I could listen to Sam Smith do these Buyers Guide episodes all day. I remember (as I’m sure many here do) when this car first debuted in 99 as a 2000 year model , and was always impressed with the F20C and later F22C1 engine that Honda produced for the car. Producing the highest specific power output for any naturally aspirated piston engine in a car priced under US$100,000, this engine is still one of the highest output per liter and the highest revving mass production engines ever made.
I've driven a 2002 S2K for the past 11 years. No other car provides such pure driving stoke. I'm seriously having it buried with me just in case they don't stock them in heaven.
I'll admit to daydreaming of other cars, but when it comes down to it, I don't think I'll love them the way I do my s2000. It's just such a special machine.
I bought my S2000 new in 2002, Sebring Silver, and it is currently still sitting in my garage. It’s a California car, never driven in the rain, always garaged. It just turned over 8,000 miles. I know I’m crazy for not driving it more but I had too many toys and not enough time to drive it. The good thing is the car looks as good as the day I bought it, not a rock chip, door ding, nothing. As close to a new one as you can get. At this point I’m afraid to drive it as I don’t want it getting damaged. I just keep the oil changed and go for a drive once a month or so to keep it in good running condition. As much as I love the car as I get older it gets harder and harder to get in and out of it, lol. I will probably eventually sell it although I’m not looking forward to that whole process of figuring out what it’s worth, letting people test drive my car, etc.
I had a 2001 S2000 and loved it. But I’ve never had a car that would change lanes all by it’s self going through run of from sprinklers. No matter what tires I had on the car it would hydroplane in the wet starting at any speed over 45mph. It also was murder on tires. Now good luck finding one that’s not beat to death.

@@fastdude2002 I can’t blame you for keeping it,they are beautiful sports cars. Kind of like a Japanese Cobra. Long hood line, the cockpit way back. Great lines. With that low mileage when you do get around to selling it I’d expect you’ll get a premium price for it. Most of them still on the road will have had the crap beaten out of them. It really won't. Miata sells ~9000 a year. Civic Type R ~5000-6000 a year. Supra, 6000 a year. BRZ-86 ~5500 last year (combined). Sports cars don't really sell well compared to the eco-box cousins on the lot

