions. BEING OPEN MINDED ALLOWS US TO GROW.!
This band was so good and sadly they can easily be forgotten when talking about the great bands of the day.
Mid-70s Canadian teen boy here. BTO and Rush were the TWO major bands of the day. Rush was intellectual and progressive. BTO was working-class rock gods. Dive deeper and BTO won't disappoint.
Asia & BJ, you would like their “Hey You” for your 5th BTO song!
Saw Randy Bachman playing along with Felix Cavaliere (Rascals), John Entwistle (Who), Billy Preston (need no intro) who were backing Ringo Starr and his All Star Band. It didn't suck.
Burton Cummings also did a stint with the All Star Band.

Then I noticed, big trucks, even ugly cars looked cooler. So definitely a good song for "rolling down the highway."
Rest in peace Robbie Bachman. A phenomenal drummer, and co founder of this legendary band.
One of the songs that defines what rock sounds like.

Saw them in the late 70’s in Dallas. They opened for Foghat. BTO about took over the show.
1981 BTO opens for UFO in San Bernardino swing auditorium great concert ✌️
YES---- definitely rolling down the highway music blaring....😎
Nice reaction. BTO is so good, many great tracks. Brings back memories when I was stationed at Peterson Field, Colorado Springs rolling down the road in my 70 SS Chevelle and 69 RS Camaro...
Cool!
Some big hits from this band back in the early 1970’s. Randy Bachman was an original member of The Canadian band The Guess Who
Driving my dads 1960 MGA top down speeding to this song in 1975! LET'S ROLL!!!!!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥💖💖💖💖💖
I literally have not heard this song in forty years easily. Thanks, guys.
But I knew it instantly.
Another one from my 8-Track case back on the seventies.
This would get into trouble when you were rolling down the highway and it came on.
Something about that right pushing down and staying down.
This and Golden Ear Rings "Radar Love" are two of my favorites to crank all the way up and cruise down the road.
Great top 20 song for this Canadian band from 1975.
as a young german boy at the age of 14 i got contact in 1976 to the music of bto for the first time. Took me back to 1975!! Our graduating class favorite band!!!
Some great guitar riffs from Randy Bachman & team!
My favorite song by BTO! It's on almost all my playlists, or always had the CD in my car, or the album on the stereo. Enjoyed your reaction, guys!
This is the type of band, If you heckled them on stage, they'd stop playing, kick your ass, then finish the set.
Or at least they looked like they would.
Damn straight
Love you two thanks for being musically well rounded, I used to listen to this on an 8 track tape going a hundred miles an hour in my hot rod
You do realize that the term "8 track" fates you, eh? LOL! Me too! 💘🎸😏😎
This song makes you wanna go get on the highway and drive, drive, drive! Rollin'!
Good one, y'all.
Many a speeding ticket was acquired whilst listening to this song!
This brings back memories of driving with the top down, wind blowin’ thru your hair and great music playing.
My favorite driving song in my youth.
Glad you got to this one…they were great rockers.Hitmakers who went from a great group Guess Who to them…
I was in the Air Force in 1974 and was stationed on a communication site out in the middle of nowhere. I had a 1973 dodge charger and it was around 20 miles to Minot North Dakota. I used to drive as fast as my car would go listening to this song. Luckily I never crashed or or got pulled over.
I WAS WITH YOU IN SPIRIT!!!! : )
Best music ever. Fun to dance to ❤

This was definitely a skating rink song when I was little. Love BTO!
I saw BTO in Detroit in 1987 at Harpos. They were backing up Van Halen at Joe Louis Arena the same night. Went to Harpos later to headline. What a hard working band!
Saw Randy in Toronto years ago. He was at the Bandshell at the CNE. They openned with this! Great song!
A good song for on a road trip. Also check out Hey You.
“Time’s real short, you know the distance is long.”
This whole album rocks, it was the first one of theirs I ever bought. Sledge Hammer is a killer tune.
Definitely one of my "get a ticket" songs. Thank God for cruise control
BTO what a great band !!
So many good times to take you on down that road.
1:46 Time's real short and you know the distance is long. I like to have a jet, but it's not in the song.
Probably one of my favorite lyrics ever
Fred Turner and Leslie West give me the same vibe vocally!!!! Gritty
Great driving song too rock out! Also check out Takin' Care Of Business and You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet, the best studder song next to My Generation from The Who.
Great Canadian band, they made us proud.
Listened to them for endless hours one of the great bands of the seventies try home in my hand or not fragile love you two
I’m pretty sure it’s a sin not having this old tune on your road trip playlist 😆
Let It Ride next by BTO
My first concert was these guys. I was 17…1975
I love BTO, Awesome Song.

Another good song choice. BTO had so many great hits. Hope you guys will check out their song Hey You. Probably my fav 🔥
Northern Illinois University. ‘Happy Hour’ at one of DeKalb, Illinois favorite ‘watering holes’. This blasting on the juke box. Those were the Days.
Me in my 500hp '72 Nova, my buddy in his "67 GTO heading for concerts side by side at 120mph handing beers from car to car.
How are we still alive? Lol
This such a fun group. The first concert I ever attended.
I think they’re talking about the trucking business.
I've rolled down the highway before, two knees holding the wheel steady with two hands Rollin' ,if y'all know what I mean 😉
Other great "highway" songs are:
1) "Rockin' Down The Highway" by The Doobie Brothers
2) "Highway Song" by Blackfoot
3) "Ventura Highway" by America
I was in high school when this came out. I used to listen to this song on the way to first period class, so i did not need any Caffeine in those days. Added to that, we would listen to Ted Nugent, and The WHO before class, yeah, those were the days !
BTO Will Kick the Building Down

Rock Is My Life and This Is My Song is another good one from BTO.
BTO ,that's one guitar, with distorsion and the other guitar clean as possible. And the lead guitar is the clean one .I like it like that.
This the type of song that’ll get you a speeding ticket JUST AS BJ said it
Fred Turner is the lead vocalist on this song.
Truth : this song will add 25mph to your highway speed and you won't even realize it. 😮
Good summer time music. Miss those days..70's
Thanks for listening
I still have this vinyl record.
I was in highschool when this song was released
Awwww awesome when i was in Junior high!!
Gets my foot heavy on the accelerator pedal in my 69 383 4 speed Plymouth road runner!
My University time, they're great musicians
