    What a wonderful symphony this, no. 12 is! There are certain commentators who have rather played this one down. Goodness knows why! There are so many ways that various themes - and there are quite a few - have been used in so many different contexts, styles, tempi, etc etc. What a genius dear Shostakovitch was! Of course -- you don`t need me to tell you that ! As far as this performance goes - well -- the word perfection comes to the fore! Thank you - musicians in Russia - so good to be able to see as well as hear you with Valery Gergiev, your conductor. Love to you all Beverley Wood.

      In general he is a brilliant conductor for Shostakovich pieces. But in my opinion, his approach to Symphony N° 5, while brilliant, lacks the essence I think Shostakovich intended... Especially for Movement 4, the finale... Personally I feel that Mvt 4 should be performed much slower, but inexorable and constantly charging forward, giving more the feel of a dictator confidently crushing through his opposition. I think Gergiev takes Mvt 4 way to fast and swift.
      But I definitely agree, in general Gergiev is absolutely perfect when it comes to conducting Shostakovich. His take on Symphony 10 is simply astounding!

      @codcdbp You are absolutely right, Mravinsky was a great Shostakovich's interpreter. He adored him but unfortunately we don't have the opportunity to listen to his interpretations live. Gergiev is the present.

      @@angela5094 I think Mravinsky's approach to Shostakovich is more ascetique than Gergiev's. Besides that I don't see Mravinsky, playing 4th or 13th symphonies ( imho not his music at all).

    the first build always forces a tear literally regardless of any mood I'm in, its brutally effective and I love how shostakovich took the rare opportunity to just do music for music. Really hits different that way. I know he technically designed this to be a story but to be frank it works better without it.

      @@fabricedieutre2658 better is quite the subjective term. Surely Id say his viola sonata and 15th symphony are his best works as when listened in the right mindset it can be pretty intense, especially his viola sonata being a testament to how he coped with his imitate death which idk what else could be more disturbingly profound. However this piece has a special energy you can't go wrong with, it is catchy, emotionally dense and void of complexities to be considered, so in that regard the 12th may be his strongest. Even stuff like 4, you have to be pretty die hard contemporary to enjoy it, which I'm all for but I'd show my mom the 12th before the 4th surely.

    Ce ne sera certainement pas " the best symphony", car elle est dédiée soit-disant à Lénine, à la Révolution d'Octobre 1917. Comme on sait qu'on a forcé la main à Chostakovitch pour qu'il adhère au Parti Communiste en 1960 et que c 'est chose faite en 1962. Cette 12 ème symphonie est achevée en février 1961. Question : Chostakovitch se sentait il communiste?

    • @ediccartman7252
      @ediccartman7252 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ecoutez la musique et pensez moins a qu'elle est dédiée. Les compositeurs ont de la chance : on peut chiffrer vos sentiments pour la personne ( et le dedicataire n'est pas l'exception , surtout si vous vivez a l'Union Sovetique ). On dit, que le theme principale de la simphonie est la citation de Sibelius ( chez lui elle parle d'un personnage populaire en Finlande, qui était tué et son corps était jeté dans la rivière ). Et tout a coup ca devient beaucoup plus interessant , et vous vous demandez si c'est vraiment la simphonie sur Lenine et pas sur Chostakovitch lui-meme.

      That’s a little extreme don’t you think? I can only imagine this symphony has a special place for most Russians (with a title like that: maybe Shostakovich should’ve called it something with less Cultural Meaning), albeit complicated by the Underwhelming Attitude many critics, especially Russians, both the Proletariat And the Soviet Establishment had towards the piece. I would agree however that this reading lacked the fire of VG’s reading with the Mariinsky of the 10th and 11th, which are EPIC imo.

    • @mason11198
      @mason11198 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's a different approach that pays more homage to the complexity of the composer. It works for fans like myself however I see how you'd get a bit tired. There's certainly conductors who would appease your interests and have a more sharp stacattoness that be more contingent with old fashioned conducting but in that regard you lose the phrasing expression. Its like how the greatest viola sonata he wrote was best preformed dead slow, surely would bore you out of your mind however for someone partial to the works of shostakovich you can fully internalize the allegory of death in his final work. For you id stay away from this music and head your way to maybe his 5th 7th 8th 10th 11th (4th maybe but thats very funky) and some concerto repetoire

    Excellent pied de nez de Chostakovitch au régime en place. Ou : comment faire une concession sans concession. Car cette symphonie est proprement mièvre, dans la droite ligne des exécrables symphonies soviétiques produites par les flagorneurs (volontaires ou non) de l'époque (Symphonie de Mossolov, symphonies de Knipper, etc.). Cette symphonie est presque inécoutable tant elle est plate, dénuée de toute âme. Il fallait célébrer la révolution de 1917 ? (Entendez le putsch malvenu de Lénine, non la révolution quelques mois plus tôt par le peuple - et principalement par les femmes ouvrières.) Qu'à cela ne tienne : Chostakovitch compose sa plus mauvaise symphonie. Comment peut-on imaginer que cette musique ait une quelconque âme de la part d'un compositeur ayant composé ses 4ème, 6ème, 8ème, 9ème, 10ème et même 11ème symphonies ? Je pense - mais ce n'est que mon avis - que prendre cette musique au sérieux, c'est faire un affront au compositeur. Et Valery Gergiev n'est pas dupe - tout comme ne l'était pas Gennadi Rozhdestvensky (qui le dévoile dans un documentaire - désolé : je n'ai plus la source exacte). Merci pour cette vidéo.
