  • Unfinished and yet the most famous: Symphony in B minor “Unfinished” by Franz Schubert performed by the Budapest Festival Orchestra (BFO) conducted by Iván Fischer. The concert took place on February 28, 2014 at the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall in Budapest.
    (00:00) I. Allegro moderato
    (15:00) II. Andante con moto
    Franz Schubert (1797 - 1828) had already composed six complete symphonies by 1820, all of which were successors to the works of the great classical symphonists Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. It was followed by symphony drafts which Schubert then abandoned. Only from the third draft did he complete two movements in 1822, including orchestration. Of a third movement - the Scherzo - only a few bars exist. Although the two completed movements of this B minor symphony have gone down in history as “Unfinished,” they appear to be self-contained. No wonder, therefore, did Schubert send it as a symphony to the Steiermärkischer Musikverein in Graz in 1823, which had appointed him an honorary member. It is possible that Schubert himself was convinced of the completed character of the two symphonic movements. Beginning in 1825, he again worked on a four-movement symphony, later known as the “Great Symphony in C Major”. Judging by the order in which they were written, the “Unfinished” symphony would have to be considered Schubert’s 7th symphony, and the “Great” his 8th. However, in his complete published works, Schubert’s symphonies were numbered according to the order in which they were found and first performed, so that it has become customary to refer to the “Great Symphony in C major” (D 944) as the seventh and the “Unfinished” (D 759) as Symphony No. 8 in B minor. In more recent sources, the reverse numbering is occasionally found.
    The Symphony in B minor was not premiered until 1865, after Schubert had already been dead for 37 years. Even the premiere was a sensational success, and to this day the “Unfinished” is an absolute favorite with audiences. It is considered the first “Romantic” symphony ever because it contains much that is musically new. Its opening alone, with the mysterious and almost threatening ascending and descending melody in the low strings, builds up a tension that is maintained until the end of the two movements. Both movements are similar not only in tempo but also in structure. Somber, ominous passages are followed by sultry, homely ländler, which in turn break off abruptly, so that positive melodic lines always prove deceptive. Although the second movement seems more optimistic overall, the thematic blocks always take unexpected turns. But still, the symphony fragment ends in a kind of chorale in which the conflicting themes are reconciled.

      I'm not sure where I heard or read this, but sometime after his death , during an exceptionally harsh winter, a care taker of his personal belongings used some manuscripts which might have been the 3rd and 4th movements for firewood. Also why would he write a complete 9th symphony if the 8th wasn't completed? @@mcgdoc9546

    When I was young, in early 80's, I attempted to collect and compare all recordings of "Unfinished", which would have been far easier if we had had Apple Music, Spotify, etc. I was totally immersed in it for about six months. And I came down to Bruno Walter/NY Phil as my #1 pick, with a couple of almost equally good renditions. The worst was Riccardo Muti's; it was truly 'unfinished Unfinished'. The only rendition after then that really impressed me was Carlos Kleiber's. Even though I've got to admit that it was not the best among his phenomenal but scarce recordings, it was still one of the best renderings. Now this live performance is pretty satisfactory in its build-up and structuring, albeit it is little bit wanting in sonority. I'm happy that in this age when great civilizations are declining there are still those who inherit, share, and transmit them.

      I too like the Walter/NY Phil "old school" recording very much. This one feels a bit rushed (the style of the day is to play everything "briskly" --- wrong in general, and particularly so in the "Unfinished"). Try the live Abbado w/the Berlin (on TH-cam), and (believe it or not) Bernstein's w/the Concertgebouw on DGG. Gunter Wand's is excellent (with NDR orchestra) and so is Eschenbach's w/the Frankfurt Radio (live) also on TH-cam, who takes more liberties, but appropriately so. You'll have trouble picking a favorite. I know I did, although Abbado's is flawless.

    • @LucaJDLee
      @LucaJDLee 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @dejuren Indeed! When virtually all music in the world is just a click away, not only have we lost enjoyment of music in togetherness, but also a sense of spiritual exploration, which elevates our mundane experience of life unto something beyond.

    • @LucaJDLee
      @LucaJDLee 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Ageless-yh7gv Thank you very much for the recommendation. I'll definitely try Abbado's live recording. However, I doubt whether I can find a joy from it as much as I did when there was a 'scarcity' of the commodity. I still vividly remember a day when a lucky guy won a bidding to buy a used vinyl of John McCormack, which featured "Maggie", in Seoul about 30 years ago. Everybody in that store envied his fortune. At that time, importing music album was strictly regulated, and thus, it was extremely difficult to buy it. At a time when I was finally able to buy a couple of albums through a long, uncertain days of waiting (of course, with an exorbitant price tagged on it), it felt like a day of triumph. "Durch Leiden zur Freude," indeed! What a precious moment it was when, in almost a ritualistic act of worship, I carefully opened, cleaned, and put it on a turntable! That day is gone.

    Damn , that symphony is fantastic. Has a flaw so delicate. And the intese parts so dramatic, contrasting the motives through orchestra. Franz's most beautiful orchestral piece. Equal to that , only one piece I can say there is. Felix Mendelssohn's Hebrides overture : Fingal's cave .