Mostly accurate review/ guide but coming from a guy who has owned around a dozen S2K’s new and old. Go with the AP2 with the slightly lower redline. AP2’s are classified as 2004+ Model Years. (2004-2009)
Works for me, but the AP2 cars might not a realistic choice for everyone as they cost more than the AP1 cars and the difference in prices between the two has continued to increase over the past couple of years. For buyers that find themselves torn, I'd say that it's far better to get into an AP1 car than no S2000 at all. If it ends up not working out, just sell the car later on for a profit.
I sold my 07 because the top was coming apart and the insurance was too much lol. What I traded it in for back in 2011 was almost what I bought it for used. Since then the price of it went up. I wish I would have kept it.
I’ve had 3 and I can’t imagine ever selling this one. I’ve never heard anyone who doesn’t like them except a few motoring journalists criticising the lack of bottom end grunt. Un breakable machines which get a really surprising amount of attention.
Personally, I want my outboard tires planted firmly. The car must get the inboard tires in the game. I've only been driving Honda hatchbacks since they were available. I like it. Rails, man.
Crazy how the car this guy is reviewing looks and sounds exactly like mines. Guess I no longer need to do a TH-cam video....buy one now before prices go up due to hyperinflation
I know this will get some owners in a twist but there is only ONE TRUE s2000 and that is the F20c 9k redline. The s2000 monicker derives itself from the 2.O liter engine (not that it was released in year 2000), so s2200 would be what the 2.2 liter should be named. The F20c was named the Best Naturally Aspirated Engine of All Time in Car and Driver because it is an engineering marvel. The 2.2l is a diluted s2000.
I own both the AP1 and AP2 and I love them both. The 9k rpm on the AP1 is awesome but the 8k on the AP2 is just as exciting. The steering on the AP1 is much tighter and in my opinion better but the 9 ft pound torque on the AP2 really makes a difference at low rpm. I would not say the AP2 is a "diluted" version. It's a "refined" version, which doesn't make it better or worst. If you want a more daily driver, everyday kind of car, the AP2. If you want a track (focus) car, the AP1. That being said, the AP2 is just as capable of a track car as the AP1 and the AP1 is capable of a daily driver as the AP2.
I used to have one in the exact same colour as this back in the 2000s. Probably the best car I ever owned. Gearshift is unmatched, handling was like a go cart. But, at just over 6 foot tall, the car is too small for me. The steering wheel is in your knees and the top of the windscreen is too low. Surprised the reviewer didn't mention any of that. The car is built for small Japanese people.
I'm nearly 6'1" and dont understand the cramped complaints. Even on longer drives I find it to be fine. It's not my daily though, and it never would be used for such things.
@@mrnicktoyou Ok, it's no Honda Element as far as its interior goes, thats for sure! But for someone going for a pure joyride, driving it like it should be driven, there is plenty of space to be buckled in for that! Granted, I'm also 180 lbs, so I'm fairly slender, and I'm sure that goes a long way to feeling at home in the car. You have to position the seat just right and I think it's fine. Even my knees don't hit anything.
Not a bad review, but it glosses over the handling of the ap1 vs ap2. AP1 has more tendency to steer with the throttle near the limit, which was intentionally designed in. It requires skill and a delicate touch, but I love that responsiveness in my 2002.
I'm on my 3rd NA Miata and I'm heavily considering to sell and get myself an s2k butttt na Miatas have been sky rocketing too and I can't have both so I'm in a predicament. I love everything about the s2k though and I'd love to just rip it trough canyons, city
I owned a white 2003 NB2 Miata before my S2K. The Miata was a great car for what it is but the S2K is really an upgrade. Everything great about the Miata the S2K can do and do it better. No bias, just my experience and personal opinion.
Dag nab it.. now this video is gonna make them even more elusive and more expensive to buy! Tks.. I was a secret. j/k great review.. now .. find me one.
I’ve owned mine since new 04 , very reliable, 103,000 km and I’ve only replaced the front brake pads at 80,000 km , I’m wondering how much higher in value will they go?
I have mint condition 2002 S2000. I’m the original owner, with 8400 miles on it, yes 8400. Everything original stock. Just waiting for a collector to find out about it someday. It has been a prized possession for 20 years now, and a real treat every time I’ve driven her. If you can find one, definitely buy it. You won’t regret it. Have fun!
just a question on AP1 vs AP2 handling.. I happen to have an AP1, but I'm driving with AP2 size wheels (215, 245). I haven't found the car loose at all, indeed it grips like crazy until it doesnt. I wouldn't mind LESS grip to be honest so it would be a bit more predictable. I wonder do you think the wheels itself is enough to make this difference in driving feel?
I love the idea of these buyer's guides, but these are so poorly done. Either just call it a review or cut out the editorial content You guys bothered to put the car on a lift and what did you do? Just talk about what AP1 and AP2 means. What a waste
I missed my chance of owning a great condition AP1 in yellow for $14.9K in 2015. Infuriated, bitter, angry, and every negative emotion under the sun is how I feel about the “sudden” interest in these cars. Had people appreciated them when they were being made, Honda would’ve done more with them. But no, someone makes a TH-cam vid these days and prices skyrocket on random cars all the time. Not only are costs up but because of social media clout, now it’s even harder to find one unmolested and not riced our.
we had an S2000 in the body shop a few days ago with some front end damage. I hope I get the job. I want to test drive it when it's done. I had to move it the other day and it was hard to get in and out of. but when I got in it fit like a glove. we don't get many cool cars in. the last one was a red first gen BMW M3. awesome

