I'm really impressed with how much you have gotten out of that motor. Especially considering the stock motor is overall really good. I feel like when the typical "Car meet Carl's" talk about S2000's, the first thing mentioned is that Forced Induction is the only option for more power. Ive always thought it was a dumb thing to say but it's just something I've heard way too many times
It's not as easy to make power on the F series but it's certainly possible
@@TheSlipAngle do you think cam phasing and the added displacement of a K24 are the main factors to why they're able to make such good power as compared to an F series?

This s2000 was great.. now its incredible! I love it! I would love to do something similar to mine. Your a badass driver and glad you tell people the risks and always leave margin for error on the streets.

The race was cool. I am glad that the channel is not all about that straight line stuff. I miss the rx7 fd. I would love to see you guys do a little bigger track with as many cars and comparison as possible. I know it cost money, so what ever you guys can do would be great.
The new Lime Rock small track got decently bigger. We start releasing new episodes of The Slip Angle next week

Merry Christmas guys!! Actually just discovered this S2K rebuild series today (a year later Chirstmas day 2022), which definitely made me subscribe after seeing you go into such great detail, reasoning, while sharing honest results with input thoughout the mini series.
I actually relate very much to Quinn with his Miata build. In fact, its the very reason I have built my MR2 the way I have, cause I too couldn't afford to mod an S2K the very same way.
If I ever make my way to the CT area, I'm going to make it a point of meeting you both up. Till then, be blessed guys!! Keep up the awesome work!

Hey big fan of your videos, just curious as to why I never hear you mention anything about Lotus? Seems like a logical fit to your garage.
I have a love hate thing with Lotus. I always liked the Exige but they don't drive well and don't like much slip angle.
I should add that I have seriously considered an Evora as an NSX alternative too

Do you think ITBs and e85 can give it the edge to hold top end alittle better against the Genesis?
ITBS should do another 5-7 hp, e85 is not convenient so I'd never run it personally

This may be a stupid question. But as I've never had anything milled before:
If I take my cylinder head to my machine shop will they know how to do the calculation to do the right amount of compression? (I'm shooting for 11.8 and copying spoon specs via best motoring videos) or will they need the short block also?
Look if they have a compression calculator on line for your f series engine like they do for almost all Honda engine. I would shave .5mm or .0200th of the head and run a thinner head gasket with some arp head studs.
They won't know the calculations most likely. My setup should be right around that compression, maybe even a hair more

@@implectic 2.2 is .1 higher comp stock. The calculations are the same though

This is a great video. I got a 2001 a few months ago and I'm debating on modding it cause it's at 180k miles but idk if it'll handle it with the engine getting old. The exhaust I'll definitely get cause I've seen many reviews of the Ballade exhaust and I now want that. Any tips on a older engine like mine? Anything to avoid on these with higher mileage?
The engine still good as long you keep maintenance on point... do a valve adjustment though
If the motor is healthy it should be fine. Just keep up with the maintenance and look at the timing correction drive gear Ballade has
For 01 with that mileage you'll likely burn a little oil. Always check it every time you get gas (says that in the owners manual anyways), keep the valve lash in spec and have fun. If you're so inclined you can get a blackstone oil analysis done to get an idea on the health of your engine as well
keep in mind, f series are going for 7k+ now

It's so funny cause the genesis looks like he's just chilling and going out for a normal cruise but the s2000 looks like it's going fast hahahaha. I have the same thing happen to me when I'm cruising in the s2k but then a mini van passes me. But between me and the soccer dad I'm the one still smiling.

If y’all went through 5th gear the Genesis walks away, the 5th gear is nasty in the 3.8s and the top end is wild for the v6, s2k really quick with its mods and likely is stupid fun because it’s got even more speed now
After 100 mph its all horsepower and ability to push air.

Weird thought… but the Genesis interior sorta looks like a muscle car interior… in the best way possible.
So my question is.. how much does this all cost to gain that extra hp? Including a stand alone ecu, tune, etc.. I'm sure you got a hook up price, but for a random joe.. ?? Does it take alot more work and time to go this route instead of going force induction?
$2000 - ECU Haltech Platinum PRO Plug-in ECU + Harness (not sure if needed)
$500 - Valve springs, titanium retainers, stem seals, bronze valve guides
$200 - Head milling?
$160 - Spoon 2 layer head gasket
$650 - Camshafts (currently on sale)
$350 - Adjustable drive gear
$900 - Exhaust manifold
$800 - Ballade TYPE S EXHAUST
-------------------------------------------------------
$5560 - Total
Additional cost is light flyewheel, fluid crank pulley, aluminium auxiliary pulleys, intake, ...
So it's around $140 per one WHP. And that's not bad on NA engine. And if you are able to get used ECU ...
I did most of the mods in 2013 and I have no idea what I paid. It was normal pricing though. Those numbers seem about right.
I kow they are not drag cars but id sure like to know a 0-60 and 1/4 of both of these cars.
The Genny runs a mid to high 13. I think the S2K would definitely be a mid to low 13 with a hero launch and money shifts.
How would you compare your s2000 with your old 1.6 turbo na miata
Two completely different cars. The Miata was definitely faster overall but nearly as exciting as the S2000

Comment for the algorithm, and as others said, good to have the PSA. Put my weekend car backwards into a fence post a couple months back, thought I knew it well enough put can't predict everything!

Do you plan on putting in a shorter final gear in your S2000?
I'm hesitant because I don't want to sacrifice highway cruise. The car is pretty good now with all the low end it gained.

They genesis needs a good tune and a short shifter.
It’s got a coolerworx shifter but could definitely use a tune
take them to the drag strip, that would be safest and most fair comparison
Adding launch into the equation is going over complicate it. Simple acceleration tests like this show enough data
Probably should invest in a f22c bottom end
Maybe eventually when the F20 bottom gets tired. I'd do a high compression 2.2 if I was actually going to do a block for this car.
What stood out to me the most was ow much louder the S2000 is inside.
Keep in mind we had a mic in the engine bay for the windy road stuff

I dunno why KDM’s don’t get enough respect like the JDM’s do I think there underrated and solid value cars for 1st time enthusiast. Even though the Genesis Coupe has flaws its KDM version of the S-Chassis.

In real world driving the s2k is definitely the faster car now with the low end power.
After i sold my berlina black ap1 i instantly regret it, so ibought suzuka blue 2002 ap1. I think real men drive ap1 and dailys it.
