One of the greatest achievements in history for a fantastic symphony especially by a 19 year old. This is my favorite work by Shostakovich !!!!!

One of the best performances of this amazing work I’ve ever heard in my life, thank you so much for posting. I shall return again and again to listen and learn more each time! Marvelous orchestra, incredible percussion and pianist! Shostakovich was a pure genius from another world.
A Russian conductor direct a Russian orchestra to play a Russian piece, what can go wrong
@@patrickliu822 Gergiev, and this is from mite sources, doesn't like rehearsal. He has assistant conductors go through the piece with the orchestra, sometimes conducting the entire final rehearsal. Listen to P. Jarvi's recent recording with the HR Symphony orchestra, or listen to Bernstein's 1990 recording with the CSO or his earlier recordings with the NY philharmonic. Shostakovich himself instructed Bernstein, and told him exactly how to conduct the 1st.
Agreed you can't go wrong with most Russian conductors.
Kondrashin has some of the best recordings of all of Shostakovich's symphonies, but sadly, many of them are not currently available. Mravinsky is the old gold standard, for all but the 13th, due to what most perceive as his antisemitic leanings. It is indeed what ended his professional and personal relationship with DSCH.
This pianist leaves a bit to be desired. There are a plethora of recordings of far better pianists. She is way, WAY, to heavy with the sustain pedal, and the fact that she has to stop playing with her left hand to turn the page is appalling. Most recordings that have accompanying video will show you that most pianists know this by memory, i know I do.