You haven't driven them all so......
@@DrewLSsix well I can drive them
My dad has one, already told him it's mine when he wants to let go of it. Got the Honda bug from my Integra so need that sweet VTEC again in my life 😂
I was able to get my 2011 TSX Sport Wagon because of an S2000. The former owner of my wagon had both cars, and his wife told him to get something larger to haul their kid around. He did the right thing and kept the S2000, which meant I got a great wagon. I've always loved how these looked and sounded!
Sam Smith, formerly of R&T may not own an S2000, but he does own an ITR. Definitely not "stupid", one of the best auto journalists out there. Thanks Sam!
Itr can't compare.
I was debating buying an itr back in 2007 as a replacement for my em1, but I'm glad I chose to juml into the s2000; you can't beat rwd Honda, but an itr would be a close second.
@@endless_touge actually it can the ITR was a homologated special...... Double wishbone, seam welded body, port and polished head, etc, etc........ There very close.... Sam has also stated the s2k was a Japanese e30 m3 evo3 but with no torque and no roof..... Sam is up there with Chris Harris.........ITR is slower but it's slightly more visceral......
Had my AP1 for over 4 years now :) aftermarket rear toe arms are a day and night difference in being able to dial out that rear end twitchiness
Can I ask what brand and model is it pls? Think this is what Sam is referring to at 5:38.
@@mk.h I went cheapo on mine, I think they were Megan Racing. There's tons of brands out there though, Hardrace, T1R, K-tuned, etc.
@@theguy1994 Thanks yes just read through the thread about Megan Racing one on s2ki. 👍 much appreciated
It is still Great after 18yrs!
My dream car 😍 I love you s2000 ❤
I've driven a 2002 S2K for the past 11 years. No other car provides such pure driving stoke. I'm seriously having it buried with me just in case they don't stock them in heaven.
💯💯💯
Love it! Last week came home with a 2000 with 30K and Super Clean! I promise not to PARK it and Just Look at it Dammit! Awesome Car!
Also rare to find one that hasn't been messed with my tuner boyz.
Nice review. One thing though, its not that no one cared for it, but all of us that cared could not afford it when it was new. :)
Thanks for the review! Have an 02 Suzuka blue, love it! Will never sell! :)
Beautiful color. There’s a mint one for sale near me with 27K on it and they’re asking 43K for it!!!

