3:03 my fave camera work of the night.
One of my favorite symphonies ever. Humbling, introspective and super interesting. Also the first movement is ridiculously exciting.
How does a composer write a symphony that is humorous and satirical but also profoundly emotional and serious, without making it seem contradictory and illogical? If he is a consummate master of his art, a supremely gifted and inspired one such as Shostakovich, he can do so in a month's time, turning out a masterpiece full of personal significance, at once enigmatic but communicative, a work of strength and beauty. Maestro Orozco-Estrada brings all these attributes in the score to life perfectly through his marvelous orchestra. Bravo!
He does it, perhaps, by recognizing that humor and satire are two of the things we turn to as deflections from the inevitability of our death -- which is, of course, what the last ten seconds of complete silence at the very end of the symphony are all about.

Hats off, gentlemen (and ladies), geniuses! Composer, conductor, and orchestra. And the audio engineering in this series borders on the miraculous.
The end of this symphony is one of the most frightening episodes in symphonic music. I don't want to speak in cinematic clichés, but it seems to me that the composer, when composing this, clearly saw the presence of Death.
I think that Shostakovich was not only one of the greatest composers in the 20th centuy, but also one of the bravest and greatest men also. What he went through, what he conveyed surreptitiously in his music, the depths of his profundity, words escape me.
I am back to hear this again and it is still just extraordinary. Great work by the percussion and the wonderful 1st chair musicians. Just another wonderful experience from a world-class orchestra and its superstar conductor.
How fresh and timeless the music by Schostacovitch sounds. Thank you
Sensitive, insightful interpretation by Maestro Orozco-Estrada, bringing much clarity to this enigmatic score. Beautiful sound from the ensemble, and beautiful solos throughout. The end of this piece gets me every time -- the final symphony of a dying man -- the major chord resolution is the quiet coda of a tortured, haunted man, finally at peace.
A symphony like marvelous Shostakovitch 15 th. can be played perfectly when you have an orchestra in which all the musicians are great soloists and very professional experienced persons.
And, last but not least, has chosen a conductor like Andrés Orozco-Estrada.

What a fabulous opening flute solo by Clara Andrada de la Calle. She is some talent!
Welche der großartigen Sinfonien Schostakowitschs man besonders mag, ist reine Geschmacksache, denn phantastisch sind sie alle. Seine letzte, voller Wärme, Ironie und Leidenschaft, hat mich am meisten überrascht. Die letzten Minuten klingen für mich so, als habe der Komponist seine eigene Beerdigung in Musik umgesetzt. Fast höre ich, wie sein Sarg ins Grab hinabfährt, völlig ohne Trauer oder Resignation. Wahrscheinlich ist Schostakowitsch für die Sinfonik des 20. Jahrhunderts der großartigste Mann nach Mahler. Und das schreibe ich als Fan von Richard Strauss :-)

This symphony has the original and perfectly defined Shostakovich's style. It reminds me a lot his piano. First piano concerto with trumpet. Awesome!!
I have been listening to Shostakovich's symphonies but never liked them very much till I saw this video. Thank you to the hr- Sinfonieorchester for making me fall in love with Shostakovich's music !

Grotesque in all the right ways, with the flute, trumpet and especially the bassoon really setting the tone in a perfect fashion. Rossini would have been tickled pink to be quoted by Shostakovich!
And a poignant lift from Wagner as well!

Agree. It probably helps that it is less well known, but all the same - what sort of a person do you have to be to think that people want to hear you interrupt the end of the piece with your loud mouth? A monster - that's who.

I was lucky enough to witness this performance live. It was the first time ever for me to listen to Shostakovich and it was SUCH a blast! The energy and dynamic of this orchestra was so amazing and this composition - I was charmed from the first second.

This is a really great performance of a masterpiece, great conductor, marvellous orchestra. Thanks to technical staff and the HR Radio to provide this perfect recordings.
The audio engineering in this series is impeccable.
My first exposure to this symphony and, as usual with Shostakovich, I was fascinated by his use of the various sections of the orchestra. The percussion section was particularly used to great effect. I will sorely miss Maestro Estrada when he joins the Vienna Philharmonic. I have grown to consider him the best conductor in the world. His Mahler is remarkable and is even better than Bernstein. And thank you TH-cam for creating such a nourishing venue for great music.
Correction please: Wiener SYMPHONIKER and NOT PHILHARMONIKER, both of which have great classical music traditions. VSO keeps a Principal/Chief Conductor while VPO has guest conductors only.
Extraordinary symphony and the conclusion is a work of genius - not only does it represent the end of his output but also the end of symphonic writing, there's been no composer to replace Shostakovich and I seriously doubt there ever will be.

Super outstanding is the less I can say! Shostakovitch music is unbelievably perfect as contemporary XX century musical art. And this fabulous orchestra HR Frankfurt conducted by Maestro Orozco-Estrada take us to other dimension : magnificent soloist and party of great musicians them all!!!

the last note, the way mr. orozco-estrada looks at the orchestra, its almost like this was shostakovich's final word as a symphonist (being his last symphony) and and he really felt that. wonderful conducter and wonderful orchestra.

That solo of the beggining is a bit difficult by the B-Eb of the low register. Many videos of YT about this symphony, the flutists cannot play those notes as Clara. She is fastastic.

This would be very easy to dismiss as a meaningless and almost trivial symphony but is actually dark and harrowing and has the emotional intensity of Mahler's ninth symphony.
And it is very much a farewell in the same vein. Even more so. Bernstein in his enthusiastic, hyperbole, called Mahler's 9th the farewell to the Symphony in general. But I think he was wrong.

This is such a young, vivacious, virtuosic, intelligent orchestra! I wonder where all the older players are in Frankfurt. Do they have a senior orchestra there somewhere? Do they retire very early? Just curious. This is the best band in the land!
@Alcina It must be a touchy, verboten subject, just as many are, there. There really are not many older players in this superb orchestra. Just coincidence? I have no idea, but a look at just about any other orchestra-CSO, e.g.-proves the point. I'm not attacking; just wondering.

What a special conductor Mr Orozco-Estrada is. It’s so apparent how the music is embedded in his heart and soul.. Something I share with him. The execution of this piece and is flawless and passionate which lends the concert its understated, compelling drama.. wonderful musicians, truly wonderful.

This piece has a deceptively playful opening, but is covertly cruel and grotesque until its malevolence is fully revealed in the fourth movement. An extraordinary piece, with a sly wink at the end as the demon saunters out unscathed. There is no one like Shostakovich!
When Shostakovich originally began sketching the 15th, he wrote to a friend he wanted to compose a "merry symphony" to mark his 65th birthday.
While finishing the piece he was afflicted with a reoccurrence of Polio as well as increasing heart problems. He wrote to friends how hard he was working to finish the 15th. Perhaps these strong reminders of his mortality crept in to the score far more than he originally intended.

If you have the time and interest to read of his remarkable life, I'd suggest "Shostakovich: A Life" by Laurel Fay.
@@davidj.7779 Unfortunately I don’t have time too read too much, but I have read Dmitri Sollertinsky’s Shostakovich book and I’m currently reading Symphony for the city of the dead. I also heard that Elizabeth Wilson’s book was good, but I’ll keep Fay in mind.

Wonderful orchestra.Poor performance thanks to the lifeless timid, conductor.I didnt think it would be possible to drain the life out of Shostakovich 15, but this guy gave it a good try.
