VALERY GERGIEV - MUSICAL DIRECTOR AND CONDUCTOR THE MARIINSKY ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS 2° DE DICIEMBRE DEL 2013 - December 2nd, 2013 TEATRO SALLE PLEYEL IN PARIS
Well it got the biggest standing ovation ever, on its's premiere. The audience stood up before it ended and the applause lasted until the theater lights went out.
This is certainly among the top ones. Have you heard the recordings of the 5th with Ashkenazy and the RPO (Decca) or Kurt Sanderling with the BSO? The latter's live recording is available on TH-cam. Sanderling consulted with Shostakovich himself.
well, this is a Russian composer being played by a Russian orchestra led by a Russian conductor in a Russian theatre in a great Russian city, so they'd better come up with the best interpretation
We performed this in high school 44 years ago and it's never left my head. Every instrument is a feature, but the brass knocks the gate down on this one.
I've always been happy that Shostakovich was able to write a 10th symphony!! He's so good at symphonic works that he more than deserved to break the 9-limit barrier.
I have been reading Marcel Proust since my thirteenth- we often had to go to lunch at our family houses- and she had Proust, she has bought "à la recherche...'' because the colours and the dimensions were perfect for the room: what were the odds to choose ''Combray'' and twice or even thrice I have read:''Longtemps,...''. What a bonculo and what knowledge. He would know to appreciate the Meisters' opus.
Thank you for sharing this. I love Shostakovich and Gergiev. I am reading Shostakovich's letters (he wrote thousands of letters) and this helps me to understand the man, the historical period and his music.

There is no performance more intriguing and captivating and inspirational and magnificent than this orchestra‘s performance This splendor of words can not attach it
@@fabio-yl7md to the superficially civilized moral life seems provincial. none of the civilian blood shed in Urkraine is going to get in the way of you aesthetic plearure. Gergiev is boot-licking Nazi transposed to the prsent.
35:45 this is my favorite part. I cant think of another moment in music that can compare to this. Its so deeply emotional, human and yet so transcendental, so out of this world.
What beats me is how the amazing performers of a work like this can maintain their presence of mind in the face of such intensity and overwhelming emotion! I think I would collapse or go berserk!
Es una obra profundamente introspectiva POR parte del compositor. at the conclusion of the first mvt: high passage on the violin, rising 4th on the trumpet and chromatic scale on the celesta - it is tthe hand of a master
Fabulous performance! To me the test of the fifth is the great sob straight after the climax of the third movement, and Valery Gergiev passes with flying colours. Not every interpreter gets the immense sadness of that part. Thank you for uploading
No question about it. The fourth movement is simply shattering. For example, listen to the tympani playing the repeated f-a in the final bars of the piece. Makes one's hairs stand up on end. Solti's performance is my favourite.
In an interview I heard some years go, cellist Mstslav Rostropovitch (a close friend to Shostakovitch) told the host that Shostakovitch used to complain that people were playing the finale to fast, making it sound like a victory lap (my paraphrase.) He had intended it to be allegretto so the despair comes through. (I won't retell the history of this symphony here.) And, of course, Stalin just loved it that way. That said, I like the faster performances better; they are much more enjoyable listening. Case in point: This performance. WOW! I must be a musical barbarian.. 😁
Such a amazing and historic sinfony! We can clearly hear the military scenary, the Shostakovich reaction to the URSS sistem, the deep sadness (in the trird mov.) and the super finale of this masterpiece. Excellent orquestra and excellent condition. BRAVO!! 👏👏👏👏
The third movement of symphony no. 5. I can only listen to it at a time when I have the strength to go into that particular world, with Shostakovich. I have the impression that Valéry Gergiev knows what I mean.
The finale of the 5th is miraculous, although I don't think he was pleased with that particular moment when he received the flowers. I'm sure he felt, that was the moment for he and the orchestra to receive the applause it deserved... their time to shine. Each time I watch and listen to it, I am convinced he didn't appreciate it at all.

one of the greatest indeed! I can't stop listening... Mariinsky is magnificent!
Well it got the biggest standing ovation ever, on its's premiere. The audience stood up before it ended and the applause lasted until the theater lights went out.
Valery Gergiev: the only conductor who could hold a whole Shostakovich symphony together - with a toothpick.
😂😂 i mean seriously!
False. Many conductors successfully conduct with hands alone. Not even with a stupid toothpick.
@@organboi How rude! The conductor favours a short baton, which is completely acceptable
THERE IS AND OTHER FAMES rUSSIAN CONDUCTOR MRAVINSKY.
Yevgeny Mravinsky before him. The reference conductor of Chostakovich works, his friend. and complicit! a perfect osmosis.
This is truly one of if not the best performances of this symphony
1. 00:59 - Moderato
2. 16:20 - Allegretto
3. 21:30 - Largo
4. 36:37 - Allegro non troppo