Kids don’t have any respect for nice cars.they like to take them to drifting events and pound on them. I’d keep it as long as you can still get into it,you probably feel about yours the way I felt about my BMW E 30 M-3. I kick myself for selling it,wonderful sports car.
Had a '03 and had my eye on getting a '06+ but no longer worth it after price rocketed on these. Picked up a '09 Cayman instead.
Sold my 07 in 2019, regretted it and bought an 06 with 23k miles for 30k!! But it's beyond clean and I'm just glad to be back in one.
Last week alone, the s2k price went up by 1.5k each (at least in each dealership) around the area and the ads. I wonder if they are all in cahoots.
Proud owner of S2K here.
Honda needs to bring this back, it’ll sell like crazy
It rumoured yes
It really won't. Miata sells ~9000 a year. Civic Type R ~5000-6000 a year. Supra, 6000 a year. BRZ-86 ~5500 last year (combined). Sports cars don't really sell well compared to the eco-box cousins on the lot
If it came back as a CUV it would sell well but nobody is interested in 2-seater sports cars.
The best sport roadster ever made 🙌
I bought 00 s2k last year w/32k miles. Probably should keep it for a bit. Interesting to see how high these go in value years from now.
I had a black over red 2000 ap1.. I didn’t even realize at the time it was one of 5000 (and being a Honda, even a GREAT Honda, I’d say only 60% are left (that stuff rear suspension, he didn’t mention that every single year of production, it was made softer, people kept trading ends in corners (I did a few times).. trick was “don’t lift!” It was like a 911 in the regard. Other than that, it was probably the most fun car I’ve ever had and I had a lot of the 90s and 2000s greats.. ap1, ford lightning svt, mustang cobra, bmw e36 coupe, integra type r.. I should have kept EVERYTHING (and I’m leaving out a lot!)
Hagerty making the highest quality content these days 🙌🏼
Nicely done Sir. Like the back stories too. Thank You
Original Owner here... sitting in my garage under a cover is an '01 Silverstone, with red seats....30K miles... never touched rain.... its in better than showroom condition
Would you consider selling the vehicle? Regards!
Why do you say that? What exactly contributes to that choice?
Found one with a rebuilt title. 130,000 miles for 10k. Checking it out today
I sold my 07 because the top was coming apart and the insurance was too much lol. What I traded it in for back in 2011 was almost what I bought it for used. Since then the price of it went up. I wish I would have kept it.
Future classic.
Future? How about present day classic
I’ve had 3 and I can’t imagine ever selling this one. I’ve never heard anyone who doesn’t like them except a few motoring journalists criticising the lack of bottom end grunt. Un breakable machines which get a really surprising amount of attention.
Those motoring journalists are probably punks who've never owned a sports car
Personally, I want my outboard tires planted firmly. The car must get the inboard tires in the game. I've only been driving Honda hatchbacks since they were available. I like it. Rails, man.
I bought my S2000 five years ago with 33k miles. Now has 108k. And would def not sell it for $20k.
Crazy how the car this guy is reviewing looks and sounds exactly like mines. Guess I no longer need to do a TH-cam video....buy one now before prices go up due to hyperinflation
Snap oversteer can be reduced by wider tires, better tires and experimenting with the tire pressures.
“ The AP2 is the better car, the Ap1 is the better S2000 “.
Here in the UK it is Ap1 only but with the ap2 upgrades except the engine after 2004.. I have a 2008 15`000 mile example and love it..
This car is so amazing. It's great to drive. Looks amazing. Turns heads. Prices are still going up
I used to have one in the exact same colour as this back in the 2000s.
@@SnickterP every car review of the S2000 always mentions that it's cramped inside. How can you say it's not an issue?
@@mrnicktoyou Ok, it's no Honda Element as far as its interior goes, thats for sure! But for someone going for a pure joyride, driving it like it should be driven, there is plenty of space to be buckled in for that! Granted, I'm also 180 lbs, so I'm fairly slender, and I'm sure that goes a long way to feeling at home in the car. You have to position the seat just right and I think it's fine. Even my knees don't hit anything.
I remember the "experts" on reddit saying these cars will never be collectible...geniuses.
I love my S2000!
The Honda S2000 ROCKS man
Not a bad review, but it glosses over the handling of the ap1 vs ap2.
I can say that my s2000 never ever let me down
Hagerty rules!
I hope one day I can own one. Preferably an AP1
can you guys do a 240z buyers guide please and thank you...
Still a timeless beauty. Honda's S2000 aged really well. 👍
The S2000 is the car equivalent of a Honda CBR. Fast and fun but you have to rev the snot out of it to fully enjoy it.
And how much fun it is to rev the snot out of! Love my ‘05!
Buyers guide - buy one
I want one so bad, im glad im from the uk
This makes it more hard to get rid of my ABP AP1 S2K :/ .. Good review though! :D
An S2000 cost around USD 50,000 in Malaysia and over USD 100,000 in Singapore.
You nailed it🤙💯
I saw these in the early 2000's, but I went with the SRT4. I wanted something a little quicker.
Looking to buy my first next week! AP1
They will go down fast. Along all regular cars. Thanks to people believing in that Greta puppet

Have fun!
Woul you consider selling her? Regards!
@@jasonscotta7129 I’m considering selling her. I would ask a price that perhaps fits a collectors price. If that’s you I’d be happy to talk further.
@@paulhester2588 Completely understandable. What’s the color combination?
@@jasonscotta7129 Hi Jason. It’s Berlina Black on black.
@@paulhester2588 Okay, what’s your ballpark number you have in mind?
just a question on AP1 vs AP2 handling..
Do you have a video about the '00-'03 BMW Z3 3.0 Roadster?
I loved the video, but I think the title should be flashback reviews or something like that.
I’ve been waiting for this lol
I love the idea of these buyer's guides, but these are so poorly done.
Either just call it a review or cut out the editorial content
You guys bothered to put the car on a lift and what did you do? Just talk about what AP1 and AP2 means. What a waste

Sam: looking forward to something with torque after that 2CV. Hagerty: well....

I had to move it the other day and it was hard to get in and out of. but when I got in it fit like a glove. we don't get many cool cars in. the last one was a red first gen BMW M3. awesome
