Es una obra profundamente introspectiva POR parte del compositor. El tercer tema Largo VA sumiendo AL oyente al menos a mí en una lenta angustia y pesadumbre que es lo que trasmite el autor su sentir por la represión estalinista de la que era víctima y en general el pueblo ruso. Magistralmente dirigida por Gergiev a quien en el tema Largo se ve su cara conmovida.

Great performance. Rather fast for my liking. The first recording I ever heard was Bernstein and Chicago symphony, amazing...then I listened to Mravinsky, again a revelation this man. How fortunate we are to be able to hear such giants of music so readily.

Pure genius watching Bernstein conducting. He's been dead a few decades now but being able to watch and listen as he effortlessly conducts Beethoven's 6th symphony is just glorious😊

Симфонии Шостаковича с четвертой по двенадцатую мне кажутся весьма впечатляющими. Я зависим! Раньше я увлекался Чайковским, затем Грейгом, Рахманиновым, Брамсом, Бетховеном, Сен-Саном (3-я симфония), Дворжаком, Хачатуряном и Римским, Корсаковым (Шехерезада), Листом, Шопеном и другими. Но когда я больше анализирую Шостаковича и слушаю его симфонический фортепианный концерт №2 в исполнении Юджи Ванга, я в конечном итоге осознаю абсолютный блеск Шостаковича. Если я стану путешественником во времени, мне бы хотелось вернуться в прошлое, встретиться с ним и пожать ему руку. На самом деле я могу сделать это благодаря своей умственной трансцендентности, поскольку я писатель-фантаст. :) Еще одна вещь, которую я хотел бы отметить; Шостакович написал некоторые из своих симфоний в жестоких условиях военного времени. I'm addicted! I used to be addicted to Tchaikovsky, then Greig, Rachmaninoff, Brahms, Beethoven, Saint Saen's (symphony 3), Dvorak, Khachaturian, and Rimsky Korsakov (Scheherazade), Liszt, Chopin and others. But as I analyze Shostakovich more and hear his symphonies piano concerto #2 played by Yuja Wang, I ultimately come to grips with Shostakovich utter brilliance. If I become a time traveler, I would like to go back in time and meet him and shake his hand. I can actually do that through my mental transcendence since I'm a science fiction Novelist. :) Another thing I would like to note; Shostakovich penned some of his symphonies under brutal conditions in wartime. The fact Shostakovich persevered under wartime conditions and created master pieces demonstrates his incredible talents and stamina.

Listening to this symphony for the 1st time...I'm surprised in the 1st movement of this early symphony how empty some of the music feels even then, a lot of frantic running about with no place to go. There are a few in the chat who seem critical and usually there are many more crying "masterpiece" for every symphony. I think the problem with his symphonic cycle is that so many of these works are memorials to wars and historic events, often commissioned and the inspiration for them is rather uneven. Many of them were just way longer than they needed to be. Particularly 11 through 15 suffer from this.

How he has written that unison Clarinet and Bassoon in the 4th Movement always hits me in the Soul and the to the End ughhhhhh Bravo Bravo Bravo

The content of the last two movements is weak. Largo: the passacaglia doesn't really grow or expand much, at most 3 textures at any time, and the final several minutes is just one solo instrument after another against the bass ground. Very gray orchestration...It really doesn't go anywhere. Allegretto: most of the first 4 minutes is again a solo instrument or texture against a bum bum rhythmic texture. Thin and unimaginative. the middle of the movement picks up...but the big climax is much bombast repeating the end of the climax of the 1st movement..without any transformation or new revelation..

Why those drunken camera angles?

This is a marvelous Performance. Outstanding if I may say so. In this symphony you can certainly feel the sadness and also the terror of the jews that were massacred in Babi Yar. You can certainly tell Shostakovich had feeling for the jewish people, especially those that were persecuted and exterminated by the Nazis. All I can say is, this symphony is very emotional. A great tribute to the Jews that lost their lives in W.W.Two. Thank you so much for uploading this wonderful performance.
