They didn't put lyrics on 8tracks and cassettes and only a few albums in the early years. You had to be a real fanatic to know the lyrics or what they meant. We just rocked out to the whole sound.

I've listened to this song FOREVER, and other than the chorus, I never knew what they were singing - and, frankly, I didn't care. It was a guitar jam - end of story.

  • @resin_Hd
    @resin_Hd ปีที่แล้ว +20

Brad had it. “Rolling” was a slang I guess in the 60’s/70’s for cruising. It’s the story of a band that isn’t big enuff yet to have a big crew. So after they finished playing they loaded up the truck and headed to the next city. They wanted to get there fast as possible but also avoid getting pulled over by the PD.

The wheels are what's rolling when they say let it roll. They were driving a semi - said so at the beginning of the song, so there's a lot of wheels rolling on down the highway. When you're driving, time equals money.

Hey there guicho gf ............Much Aroha (Love and respect)_ to you and your uncle
You are so right....................for me BTO was the greatest Canadian band of all time.
They were down to earth, loud, genuine and played 'old school' music in a way that i miss so much.
I remember the days, i used to just hop in the car, windows down, destination unknown and just play their music................ Roll on down the highway, You ain't seen nothing yet, taking care of business etc etc
      Days never to be forgotten.

I was a teenager living in the Outer Banks (Hatteras) back in the early to mid 70's. We couldn't get albums unless we traveled to Elizabeth City which is approx 120 miles away. We had friends get them for us when they travelled that way. This album was one that we were lucky enough to get. We played it constantly. Drove my parents nuts. Wow- how times have changed. Now this old man just loads it on the smart phone.😀

I've listened to this song hundreds of times over the years and I never could make out the line "I'd like to have a jet but it's not in the song." Tonight, I learned. And laughed! And then right after this gem of a line, y'all get into a discussion about the word "roll," which I thought was kinda weird. Here's the deal on that: A wheel cannot roll by itself.

  • @MrDstocum

BTO was a band that brought reverence to the truck driving profession! There was a trucker magazine in the 70s called Overdrive, and if not mistaken their name was a nod to that magazine.

Before they were known as BTO, the band was called Brave Belt. Randy Bachman started Brave Belt with younger brother Robbie after he left The Guess Who along with original Guess Who lead singer Chad Allan. Later, Tim Bachman and C. Fred Turner would join the band. Brave Belt originally started as a country-rock outfit with Allan on lead vocal but evolved to the hard rock direction with Turner on lead vocal that would presage BTO's sound. Robbie Bachman's most significant contribution to Brave Belt aside from his drumming was co-writing the song "Summer Soldier".

The song is about the band driving down the highway and being excited about making money and being successful along with the pitfalls or problems that may go along with it, like tickets or maybe being busted for pot or something if pulled over. It's as simple as 1, 2, 3.

We Gotta Roll, back in the day of this song, meant we have got to get going. So Roll=Going, as in this case, Gotta Roll to our next GIG. Basically the band is lost trying to first find the right town, then the right location.

The term "rolling" is a colloquialism used to describe one's moving on, moving forward, leaving a destination or traveling to a destination, though it also has a multitude of other connotations.
Example; " let's get rolling" or
    " let's roll".
    Meaning; let's leave.
    You had to be there..

    Doubt it's about drugs lol.
Most likely a trucker, worker type song. Motivation type song. Been on lots of commercials, TV shows, movies, etc too.
Lot of BTO songs are like this. "Taking Care of Business" is another great one from them. As well as "Let It Ride" and "You Aint Seen Nothing Yet', etc. Songs from the '70s and '80s.
Bachman son and nephew, Tal also had songs during the late '90s and '00s. Such as "She's So High", "If You Sleep", "Aeroplane", etc.

Incidentally, in reference to the possibility of the song having a drug connotation, I believe that the members of the band did not do drugs. In fact, I remember Randy Bachman saying part of the reason he left the Guess Who (amicably) when they were peaking was because he didn't like being around the drug scene. Also believe he's Mormon.

Two brothers in this band Robby and Randy Bachman. Randy played with The Guess Who (American Woman) before BTO.
The original lineup consisted of Randy Bachman (lead guitar, lead vocals), Fred Turner (bass guitar, lead vocals), Tim Bachman (guitar, vocals) and Robbie Bachman (drums). This lineup released two albums in 1973. The second and most commercially successful lineup featured Blair Thornton (lead guitar), in place of Tim Bachman. This lineup released four albums between 1974 and 1977, including two that reached the top 5 in the U.S. pop charts, as well as the band's only U.S. No. 1 single ("You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet"). Subsequent lineups enjoyed only moderate success.

BTO was a great band. This song has a lot of energy and was a big hit on FM radio back when I was alive. I thank them for the minutes/hours/years of enjoyment they provided me. Writing great music ain't as easy as fishin'.

Roll'n is just keeping the wheels turning As the line said. You gotta keep driving if you want to make a buck. ie; Getting to the next Gig.

When you stop the song in the middle. Then talked about "the meaning of roll". I think somebody "rolled" something before they recorded this. Luv Yinz.

Randy Bachman had converted to Mormonism well before this song was released so you can be pretty sure any song he wrote for BTO was not about drug consumption.

In the 70s, we rolled. Meaning you we moving, let's roll= to leave. You rolled, let it roll, roll with it, it was just a slang word. This song is about truck drivers, they don't get paid if they aren't rolling. Driving fast, trying not to get stopped by the police.

They did have cruise control in the 70's. My Monte Carlo had it.

Brad mentioned how many speeding tickets?...
For me at least, my right foot got heavy while listening to this song, and I must admit, it still dose!
I'm 60, and music ("my taste in music") still triggers emotions, memories, & in certain situations, my personality & sometimes my actions upon hearing it.
I enjoy watching your reactions to the music that I grew up with.
    Keep on, keeping on!
    Cheers!

I think I can explain the rolling thing. Yeah, it became a popular expression of hey man let's get rolling for let's roll down the road. But picture it in terms of the trucks they're using to transport their gear from city to city because they can't afford a plane like bands like Deep Purple at the time for example. So when you say your rolling down the road, there's a sense that you're barreling down the road and that you've got an awful lot of weight and momentum and mass with you.
But it's very driven because he even mentions the engine size in one of the verses, but the idea is that to say we're rolling is a whole lot more momentum-oriented and formidable and has a lot more attitude to it than just saying, we were driving down the road. That last one actually ends up being the passive thing to say.

Randy Bachman left the Guess Who because of the drug use of the other members so i'm gonna say rolling is what wheels do.

Randy also left due to him having a dozen gall stones which were causing him a lot of pain, he needed an operation to remove them, the Guess Who's constant touring was taking a strain on Randy's general health and he needed a break, so he chose to leave The Guess Who when they had a #1 album and single with "American Woman".

This is different. It's often Brad whose comments are so off target you wonder why he's thinking that. This time it's Lex. Bitchin' song about bein' in a hurry driving down the freeway, something which I guess Lex has never experienced as a fun thing to do. Always loved this song.

It's old slang for go. As in, "let's roll" (let's go) " Roll up on someone". " we rolled in to town". Also slang for go is "get cracking", "let's crack", let's slide", let's boogie, "let's cruise," "let's blow", and a hundred others.
