THE MARIINSKY ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS
8° de Enero del 2013 - January 8th, 2013
Throughout his career, Shostakovich used Jewish themes in his music, but his boldest statement of solidarity with Jewish causes was the Symphony No. 13, “Babi Yar.” Some historic context: In 1941, Nazis and their sympathizers murdered nearly 34,000 Jews in two days at Babi Yar, a ravine near Kiev. For years, Soviet authorities suppressed any acknowledgement of the atrocity, did not erect a monument, and even went so far as to arrest Jews who prayed at the site.
Dissident poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko’s 1961 poem “Babi Yar” reflects on the massacre and is a searing condemnation of anti-Semitism and the Soviet system that condoned it. Shostakovich was mesmerized by the poem and planned to set it as a cantata, but eventually added other Yevtushenko poems to create a five-movement symphony for bass-baritone, male chorus, and large orchestra with an expanded percussion section.
BABI YAR
By Yevgeni Yevtushenko
Translated by Benjamin Okopnik, 10/96
No monument stands over Babi Yar.
A steep cliff only, like the rudest headstone.
I am afraid.
Today, I am as old
As the entire Jewish race itself.
I see myself an ancient Israelite.
I wander o’er the roads of ancient Egypt
And here, upon the cross, I perish, tortured
And even now, I bear the marks of nails.
It seems to me that Dreyfus is myself. 1
The Philistines betrayed me - and now judge.
I’m in a cage. Surrounded and trapped,
I’m persecuted, spat on, slandered, and
The dainty dollies in their Brussels frills
Squeal, as they stab umbrellas at my face.
I see myself a boy in Belostok 2
Blood spills, and runs upon the floors,
The chiefs of bar and pub rage unimpeded
And reek of vodka and of onion, half and half.
I’m thrown back by a boot, I have no strength left,
In vain I beg the rabble of pogrom,
To jeers of “Kill the Jews, and save our Russia!”
My mother’s being beaten by a clerk.
O, Russia of my heart, I know that you
Are international, by inner nature.
But often those whose hands are steeped in filth
Abused your purest name, in name of hatred.
I know the kindness of my native land.
How vile, that without the slightest quiver
The antisemites have proclaimed themselves
The “Union of the Russian People!”
It seems to me that I am Anna Frank,
Transparent, as the thinnest branch in April,
And I’m in love, and have no need of phrases,
But only that we gaze into each other’s eyes.
How little one can see, or even sense!
Leaves are forbidden, so is sky,
But much is still allowed - very gently
In darkened rooms each other to embrace.
-“They come!”
-“No, fear not - those are sounds
Of spring itself. She’s coming soon.
Quickly, your lips!”
-“They break the door!”
-“No, river ice is breaking…”
Wild grasses rustle over Babi Yar,
The trees look sternly, as if passing judgement.
Here, silently, all screams, and, hat in hand,
I feel my hair changing shade to gray.
And I myself, like one long soundless scream
Above the thousands of thousands interred,
I’m every old man executed here,
As I am every child murdered here.
No fiber of my body will forget this.
May “Internationale” thunder and ring 3
When, for all time, is buried and forgotten
The last of antisemites on this earth.
There is no Jewish blood that’s blood of mine,
But, hated with a passion that’s corrosive
Am I by antisemites like a Jew.
And that is why I call myself a Russian!
This is a marvelous Performance. Outstanding if I may say so. In this symphony you can certainly feel the sadness and also the terror of the jews that were massacred in Babi Yar. You can certainly tell Shostakovich had feeling for the jewish people, especially those that were persecuted and exterminated by the Nazis. All I can say is, this symphony is very emotional. A great tribute to the Jews that lost their lives in W.W.Two. Thank you so much for uploading this wonderful performance.
Shostakovich was, first and foremost, a humanitarian. It is reflected vividly here.
And composer, a distant second.
It's a pity that Gergiev isn't.
Both composer and poet were very brave for these statements. Good for them. And what a staggering work as a result. I suppose the conviction of truth lends to it significantly, but also the immense talent of both men.
Thank you! An exciting and at the same time frightening masterpiece.

Quel beau concert! Merci beaucoup.
Leaving politics aside, Gergiev's version is terrific.
¿You mean, leaving aside the terrible crime of killing thousands of women, men and CHILDREN in Babi Yar?
I personally think the chorus needs to be much louder at places

To the people of Ukraine 2022.
Didn't anybody tell the conductor that he'd actually not picked up his baton, but his toothpick?
Legend has it, that for having lost a bet, he should lead with a toothpick.
He switched to a toothpick after too many loose batons went flying (a la baseball) from his hands, imperiling both musicians and audience. He's very animated and flails a lot.
Powerful. Sorrowful. Do not forget because the worst of history has a nasty habit of repeating itself. Prayers Offered.
Can anyone let me know the beginning part is from which movement? (0:00-0:46)
Shostakovich 10th Symphony 2nd Movement. The best version is by Gustavo Dudamel imo
@@rolandoperla115 Thank you!
There's another version on TH-cam with the same performers (slightly younger) during the Proms in 2006. That one is more impressive IMO, but unfortunately it is split up in 7 parts. Still highly recommended.
Very timely piece as it was originally dedicated to atrocities committed in Ukraine, presumably by the Nazis or their sympathizers. Rather than sorrowful or chilling, I find so much of this heroic in the best sense of the word, defiant in the face of the worst of humanity.

Why is he conducting with a tooth pick??
why are there no TH-cam adverts interrupting this marvellous performance? No adverts for Grammarly? Have the nitwits in TH-cam marketing not caught up on this? Or does TH-cam have a secret policy of allowing Russian videos to pass through?

Someone need to compose another piece for the genocide in Bucha
That was a set up a la "Wag the dog". Also the name Bucha perfectly fits for the western audience, as it sound like butcher.
Love Gergiev)
At the end Gergiev gives a little prayer for the more than 30.000 jews killed at Babi Yar by the Nazis and their collaborators in september 1941.
Well, isn't that ironic? His buddy Putin is responsible for massacring tens of thousands more innocent people, eighty year later.

So it seems Valero G knew what his patron was all about. It must have been very rewarding. Shostakovich had Stalin to contend with and the world has another Fascist dictator in its nightmares. Of course the music is special and remarkable that it emanates from terrors in the East.

For years, the conductor Valery Gergiev, Russia’s most powerful classical musician, avidly embraced Vladimir Putin and suffered nothing for it. Notwithstanding a notorious campaign ad in which Gergiev praised Putin’s capacity to instill fear; notwithstanding the conductor’s crude propaganda concerts in the former war zones of South Ossetia and Syria; notwithstanding his endorsement of the annexation of Crimea, his photo opportunities with generals and admirals, his disdainful replies to questions about anti-gay laws in Russia-his international career barrelled ahead.
He's not against gay people. How can you be against sick people? Can you be against people with Dawn syndrome? I don't think so, so does he

@@markshulman3150 yes they did lol... but that wasn't my point.
To describe Shostakovitch Symphony and Yevtushenko´s poem as "a bit like a drowned corpse!" is beyond insulting. As a music lecturer you should know better.
@@losdosabuelos I did not compare them to a drowned corpse... you did!
